Flamingo flamboyance arrives in Carlyle

Yards in Carlyle are experiencing a new phenomenon lately and it all due to Choose Life Ministry. The flamingoes are part of a fundraiser, and for a $25 donation you can send the birds to anyone within Carlyle, Manor or Redvers areas. The money will be used to support the Homestead of Hope where young women can find freedom from life-altering challenges including substance abuse, mental illness such as depression and anxiety, unexpected pregnancy, the effects of physical and/or sexual abuse and challenges such as eating disorders and self-harm behaviors.

Which camping experience is right for you?

Whether you’d rather battle the elements or preserve your comfort, there’s a camping experience that’s right for you. Here are some of the different ways you can get close to nature this summer.

Backpacking Are you an experienced camper who wants to venture deep into the wilderness? Then backpacking may be right for you. This type of camping involves carrying all your gear on your back and hiking to one or more remote campsites. Sleep at the base of a mountain, at the edge of a stream, on the shore of a lake or anywhere else your feet may take you.

Tent camping Tent camping can include all the comforts of home but if you’re looking to rough it, you can forgo the excess gear. How far away from civilization you go is also entirely up to you, with thousands of campgrounds across the country to choose from. The amenities available at each campground differ but many are equipped with showers, laundry facilities, potable water and electric outlets.

RV camping RV camping is more comfortable than tent camping. It’s especially practical if you want to live in the wilderness for an extended period or if you want to visit a number of different parks. There are RVs for every budget, from small folding camping trailers to luxury motorhomes. If buying isn’t an option, it’s also possible to rent RVs. Cabin camping Cabin camping is perfect if you’re looking for a home away from home nestled in the wilderness.

There are many types of cabins that can be rented, all the way from modest shacks to luxurious cottages.

Undoubtedly, at a certain point a camper becomes a cottager, but you can decide for yourself where that line falls.

No matter what type of camper you are, remember to always let someone know where you’re going and when they can expect you back. Happy camping!

6 tips for safe cycling

The 200th anniversary of the velocipede: a precursor of the modern bicycle

Biking on city streets presents dangers to cyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike. To ensure everyone’s safety, here are six guidelines bicyclists should follow.

1. Wear a helmet In the event of an accident, wearing a helmet greatly reduces your chances of suffering a serious head injury. Make sure that your helmet fits well and that the straps sit snugly against the sides of your face and under your chin. Also, be sure to choose a helmet manufactured according to strict safety standards (look for a sticker from a safety standards organization such as Snell, ANSI, ASTM, BSI, SAA or CPSC).

2. Inspect your bicycle A well-performing and properly maintained bike is safer than one that’s run down and needs work.

Regularly check the following before hitting the road: • Tire pressure • The condition of the spokes • The alignment of the wheels and the forks • The tautness of the chain • The functioning of the brakes.

Only ride bikes that are the appropriate size. Ensure that the seat and handlebars are set at the right height.

3. Make yourself visible If you cycle at night or when visibility is limited, make sure your bike is equipped with a white front light, a red rear light or reflector, white reflective tape on the front forks and red reflective tape on the rear forks.

As an extra precaution, consider wearing reflective clothing and equipping your bike with vertical and horizontal safety flags.

4. Make yourself heard Bikes are extremely quiet, so it’s important to always announce your presence to other cyclists and pedestrians. Use a bell, horn or your voice to indicate that you’re passing or approaching.

5. Communicate your intentions Know the hand signals for turning and stopping and always use them when changing lanes, making a turn or coming to a stop. This is for the benefit of motorists and other cyclists. Moreover, make sure to do a shoulder check before signalling and another one just before turning.

6. Remain alert Distracted cycling is as dangerous as distracted driving. Don’t ever text or talk on the phone while riding your bike. And avoid wearing earphones as it’s important that you hear what’s happening around you.

By following these recommendations and abiding by the local traffic laws, you’ll reduce the risks involved in cycling.

The machine Clarkson patented was very different from our modern bicycles and even went by a different name: the velocipede.

The so-called “swift walker” was made of wood and could be propelled by pushing off the ground with one’s feet.

This early forerunner of the bicycle made its way to America via Europe, where it had been conceived two years earlier by the German inventor Karl von Drais.

While the velocipede ended up being a fad, it served as the prototype for the modern bicycle, which emerged — with pedals, chain drive and all — in the 1880s.

On the 200th birthday of its patenting in North America, we celebrate the velocipede for setting the wheels in motion in bringing us the bicycle.

Marinated barbecue salmon This simple recipe is perfect anytime it’s too hot to cook inside. The marinade caramelizes perfectly on the salmon and you’ll want to make this delicious dish again and again.

Start to �inish: 1 hour, 15 minutes (15 minutes active) Servings: 4 Ingredients • 1/4 cup olive oil • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 1 garlic clove, minced • Salt and pepper to taste • 4 125-gram salmon �ilets, skin on • Parsley and lemon wedges

Directions 1. Mix all of the ingredients — except the salmon, parsley and lemon wedges — in a bowl.

2. Place the salmon �ilets in a large freezer bag and pour half of the marinade in. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible and marinate in the fridge for 1 to 3 hours.

3. Preheat the barbecue. Oil the grill using a silicone brush.

4. Put the salmon �ilets directly on the grill, skin side up. Close the barbecue cover and let cook for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the thickness of the �ilets.

5. Flip the �ilets, and brush the remaining marinade on the �ish. Close the barbecue lid and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes.

6. Place the �ilets on a plate, cover with aluminum foil and let rest for about 5 minutes.

7. Garnish with parsley and lemon wedges, and serve with a green salad.
