There’s a first time for everything

Swinging into golf season

For golf lovers, spring is synonymous with swing.

As soon as the snow has melted, they’re reaching for their clubs. However, before teeing off, golfers need to get back their groove. Prior to heading onto the links this season, make sure you properly stretch, check your equipment and get some practice in.

Pre-season stretching and exercise Most people become less active during winter. Any return to athletic activity after a lull needs to be done gradually and should involve stretching.

Even if you were active last winter, stretching remains imperative: given that your muscles haven’t executed the speci�ic mo-

tions involved in the golf swing for months, they can injure easily if not properly stretched.

The most important areas to stretch are the wrists, fore¬arms, triceps, shoulders, neck, lower back, glutes and hamstrings.

As for pre-season exercise, Golf Digest stresses the importance of strengthening your glutes.

These large muscles not only stabilize your golf posture but also protect the lumbar spine from the stress involved in swinging a golf club repetitively. Some exercises that help train your glutes are squats, glute bridges and deadlifts.

Getting your gear ready Golf might well involve

more equipment than any other sport. Before starting your season, you’ll want to make sure your gear is up to snuff. Inspect your clubs, grips, shoes and the individual cleats on your shoes to make sure everything is course-ready.

Additionally, ensure you have what you need in the way of golf apparel.

If you’re looking to hit the links straightaway, make sure you have clothing designed for nippy spring weather.

Finally, make certain your golf bag is well stocked. That means balls, tees, markers, an emergency kit and the rest.

Southeast Search and Rescue invites volunteers for chapter meeting

By Anastasiia Bykhovskaia/Estevan Mercury The Southeast Saskatchewan Search and Rescue (SESK SAR) Chapter 19 is all set and ready to work. It is holding its �irst chapter meeting on May 16 at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Hall in Carlyle.

All volunteers who signed up or are willing to join the SESK SAR are invited to come to the meeting. A lot of work has been done since the original information sessions in January.

“We’ll start out with everything that’s transpired and the documentation and paperwork that’s been developed since our January meeting,” said special constable with the Estevan Police Service, Katia Bigney, who was one of the main initiators of the establishment of the southeast chapter.

Bigney is asking volunteers to mail their completed application packages along with the criminal record checks including vulnerable sector and $25 membership fees (cheques or money orders) to the Southeast Saskatchewan Search and Rescue Chapter, box 603, Estevan, SK, S4A 2A2 as soon as possible.

If letters can’t be sent in a timely manner, then participants can bring them to the meeting along with a piece of a government-issued ID. Another vital thing to think about prior to the meeting is nominations for chapter executives, including the president, two vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer, and three directors.

“I want people to have it decided in their minds prior to the meeting, if they are willing to stand to be nominated to any of those positions and hopefully be there in person for that,” said Bigney.

Those, who will be mailing their packages, are asked to add a note if they would let their names stand for nominations as an executive and/or director, so voting and decisions could take place at the �irst meeting. Only those who will be at the meeting and who will have all their documents submitted will be allowed to vote on executives and directors.

Besides, volunteers are asked to consider if they are willing to play an active role in one of the six committees, including training, recruitment/membership, adventure smart, fundraising/sponsorship, equipment, and community relations (including organizing events, media releases, website and social media). No nomination will be needed to become a member of one or more of these committees.

“We want one person from each of the major communities to be on each of those committees.

And we want those groups to work together. So, for example, training committee will have someone from Estevan, Weyburn, Carnduff, Carlyle and potentially Whitewood and Moosomin area (which is willing to join SESK SAR) have one person on this committee also. That group will work together to develop the training modules. The same will apply for the other �ive committees as well,” explained Bigney.

There can be more than one person from each location on the committee. Those who can’t make it to the �irst meeting can indicate their willingness to join particular groups via email or mail.

The committees are planned to become the engine that will run the SESK SAR chapter.

“Those people are so critically important,” added Bigney.

A special constable with the Estevan Police Service, Katia Bigney, is organizing the first Southeast Saskatchewan Search and Rescue Chapter’s meeting. teers. And the SESK SAR chapter will have all of them from the very �irst days of its existence.

“We’ll talk about the (Algoma) insurance that we’ll let our cover for all of our volunteers (at training and active search). And we’ll talk about the $3,000 tax credit for all professional emergency services, which is what we are classi�ied as,” said Bigney.

To receive the tax credit in the 2020 tax year, SESK SAR volunteers will have to log 200 hours. It will be the responsibility of the training committee to �ind a way to register the hours.

Additional information on bene�its will be provided at the meeting.

Bigney also noted that anyone willing to go through the 40 hours of ground search training is required to have their valid CPR and �irst aid training certi�icates in place. People, who meet all requirements, will be the �irst to start training, which is slated to take off in June.

Prior to the chapter meeting, on May 14, the Western Financial Group’s staff is running a steak fundraiser for SESK SAR at Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse Casual.

Maple-glazed barbecue ribs What’s the secret behind these succulent and tender ribs? Using two cooking methods and a delicious homemade barbecue sauce.

Start to �inish: 10 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 4 Ingredients:

Barbecue sauce • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine • 1/2 onion, diced • 1 cup chili sauce • 1/2 cup water • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 tablespoons maple syrup • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon garlic salt • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard • 1 teaspoon fancy molasses

Ribs • 2 racks baby back ribs (about 750 grams each) • 2 tablespoons onion powder • 2 tablespoons paprika • 1 tablespoon salt • 1 tablespoon pepper

Directions: Barbecue sauce 1. In a small pot, cook the onion in the butter over medium heat until soft.

2. Add the remaining sauce ingredients and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring often. Set aside.

Ribs 1. Cut each rack in half. In a bowl, combine the remaining ingredients and rub the resulting mixture evenly over the ribs.

2. Cook the ribs in the slow cooker on high for 30 minutes. Switch to low for another 6 to 8 hours. The ribs will be very tender after cooking, so remove them carefully to keep them in one

piece.

3. Preheat the barbecue to medium heat.

4. Brush the ribs with the barbecue sauce, and grill for 4 to 5 minutes a side, brushing on more sauce as desired, and serve.

While many people insist that removing the membrane is necessary, keep it on for this recipe.

It’ll prevent the racks from falling apart in the slow cooker.
