Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus hosting 25th Annual Snowmobile Derby Submitted by Ray Boutin ‘Tis that time of year again to fire up your sleds and bundle up the family for this great day out with family and friends. The Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus are holding their 25th derby, but when we went back into the archives we see that the first derby may have been held in 1993 so that would make it our 26th. Upon further review we see that the derby has been held at different venues over the years including: Arcola Land & Cattle (the High House), Spearing Service Shop or Moose Mountain Leisure, Jerry & Paul Weber’s farm and for the last couple years and this year at Michael and Richard Weber’s – Freemantle Farms. We have always seemed to have enough snow for the derby to go and at various times miraculously we would get a dump of snow just before the derby date and a week later it was gone. This year promises to have ample snow and great sledding conditions. The Derby is happening March 10th at the Weber farm 6 miles west of Carlyle. Rider hands are $20, Silent hands are 1 for $10 or 3 for $20. 50% of the ticket sales go towards the prize money; the High number wins 25% of the pot, the Low number wins 15% and the Mystery number wins 10%.

This derby is geared to family fun and we welcome all sledders to come out and participate. Non sledders can also come out to visit and purchase a silent hand and enter to win prizes from our draw table. Our Knights will be grilling up hot burgers and dogs and refreshments and snacks will be avail-

Moe may have won carbon tax case before it started

By Murray Mandryk It is a case that most expected Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party would lose.

But if wins are measured in political gain, Moe may have already won by challenging carbon pricing in the Court of Appeal.

After hearing from the provincial and federal governments and some 15 interveners, the fivemember Saskatchewan court is now deliberating on whether the federal Liberal government had constitutional authority to implement its $10 a tonne carbon fee that rises to $50 a tonne by 2022.

One of the things the court is determining is whether the federal government’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Pollution Act is a regulator pricing on pollution or whether is, indeed, a tax as contended by the Saskatchewan government and its lawyers.

“If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it’s a duck,” Mitch McAdam told the Court of Appeal.

This is important because the crux of the provincial argument is the federal regulatory industrial levy on polluters is not being applied evenly. Essentially, it was argued that the federal government made arbitrary decisions on which provinces’ industries are meeting standards and which aren’t. This is unfair to a jurisdiction like Saskatchewan that, by virtue of its oil, mining and farming sector and by the fact that we burn coal for electrical production, is hit disproportionally hard.

Moreover, it usually falls under the provincial authority to regular specific local businesses. Also, the province and federal government hold joint jurisdiction over the environment.

However, the thinking among most legal academics has been that regulating industrial pollution is a matter that is well within the constitutional jurisdiction of the federal government.

And even if it is deemed a tax as Saskatchewan has suggested federal government lawyer Sharlene Telles-Langdon argued it was still within the federal government’s authority to use taxation power or whatever tool it deemed necessary to address a matter of “national concern” under the Constitution’s “peace, order and good government” provision.

During her submission to the court, TellesLangdon argued that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are “indivisible” particles that do not recognized international or provincial borders.

As such, only the federal government can deal with the “cumulative dimension” of climate change and the federal government is well within its authority to require provinces to meet “minimal national standards” to deal with this “threat to humanity.”

In a nutshell, that was the court argument we heard earlier this month.

Now, it’s up to the court to decide, although it’s highly likely that whichever side loses will likely appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. So even if the province wins its case, we will still face a carbon tax.

But maybe seeing this fight carry on for couple more years is also a win for Moe and the Sask. Party, too.

After all, there is a win in simply fighting an unpopular tax imposed by another level of government.

There were plenty of overtones of politics in the provincial case, including calls for no taxation without representation. (Yes, there was a reference to the Boston tea party among the legal arguments.)

Of course, the province might very well lose its legal arguments that the federal government exceeded its jurisdiction by applying carbon pricing on local companies regulated by provinces and by unfairly applying its carbon prices to provinces like Saskatchewan simply because it didn’t like this province’s GHG-reduction efforts.

But its lawyers did outline a strong brief with strong legal arguments.

And what may be even stronger is the political argument that Ottawa is being unfair to the West and could have evenly applied any tax directly on fuel so that all Canadian consumers paid.

In that sense, Moe and Saskatchewan may have already won.

Looking for ways to live it up When I was a teenager my family owned a couple of small businesses at the provincial park and campground located 30 minutes from where we lived. I ended up with a fantastic summer job helping run a mini-golf course and paddle boat rentals.

One weekend some family friends came to visit. They My Outlook had a son who would have been Shelley Luedtke about 10 years old. Because he was younger than the rest of us and wouldn’t have wanted to hang out with the older kids, my dad told him he could play as much mini-golf as he liked. For the next couple of hours, he ran from hole to hole sinking shot after shot as often as he could. When he completed a round he went back to the beginning, and did this over and over again.

His parents told him he could maybe slow down and enjoy himself a bit more, but he said he wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to play as much as he could and insisted he wanted to “live it up.”

My family was at a theme park on a beautiful summer night when our girls were quite young. As a final ride of the night our youngest daughter and I selected a spinning favorite while my husband took our older daughter for a return trip on one of the roller coasters. There was no longer a line-up for the attraction Madi and I were riding so we got right on. When the ride ended it was announced that anyone who wanted to could remain in their seats and ride again. So we did. And then again.

And then again. Our heads spun for quite some time after that but who was going to pass up that opportunity?

An opportunity exists when a set of circumstances makes it possible to do something. Although deferring the late-night stroke of luck at the theme park may have kept Madi and I from a dizziness-induced headache, there are other op-

portunities we should never pass up.

Managing Your Money: Reaching long-term investment with short-term responses - wrong Investors dread volatile markets and, too often, their response is to jump out of investments when the market goes down and attempt to jump back in when it goes up. But it’s a historical fact that markets will always fluctuate and the price of any stock or equity mutual fund is bound to be somewhat volatile in the short-term. The one proven approach for taking away much of your investment risk is simply this: time in the market. Study after study has proven that time in the market delivers much better returns than trying to time the market.

Here are some recent findings in support of a longterm investment strategy.

• Many of the strongest market returns occur in the periods immediately following sharp declines in equity markets. Since 1950, following the worst 12-month periods of performance on the S&P/TSX, the market has made solid gains just 12 months later with only one exception. And within five years, the markets were up significantly – meeting and exceeding long-term return

expectations.* •History has shown that economic recoveries following recessions are typically both strong and durable. In fact, periods of expansion that came on the heels of downturns averaged 57 months, or close to five years.

After 1960, the average period of expansion following a recession was even longer at 71 months, or close to six years.** • Although negative returns in the short-term are relatively frequent, the possibility of receiving a positive return greatly increases as the investment term lengthens. For example, between 1960 and 2015 staying invested in the market (S&P/TSX) for a year resulted in a positive return in 74.7% of the one-year periods, while staying invested for 15 years resulted in a positive return of 100% of the time.** • In any one-year period, the returns of the S&P/ TSX Composite Index have been as high as 86.9% and as low as -39.2%, a range of over 126%. However, when investors diversify their

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Did you happen to notice an increase in Police in the area? Our Crime Reduction Team visited from Battleford and they worked in the Estevan, Carnduff and Carlyle Detachment areas. In addition, our Traffic Members also increased their visibility in the area.

If you happen to sneak across the border, your stay may not be as long as you want. One individual was picked up by our Crime Reduction Team on a CBSA warrant. He was then escorted to cells and transported to Regina.

Members responded to several false alarms and collisions. One incident involved an erratic driver forcing another vehicle off the highway.

Patrols were made but the offending vehicle was not located. Both occupants of the offending vehicle were wearing ball caps . . . in the winter . . .

First Responders were dispatched to a vehicle that went off the road on Highway 13 in Carlyle. Through our investigation it appears to be a medical issue and we followed up with SGI. Fortunately, there were no apparent injuries and the sole oc-

cupant was transported

by EMS to the Hospital for an assessment. Unfortunately, a bystander utilized profanity while loudly criticizing the response time of the First Responders. The information obtained by First Responders did not warrant a “Lights and Siren” response and although it may seem like it took a long time First Responders were on scene in under 10 minutes after the initial call was made.

If you don’t like how we respond, approach us and talk to us. We don’t bite. Communication provides clarification. When you call 911 they triage the call and if EMS is required they get called first, then the 911 operator calls our dispatch, who then call us. This can take more time than anyone would be comfortable with, but that is the reality we face.

Trust me when I say, we don’t like the time delay, but it is sometimes out of our control.

We had a domestic where one party was charged with assault. It appears alcohol aggravated the situation.

We had another physical confrontation that is under investigation. Many allegations have been brought to the attention of the Police, however, we are still investigating being the cooperation is limited and we are unsure if there is anyone being completely truthful with us.

We have had some

lazy people who have a hard time taking care of their dogs.....maybe they are just afraid of the cold? You can’t just let your dogs run free, and when they are outside and not in your yard, like on the walking trail you need to pick up their packages.

Two off duty Members called in a reported erratic driver. They followed the vehicle which was travelling in and out of oncoming traffic and fortunately the driver was able to be dealt with before any collision took place. The driver was charged under the Criminal Code for Dangerous Driving and Impaired Driving offences after providing breath samples of 200/210 mg%.

Remember any citizen can call in a complaint and provide evidence which will only make our roadways safer.

We had a third hand report of a possible impaired driver. Patrols were made, however, the vehicle was not located.

Unfortunately by the time it goes from second hand to third hand the time delay limits our ability to locate the offending vehicle.

Members received an anonymous complaint of a possible impaired driver. The caller was uncooperative and we did not find anyone driving, however, we actually think the caller was the alleged impaired driver.....or maybe the passenger.

Members investigated several Uttering Threats allegations. In one the dispute started over where and who was piling snow. This is mostly a Canadian and northern USA phenomena, but it can involve the Police. Fortunately no charges were warranted.

An individual on electronic monitoring was found to be breaching their release conditions by consuming alcohol. They are now in custody.

On Feb. 14 Jaye and Teresa Lemieux, Andy Girard, Dennis and Betty Burnett, Dale and Linda Potapinski left for Bemidji, MN where they all attended the Induction ceremonies in honor of Denis Lemieux into the Bemidji Hockey Hall of Fame over the weekend. They met up with other members of the Lemieux family who had also gone for the event.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent the long weekend (Feb. 16-18) in Minot where they visited with Shelly’s sisters Dicie Sauder and Karen and Ron Thunshell. Tim and Ainsley also spent some time improving their skiing skills.

Jeff Cowan arrived at the Cowan Farm on Feb. 17 where he spent the day visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel and also visited with friends before heading back to Regina.

Adam Cowan and friends Chrissy and Jared spent Feb. 21 at the Cowan Farm where they enjoyed sledding around the area and also visiting with Grandpa and Grandma Cowan.

The Alida Rec. Board have finalized the plans for their Murder Mystery Dinner Theater and they will soon be decorating the Alida Hall for the event.

There are either individual or corporate tables of 8 tickets available – Gail reports that they have beginning to sell. With only a limited amount of tickets do make sure to get yours as soon as possible.

The Alida Curling Club hosted their annual Ladies Bonspiel on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the rink with many spectators in attendance as they watched and cheered their favorite team on the ice. Look for pictures and a report on the event.

The “Breakfast at the Rink” on February 17 had Kitchen group #3 serving up 41 breakfasts – good job done guys and gals. The “Breakfast at the Rink” on February 24 had Kitchen group #4 at the helm and they served up 34 breakfasts - another good job guys and gals. The Breakfast Challenge total remains at 54. It is always good to see all the familiar faces coming back for breakfast every week and braving the cold weather. Next week we are into the last month for breakfasts (only 4 left). It is Kitchen group #1 at the helm – see you at the rink.

I have been in my glory this past week as the Tournament of Hearts has been televised and I was able to watch most of the games until Friday when our old receiver hit the rhubarb (as they say) and no amount of tries could one get it to work – so now it’s a Wait until the mail arrives with the new receiver – sure do hope it’s here before this coming weekend so I’m able to watch most of the Brier curling. The Brier is going to be held in Brandon this year, so I imagine there will be quite a few fans heading to Brandon.

Here’s hoping that Team Muyers can go all the way Go Saskatchewan Go. I was very proud of our Team Saskatchewan girls – they made a very good showing for their first time curling together – to make it into the quarter and semi-final rounds before falling out – I think is great – hope we see them again next year and just maybe they can go all the way. Hey I’m pleased with the outcome of the tournament as Team Alberta (Carey) defeated Team Ontario (Homan).

Now it’s onto the Worlds for them – Go – Team Alberta – Go. I also really enjoyed it when they mentioned the Over All Top Women Curlers – Lead was Dawn McEwen; 2nd – Jill Officer; 3rd – Jan Betker; Skip – Jennifer Jones; Team – Sandra Schmirler – Awesome.

Hard to believe that we are at the end of another month – slow but sure Spring is coming and I can’t wait. Keep your eyes on the lookout for the LION – hope he comes in quietly on March 1 for a change.

Gee I think he’s been roaring most of February and must have a sore throat now. It will be very nice if the Lamb comes at the end of the March and stays out so that this winter may end.

Fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal sing ‘Day O’ when they get excited about their Habs, but in Washington, and all around the National Hockey League for that matter, a drawn-out version of “AAAAAA OOOOOO” should be part of the night’s entertainment in tribute to the greatest sniper of our time, the Great 8, Alex Ovechkin.

The Capitals captain, whose personal career highlight came last June when Washington won its first Stanley Cup, is a goal-scorer’s goal scorer and it seems he’s getting better with age.

There’s no argument about this, however: Ovechkin is the best Russian-born player to ever play in the NHL. Pavel Datsyuk, Evgeni Malkin, Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov had or are having terrific careers, but it’s hard to argue with more than 650 goals, and counting. Just 33 years old, Ovechkin doesn’t seem to be slowing down. His fans bring out their calculators, punch in a few numbers and voila! — five more 50-goal seasons or seven 35-goal campaigns and even the 894-goal total of the greatest of all time, Wayne Gretzky, would be eclipsed by Ovechkin on the NHL’s career goal-scoring list.

toward a 58- or 60-goal season, Ovechkin would record the second most prolific scoring season of his career, trailing only the 65 goals he tallied in his third season in the league. But he has been a model of consistency, with seven 50-plus-goal seasons and a career low of 32 goals in 201213. Most NHLers would give up their red Ferrari or annual trip to Kauai in exchange for a single 32-goal season.

NHL goalies know where Ovechkin will be and what he will attempt to do while the Capitals are on the power play, but are virtually powerless to stop him. He sets up near the left face-off circle, waits while his mates pass it around enough to get the goaltender leaning a particular way and then quickly drift the puck over to Ovechkin, who’s already winding up while the puck is en route. Then, in a blur, he fires the puck in excess of 100 MPH and, more often than not, beats the overmatched netminder, setting off yet another celebration.

The future Hall of Famer is not just about goal-scoring, however.

He plays with an obvious joy on the ice and despite a rugged style of play, he’s durable. Only once in his career has he missed more than 10 games in a season.

The late Denis Lemieux of Alida attended Bemidji State College and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1975. In 2008 he was post-humously inducted into Bemidji University Hockey Hall of Fame. This was in recognition of being one of 50 great hockey players in the last 50 yers to come out of Bemidji.

He was named most valuable player on the college team three years in a row.

In 1975 Denis decided to return to Alida to farm with his father.

On Feb. 14, 2019, Denis’ five children, along with some spouses and some grandchildren and also a number of other family members, attended the induction ceremonies in honor of Denis.

Coalers brings Cougars’ season to a halt

Turgeon scored twice in the third and Fox scored our fifth of the game. Josh Brown and Brandon Lequyer helped out on 2 of the goals.

Brett Turegon had 2 assists on the night and Kelly Currie had the “hat-trick” of assists for the night, helping out on three of the goals. It was a 4-1 game (for Bienfait) after the first and we just couldn’t close that gap!

Game 3 was in Carlyle on Tuesday, Feb. 19. It was do or die for the boys and they played great forcing a game 4 with a win of 5-2.

McLean started this game off for the boys again, scoring 11 minutes into the first, with some quick passes back and forth from Boutin and Greenwood.

Kelly Currie scored the second goal with help from Morrison and Turgeon.

Two goals were scored by both teams in the second, making it a 4-2 after 2. Turgeon and Morrison scored for the Blue and White with Kelly Currie, Zach Brown, Fox and Geiger getting the assists.

Ben Johnstone scored the lone goal in the third with help from Fox. The series continues and it’s off to Bienfait for game 4 on Friday.

Thank you to Joel Myrglod and his team, from Merit Ford, for sponsoring a Shoot To Win a 2018 Ecosport! It was 20 shots in 20 seconds and Ambrose Hengen was our lucky shooter. Unfortunately, they didn’t all go in as it’s not as easy as you would think! Ambrose is still a winner as Merit Ford graciously awarded him with a free oil-change and vehicle detailing.

Game 4 in Bienfait: Korby Boutin scored the only goal in the first

The PureChem Cougars travelled to Bienfait on Feb. 22 for game four in a best of five series. The team was hoping to tie the series up at 2 each on this night, but it wasn’t in the books, as the Coalers took the game 4-1, eliminating the Cougars from further playoff action.

The PureChem Cougars’ season came to an end on Feb. 22, when the Bienfait Coalers came out on top, winning the series 3 games to 1. period with Billy Greenwood getting the helper.

We started the game winning the first period and then Bienfait strikes in the second period, scoring 3, unanswered goals. Bienfait ended the game, scoring an

empty net goal and winning the game 4-1.

It was a great series, as there were some awesome shots and scoring chances made by both teams that were denied by numerous of stellar saves! Thank you to all

of the Cougar fans, volunteers, sponsors and partners! It was a fun year and your support is greatly appreciated!

Agriculture relies on export markets

By Calvin Daniels The other day, on one of those glorious afternoons when I was actually off for holidays, I was perusing Facebook primarily as a time sink, when I happened upon a post that I found interesting.

The post called for Canadian gas stations to sell only Canadian gas, and for stores to sell only Canadian beef.

While the post was rather specific in focusing attention on only two things, it made sense in terms of wanting to support the economy of Western Canada as oil and beef are rather significant to the region.

On the surface the idea would seem to make excellent sense.

Frankly I’ve often thought there should be a maple leaf tag on any product made in Canada so that consumers could support local producers, and local jobs.

But, then I paused long enough to remember items in a store are not so easily defined by some arbitrary border line on a map.

And, of course it’s important to remember the Canadian beef and oil sectors do rely heavily on export sales to be viable.

We only need to recall what happened in 2003 when a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy was identified in a cow in Alberta. Borders closed to Canadian exports of cattle and beef and the country was left with mountains of beef to deal with in a country with not enough people to deal with it. The cattle sector was shaken to its core with massive losses piling up until the BSE scare passed.

The Canadian agriculture sector in particular relies on access to export markets to be viable. It would be difficult to access those markets if we suddenly went to a Canadian only in-store system here.

The idea of a label works no better.

Producers in Canada fought long and hard against the idea of Country of origin labelling (COOL), in the United States because it was seen as a major detriment to market access of Canadian beef.

The issue becomes when does beef become only from a particular country? Is a calf born in Alberta forever Canadian? Or, if that calf is sold to a U.S. feedlot when it’s 500-pounds, does it become American beef at some point as it grows toward being ground into hamburger?

And, what about from a Canadian perspective, what do you label that

same calf born here, finished in the States and then the steaks sold in a Canadian store?

The complexity of trade, and the need for open access as possible to foreign markets unfortunately make a sell Canadian only system one more likely to hamstring key sectors than it is to be supportive of Canada’s economy.

week. Genna was a junior star for Team Galusha of NWT. Last week during school break, Rowan and Nolton Yanko visited with their grandparents, Ross and Joanne Corkish. They attended the Flyers game on Friday night and returned home to Regina in time to attend the Pats game Friday night.

Sympathy to Harold and Faith Boehmer on the passing of their

daughter, Lisa Lane. She passed away on Feb. 18 in her 51st year. Interment will be in Walpole Cemetery, Mar. 2.

Last month two new stain glass windows were installed at the Wawota United Church. On Sunday, Feb. 24 a dedication service was held.

One of the windows was donated in memory of Cyril Hutchison. It depicted stalks of wheat in front of a fertile field remembering Cyril many

years as a farmer and his faithful dedication to the church. The second window was in memory of Shelley Corkish and shows an anchor above a Bible in memory of Shelley’s love of camping.

Shelley was the church’s secretary and a valued member of RTR. Shelley’s brother, Pat Corkish of Two Hills, Alberta visited with his parents Moe and Saundra Corkish and attended the dedication event.

Joan Olive Chapman

Barb Coderre July 5, 1957 to December 11, 2018 We are deeply saddened to say farewell to a fun-loving, hard-working and incredibly special woman.

Barb was a very devoted wife to her husband Mike Coderre prior to his passing.

Barb was also a very devoted daughter to her parents Stanley Curtis, who was living with her at the time of her passing, and her mother Florence who passed away in 2016. Barb was a loving sister and aunt and will live forever in all of our memories. Barb loved her dog Maxi and spent most of her time playing with, and taking Maxi for walks.

Barb was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba to Stan and Florence Curtis at a time when they owned a grocery store in Creighton, Sask. and lived in a small apartment above the store.

Barb developed a passion for the piano and became a very good pianist during her childhood. Barb’s initial dream was to be a school teacher which lead her to University in Saskatoon. Barb’s first love came about at the same time and she made the hard decision to pursue marriage instead of teaching and soon was planning a wedding and moving to Snow Lake.

While those plans did not work out the way she wanted them to, in true Barb fashion she did not let that get her down and she moved back to Flin Flon to get things in order so she could move on with her life.

Along came Mike and the next thing Barb was married and happily living at Kenosee Lake. In 1994 came a big move to Wynyard to the “round” house where she lived until her passing. Barb grew very close with Mike’s family who always treated Barb as their own daughter and sister.

Barb always had a passion for animals, from the very first stray cat she ever brought home. She always wanted to look after everyone’s animals. She was the neighborhood dog walker and always saved bones for everyone’s dogs in the neighborhood. Barb always had at least one pet. They were always her pride and joy and lived the best of lives with Barb as their parent. The last of these of course was Maxi, who Barb loved very much and never wanted to be apart from.

Barb is predeceased by her husband Mike, her sister Marianne and her mother Florence.

Barb will be forever missed especially by her father Stan who loved her so very much; brothers: Roger (Dafina), Stefan & LG; Ken (Lidia), Kyle, Kristopher and Kayla; Marianne’s children Curtis and Chace; special cousin Marcia (Jack), Chelsea and Tiffany; and the entire Coderre and Melsted families.

Barb’s family would like to thank everyone for the cards, foods and words of sympathy we received on her passing. To everyone who attended her celebration, you will all be warmly remembered.

Pause for Reflection

How to get to the heaven we all want A young man approaches a woman and asks, “Do you love me?” “I don’t know you,” replies the woman. “Who are you?”

If Jesus were to ask us today, “Do you love me?”

How many of us would have to honestly respond, “I don’t know you. Who are you?” St Catherine of Sienna said knowledge of God precedes love of God. We are ready to embrace God after we get to know him through scripture and prayer.

When we were children heaven was an easy concept. In heaven we could have all the candy we want.

We could eat all the lumps of brown sugar we wanted and still want more. Ice cream was available in abundance, and you know the rest.

As Adults heaven became less attractive. Who wants to pray and worship all the time? That kind of love is hard to imagine for mortals. We need to become little children again. Children love and don’t hold grudges. Children play and laugh everyday, even in war-torn areas of the world.

If we were to draw up a plan to get to heaven, we would need to keep it simple so our inner child could accept it. Father Ed Broom gives us a formula for achieving heaven so our Lord Jesus will be there to greet us when we die.

Number 1, live each day as if it were the last.

Indeed, it could be. Number 2, say “No,” to sin and “Yes” to God. Sin brings sadness. Our feet should be happy carrying good news.

Number 3, continue to do what you are doing.

Live your present life as a sign, doing your duty and obligations for the honour and glory of God. Number 4, if you fall, get up quickly. We are all sinners, so get back into grace again today.

Number 5, love. Love God; love your neighbour.

In the end we will be judged on how we have loved.

Number 6, bring others to heaven. Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, “If you want to get to heaven, take somebody with you.” It is that simple.

SSGA welcomes enhancements to Saskatchewan Crop Insurance The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) welcomes the enhancements announced by the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC). The enhancements will improve coverage against damage to forage crops.

“The dry conditions of the last two years have shown that producers need risk management programs that they can count on. The enhancements announced today make forage insurance coverage more reflective of local precipitation conditions and forage production capacity,” said Henry McCarthy, who attended the announcement on behalf of SSGA President Bill Huber. “These enhancements are a positive step in enabling producers to better manage their forage production risks.”

For 2019, coverage levels offered on the forage rainfall insurance program will triple in some soil zones for tame grazing and will increase over one and a half times

for native grazing acres.

The increased coverage will better reflect actual production capacity and will allow producers to customize their coverage according to their risk comfort level.

The number of weather stations will be boosted by 30 per cent, meaning that most farms and ranches will be located within 30 kilometres of a station.

The data collected by these stations will provide a more precise indication of highly-localized rainfall statistics, making for more accurate assessment of forage losses. Previously, some producers had indicated weather stations were too far away from their land and did not accurately show the true weather situation for that land.

The SCIC also announced enhancements to corn coverage. With corn growing in popularity as a grain and forage crop, the addition of a $90 establishment benefit and the corn rainfall program, which

has up to $300 per acre coverage options will help to level the playing field with other grain crops.

The SSGA has been advocating for changes to the forage insurance program. At the Annual General Meeting last June, members passed a resolution calling for dialogue with SCIC to improve the scope of coverage and coverage levels.

“We appreciate SCIC responding to producers’ concerns,” McCarthy said. “They have been actively engaged with the industry’s forage working group, and they have been able to implement almost all of our original recommendations.”

Number 10, Mary: Queen of Saints and Angels.

Mary is the quickest way to Jesus and heaven. Mary will intercede for us. We stand with John at the foot of the cross when Jesus tells us, “She is your Mother.”

How many times do we say the Hail Mary…

“Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

Alida Ladies reigning champs defeated Submitted The Alida Curling Club held their annual Ladies Bonspiels on Saturday, February 23. 2019. There was a good crowd of spectators at the rink to cheer along their favorite team. After the first set of games was completed the 2018 reigning champs, (Alida’s Prime) had fallen to the B side.

It was also time for a break in the bonspiel where approximately 54 (including spectators and curlers) all enjoyed a delicious fried chicken supper.

A few moments were also set aside where many took the time to watch the final few ends of the Page 1-2 playoffs of the Tournament of Hearts which to everyone’s demise saw Saskatchewan defeated and falling to the semi-finals to play against Ontario Sunday morning.

Now it was time to get back to our own bonspiel as the final four teams took to the ice. In the A-Event “Old McDonald” Team was up against Team Spice Girls. In the B-Event it was the Dead Zone Team against Alida’s Prime which resulted in Alida’s Prime Team coming out on top.

This leaves the A-Event result which saw “Old McDonald” keeping her favorite animals (Cow, Pig and Chick) under control as they defeated the Spice Girls. To end the bonspiel the voting of the Bestdressed team resulted in the Spice Girls winning.

Congratulations girls, your idea was cute, quick, easy and puzzling for some to figure out. Congratulations to the winners of the bonspiel as well.

The Alida Curling Club appreciates everyone’s participation whether it was in curling, supporting the supper, donating prizes, volunteering ones time with the meal and with the caretaking of the ice.

Without everyone’s help this event wouldn’t be a go.

See you again next year.

Ice fishing: five ways to stay safe

Ice fishing is a fantastic way to enjoy winter’s natural beauty in the company of friends and family. However, venturing out onto a frozen lake isn’t without its perils. Remain safe while reeling in your next big catch by doing these five things: 1.

Closely inspect the ice. Know that clear blue ice is the strongest, opaque white ice is only half as strong (or twice as fragile) and dull grey ice is very fragile (and therefore extremely unsafe for fishing).

2.

Measure ice

thickness. If you’re fishing on a waterway or off the coast (in other words, anywhere besides a lake or pond) check the ice in several spots, as currents and tides result in uneven ice formations. A minimum thickness of 10 centimetres is recommended if the ice is blue and 20 to 30 centimetres if the ice is snowy.

Fish in a group.

Never head out alone on the ice and make sure that everyone you’re with is familiar with emergency protocols. Always be aware

of where all members of your group are located.

4.

Exercise caution. Don’t go out on the ice when it’s dark out, avoid drinking alcohol and be mindful that even thick ice isn’t 100 per cent safe.

5.

Bring the right equipment. The following items are indispensible for ensuring your safety and comfort while out on the ice: a lifejacket, a warm snowsuit, spare clothes, a first aid kit, a flashlight, waterproof matches, a survival blanket, hot drinks and ice picks.

Four ways to hit the slopes this winter Ready to hit the slopes? Here are four activities for anyone heading to the mountains this winter.

1. Downhill skiing: also known as alpine skiing, this is the most popular way to zip down the mountain slopes. Ski resorts have downhill ski runs for all ability levels: groomed runs of all different pitches, runs with moguls, runs where you can weave through trees, and for expert skiers, there are backcountry bowls.

2.

Cross-country skiing: moving off the

slopes and onto flat paths or rolling landscapes around the mountain, cross-country skiing can be a leisurely paced activity or a great way to work up a sweat.

It involves special skis that leave you free to lift your heel and to, aided by your poles, propel yourself forward with a walk-and-glide technique.

3. Telemark skiing: this activity combines elements of downhill and cross-country skiing, requiring participants to navigate ski runs strapped into skis

similar to those used on cross-country trails.

Telemark skiing further differentiates itself from other types of skiing with its special turning technique, which involves skiers dropping their knees and lifting their heels. It’s a great option for veteran skiers looking for a new challenge.

4.

Snowboarding: on a snowboard, you can tackle all the same terrain as you can on downhill skis. However, carving through the snow on a board is a wholly different, but equally exhilarating, experience.

NIGHT SKIES | MARCH AN ASTRONOMY ARTICLE BY JAMES EDGAR The Moon begins this month with Saturn in a very close conjunction or occulted for some viewers, particularly in the Pacific, Central America, and southern North America. A day later, on the 2nd, Venus is 1.2 degrees north of the Moon. New Moon is on the 6th. In rapid succession, on the 9th, 11th, and 12th, the Moon is 5 degrees south of Uranus, 6 degrees south of Mars, and 1.9 degrees north of Aldebaran, respectively. On the 17th, Luna is 0.5 degrees south of the Beehive Cluster (M44). The Moon is full on the 20th. Jupiter is 1.9 degrees south of the Moon on the 26th, and on the 29th, Saturn is again occulted, which is not surprising, since a full lunar month has passed since March 1.

This event is visible from the southern Atlantic, Africa, and parts of southern India. For viewers in the west, it’s a very close conjunction at 0.05 degrees’ separation.

Mercury is visible in the western evening sky for a few days, but is quickly swallowed up in the Sun’s glare by the 5th, reappearing at month-end in

the eastern morning dawn sky.

Venus meets up with the Moon in the eastern morning twilight on the 2nd. The bright planet may present a challenge late in the month, as it hugs the horizon right at sunup. By month-end it is hidden in the Sun’s glare as it passes behind our star.

Mars begins the month quite high in the western evening sky, gradually moving eastward with each day. Watch for the nearby crescent Moon on the 11th.

Jupiter passes through the stars of the constellation Scorpius, near the centre of the Milky Way. Watch for a morning lineup of Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter, from left to right, in the second week of March. Then, on the 26th, the Moon and Jupiter share centre stage (see above).

Saturn is among the stars of Sagittarius, the Archer, trailing Jupiter across the sky during the day.

The Moon skirts by the Ringed Planet on the first day of the month, an occultation in some parts of the world. The waning gibbous Moon separates the

two gas-giant planets on the 27th, leading up to the second close conjunction on the 29th.

Uranus and Mars share the same part of the sky, with Uranus slightly lower and to the west of the Red Planet. The slender Moon passes by on the 9th and 10th.

Neptune is too close to the Sun to be seen.

Daylight Saving Time begins on March 10.

Spring equinox is on March 20.

The zodiacal light is visible in the western evening sky in the final two weeks of March, but the full Moon on the 20th will obscure this faint phenomenon.

AccuWeather 2019 spring forecast Dry spring to bring drought concerns to southern Alberta, Saskatchewan Drought conditions may expand across the Canadian Prairies throughout the spring as a dry and mild weather pattern takes hold across the region.

There are already pockets of moderate to severe drought across the region, including in Regina, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, according to the Canadian Drought Monitor.

These areas of drought could expand throughout the spring.

“I do not see any indications that we are headed toward a wet spring in this region,” Anderson said.

“Based on our forecast, we anticipate worsening drought for southern Saskatchewan and expanding into southern Alberta as the spring progresses,” he

added.

This could add even more stress to farmers across Saskatchewan that have been coping with drought conditions since 2017.

While rain may frequent the Prairies, melting snow could cause some minor flooding issues during some warmups earlier in the season.

“I predict an average spring flood risk along the Red River in southern Manitoba,” Anderson said.

Major temperature swing forecast across Western Canada midspring Winter will maintain its grip on western Canada throughout March, but a dramatic flip in the weather pattern is set to take place during the middle of the season.

Cold will linger from British Columbia to Sas-

katchewan through early spring after a harsh February, Anderson said.

“The main storm track is expected to shift up into northwestern British Columbia and southeastern Alaska by midspring, leading to persistent cloudy, windy and wet weather,” he said.

This northern shift in the storm track will allow frigid Arctic air to be replaced with milder air from Vancouver through Calgary.

Ski resorts across the Canadian Rockies may face an early end to the ski season due to the midspring warmup and the northern shift in the track of storms.

There may also be implications that last throughout the year, including the wildfire season.

“This may set the stage for a very warm and dry summer,” Anderson said.
