One a day

By Linda Wegner One of the things I recall from years past is an advertising ditty that went like this: “A [something] a day keeps the doctor away”. I don’t recall what that something was but the lilt and the rhyme have continued, prompting these thoughts about influence.

If you’re like me you’ve sometimes pondered the influence of people who have swayed the politics, policies or population of countries locally, nationally and sometimes, globally. “How do they do it?”, we ask. “What’s the secret of garnering so much attention?”. Like you, I’m sure, there are those whom I admire greatly and others, well let’s just say the opposite is closer to the truth.

Being born into certain families or income classes certainly plays a role for some. For others, breakthroughs in science, education or entertainment ensure fame and often, fortune. For some, acts of heroism or bravery rightfully endorse them as worthy of praise. I’ve been thinking a lot about this, especially in light of the impossibility of my ever achieving world-wide recognition (not that I’ve ever wanted to!).

Here are my thoughts, based on a lovely phone call I received today: it just takes one daily act of kindness to lift the spirits of someone. Over the past three decades I’ve determined to encourage, cheer, reassure or even, on occasion, to have emboldened at least one person every day. I know by experience know how much those things have blessed me as much as they did the recipient.

“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

I Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT) “Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.” Ephesians 4:29 (The Message) Who can you encourage today?

(Aah, I remember, it’s “an apple a day.”)

Obituaries Albert Marcel Germain 1946 - 2019

Albert Germain, late of Redvers, Sask. passed away at the Redvers Health Centre on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the age of 72 years.

Albert was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Noella Germain and his brother Denis Germain.

Albert is survived by his children, Ed (Shelley) Germain, Darcy Germain and Robby (Amanda) Germain and their mother Christine Germain; grandchildren, Jennifer, Jesse, Cassie, Braeden, Ethan and Kennedy. Fond memories will remain forever with Albert’s siblings, Linda (Dale) Potapinski, Ron Germain, Terry (Laura) Germain and Rita Germain; as well as numerous nephews and extended family.

A Private Family Graveside service will take place at St. Raphael Parish Cemetery, Cantal, Sask. at a later date.

Those so wishing, may make donations to the Redvers & District Community Health Foundation Inc., Box 766, Redvers, SK, S0C 2H0 in memory of Albert.

Florence Gervais November 6, 1935 - February 28, 2019 Florence Gervais of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Emile Gervais, passed away on Friday, March 15th, 2019, at the age of 83 years. Florence leaves to cherish her memory her children, Laird (Jan) Gervais of Crystal Lake, SK, Joanne (Neil) Forer of Melfort, SK, Glendora (Blaine) Tenborg of Calgary, AB, Kurt Gervais of Calgary, and Trevor Gervais (Louise) of Medicine Hat; her 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Florence was predeceased by her parents, Aimé and Maria Leclerc; sister, Beatrice (Rene) Martel; and Maurice Leclerc.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 4th, 2019, at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, #1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta at 1:00 p.m. with Gary W. Goran Officiant. Interment to follow at Saamis Prairieview Cemetery.
