Living up to his father’s legacy Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Tom Lees was Vice President of the Canadian Western Agribition when he died in a farming accident in 1974, and this year his son Chris Lees was elected to President of the CWA. This story began in 1879 when members of the Lees family came to Saskatchewan from Scotland to survey the country and spent the winter on the site of what is now C&T Cattle Co. Five brothers emigrated in 1882 with Chris’ great grandfather bringing the family farm name Blair Athol with them. There are still direct descendants from three of those brothers farming and ranching in the Arcola area.

From Front page - Chris Lees Before the CWA began, purebred cattle were being shipped by train to Toronto for the Royal Winter Fair to showcase Saskatchewan cattle and farmers began to wonder why they were dedicating three weeks away from home instead of having people travel to them. Having been to the Royal and the Denver show in Colorado, the founding fathers, Tom Lees, Chris Sutter and Jim Lewthwaite began to look around for a suitable home for their new venture and the Regina Exhibition Grounds had the best facility to hold it at the time. Late November was decided upon, as it was after the Royal and before Denver. So, in November 1971, the first show was held. Cattle were initially stalled in barns on the grounds, but as livestock entries increased over the next few years, tents were set up to accommodate the rising numbers. In the last 48 years it has grown to encompass the Agribition Building, Queensbury Centre, Brandt Centre, the new International Trade Centre, Canada Centre East and West as well as five out of the six rinks in the Co-operators Centre.

Chris Lees first began attending Agribition in 1971, never missing one, whether he was showing his own polled Hereford cattle or custom fitting for others.

Fifteen years ago, he began volunteering. Nine years ago, he became a member of the Directors Board. Five years.ago he was elected to the executive board and two year ago became the Vice President. This April he was elected as President. It is a bittersweet time for him, achieving a position his father would likely have attained, if not for the accident that claimed his life. CWA directors board is made up of 16 elected directors, and four appointed directors: one from the Federal Government, one from the Provincial Government and two from the city of Regina. The Executive Board includes the Past President, three members at large, the Vice President and the President. In Lees’ time with the CWA he has served on various committees, as the Beef Chairman, Beef Breeds Chairman, Prospect Chairman (4-H club and jackpotting), the First Lady Classic and President’s Classic and the Chairman of Rodeo.

In May of 2015 Lees travelled on a trade mission to Rock Hampton Australia to promote Agribition as many Australians make the trek to Regina for the CWA. In 1971 Lees’ parents and first president of the CWA Chris Sutter traveled to the Royal Smithfield Club Cattle Show in England to promote Agribition and in 2019 CEO Chris Lane and Chris Lees will be travelling to Edinburgh, Scotland to attend the Royal Highland show to do the same thing.

2019 will see a change to Agribition, as they welcome the Canadian Maple Leaf Rodeo Finals. This is a new pro circuit rodeo final in Canada with the top 10 contestants in each of seven major rodeo events, competing for over $100,000 in prize money. The Party in the Dirt on the rodeo arena floor will return this year, and it would be a good idea to buy tickets for that early this year, since last year’s was sold out.

CWA is launching a mentorship Program this year partnering with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Federal Government to match up mentors with new up and coming agricultural leaders of the future.

The CWA Board is gearing up for 2020 when it will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary, which also coincides with the 2020 Grey Cup, the 110th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the 100th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce.

All four of these groups will be working alongside each other for these momentous occasions. Here are a few interesting facts about the CWA: 127,000 visitors over six days; 1,100 international visitors from over 75 different countries; 2,500 animals including cattle, horses, goats, alpacas, pigs, bison, sheep, rabbits, turkeys & chickens; 22,100 rodeo fans; 9,500 school kids registered for the CWA Education Program; 400 volunteers, $73.6 million in provincial economic impact; 52% male and 48% female visitors; 51 media companies represented on the grounds, 210 media reps accredited for the show and 380+ media mentions about Agribition in November; 16,702 Facebook fans with 3,213,519 impressions. 18% of visitors are first timers and that leaves a whopping 82% repeat visitors, with 35% up to age of 34; 39% ages 35-54 and 26% age 55 and up.

Wawota Wildlife Annual Awards & Fundraiser Submitted by Leanne Porter Wawota Wildlife Annual Awards and Fundraiser was held on Saturday, April 27th and we had a tremendous turn out of 180 people for our supper and evening. In keeping with the spirit of Wildlife, in addition to the beautifully cooked roast beef (by Dale Wilson), there was also Moose meatballs (donated by Morley and Joanne Hamilton), Elk sausage (donated by Wade and Leanne Porter), and Hasenphaeffer (Rabbit in red wine gravy).

Awards were handed out by President, Morley Hamilton to the winners within the membership.

A sincere apology To err is human, to forgive divine – Alexander Pope The error on the headline last week regarding the Cornerstone Theatre Play is entirely my own, and I offer my sincerest apologies. I would like to blame my excitement to write the accolades due to each and every person involved in the play, the possible titles running through my mind, and my underdeveloped typing skills, but the truth is I simply saw what I meant to type. I am deeply grateful for the grace extended by every member of Cornerstone Theatre Group. I was also remiss in mentioning the skilled directors Lane and Colleen Easton. It takes a strong team to know when to rein in the enthusiasm of the players and when to let them loose! The Trouble with Cats is a tribute to their hard work and dedication to the cast and crew.

Throughout the night there were various games to participate in at the chance of winning some tremendous prizes. For the ladies, you could purchase a card from a playing deck at the chance to win Hillberg & Berk earrings OR a diamond and pearl white gold pendant (donated by Pure Chem and Crystal Hills Farm).

There was a similar card raffle for the chance to win a gun of choice: J Manton & Co 12 gauge, or an Anschutz .22 Bolt action target Rifle, or a Kessler Arms 12 gauge, or a STEYR 6.5 x 55 Bolt action or a Browning .22 T Bolt—that’s a lot of choice for those that participated! MC and Fundraising Chair, Wade Porter said, “We wanted to try and make the evening special for the people who came out and let them feel that they were getting value and entertainment for their money. There are always lots of other events going on any given Saturday night and so we wanted to have items to make the evening memorable so that people will talk about it, spread a good word (hopefully!) and want to come back. The last event of the evening was a Ping Pong Raffle for a Remington 300 Winchester Mag Rifle where guests bid to purchase 1 of 10 ping pong balls and a winner was chosen by process of elimination.

It was an action packed evening and we can’t thank everyone enough who donated! In addition to some tremendous live auction items (sorry we can’t list them all, there is just too many!) we also had several business provide us with cash donations.

The money raised from this evening is going to go towards the purchase of a public fishing dock that will be installed at Kenosee Lake. We hope that this will be something that all ages of people living in this area-- and those visiting-- will be able to enjoy!

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Twice people called 911 by mistake and we had our share of false alarms.

We assisted EMS on a call that appeared serious until EMS and Members arrived. EMS did transport one individual to the hospital, however, it was not urgent in nature.

Members assisted Kisbey Fire Department at a grass fire on Highway 13. Those volunteer firefighters never get the appreciation they deserve.

A father and a son are not getting along.

Apparently the son has now threatened his father and we are now investigating. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I threatened my father when I was younger. I know it would not have been my father I would have been afraid of if I had. It would have been my mother.

Several intoxicated individuals began arguing at a residence. We did some math and subtracted two and lodged them thus solving the equation.

A child has chosen not to go with their parent as per a custodial court order. Keeping a child away from a parent is “dirty pool” Please take the high road, you know the one less travelled. Otherwise, we get involved and regardless whether we do something or don’t do something, we look like the “bad guy” An individual who is suffering from Mental Health and addiction issues is also breaching their release conditions.

Unfortunately it appears our legal system is left to deal with a situation that some other agency should be dealing with.

Allegations of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, assault, and unlawful confinement were investigated and one individual was arrested, however, we do not have the evidence or cooperation of the victim to proceed. Alcohol was a contributing factor in this event.

We are investigating allegations that individuals deliberately started a grass fire. Fortunately with the moisture we received we should not have the same issues where our Volunteer Fire Fighters were over tasked like last spring.

Members are investigating an assault involving a possible pedestrian versus vehicle, eggs and youth. It is not Halloween, however, this is the second egg file in as many weeks. It appears that it was all over a boy.

Not that it is relevant, but I like my eggs sunny side up.

We are investigating a Break and Enter to an abandoned farm yard. A home and shop were explored. It appears nothing was stolen.

An individual reported their ex had stolen their vehicle. We are still investigating, trying to determine ownership and whether a crime had actually been committed.

An intoxicated individual showed up at the Detachment crying. They were picked up by a friend and driven home.

Where is the Party?

We would like to know as well being someone stole from the liquor store. We may have missed the party but we have video of the suspect and description of the suspect vehicle. Patrols the following day on an unrelated matter resulted in locating the vehicle and subsequently arresting a suspect who denied any involvement. They were still charged being the video does not lie.

Over the last few years I have been amazed by how many times we identify an individual by the jewellery they wear, their tattoo or their piercing.

A neighbourhood dispute may result in charges of uttering threats if one individual is not careful. A warning is all the accused will get

this time, however, the future is in their hands.

911 is a great tool, however, if you choose to be a “tool” and call, ask for help and hang up . . . well, we need some info. Members did attend to the residence associated to the number and found several intoxicated individuals.

One individual insisted we remove another individual which was very difficult for us to do, being, they were not there.

We did act as a “Buffalo Cab” and drove one person to another residence which seemed to resolve things somewhat.

An intoxicated individual vacated a residence once they found out the RCMP were called. We did make patrols for the intoxicated individual, however, did not locate them.

Another intoxicated individual that found themselves unwanted due to their behaviour found themselves lodged for an evening.

We had several calls of an intoxicated individual in the ditch waving their ball cap.

A patrol was made and with some difficulty our Member walked them up the bank of the ditch.

An effort to bring the individual home was met with a quick “Nay, Nay” and they were therefore lodged until later that evening.

Members patrolled for a reported impaired driver, however, we did not locate the suspected vehicle and passed the information on to a neighbouring Detachment.

Members were advised of an erratic driver all over the road, however, we were not in a position to locate the vehicle and passed this on to a neighbouring Detachment.

Approximately 15 tickets were issued and approximately 15 written warnings were issued during the last week.

Tickets were issued for drive without a licence -$150, fail to provide registration certificate - $100, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, operate unregistered motor vehicle - $580, and we had two expensive speeding tickets, one for $570 and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $1000.

This $1000 speeding ticket was a true Canadian story. Four individuals and a dog, (a lap dog at best) travelling to BC for work from out east. Only one had a valid licence and this individual was tired and in a rush to make it to the next place they planned on stopping. We could have seized the vehicle, however, chose to use discretion, more so being we did not want them stuck in our part of the Province. Our one Member struggled with his broken French until the one passenger realized his English was better than our Member’s French., As friendly as this individual was they sure had a nasty history with the Police. We

could have charged this individual for failing to comply with their release conditions, however, chose to use discretion again being they were not from Saskatchewan and would likely never come back. To bring it all to a successful conclusion we had to give them a jump start to get their vehicle moving again. I would like to say we followed them to the edge of our Detachment area, but we didn’t. We did notify our colleagues further west though.

We also called the Po-

lice Service that had the one individual on conditions and gave them an update as to where they were headed. They were glad they were no longer in their area of responsibility, as were we. All and all a good morning.

Warnings were issued for cell phone use, fail to wear a seatbelt, speeding, inadequate headlamps and fail to produce drivers licence.

Inspection notices were issued for brake light, damaged windshield, inadequate headlights and window tint.

A decade or so ago, it was the BSE crisis. This was far, far more about American cattlemen wanting a leg up on their Canadian competition than any serious dangers posed by extremely isolated cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy that our food security system caught, anyway.

Well, fast forward a decade and it’s now all about the Chinese offering up bogus concerns over Canadian canola. Again, this likely has nothing to do with the quality of the product and everything to do with politics.

It all sounds similar to the BSE crisis with perhaps one big difference.

Dealing with the protectionist Republican George W. Bush government of the day will was a picnic compared with dealing with the irrational and unreachable Chinese administration.

Sure, Premier Scott Moe and his predecessors like Brad Wall, Lorne Calvert, Roy Romanow and Grant Devine have all made trips to China to solidify relationships with Saskatchewan’s and Canada’s second-biggest trading partner after the U.S. But it all matters naught if the upper echelon of the China’s communist government decides to act in a punitive way towards a country that did something to displease the regime.

And let us again stress that this is far more about the arrest and detention of the Huawei executive in Vancouver last December than it is about dthe quality of Canadian canola.

At the behest of the United States, the federal Liberal government was simply following international protocol on extradition agreements. For all the legitimate reasons to be annoyed at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration, it’s doubtful any Canadian government would have handled the situation any differently.

Unfortunately, that still leaves Saskatchewan agriculture at the mercy of the whims of a large importer.

Of the 20.3 million tonnes of canola that Canada grew in 2018, 10.9 million tonnes came from Saskatchewan.

About 40 per cent of that canola is exported to China that purchases about 60 per cent of all canola imports in the world.

That China is now barring Canadian canola is a very big deal. The only question right now is: What’s the best way to handle this situation?

One gets Premier Scott Moe’s sincere frustration and sincere desire to want to do something.

“We are a month now with no identifiable movement with respect to this trade relationship,” Moe told reporters at the Saskatchewan legislature last week. “We need to engage and we need to ensure that we are able to get our trading partner’s attention.”

But then the Saskatchewan Premier talked about exactly reciprocal with respect to the inspection criteria that our products are undergoing”. Moe didn’t go into details as to what he was suggesting, but the simple fact of the matter is that we don’t have many retaliatory measures to make.

For as good as sabre rattling may sound to many frustrated farmers, politicians have to careful as to what they say and do when it comes to dealing with China.

For example, Canada is just not a big importer of Chinese food. In 2017, China only exported $464 million worth of food to Canada, China’s 14th federal food customer.

We do run massive trade deficits with China, $49 billion in each of the last two years.

But is Moe and his Sask. Party government as willing to see retaliatory measures on clothing, dry goods and electronics?

Is this government willing to curtail its interest in promoting carbon capture and in China? What about relations with the Yancoal potash mine?

And then there’re is SaskTel’s decade-long relationship with Huawei in which the Crown telephone utility has done $164-million worth of business since 2010.

Trade relations are messy and there’s only so much a provincial premier can do to address the mess.

A most unexpected friendship At the age of 25 we have more friends than at any other time in our life, so says those who study such things. Research indicates people at that age are still connected to high school friends, have made college friends, and are now adding work colleagues to that list.

Then things change.

Moving, careers, marShelley Luedtke riage and parenthood all impact how many of those friends we bring along with us since these transitions affect the amount of time we have for them. As that time becomes more limited we tend to invest more deeply…but in fewer…friendships. It then becomes more difficult to make new ones But sometimes there are surprises. Unexpected…but oh, such sweet surprises.

I was never very comfortable around older people; particularly those living in nursing homes. My father was a pastor so his work took him into these care homes regularly for visits and to lead church services. Growing up he would often ask me to go along and accompany hymns that would be part of the service. I went— not because I wanted to, but because he asked.

My mother was a nurse who spent much of her career working in nursing homes. When I was still living at home she was asked to pilot a dementia project in the city where we were living. She asked me to come and play the piano a couple of times during the project. I went—not because I wanted to, but because she asked.

So imagine the surprise I gave myself when I started visiting someone in a nursing home.

It followed a conversation with an activity director who shared the challenge of trying to plan group activities while also wishing there was more time for one-on-one conversation.

She mentioned a woman named Marie, and how much she would appreciate if someone could come and read Scripture to her.

I sat on that for a couple of months until a separate conversation with a good friend who

has connections to long term care and was looking for ways to increase interaction between members of the community and those living in the care center. Okay, it was time.

I remember so clearly the evening I went to visit Marie for the first time. I didn’t know where her room was. She wouldn’t know who I was.

How was this supposed to come together? As I drove over in the rain that night I remember saying, “God, you are going to have to help me with this.”

I walked in and just through the doors in the dining room was a nurse I knew, and one I hadn’t seen in quite some time. We briefly got reacquainted and then talked about why I was there that evening. She took me right to Marie’s room, introduced me and asked if she would like to have someone come visit and spend time reading the Bible. Marie smiled and said how nice that would be.

And so began a weekly get together. We would read and we would visit. I learned about her life as a young girl, her family, her travels, her garden and her love of flowers. She learned about my family and would often ask about them. We talked about raising children, the church, any special activities that had taken place during the day, and she always asked how the roads were.

At the end of each visit she would thank me for coming—which wasn’t necessary. I was blessed far more than I deserved by her time, her interest, her dedication to Scripture reading, and by the hands that held mine when we prayed together. It was not a volunteer role--it was a friendship. So unexpected, but so precious to me.

Marie passed away last week. She was 97. I am going to miss our time together so much, but I am so thankful she was open to starting a new friendship and sharing her heart with me.

It might be easiest making new friends before we’re 25 but some of the most meaningful ones may very well come later. And they just might come as extraordinary surprises.

That’s my outlook.

Joint applicants may be able to withdraw $35,000* each. Alternatively, fund the purchase with a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) withdrawal without any dollar limits or tax issues and keeping the RRSP intact.

• Know about tax cred-

its – the First-time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit is available to first time home buyers of a qualifying home and doesn’t affect eligibility for an existing RRSP Home Buyers’ Plan.

Cat throw up: when it’s normal and when to worry

Most cat owners deal with their pet vomiting at some point, but it’s not always clear whether or not the messy mishap is cause for concern. Here’s what you should know about cat throw up, and how to identify when it’s a problem.

Hairball regurgitation Felines spend hours a day grooming themselves with their sandpaper-like tongues, which causes them to ingest a small amount of hair. Generally their digestive system allows the hair to pass without trouble, but sometimes hair collects in

the stomach and creates a mass. When this happens, your cat will get rid of it by vomiting. This is completely normal and not a cause for worry.

Other types of vomiting Cats may also throw up for a variety of other reasons that have nothing to do with hairballs. Vomiting may be due to eating too fast or caused by a delay in their regular feeding schedule. The type of food consumed may also be the cause.

If your feline vomits more than once or twice a

month, it may be cause for concern. Other signs that there may be trouble include blood in the vomit, pale or yellow gums, fever or a swollen abdomen. If you think your cat has eaten something poisonous, take them to see a vet right away.

While your cat’s vomiting may be nothing to worry about, it’s important to keep an eye on the issue.

Be sure to observe your kitty carefully, and consult with a vet if you notice an increase in vomiting or a decline in their health.

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Arcola’s Ryan Folk recently returned from Melbourne, Australia where he was representing Canada in the Australian World Skills Competition. There he placed 6th out of 10 competitors, including his fellow competitor representing Canada.

The other countries involved were Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Russia, India, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Ryan Folk placed 6th at the World Skills Competition held in Australia. (Archive photo) Folk said that what he saw of Melbourne was beautiful but most of his trip was practical work, getting used to the Australian materials. Representing Canada was a feeling he said was difficult to explain, but definitely an honour. Placing 6th was a nice shock, as there were a lot of things to figure out on the fly in such a short period of time. The 7th to 10th place competitors were unable to power up their projects, either due to incomplete projects or the project not meeting code. While Folk didn’t have to worry about language barriers in the competition, and the others

had their own translators, it definitely was a barrier to getting to know the other competitors.

Folk will be flying off to Nova Scotia near the end of May in his bid to earn a place in the Worlds. Despite beating his fellow Canadian in Australia, Folk said he expects it to be a tight competition, due to the excellent skills his competitor possesses. Should Folks win in Nova Scotia, there will only be a couple of weeks to prepare for the Worlds, so he continues to practice using materials and wire donated to him by his sponsors Choice Electric and EECOL Electric from Regina. was happy to find that her boys had milked the cows and separated the milk before she got home from quilting.

Mary Thiessen told of a dramatic true movie in which the Coast Guard saved the crew of a tanker which had broken in half. The searchlights found all of the survivors. Clifford told of a teacher who boarded with his family and gave him much help and encouragement.

Carlyle Town Council met on Wednesday May 1, where they received and approved the Confirmed Education

Property Tax Mill Rates.

This means property taxes will be out in the next few weeks. $17,284 was the Sask Lotteries Grant Allocation for this year and Council has allocated

these funds to Cornerstone Family & Youth, Carlyle Fun Dayz, Carlyle Library, Moose Mountain Jumpers, Rusty Relics Museum, and the Carlyle & District Leisure Complex.

Gordon F. Kells High School Old Time Dance at GFK Karrnnel Sawitsky, a Juno award winning artist from Toronto, Canada, was at GFK along with Michele Amy (Forget, Sk. - fiddle), Pierre Tenant (Belgarde, Sk. -guitar) and Liane Porier (Antler, Mb. - piano). They were joined by a couple students who have been involved in fiddle for several years (Micah Walbaum –Forget, Sk. And Morgan Robertson – Carlyle, Sk.) They came to inspire kids by teaching them about how important music is and how to dance to old

time dances such as the Sasha and the Virginia Reel. They were also promoting a local music camp that happens at Kenosee lake every year called Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party.

There is a School Glow Dance Friday, May 10th from 8 to 12.

Senior badminton season is in the books for 2019. The team traveled to Estevan and Oxbow for tournaments and hosted the pre-district qualifier. Two athletes qualified for districts and represented GFK well. Great season athletes.

The week before Easter guests with Ben and Marcelle Peterson were son, Bob and Deana Peterson and boys (Weyburn). Easter Sunday, April 21 supper guests were daughter Michelle and Reg Needham (Oxbow), Scott Needham (Oxbow) and his friend Mackenzie (Gainsborough), Miles Needham and his friend Mikayla as well as her daughter Paige (all of Lampman), daughter Joanne and Brad Longphee and family Carson, Paige, Nicole and her friend Mitch (Redvers).

On Easter Monday, April 22 Marcelle Peterson and Lorraine George (Bellegard) accompanied Leon and Lorraine Magotiaux (Redvers) to attend a cousin’s funeral in Winnipeg.

Gail McLachlin spent six days during Spring Break holidaying in Florence, Italy with her mother June McLachlin (Cabri, SK) and daughter Grace McKenna (Calgary). A highlight of their trip was seeing Michael Angelo’s “David”.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Larry and Sharon Jensen and family on the passing of his father Alfred (Alfie) at the age of 90 years, at Redvers Health Centre Long Term Care on April 28, 2019. Sincere sympathy is extended to Edgar and Shirley Bendtsen on the death of her father Reg Taylor of Ogema on April 27 at the age 96 years. Condolences are also extended to his grandchildren Steven and Lesa Bendtsen, Todd and LaurieAnne Bendtsen (Weyburn), Lloyd and Tara Bendtsen (Carlyle) and their families as well as the Taylor family members.

Funeral service was held May 2 at Ogema.

Some of the dancers that are from Alida were Sadie Potapinski, Ainsley Cowan, Kaycee and Harper Demas, as well as Kaleen Lemieux and Elsie McIntyre who have grandparents at Alida. A job “well done” by all the dance students and kudos to their instructors. Hope to be back again next year.

Kelsey Rydberg (Estevan), Lace Nilsen and her friend Blaze (White Bear) attended the dance recital on Sunday to watch their sister Ainsley Cowan perform her dances. Tim Cowan and Edel Cowan also attended the recital.

I do believe that the Southern “Snowbirds” have now all returned back to their respected homes – Great to see you all back safe and sound, and no worse for the wear – Looking great. Now hope you enjoy your summer days.

It is with heavy hearts that the family wishes to announce that Alfred Christian Jensen drew his final breath at the Redvers Health Centre – Long Term Care on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the age of 90 years.

Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Frands and May Jensen; wife Yvonne (nee Dubuc); brother Charlie Jensen; and sisters, Jeanette Laval, Evelyn Dubuc and Dolly (Francis) Levielle.

Alfred’s memory will be forever cherished by his children Larry (Sharon) and Doreen (Blaine); grandchildren Carrie, Jenna, Corey and Lyndsey; great grandchildren Kirsonna and Rayden; and great great grandchildren Joehannah, Charlie and Kenny. Alfred will also be missed by his sister Dorothy Girard and extended family and friends.

In following Alfred’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Private Family Graveside service will be held at the Dannevirke Cemetery, Redvers, SK at a later date.

Those so wishing may make donations in memory of Alfred to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan, 200-4545 Parliament Avenue, Regina, SK S4W 0G3.

Carievale 4-H Beef Club news On February 25, 2019 the Carievale 4-H Beef Club held their monthly meeting. The pledge was recited and roll call was made.

Old Business Crescent Point donated $500 to the club and the Farm Credit Corporation (FCC) donated $500 for club t-shirts. Kamryn Gilliland placed 3rd in the Regional Record Book Competition while Jorden Cowan placed 1st.

Jorden Cowan record book went on to provincials. District 4-H Public Speaking was on feb, 9th Marisol Gilliland, Mya Gilliland, and Ryan Cowan attended. Club t-shits were ordered from Prairie Winds, and the Carievale 4-H Beef Club held their 4-H winter party at the Carievale Skating Rink.

New Business The Carievale 4-H Beef Club will be cleaning after the Gainsborough Black Gold Rodeo.

The District Meeting was held in Redvers Tereasa Cowan attended. The Yorkton Steer and Heifer Show is on March 2527. District 4-H Bowling is on April 20th, 2019.

CODE (nee Kennedy), Alice Gertrude - On Friday, April 12, 2019, in Victoria, BC in her 92nd year. Alice is loved always by her family, her beloved husband of 52 years, the late Arthur Warren Code (1997), her children, Faye, Ron, Jean, Barbara, Bill, Stewart (deceased) and David, her son-in-law, Bill, and daughters-in-law, Denise, Darlene and Karen, her grandchildren Adam, Kevin, Warren, Joe, Patrick, Brian, Katherine, Laura, Joshua and Rachel, her eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by her sister, Lyle, and her half-sisters, Frances and Phyllis.

Alice was born April 23, 1926, the youngest daughter of Ernest and Alice Kennedy, in Wilkie, SK. After completing grade 12 high school in Saskatoon, she attended Normal (Teacher’s College) there, graduating with her diploma in 1943 at the age of 17. She taught full time until her marriage in July, 1945, and was a substitute teacher from time to time in later years.

Alice and Warren farmed at Phippen, SK until 1958. Then they moved to Antler, SK, where they raised their family and had a mixed farm, including a very large vegetable garden, until their retirement to Calgary in 1983. They spent winters in Mesa, AZ and summers in Calgary until 1995, when they moved to Duncan, BC. She was always active in the church and community, serving on the board of the Antler-Redvers United Church, and a member of Antler U.C.W. (United Church Women), Antler Ladies Guild, the Sinclair Legion Auxiliary and the Eastern Star. She was honoured as “Mother of the Year” by the U.C.W. in 1962. She was also an avid curler and volunteer at Antler Bonspiels.

Alice loved to read and instilled that love in each of her children. Music was another passion, and although she never had the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument, she insisted that each of her children learn to play at least one instrument, or to sing, or both. She was president of Redvers Music Festival Association for five years, and attended festivals through-out the province, often accompanied by Stewart, who was participating in them.

She was fascinated by genealogy, meticulously tracking both sides of the family’s history. She had a keen sense of style and colour, which contributed to her prowess in sewing and knitting. She loved to do both. She could knit a Cowichan sweater and watch TV without dropping a stitch. She was often at her sewing machine into the wee small hours after everyone was in bed. She and Warren were top-notch cribbage players and proudly received recognition letters from Gordon Sinclair of Front Page Challenge, a national TV program at the time. Also, they enjoyed regularly hosting friends for an evening of cards.

Hardworking, fiercely proud and independent, Alice loved her family first and foremost. The last remaining matriarch of her generation, on both sides of the family, she was respected, loved and admired by all who knew her.

Cremation has taken place. A service was held for the family on April 28, 2019 at Adanac Cemetery, SK. Memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Cards/notes may be sent to: F. Riches, Box 2192, Invermere, BC V0A 1K0.

SJ who spent several weeks in Taiwan visiting family and renewing acquaintances has returned home to Wawota.

carry the costs of a purely politically motivated trade barrier?

Reaction to the announcement has not exactly been glowing.

“The China decision to block canola has had a major impact on grain farmers with no end in sight. Farmers don’t want tax dollars in the form of interest free loans, we want to be able to grow our grains and export them without political interference,” said Gunter Jochum, President of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers (WCWG), in a release.

The WCWG release noted; farmers are used to managing risk associ-

ated with factors that are outside of their control such as weather. Factors such as trade markets and political interference should be within our government’s control.

The new program sounds impressive with a maximum advance of $1 million but the WCWG’s note to be “eligible for $1 million advance on canola where $500,000 is interest free, you have to produce approximately 200,000 bushels of canola. In order to qualify for the maximum, you need 5,263 acres at 38 bushels per acre, which is roughly a 16,000 acre farm.”

Municipalities also noted the help is purely a loan.

“Farmers will be expected to repay dollars borrowed through the Advanced Payment program, since it is a loan and to be clear it is a temporary solution,” stated Ray Orb, President of SARM in a release.

“While this announcement is a step in the right direction, it still does not address the problem with China,” explained Orb. “We are frustrated and will continue to push for a diplomatic resolution to the problem. Canada needs an ambassador to China and Ministers Bibeau, Carr and Freeland also need to be more involved.”

Nearly half (40 per cent) of canola and canola products produced in Canada go to China. Saskatchewan is the largest exporter of canola in Canada and globally.

As SARM noted, access to the world market is critical to the success of the agriculture industry and the provincial and national economies.

The loan announced by the feds is at best a stop gap measure. While trade diversification minister Jim Carr also announced efforts to expand exports to other Asian markets, the real solution is getting to the table with China and finding an equitable solution to what is essentially a temper tantrum at the highest levels of the Chinese government.
