What is Dementia?

Submitted by Dolores Young On Thursday, Feb. 28, a presentation on the ABC’s of Dementia was held at the Legion Hut in Carlyle. Abby Wolfe, Public Awareness Co-ordinatior with the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan gave the presentation. Following is what she touched on: 10 WARNING SIGNS Warning signs must be a change from normal function for the person 1. Difficulty performing familiar tasks 2. Disorientation in time and space 3. Difficulty performing familiar tasks 4. Memory loss that affects day-to-day abilities 5. Misplacing things 6. Impaired judgement 7. Changes in personality, mood and behavior 8. Loss of initiative 9. Problems with language 10. Problems with abstract thinking Outlined is some of the key messages of our warning signs campaign: • By providing individuals and families with key information and support, the Alzheimer Society empowers people to live well with dementia.

• Dementia is about more than just memory loss.

There are 10 evidence-based changes that have been identified as warning signs for dementia. The warning signs involve a change in an individual’s abilities, behaviours or communication.

• It is important to learn about all of the warning signs because different types of dementia can affect the brain differently and may cause different warning signs. Alzheimer’s disease is just one type of dementia.

• To learn more about the warning signs, visit www.ABCDementia.ca or contact the Alzheimer Society today. The Alzheimer Society provides information about dementia free of charge. Individuals can call the Alzheimer Society toll free via the Dementia Helpline at 1877-949-4141.

Julie Hamilton has returned home after spending several months in Halifax. She was there supporting her mother, Helen Shiers who was recuperating from some medical issues. While Julie was away Terry spent some time visiting with daughter, Tracey Feil and family at Swift Current and Jill Willoughby and family at Medicine Hat. Kevin Lincoln has purchased the Rekken home on Choo-Foo Crescent. The Rekken family, Kaylan and Kelsey and children, Kayden, Kendyn and Kinley have moved to Carlyle. We wish them well in their new home.

Funeral mass for the late Cliff Easton was held at Christ the King R.C. Church, Regina on Feb. 28.

Tom and Cheryl Weatherald, Phil Weatherald and Gordon and Val Van Dresar were some of the many family and friends who showed their respects.

The Wawota Curling Club wound up their year with an evening of curling, lunch and fellowship last Friday evening. It was a very successful year and the club is looking forward to continued participation in the coming year.

The World Day of Prayer was held at Deer View

Lodge on Mar. 1. This is held every year with all three Wawota Churches participating. Several attended and heard the program that was prepared by the women of Slovenia. Short stories about the issues in this country were heard, accompanied with music and prayers.

Lunch and fellowship followed.

South Africa, Malawi, fires in the north and shoe boxes. When they see the pictures of the smiling faces they know that it has been a worthwhile venture. They are thankful for all donations, all those who delivered the dresses and shorts , the use of free facilities and all the willing hands who come out to produce these items. Anyone is welcome to join the group, and they meet every Tuesday afternoon at the Free Methodist Church, Cannington Wing.

Disclosure from government far too slow

By Murray Mandryk For those of us who had spent our adult, working lives demanding full-disclosure from governments, the SCN-Lavalin fiasco may just be the latest depressing episode.

Or at least, this has been the case so far.

As of the writing of this, former federal justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould was getting ready to testify before the House the Commons justice committee.

But while she had received a partial waiver that would allow her to disclose some conversations with government officials surrounding the prosecution of the international Montreal-based engineering and construction company, even Wilson-Raybould seemed to be downplaying expectations on what she could say.

Wilson-Raybould had already written to the justice committee saying that while she would be willing to speak, she wouldn’t necessarily be able to speak freely because on-going constraints “do nothing to release me from any restrictions that apply to communications while I served as minister of veterans affairs and in relation to my resignation from that post or my presentation to cabinet after I had resigned.»

Combined with cabinet and confidentially by which Wilson-Raybould and all ministers who swear the oath of office must abide, it seems increasingly doubtful the public is going to get the full disclosure it deserves from government.

This always seems to be the case in government where its members use their majority to hide information from the public.

Certainly, one gets the sense from the behaviour

by Liberal government members that hearing the truth from Wilson-Raybould or anyone else is about the last thing they want.

The Conservative and NDP MPs on the committee were justifiable angry last month when the majority Liberal members on the committee initially used their numbers last month to block not only Wilson-Raybould but also Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s chief of staff Katie Telford or former principal secretary Gerald Butts (who, mysteriously, has resigned his position).

According to Liberals MPs last month, having critical witnesses who could actually answer questions about allegations of undue pressure placed on the former justice minister isn’t actually the kind of thing lawmakers on a justice committee do. “The role of the justice committee is not an investigative body,” said Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault.

“At best, committees of the House of Commons are political theatre that can occasionally achieve good studies.”

But lest one feel too bad for the frustrated Conservatives on the committee, it’s worth noting that under former prime minster Stephen Harper they pulled the same stunt to block key witnesses from testifying at the Senate hearings investigating Senator Mike Duffy’s expenses.

Moreover, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer isn’t exactly making any commitments to do anything differently. Nor would Scheer commit to changing the rules around criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin related to the deferred prosecution agreement that the engineering company was allegedly lobbying for in its meetings with Trudeau and others. (Scheer was among those that met privately with SNC-Lavalin’s lobbyists.)

And here in Saskatchewan, we witnessed Saskatchewan Party government backbenchers block opposition requests that key government employees come forward to address legitimate questions on the overspending for land purchased by the Global Transportation Hub just outside Regina.

But as frustrating as this is, maybe it’s important to recognize that change comes slowly and in small increments.

There was a time not so long when the public didn’t have accountability through freedom of information or disclosure through the timely release of budgets and quarterly and mid-year updates.

The political system resisted each and everyone of these changes, too. Governments, once in power, don’t want to change rules that are to their advantage. But change did happen.

Sometimes, the best we can do is watch for the events that produce small changes.

That Wilson-Raybould is even appearing before this committee may just be such a small, baby step forward.

No invitations needed for some occasions It was career testing day in high school and we were told to take it seriously. I remember going through page after page of questions wondering how some could possibly relate to potential occupations, but answering them nonetheless. Some time later our individual print-outs arrived and we curiously scanned our profiles and shared with each other what careers we were encouraged to Shelley Luedtke look at. Of course the most fun occurred with the ones we perceived as totally off the mark.

A classmate who was a whisper short of six feet tall and boasting a well-developed physique was directed to consider being a jockey. A girl who would go to any length necessary to avoid bugs was advised to look at Entomology. Of course most of us had to look that word up to fully understand the irony.

Later on in my work as a career counsellor I used different types of tests, questionnaires and guides along with information about emerging careers to help direct students into conversations about their future. I remember when the career title Event Planner began to be included amongst the list of growing fields.

Although there were certainly people who had long been specializing in coordinating and planning large events, it often came under the umbrella of some other title or as an extension of another job description. Then it became an area all its own and is expected to see continued and steady growth through 2026 . While much of the field involves planning larger events like conferences, weddings or corporate gatherings, event planners are available to help anyone plan anything. Birthday parties, anniversary surprises, marriage proposals or any other event you want to pull off in grand style can be cause to hire an event planner.

An event is an activity or commemoration taking place at a particular time at a selected venue. It is something we plan for and look to with a sense of anticipation. But it doesn’t always need to be something particularly noteworthy to fall into that cat-

egory. There are people around us who are gifted at making even the seemingly mundane into an event.

They can add flair and bring a sense of celebration to something that may otherwise go unnoticed or perhaps unappreciated. Or…there are others who can deflate what could be a special event simply by injecting a discouraging or critical spirit into the mix.

Trying to rise above the efforts of those seeking to dampen the enthusiasm may be tough, but necessary, so that others can more fully enjoy and appreciate what could be made into an occasion.

Therein lies the challenge--but also the opportunity. Where one person may want o downplay the marking of a birthday, someone else may choose to do it up in style unique to them. The same could be said of New Year’s Eve, an anniversary, a promotion, the beginning of planting season, or even…the rising and setting of the sun. Indeed, shouldn’t each new sunrise and glorious sunset be deserving of note?

We should all be looking for the events that cause us to stop, to reflect, to express thankfulness and to celebrate, because what a loss to miss those moments, those milestones and even the minutiae of what we are given each day to observe, experience and contribute to.

Not everyone will feel the need to acknowledge the same events in the same way but that is fine. It just might mean as someone, somewhere turns the day into something special it will ignite the imagination of those around them to see it in a new way, too.

So what constitutes an event? Certainly a celebration uniting two lives in marriage. A retirement party honouring the completion of a career. A baptism. A graduation. But oh…so much more…such as the many things that just might go unnoticed. Like grocery shopping and taking time to recognize the abundance of what is available. Turning on a tap and being greeted by a stream of clean, drinkable water.

Opening a door into a home that is safe, warm and filled with the things that are important to you.

There are some events in our lives that a planner can help elevate to a new beautiful level, and others that we can make into events on our own. However, there are a whole range of other moments that we need to open our eyes to and see that it is an event all on its own. That’s my outlook.

When I purchased my first home and took on a mortgage, I had to keep convincing myself that I was doing the right thing. For those who are financially ready to make the move into home ownership, remember that it’s a long-term commitment filled with expenses (both expected and unexpected) and responsibilities.

That said, the upside to owning a home – not to mention the tax advantages – are why over two-thirds of Canadians are homeowners. It can be one of the best long-term investments you can make for your financial future.

Here are a few of the many things to keep in mind:

Planning. If you eventually want to own a home, start planning now. It may take years to save enough for a down payment and closing costs. You’ll also need to calculate how much you can afford to pay for a monthly mortgage, homeowner’s insurance, property taxes, renovations, furnishings and maintenance or repairs.

Qualifying for a loan. Even if you’ve saved enough, if your credit rating is poor, you may either not qualify for a loan or have to pay a higher interest rate. Work on repairing your credit at the same time you launch a savings plan.

Down payment. The rules surrounding loans and down payments have changed recently, and require much more from home owners in a shorter span of time. The maximum amortization period for government-insured homes is now 25 years. This means you have to pay more per month than before. Those who can muster enough money to make a 20 per cent down payment do not require mortgage default insurance. However, for everyone else who can’t afford that 20 per cent, they can expect to see a higher mortgage rate over the life of their mortgage. Depending on the value of the house, that higher interest rate could mean you are paying tens to hundreds of thousands more on the value of your home. Before you decide on how much

you want to spend on a home, speak to a bank’s mortgage specialist or a reputable mortgage broker who can walk you through scenarios that fit your situation.

Mortgages. A mortgage, which can be either fixed or variable, has three basic parts: a down payment (discussed above), monthly payments and fees. The monthly payment is the amount needed to pay off the mortgage over the amortization period and includes a payment on the principal of the loan as well as interest. The fees are all the costs you have to pay up front to get the loan. For more information about the different types of mortgages available, check out the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) ().

Financing options. Recently, the government of Canada introduced the Home Buyer’s Plan (HBP) to help first-time buyers finance their properties. HBP is a program that allows individuals to withdraw up to $25,000 tax free in a calendar year from their registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) to buy or build a home. Generally, any RRSP contributions must remain in the RRSP for at least 90 days before they can be withdrawn and funds used would have to be repaid back into your RRSP within 15 years. Another good resource is Practical Money Skills Canada, a free personal financial management site sponsored

by Visa Canada. It contains a guide to home ownership, including preparations you should take to qualify for financing and an overview of mortgages available for homebuyers. It also offers interac-

tive calculators, such as the Mortgage Payment calculator and How Much House Can You Afford? to help you along the way.

Home ownership is not without its share of headaches, but in the long run, it’s a strong investment in your future – and besides, it’s nice to be your own landlord.

87 people lost a vehicle for a week because of cellphone tickets last year “Confessions of a Reformed Distracted Driver” is part of the March Traffic Safety Spotlight Losing your vehicle for a week for something as trivial as being unable to leave your phone alone sounds pretty terrible, right?

Under The Traffic Safety Act, receiving a second $280 cellphone ticket within a year triggers an immediate roadside vehicle impoundment. That means the vehicle is towed from roadside and impounded for seven days, while the owner is stuck with the bill for towing and storage (usually at least $400). It also results in four demerits under SGI’s Safe Driver Recognition program.

“It’s a law that’s been in place since 2010 and was strengthened in 2017, but it’s something that warrants a reminder,” said Penny McCune, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “In 2018, 87 people found out the hard way as they saw their vehicle towed away for a week’s stay at a local impound lot. That is, by far, the highest number of seven-day cellphone ticket impoundments imposed since it became the law.”

If you think seizing a vehicle for seven days for a cellphone ticket is severe, consider this: Driver distraction or inattention is consistently a leading factor in collisions, injuries and fatalities on Saskatchewan roads, and it’s clear from the number of tickets – and seven-day impoundments – that police are taking it seriously. It’s why police are focussing on distracted driving as March’s Traffic Safety Spotlight.

“Our advice so you don’t hurt someone by driving while distracted or face those tough consequences and financial penalties? It’s simple: put the phone away,” McCune said.

Laura works full-time, is a full-time university student and the mom of a three-year-old daughter.

With the first ticket, she was simply holding her phone in her hand (the law states drivers aren’t allowed to “hold, use, manipulate or view a handheld electronic device” while operating a motor vehicle).

When she got the second ticket two months later, she was holding it again – this time on top of the steering wheel. That was enough for police to issue a ticket AND call a tow truck.

“I felt really guilty and ashamed when my car was towed,” Laura says. “I couldn’t believe I was caught a second time. I should have learned my lesson the first time. I had to bum rides from my friends just to go to the grocery story and I was constantly switching out a car seat into different friends’ vehicles just so I could get my daughter to daycare. That week was really hard.”

After losing the use of her vehicle for a week, and all the costs and inconvenience that came along with two distracted driving tickets, Laura says it’s a mistake she won’t make again: “When I’m driving, I don’t have my phone anywhere near me. It’s in my

And if you’re in a vehicle with someone who’s driving while using their cellphone, call them out. Let them know what they’re doing isn’t cool, and could cost them, big-time.

Here are some more tips: • Put your phone in the glove box, a purse, even the trunk. Or hand it off to a passenger before you begin driving.

• Put it on “Do not disturb”, or Airplane mode before you set out.

• If you need to use it, safely pull over to the side of the road.

• Set your playlist and your GPS before you go.

• Use voice-activated functions to change songs or get directions.

“Our traffic members garnered intelligence which led to them preparing a search warrant for a residence in

Arcola. Our detachment with Carlyle Traffic Services, Weyburn Traffic Services, and Estevan Traffic Services did a search warrant, found some stolen property, what we believe to be some drugs, and two individuals were arrested, detained, and the charges will be forthcoming.”

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons As always we dealt with false alarms, well being checks, mental health files and minor collisions.

You may wonder what is a well being check . . . or you may not? The short version is, if someone is worried about someone who they have not seen for a while, or talked to.

Sometimes they don’t want to go check on the individual because they are afraid of what they will find, and other times they are too far away.

Sometimes when the Police do these checks we are not well received, like really who wants to see the Police at their residence?

Especially early in the morning or late at night. Ok, maybe not a short version.

We responded to a request for assistance from EMS in relation to an uncooperative individual that had been assaulted. EMS managed to get the victim in the ambulance and when Members attended the hospital they discovered an individual that had been assaulted so severely they were not recognizable by the Members. The investigation is continuing, however, we don’t believe we will obtain the cooperation of the victim to obtain the evidence required to prosecute anyone.

Members responded to a complaint of intoxicated individuals causing problems at a residence. Upon arresting one of the subjects another was arrested for Breaching their release conditions. Were the Members ever surprised to find out this individual was no longer on conditions of no alcohol. I have to be honest I think the subject was just as surprised. They were released at the location of the arrest and were just left to carry on in their intoxicated state.

Just because you know who hit your vehicle does not mean we can prove to the Courts who hit your vehicle.

This was the case of a hit a run over the last week.

Although we suspect the complainant is correct we have no proof to take

to court.

A couple of times over the past few months it has been brought to our attention that Members are choosing to deal with things when off duty, be it an individual parking illegally, someone swearing in a public place (like an arena), or dealing with an impaired driver. The issue is Members of the RCMP have an obligation to do something. If they ignore something they could possibly get in trouble. Personally I would rather get in trouble for doing something than not doing something.

A business was the victim of shoplifting. We have great video of the offence and the accused was located and it looks like it will be dealt with outside of the Court process.

We had an interesting individual in Court facing a charge of obstruction. The individual had refused to identity themselves to the Police after committing a minor traffic offence. For this they were arrested, identified and subsequently released. In court they commenced by identifying themselves by a number and then with their first name and the title “House of (Last Name). They refused to identify themselves and from our investigation they decline to admit to their date of birth being it is only hear say from their mother. We know it was the individual, however, the Judge and Crown were not taking any of their quotes from some big binder and issued a warrant. We refer to these individuals as “Freemen on the Land” They don’t like paying taxes, nor do I, but they don’t pay them which is the difference.

They choose not to obtain driver licences or get insurance for their vehicles, but they sure like the health care. This saga will continue.

We are investigating reports of dogs being shot. Most of us are dog lovers, but we must be realistic, if your dogs run loose they tend to annoy people. When you annoy people they often do things they should not do. The moral of the story is don’t let your dogs run loose. We do not condone shooting dogs.

One individual received a 72-hour sus-

pension and related vehicle seizure. Why people continue to drink and drive amazes me.

If you can not see out of your side view mirrors or your rearview mirror you may find yourself with a $115 fine which was the case with one individual that also received a speeding ticket. If you have sleds on a platform, which sits in the back of your pickup truck get extensions for your truck mirrors.

I get it, I get it, nobody wants to pay a ticket and nobody wants their teenager to get a ticket. I also understand that when you were a teenager and when I was a teenager we could stuff a vehicle full of friends and drive anywhere we wanted. Things change folks and the reason there is a restriction on how many occupants is for safety reasons.

Peer pressure, too many people can distract the driver and trust me too many tragedies. Now, of course if your teenager chooses to drive with more occupants than permitted, they could get a $150 ticket and if the passengers choose not to wear their seatbelts, they should expect to get seatbelt tickets, which in this case two individuals received $175 tickets.

If you are a driver and you wear your seatbelt and your passenger(s) choose not to wear their seatbelt they can become flying objects. Trust me the driver gets banged up

real bad by the passenger that flies back and forth in the rollover. Now if you have a child in the vehicle please make sure they are wearing a seatbelt or in an appropriate child safety seat, even if it is just for a short drive.

One parent is now dealing with a $175 ticket.

If you don’t want to get a stop sign ticket stop at the stop sign. If you don’t want a ticket for speeding, slow down.

If you choose to do 125 in a 100 zone and then miss the sign advising you that you are entering an 80 zone don’t get mad at the Police Officer for giving you a big ticket, especially if you are known to travel through the 80 zone frequently.

Tickets were issued for liquor in a vehicle - $360, window tint - $115, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, fail to produce registration certificate - $100, drive without a valid licence $150, fail to wear a seatbelt - $175 and most expensive speeding ticket was for $562.

Warnings were issued for fail to provide drivers licence, Fail to stop at stop sign, speeding, obstructed licence plate, fail to wear seatbelt, drive with undue care and attention, operate an unregistered trailer, and fail to wear a seatbelt properly.

Inspection tickets were issued for inadequate brake light, remove window tint, replace windshield and mudflaps.

Jays say Guerrero, Jr. not quite ready (wink!)

At the age of 19, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — a Canadian citizen because he was born in Montreal when his dad, Vlad Sr., played with the Expos from 1996-2003 — is, and has been for more than a year, the Toronto Blue Jays No. 1 prospect.

But the prodigious hitter with vast potential will start the season with the AAA Buffalo Bisons until, oh, about the third or fourth week of April.

Seasoning, the Jays will say. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Further development needed, they’ll add. Another couple of winks. Not quite ready yet, the Jays general manager Ross Atkins will repeat.

While Atkins might wink while uttering those words, Jays’ fans eyes will be rolling. There hasn’t been a 19-year-old player more ready than Guerrero to step into a major league team’s lineup. He slammed 20 homers and

batted .381 in AA and AAA last year. But, just as Atlanta kept Ronald Acuna, Jr., down on the farm until late April before calling him up and watching him romp to the National League’s rookie-of-the-year title, Guerrero will bide his time in the minors and the Jays’ brass will continue to fudge the truth about the reason why.

It’s simple, really. If a player is on a majorleague roster for at least 172 days, it counts as a full season of service.

After six years of service time, the player is eligible for free agency. By not adding Guerrero to the major-league roster until around the third week of April, his 2019 service time is — wow, wouldn’t you know it! — just fewer than 172 days.

The MLB Players’ Association doesn’t approve of such roster manipulation. It tries to provide as many jobs and financial opportunities as possible for its players. But you can’t blame Jays’ management for trying to maximize the availability of a star player such as Guerrero.

Jays’ fans may lament the youngster’s AAA stint for three weeks or so, but those same fans will be happy in 2025 when Guerrero is in the

final year of his contract — barring the signing of an extension before becoming eligible for free agency.

But if Guerrero is as good as touted, he’ll almost certainly let his contract expire and explore his value on the free market. He’ll look at what Bryce Harper signed for earlier this month — $330 million from the Phillies for 13 years — and harbour similar, or greater, dreams in 2026.

So no, Guerrero is not going to start the season with the Blue Jays. He could hit 20 spring training home runs, drive in 50 runs and bat .625, but Atkins will say that Guerrero needs a little more minor league seasoning.

He’ll wink. And the baseball world will understand.

Farming and raw products

By Calvin Daniels The future of farming may well rely on its ability to backfill raw products as society becomes more aware of just what its decisions as consumers mean to the natural world.

Without a doubt there is increased awareness regarding what the impact of what we do has on the environment.

Society is increasingly concerned when we hear about elephants being killed for their tusks, or what destruction of grasslands might mean to burrowing owls or black-footed ferrets, and that is generally a positive thing.

Moving forward consumers are also going to send messages with what they decide to purchase.

For example, a recent online Leader-Post article detailed “a report on tissue paper use gave failing grades to the leading toilet paper, tissue and paper towel brands for using only virgin fibre pulp, mostly from Canada’s old boreal forests.”

The report called The Issue With Tissue, noted that the United States in particular drive the demand for the soft-

est tissue “with the average American using almost three rolls each week and major manufacturers spurning alternative fibres …

“The U.S. is followed

by Germany and Britain in annual toilet paper consumption. They far out-pace the other nations. Canada isn’t in the top 10.”

Instead of looking at alternative fibres, manufacturers turn to soft woods predominantly from Canada’s forests.

The report is quoted as noting, “When the boreal and other forests are degraded, their capacity to absorb man-made greenhouse gas emissions declines. In addition, the carbon that had been safely stored in the forests’ soil and vegetation is released into the atmosphere, dramatically undermining international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

The solution would be to have tissue paper made from alternative materials and that is where farmers could play a significant role.

The story even suggests a couple of alternatives, bamboo, and of more interest to farmers

here is wheat straw.

Another obvious answer would be hemp, a fibre source that has long been overlooked because of concerns with its relation to marijuana. The potential for hemp fibre in a wide range of products, and when you consider the tissue industry is valued at $31 billion in revenue every year in the U.S., it would be a massive market for farmers.

But the industry is unlikely to rock a $31 billion boat without a push from somewhere.

There are two possible ways to push an industry, one being government legislation, created to protect the soft-wood forests.

The second, and certainly the preferred method, would be for consumers to seek out tissues with alternative source materials, pushing manufacturers to make changes to hold market share.

Consumers can make a difference based on their purchasing choices if they choose to use that power effectively.

And, that might open new markets for farmers.

Sports

Hanging up the laces after a lifetime of memories Submitted Hockey has been a huge part of Kelly Currie’s life starting when he was just a baby. Traveling around, watching his dad play, put the love of the game in his heart as soon as he could walk and hold a stick.

Kelly followed in his father’s footsteps with many successes in the sport and even got to play with him for a couple of years.

Kelly was 16 years old when he started to play senior hockey and joined his dad, Garnie, on the bench with the Wawota Flyers. Kelly played in five All-Star games and one of them with his dad in 1988.

Garnie, was back on the ice for one game of Big Six Hockey during the 04-05 season, when Kelly and his two brothers Mike and Bob, all played for the Wawota Flyers for one season. Garnie suited-up for a game against the Carnduff Red Devils and Kelly’s kids; Ty and Taylor joined them on the ice for warm-up. It was great to have three generations out on the ice altogether.

Kelly has played senior hockey for 26 years.

He has played 13 years in Carlyle, seven in Wawota, two in Unity, two in Spiritwood, one in Carnduff and one in Rocanville.

Kelly has had many successes throughout his career. He has won to his credit: Unity Miners; 3 Star Player and Top Scorer, Spiritwood Imperials; Top Scorer, MVP, 3 Star and most Gentlemanly Player, Rocanville’s; MVP and Top Scorer, Carnduff Red Devils; Top Scorer and MVP, Wawota Flyers; Greg Greenbank Top Scorer and Ted Denis MVP, Carlyle Cougars; Leading Scorer, MVP and Most Dedicated.

Kelly won League Titles with the Wawota Flyers in 1991 and 2005. He won the league scoring titles in both the Triangle and Bix 6 Hockey Leagues. He is the only player in the Big Six to have won the scoring title with three different teams!

Kelly, like his father, started their Senior hockey careers in their early teen years (Garnie at 14 and Kelly at 16) and ended them in their 40’s (Garnie at 40 and Kelly at 46). Kelly says that his greatest accomplishments were, “Being able to play senior with his dad, Ty and his brothers”. His best memories are; “all of the great guys he’s had a chance to meet and play alongside. Hanging around your teammates and all the fun that comes with that. The games, dressing room and fun away from the rink with the guys and their families.”

You’ll still see Currie around the rink, as he’ll be there to cheer on the Cougars, his students and in a few years, his grandson Kitt.

Midget Cougars hoping to bring home a provincial banner Diane Johnson Sports Contributor It’s been awhile since a Provincial Champions Banner has been raised at the Carlyle Rink, but our Midgets are on track to bring one home. The Carlyle Cougar Midget team consists of boys from Wawota, Rocanville, Manor, Kenosee, Alameda as well as Carlyle.

On February 6, those boys traveled to Esterhazy and won 6-2. Esterhazy then came to Carlyle on February 13 and our boys took another 9-4 win. A trip to Wynyard was next and that resulted in a 4-1 win on February 23. March 2 saw Carlyle hosting Wynard, and in an exciting game the Cougars won 5-3!

The boys head to Eston on March 10 for game one of the South Finals, then back home for game two.

Let’s show our support for this amazing bunch of players and pack the Carlyle Arena on March17 at 2:00. Wear your Cougar gear and cheer the Midgets to victory!

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark The residents of the Villa presented a Retirement Plaque to Lois Humenuik, who has retired after nine years on staff. She began as bath lady, and ended up as cook, as well as sharing the garden responsibilities with June Thompson. Her husband, Ed, became Nr, Fixit for the Villa. We wish them many happy healthy years with their garden and grandchildren.

Mary Thiessen brought her record player, and her collection of Wilf Carter records to Circle of Friends. We heard old favorites, like Strawberry Roan, and When the Work’s All Done This Fall from the days when we had only radio, (on batteries).

There were also the Gospel Hymns of George Beverley Shea; and we could sing along, and recite the 23rd Psalm from memory.

Dawn, the Mrs. Clean of the Villa, decided

that the glare in the courtyard needed attention.

So she planted tracks around the oval; polished off Rudolph’s nose, and the little train; and “made an angel” just outside our dining room window. The courtyard looks alive again.

Roy Bortolotto brought Communion, with Charlotte Kovach assisting. Visitors this week included: Allen Daku, John and Carolyn McMillan who had supper with Violet ; Trent and Judy Schmidt, Moosomin; Sherry Wilson, Janice Kalaman and Norma Wilson, Regina. Charlotte brought popcorn and a movie Friday night.

The Kliever family, from the Associated Gospel Church, led worship February 2nd. Gordon, Marilyn and John were joined by sister Judy Sahyes from the Pas. Bob Thiessen urged us to keep our mental eyes on Christ.

Alida Lions presentations Submitted On Feb. 28 District Governor Dennis Feduk of Carlyle met with members of the Alida Lions Club and some of their spouses at 361 Cafe for their supper meeting.

During the evening District Governor made four presentations to the following Lion members: Daryl Harrison received his 15-year pin; Norm and Desautels, Lloyd East and Jim Boettcher each recieved their 35-year pin.
