Chase the Ace winner makes the cut for over $8,000

Jenna Brady’s ticket was the fifth one drawn at the final Chase the Ace on Oct. 27 and it must have been her lucky number, as she cut the much sought after Ace of Spades, which was worth a whopping $8,653.00! A very excited Brady shared her story of how earlier that week she had been out walking her dog and found a twenty dollar bill. She thought to herself she’d keep the money and buy herself Chase The Ace tickets. And it paid off big time! Steve Sharpen was the ticket holder for the first number drawn. He didn’t cut the Ace of Spades but still managed to walk away with $1,392. Sharpen was cutting the deck on behalf of Todd Thompson, who then donated $500 of his winnings to the school for the playground fund. Thank you Todd!

It was a packed house for the final evening for Carlyle’s Chase The Ace on Saturday, Oct. 27. Moms on a Community Mission member Nicole Currie said, ”It was really good. Our best crowd for Chase the Ace,” said Nicole Currie. “The support from the community has been great to have. To help kids be active through Kidsport whether it be on the playground or at any sport activity is so worthwhile. It is also great we were able to help provide some funds to the rink.”

Volleyball The Grade 8/9 Junior Girls’ Volleyball Team played in their first tournament of the season last Saturday in Moosomin. The girls played amazingly, winning every set and ultimately, the entire tournament.

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Well I missed another weekly report. This time I was away training on the use of the RCMP Carbine. Long days outside in the wind, however, the weather was much nicer than the weekend before when the Cross Country Team ran in Delisle.

There are only 2 members that still require training on the Carbine. Once that is complete they get to join the rest of us and re-qualify each year. We also have to requalify annually on the rifle, pistol, shotgun and CEW. (Taser) This is a minimum of three days a year, not including travel time if required. We must also go to Regina for a week of what refer to as “Block Training” every three years.

Now when you add this “Mandatory” Training to all the other training it does take us away from our Communities and families quite a bit. We are much better trained than when I graduated almost 30 years ago for sure.

We had a much better couple of weeks for 911 calls with only one mis-dial, likely kids playing with the phone.

We are investigating a complaint of a theft of a male steer calf from the Redvers area. The brand inspector is assisting with this investigation.

We assisted Regina Police Service and Public Prosecutions to serve Subpoena’s.

Many get this confused with the service of a summons.

Subpoena means you are a witness.

Summons means you are an accused.

We had several Break and Enter investigations over the last two weeks. A business was broken into in Arcola and the investigation is continuing. Four Cottages were broken into in the Carlyle area and our Forensic Identification Section is assisting with these crimes. A Quonset was broken into in the Redvers area and a truck was stolen and it was recovered near Fleming.

Members were dispatched to an individual who was “Napping” on main street. He was found to be in Breach of his release conditions and lodged and released before a Justice of the Peace.

We had a False alarm in Whitebear, Wawota, Kenosee, Redvers, and 2 in Carlyle.

Members assisted the Manor and Carlyle Fire Departments with a Fire in Manor and Carlyle Fire with a further call in the rural area near Carlyle. We would like to give a big thank

you to these volunteers who sacrifice a lot to make our communities safer.

We had a report of two individual firing weapons on a farm near Manor. Both were arrested at gunpoint, however, Members quickly determined they were there legally with valid permission. It appears that one family member chose not to notify others. This ended up being a risky situation which was caused by “Family” choosing not to share relevant information.

We continue to receive reports of people driving impaired or without a valid licence.

We appreciate these calls and will continue to investigate them.

Members assisted EMS with a call of an individual that took too many pills. We would like to remind everyone that your pills are for you and you only. Please ensure they are not easily accessible so that we can avoid individuals miss using them, sometimes tragically.

Members attended a call at a residence where two individuals were fighting over a jacket.

Members calmed things down and departed after leaving both parties with advice and support.

Members responded to a third party complaint where someone in Regina thought someone in the Carlyle area was being assaulted.

phone tickets were issued. ($280) One of our Members stopped a speeding vehicle in Manor. They suggested they had a justifiable reason for speeding. They did not. Many people think they have a good reason to speed, however, they don’t.

Some we have heard: “I have to go to the washroom”, “I am late for work/dentist/doctor/pick up my children from school”, “A loved one just died”, “I forgot my cell phone”, “I don’t like driving in the dark”, “I had to pass that slow driver”, “I am late for court”, “I did not know what the speed limit was”, “I wasn’t paying attention” and “I need to get gas”.

As a reminder, if you get different size tires on your vehicle, as we see with many pickups please get your speedometer calibrated, otherwise expect a speeding ticket.

A couple of years ago I had an individual try and explain to me that he is driving a high performance Mercedes designed to operate on the Autobahn. I issued him a ticket explaining I lived in Germany and there are other roadways besides the Autobahn’s and the Mercedes, BMW’s and other high performance vehicles I drove managed to deal with the speed limits quite fine.

There is also the story (joke) of the Mountie that pulled over a vehicle for speeding. This vehicle took quite some time to stop. The Mountie told the driver if he had a good reason for speeding and not pulling over right away he might just get a warning. The driver looked down sheepishly and stated “My wife left me a month ago” The Mountie said “That is not a good enough reason”. The driver then stated, “I understand, but she left me for a Mountie and I was afraid

it might be you trying to bring her back” We had many expensive tickets over the last 2 weeks. The most expensive being $310, $320, $356, $530 and $562.

Our Traffic Units came into our area and they focussed on seatbelts which resulted in 20 Seatbelt violations including for inadequate child safety seat. As an adult you are making a bad choice by not wearing your seatbelt. Choosing not to properly secure your child is an extremely dangerous and, well, stupid decision.

We also dealt with inadequate windshields (usually cracks) ($115), window tint ($115) , fail to produce Registration ($100.00), Pedestrians on the highway’s, passing when unsafe, obstructed licence plates ($150), drive without a licence ($150), Operate over-dimensional vehicle ($90), Fail to Produce Drivers Licence, inadequate daytime running lights, brake lights fail to emit red light, and inadequate headlamps.

One driver chose to restrict the ability of another vehicle to pass and flipped the other driver the “Bird” This resulted in the RCMP being called. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver given a ticket for not having a drivers licence and the passenger arrested on an outstanding warrant. Personally I would think that one would not try and attract the attention of the Police when they are driving illegally, but I know from experience that is not always the case.

We had 3 collisions that were reported in the last two weeks, one involving a deer, and one involving a moose.

We hope everyone can get the harvest off before the weather changes. If you don’t have snow tires on please consider getting them on.

there was a verbal argument but apparently nothing else transpired.

A familiar individual was causing problems at a residence. Members located this intoxicated individual and provided him a ride to a relatives.

We investigated a report of Mischief near Redvers where cattle are damaging a neighbours crops. Hopefully with our involvement the matter is resolved.

Members attended a residence in the Carlyle area where an intoxicated individual was causing serious problems.

Fortunately the individual fell asleep (passed out?) before the arrival of the RCMP and everyone was satisfied with the outcome.

Some less than considerate individual chose to key a vehicle on the passenger side to the rear. The owner did not immediately see this and is uncertain where it took place.

We are investigating a reported theft of an orange riding lawnmower in Arcola.

We are investigating a report of someone taking a motor vehicle without permission in the Carlyle area.

We had two incidents of threats reported and both were deemed to be non-criminal. To be considered criminal in nature there must be fear of death or bodily harm. Saying I will make your life miserable is not considered a threat, some just consider marriage, . . . not me dear, not me.

Not all individuals we deal with in relation to driving violations get tickets. Some get verbal warnings, others get written warnings and some get tickets. Thus not all those referred to in this report get tickets.

We dealt with over 47 speeders in the last 2 weeks, 7 no insurance violations ($580) and 4 stop sign violations. ($230), and three cell

10 fun facts about the Carlyle Dickens Festival Submitted by Michele Amy “Sixteen years? I’m surprised that The Dickens Festival is still going!” How many times has Shelley Slykhuis heard that comment around town?

How often have readers thought exactly the same thing – or some version of the same question? Well, people might be surprised, but generally, everyone is pretty grateful that it still is running.

What fun it is to have so many diverse elements of our local community come together on this weekend to visit, share time, catch up, (dress up) and get into the community Christmas Spirit – even if it IS one filled with Bah – Humbugs!

And here are TEN Fun Facts which might not be common knowledge!

1. This Festival was originally started by the local economic develop-

ment agency under the leadership of Judy Riddell. Judy got the idea by attending the Dickens festival in Garrison, ND, which is now entering its 25th year. The Carlyle Dickens Village Festival, the only one of its kind in Canada, is now entering its 16th year and is run solely by community volunteers.

2. Over 17 service groups, clubs and local organizations use the Dicken’s festival as one of their primary fundraisers for the year!

3. 100% of the funds generated by the festival STAY in the community.

4. In 2018, the festival will highlight 100% local musicians from over 11 different communities in the S.E. corner including: White Bear, Langbank, Kenosee Lake, Forget, Carlyle, Alida, Manor, Alameda, Estevan, Lampman, Carnduff, 5. The entire festival is funded by the proceeds of the “Dickens

Sale” of donated used items which takes over the local hall twice yearly and is coordinated and manned by an army of volunteers.

6. Cornerstone Theatre Inc. has now adapted and presented 16 versions of Charles’ Dickens “A Christmas Carol” which has included locally written and produced versions as well as many professional adaptations. This year, by popular demand, “Carol” is being staged as an encore. One of the biggest complaints about the festival each year by tourists is that the play sells out and they cannot get tickets.

7. 100% of the proceeds from Cornerstone’s Dickens production and the Fezzywig pub are re-invested into the renovations and the upkeep of the Carlyle Memorial Hall and Theatre. This year, 10% of ticket sales is also being donated to the local food bank.

8. In 2018, the children of the S.E. Sask. communities are being included in the festival in an active role.

The Dickens committee is partnering with the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party to organize a children’s Christmas Concert production titled The Cratchitt Kids’ Production, of “Christmas Is”, whose show will be staged for audiences in the Fezzywig’s hall on Saturday morning before the magician show.

9. One of the stated goals of the Dickens Festival is to “give back to” our local business community, as the local businesses are so generous all year long with their contributions of money, goods, discounts and sponsorships for all of the local clubs, schools and organizations. To this end, the festival has attracted approximately 6 bus tours each year, bringing shoppers and tourists to the Town of Carlyle, as well as en-

Carbon tax still doesn’t change things

By Murray Mandryk Even when it comes to issues as complex as climate change and the carbon tax, there usually is a bottom line.

And that bottom line is driven by common sense.

So here’s the common sense in the wake of the federal Liberal government announcement last week that will return 90 per cent of all the money it collects from a its carbon price directly to the Canadians.

If you give people money to compensate them for the extra costs of gas and other things caused by a carbon tax, it’s quite likely they will continue to spend it on those exact behaviours that burn more carbon.

For that reason, it seems unlikely that Trudeau’s carbon tax will actually work.

If gas goes up 20 cents a litre, does it necessarily stop driving your kids to hockey to driving to shopping?

Maybe if had to bear the costs yourself, it would cause you to car pool when you take your kids to hockey. Maybe it might get you thinking about being a little more efficient when it comes to shopping trips you make when you drive.

In time, it might even have you thinking about getting a more fuel-efficient vehicle . . . although in our climate often plagued by ice and snowdrifts for six months of the year, that will remain a tough choice.

But what is the incentive to do so if you are getting a cheque back from government to cover the added gas costs? Will the money from Ottawa (an estimated $598 in Saskatchewan) be enough to help buy a new vehicle or making needed home renovations to improve energy efficiency?

“Starting next year, it will no longer be free to pollute anywhere in Canada,” Trudeau said in his announcement.

Ottawa will now impose a minimum price on pollution of $20 a tonne of carbon emissions on Jan. 1. Non-compliant provinces like Saskatchewan (along with Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick will now have a federal carbon levy on fuels while large industrial emitters will face a cap-and-trade like system imposed on them, starting April 1.

While 90 per cent the rebates will go back to households and the remaining 10 per cent will got back to small and medium-sized businesses, schools, hospitals and other organizations unable to past back to consumers.

This is all designed to mitigate the impact on the public and others who will see carbon tax costs passed on them, but the Saskatchewan government doesn’t see it that way.

“We see it as a cynical vote-buying scheme using your money to buy your vote,” Premier Scott Moe told reporters.

In fairness to Trudeau and the federal government, this isn’t exactly as Moe suggests.

Carbon pricing does seem to be at least based on a revenue-neutral premise that takes money from those the federal government deemed to be polluters and giving it back to people to pay the added costs.

But, again, does that really address greenhouse gas emissions? Will it necessarily even chance the behaviour of so-called emitters? After all, if their customers have money in their pockets from the federal government to pay the added carbon taxes that will now be required how does it really effect how business is done?

Certainly, one can be critical of provincial governments like Saskatchewan doing little other than being critical, always, the easy way out for politicians.

Ottawa has a legitimate point that Saskatchewan’s “Prairie Resilience”, a plan that doesn’t really address coal-fired electrical generation that, arguably, the province’s biggest single GHG emission issue.

But the Sask. Party government’s argument that it’s just not sound to send people cheques to compensate them for the secondary costs this tax seems to make sense.

The bottom line is this carbon tax won’t likely change behaviour.

Letting the gratitude outshine the gift A guest on a TV talk show was sharing pictures of a recent celebration. The audience oohed and aahed over images of a smartly dressed couple posing with guests on a yacht. Huge floral displays filled the railings and spilled over into an area where guests enjoyed delicacies prepared by a well-known chef. A casual glance My Outlook would suggest it was a high-end Shelley Luedtke wedding. It wasn’t. It was actually a first anniversary party.

Certainly this celebrity couple wouldn’t blink an eye at a celebration that rivalled their actual wedding, but it isn’t just the rich and famous who are encouraged to spend big when the first year marker comes along. There is an increasingly large movement within the wedding industry urging couples to re-create their big day by doing it over again on their first anniversary.

You start with the venue--ideally, they say--the same place you got married. The guest list should include those who attended your wedding along with the acquaintances you’ve acquired in the year since your marriage.

Next you choose your theme as the jumping off point for decor, cuisine and music. Once that is set you contact your original vendors such as the DJ, photographer and florist to “re-create the magic from your special day.” A party planner explained, “The idea that all of your loved ones can be together and celebrate in your first year of marriage is priceless.”

And pricey.

Seems to me couples are now expected to match, if not outspend, the dollar figure of their actual wedding day. Quite the way for the industry to keep dollars flowing. Or does that sound too cynical?

Perhaps it’s not cynicism as much as it is sadness. A behavioural psychologist wonders if these elaborate celebrations so early on in a marriage are

indicative of the disheartening reality that people don’t have expectations of the longevity of marriage.

Or the longevity of much, for that matter.

Corporations that struggle with employee retention have been looking for solutions to high turnover. Some are hiring outside assistance in determining what types of gifts would provide extra incentives and encourage employees to stick around.

Since the average employee stays in a job 4.4 years experts suggest making a big deal of the 5-year mark for those that stay that long. Stock options or a onemonth paid sabbatical are the top suggestions, however one company is known for presenting Samurai swords. A far cry from the days when people worked for the same company for decades and received a gold watch at the end. Parties of some sort for each year of employment is the norm in some places, with the hope it will encourage people to stay on board.

My husband and I marked a significant anniversary a few weeks ago. It had nothing to do with a relationship milestone, nor was it job related. Ten years ago we were in a hospital listening to a doctor’s diagnosis that set us back on our heels regarding my husband’s health. Within days he was in an operating room and although there were difficult setbacks following surgery, we rejoiced in the outcome…and have been rejoicing ever since. When the ten-year marker rolled around we wanted to acknowledge it-which we did--by taking part in the kinds of activities we do every day; activities he can participate in because of what took place in that operating room 10 years earlier. It was an expression of thankfulness for all we had going on at the time. The activity of life. Exactly what we were celebrating.

We should always be mindful of reasons to celebrate, but what sets an event apart is not the atmosphere, but the attitude. Even more important than the festivity is the expression of gratitude. Thank you for sharing this year of marriage with me, thank you for the work you do on the job, thank you for health that has been restored. The most meaningful part of the commemoration occurs when the show of gratitude upstages the show. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Incorporation consideration If you’re like most unincorporated small business owners or a professional whose regulatory body allows incorporation (known as a Professional Corporation) you’re likely considering whether or not to incorporate and, if so, when is the best time.

While it’s true that incorporation does deliver terrific tax benefits and some creditor protection from your personal assets, there are pros, cons and caveats to incorporation that might affect your decision. Let’s look at them.

Cons • Cash Flow If you need all of the profits from your business to support your personal cash flow needs, incorporation may not be for you as the cost of setting up and maintaining the corporation could outweigh any tax benefits. On the other hand, if you are financially able to retain some profits inside the corporation, you could derive significant tax deferral and potential tax savings.

• Taxing Questions If you are just starting your business, incorporation should probably wait because losses incurred by an incorporated business can’t flow through to shareholders. In the early stages of your business, you’re likely better off using losses personally against other income. Once your business begins to earn income in excess of your own personal lifestyle needs you may begin to benefit from the ability to defer your tax liability to a future period and benefit from potential tax savings (in most provinces).

Caveats • Creditor-proofing Personal Assets Corporate creditors can generally only go after assets owned by the corporation. However, banks and other suppliers often require small business owners to personally guarantee corporate liabilities and corporate directors may be liable for many types of unpaid debts such as outstanding income tax, HST, GST and employee source deductions. Incor-

poration may provide some creditor protection, but only if properly structured, so speak to an advisor to ensure you are protected.

Pros • Income splitting by paying dividends on shares held by other family members can result in overall tax savings where marginal tax rates within the family vary due to different levels of income. Recent amendments to the Income Tax Act (Canada) make income splitting more difficult and in some cases is no longer possible so existing structures should be reviewed to ensure they are still compliant and new strategies should be mindful of these changes.

Salaries that are not in excess of a reasonable amount continue to be an effective way to income split.

• Deferring certain expenses. For example, you can deduct employee bonuses for tax purposes before year-end but are only required to actually pay out the bonus after year-end (certain restrictions

apply).

• Leaving assets in the corporation where they will continue to grow on a tax-deferred basis until you choose to withdraw them.

• Creating a registered pension plan and tax-deductible group health and life insurance plan for you and your employees (which could include family members).

• Choosing a fiscal year spanning any 12-month period. Select a fiscal year that coincides with business or cash flow peaks or when corporate expenses are higher (potentially reducing your tax bite).

• Structuring your corporation to continue after your death for estate planning purposes.

There are certainly potential benefits to incorporation

but incorporating also comes with costs – from initial setup and legal costs to ongoing requirements for tax returns and corporate resolutions – and other legal requirements.

Tips for welcoming a new puppy into your home Have you decided to welcome a new puppy into your life? Congratulations!

However, for things to go smoothly when you first bring him home, make sure you’re well prepared.

For starters, it’s important to understand that moving into a new place will be a stressful experience for your puppy. Leaving his mother and his litter behind to meet a whole new family represents a major turning point in his young life. You’ll therefore need to make sure that his first moments in his new surroundings are as peaceful as possible. Avoid making loud noises or smothering him with affection, as this could disorient or frighten your canine companion.

Set up a comfy corner with a blanket, a bed and some toys to help your puppy feel at home. Make sure it’s in a quiet place where there isn’t much foot traffic, but he can still observe what’s going on in the

house. Designate a space — in the kitchen, for example — for his food and water bowls.

Finally, let your new puppy familiarize himself with his new home at his own pace. With the exception of rooms you

don’t want him to access, he should be allowed to explore the entire house freely. Furthermore, give him lots of attention during the first few days to help him transition from his old family and get used to his new one.

PureChem Cougars ready to pounce on new season Flashback to November 3, 2017 when the Carlyle PureChem Cougars opened their 2017/2018 season with a convincing 6-0 win over the ArcolaKisbey Combines, who had just returned back to the league after a leave of absence in 2016. With about 740 boisterous fans in attendance, the local Cougars saw Kelly Currie score the first goal of the season and goaltender Josh Hohn record the shutout.

By the end of the season, the Cougars had battled hard for the final seed of the playoffs, but came up short against the tough, top-seeded team during the 2017/2018 regular season - the Carnduff Red Devils.

So with all teams now prepared for the kick off of a new season this week, November through to February for the Big Six Hockey League (www.bigsixhockey.com) brings a renewed optimism by all ten teams, yes that would be ten with the addition of the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings. While the fans will see a reduced regular season schedule compared to the 24 games last year, they can expect some exciting and tight races for playoff spots all season long.

On Friday, November 2, come out and support the Cougars as they open up at home against the Midale Mustangs.

The Carlyle Hooters Rec. hockey team has honored one of their own by having the Hooters’ logo and “In loving memory” of teammate Wayne Dunn, affectionately known as “Papa”, painted on the side of the zamboni at the sports arena. Wayne passed away earlier in the year and was a longtime player for the Hooters and the men’s senior team, the Carlyle Cougars in his earlier years. The Hooters and the Cougars joined together on the ice on Oct. 27 and entertained those in attendance at Chase the Ace in an “all-in-fun” hockey game.

The Wawota Haunted was open to any brave souls that dared to enter its doors. On the evenings of Oct. 26 and Oct 27, 483 people made their way through the rooms of the house. On Sunday afternoon, Oct. 28, 126 went through. Proceeds made from admission went to the playground committee for a new playground structure.

FCC Drive Away Hunger provides over 9.5 million meals On Oct. 17 the FCC (Farm Credit Canada) gals set out to collect food from 2 of our local schools to help out the Carlyle food bank.

The first school we went to was the Redvers School. They collected 319 lbs. of food to help

out their surrounding neighbors.

The next stop we made was to CES where we recruited some alumni who are now in Grade 10 at GF Kells High and who are needing volunteer hours for their wellness class, to help

us load and haul the 941 lbs. of food we collected from CES. This is the 15th anniversary of FCC doing drive away hunger, and this year they exceeded expectations by raising over 9.5 million meals.

Wawota news

Submitted by Myrna Olson On Oct. 11, Phil Heinrichs and Sylvia Jewkes joined 14 others to spend 10 days in the Holy Land. They arrived at the Ben Gurion International Airport and travelled to Haifa for the night. The following day they sailed the Sea of Galilee, toured the remains of Peter’s house and the synagogue where Jesus preached.

The next day they drove north to the Jordon Valley and the Golan Heights. On Oct. 15 they travelled across the border into Jordan where they stopped at Jerash to view impressive ruins of the ancient Roman city, stopped at Mt. Nebo where Moses got a glimpse of the promised land. On to Petra and then back to Israel through Arava to the Dead Sea. Other points they visited were Masada, Ein Gediand Genesis Land at Abraham’s tent for a Bible Study and camel ride. Day 8 was at the Mt. of Olives, Kidron Valley, Church of the Last Supper and the Garden Tomb. The following day was spent in Old and New Jerusalem, King David’s City, the Western Wall and the National memorial and Museum of the Holocaust.

Congratulations to David Nicurity and Andrea Brittner who were married on Oct. 13. The ceremony was held at the Legislative Buildings in Regina.

Another wedding of interest was that of Jarek Fornwald and Amanda Gagnon on Oct. 20. This wedding took place at the Italian Club in Regina. Paul and Tenille Ford, Emery and Autumn attended this event. Tenille was one of the bridesmaid’s for her brother’s wedding and Emery was the flower girl.

Sympathy to the family of Marj Davis who passed away Oct. 21. We are thinking of her children, Shirley Brimner, Jill Taylor and Murray Davis and their families and Marj’s siblings. She is also remembered by her many friends. She was 89 years old.

News has been received of the passing of Moira Bonar, widow of the late Dr. Gordon Bonar of Deloraine, Manitoba. She passed away on Oct. 5 at the age of 82 years.

Congratulations to Larissa and Dain Sorensen on the arrival of a baby boy on Oct. 15.

He weighed 4 lbs., 13 oz. and has been named Miller Grey.

Congratulations to Craig and Nicole Olson on the birth of their son on Oct. 24. He weighed 8 lbs., 8 oz. and has been named Michael Keith.

It is with much sadness we announce Gordon Petterson’s passing at Deer View Lodge Wawota, Saskatchewan, formerly of Manor, Saskatchewan, on October 13, 2018 at age 80.

Gordon was predeceased by his parents Melvin and Agnes Petterson; brothers-in-law Bill Freeman and Bernard Moberg; niece Isabell Smith; father-in-law and mother-inlaw Henry and Esther Krueger; brothers-in-law Don and Wayne Krueger; sister-in-law Ruth (Elmer) Martin.

Gordon’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; daughters, Alisa (Kevin) Earl and their children Kiana, Branna, Clinton and Leeman and Julie (Cameron) Roy and their son Rein. Gordon will be fondly remembered by his sister Evelyn Freeman; sisters-in-law Lynn (Henry) Hokanson, Pat Krueger and Marlene Krueger; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Funeral Service was held Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 2 pm at the Manor Legion Community Hall. Reverend Michelle Moore of�iciated. Honorary Pallbearers were Jack and Lois Gilliss and Alex and Jeaninne Eisler. Regan Miller played Amazing Grace on the bag pipes as Gordon was escorted to his last ride. He was taken to the cemetery by a team of Percheron horses driven by his grandson, Rein Roy. Internment was at Manor Cemetery with ‘Going Home’ piped followed by a reception and time of fellowship.

Gordon Melvin Petterson was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan, Saskatchewan on September 23, 1938. He grew up on a mixed farm south of Estevan with his parents Melvin and Agnes and older sister, Evelyn. He rode horse back to Wood End School. Gordon wanted to become a member of the R.C.M.P. Instead he began working on a neighbor’s farm at age 13. He worked at various jobs including power line construction, a cat skinner at Boundry Dam, electrician’s helper and a pipe �itter at National Tank as well as farming with his dad.

Gordon met Shirley while she was teaching at Wood End School. They were married on July 3, 1958. His love of farming grew into purchasing a farm in 1960 at Manor, Saskatchewan. Over the years the farmland grew larger and the cattle herd increased. The next 58 years were spent doing what he loved best, FARMING. Gordon also enjoyed hunting and the annual family �ishing trips.

Two daughters were born, Alisa in 1971 and Julie in 1974. Gordon’s life revolved around his two girls. He taught them to ride horses and skate at a young age. He carried Alisa on his shoulders while doing chores. Gordon and Shirley became very involved in all the activities of the girls during their school years. Figure skating, 4-H, Horse shows and rodeo became a big part of their lives and his. Weekends were spent travelling to rodeos for many years.

He was proud of his 5 grandchildren and their accomplishments. Grandpa enjoyed hearing about the hockey games, horse shows, barrel racing, swimming, volley ball and Piano recitals or any event that involved them. He would tell anyone that was willing to listen about all their activities.

His pride of Manor led him into a lifetime of community involvement. He had years of hockey as a player and coach plus 26 years as a referee. Winters were spent as a volunteer in the rink and local fund raising. Gordon was on the School Division Board for 13 years. Work with the Manor Fun Daze Rodeo became a huge part of his life for 25 years. In 2001, he was chosen as “Committee Man of the Year” for the Canadian Cowboys Association. Gordon and Shirley were inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association.

The last few years, time was spent on coffee row with the ‘Old Boys’ as he called them. He enjoyed his life at Manor with his family and friends. Gordon was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and how he loved to tease and joke with everyone.

Our family would like to send deep appreciation and thank you to all of those who helped in any way at the time of Gordon’s passing.

Heartfelt thanks for all the excellent care Gordon received in Estevan Regional Nursing Home and Deer View Lodge in Wawota and to all who visited him in the nursing homes.

Thanks to all who sent cards, brought food, �lowers, visits, donations, along with the community members who worked and provided food for the reception.

Our thanks to all who participated in the service. Reverend Michelle Moore’s service was touching, comforting and beautiful.

Gordon Melvin Petterson

Duncan Robert Turton Duncan passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Center in Winnipeg at the age of 89 years.

Duncan will always be remembered by his siblings; Daisy May Goddard, Ralph Norman (Elizabeth) Turton, Jessie Gladys Corrigal, his daughters; Kareina Anne Turton and Marjorie Eunice (David) Senio, his grandchildren; Daniel (Brittany) Senio, Joseph (Tiara) Senio, Streetter Vickell, Dallas (Darren) Wing and Caillin Vickell, his great grandchildren; Ari, Bentley, Mikaela and Cadence. He will also be remembered by his dear friend Mary, Mavis Gustafson and her family, Lucie Coupal, the Brimner family, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Duncan was predeceased by his parents Robert Henry Turton and Emily Jane Turton (Deffey/Duffey), sisters Muriel, Lillian (Lily), Ruby, Ada, Eva and Hope, brothers Ronald, Ira and George, and Duncan’s second wife Evangeline (Vangie) Turton.

Duncan was born in Cannington Manor, one of 13 children. He worked at local farms for a few years before leaving home. Duncan joined his brother Ralph to work in the Estevan coal mines, loading coal, blasting in the pits and operating the drag lines. He worked at Pantaluk Construction as a CAT operator. Duncan worked at the SaskPower plant loading furnaces with a dozer and did machinery repairs for the mines. In Estevan, Duncan ran his business called Turton Bottles where people brought him their pop and beer bottles for refund. Duncan continued to work on heavy equipment and worked on many large projects such as the Alameda Dam. He returned to farming after retiring and cleared snow on local roads and cleared bush for nearby farmers. He helped out his brothers with the family farm.

He married Marjorie Smerek in 1955 and in 1957 became proud parents to their daughter Kareina and in 1958 to their second daughter Eunice. He married Evangeline (Vangie) in 1987 and they lived on the farm by Manor until she passed away. In his 70’s he married Lucie Coupal and after several years at the farm they moved to Weyburn and later to Medstead.

In November 2012, he felt the need to be near his daughters and moved to Winnipeg.

Duncan loved to share his experiences working with heavy machinery and the countless work projects he accomplished. His memory was outstanding.

He was proud of his 36 years of sobriety. In his younger days Duncan enjoyed playing baseball, loved dancing (especially the jive), rounds of golf, playing pool, shuf�leboard and cards (his favorites were cribbage, whist and 31). In his last few years he passed his time watching baseball, listening to music and of course playing cards.

We would like to thank the Riverview Health Center, Palliative Care and Home Care staff and employees at Cathedrale Manor for their dedication, understanding and compassionate care. Following his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service.

I was informed of the death of Patricia Anderson of Weyburn She and her late husband Walter (Doc) lived in Alida in the late 1950’s until they moved to Carlyle. After Doc’s death in 1994, Pat moved to Regina then to Weyburn where she lived until she passed away on Oct. 12 at the age of 75 years.

Condolences are extended to the Anderson, Thompson and Szilagyi families.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Dot and Lawrence Zelionka on the death of her brother-in-law Donald Fallis of Estevan on Oct. 21 at the age of 75 years. At his request no service will be held and intern-

Condolences are extended to all members of the Peet and Shain families on the sudden passing of Riley Shain on Oct. 21 at the age of 30 years at his ranch near Oxbow. His funeral service was held Oct. 26 at the Glen Ewen Communiplex with interment at Oxbow Cemetery.

Family members and friends attended the Funeral Service for Dolly Leveille, late of Regina and formerly of Estevan and Alida, was held Oct. 26 at Carnduff United Church with interment at the Carnduff Cemetery. Dolly had passed away at the Extendicare – Parkside in Regina on Oct. 22 at the age of 95 years. Condolences are once again extended to all family members.

Gloria Girard (Sylvan Lake, AB) accompanied Poncho and Sharon Laval and their daughter Christie (all of Red Deer, AB) to attend the funeral service of their aunt Dolly Levielle on Oct. 26.

They also visited with mother/aunt Dot Girard and other family in the Alida area.

Yvonne Dzuba, Weyburn attended the funeral service of Dolly Levielle in Carnduff on Oct. 26. Later she visited with Jeanne Lemieux in Oxbow before returning home.

From Page 18 - Alida news Margaret Peet spent a couple of days (Oct. 1921) in Regina where she visited with her mother Claire Germain and sister Pauline Craggs. She also attended the Mamma Mia concert on Oct. 20.

On Oct. 24 Joyce and Jackie George, Redvers were dinner guests with Gray, Edel and John Cowan.

Faye Walker spent from Oct. 25-28 is Saskatoon where she attended a Teachers Superannuation meeting and also visited with her family – daughter Deidra, Jeff Nickle and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper.

Leonard and Lil Patton attended the volleyball tournament in Langberg on Oct. 27 where they watched their granddaughter Cordelia Patton participate with the Oxbow Senior Girls Volleyball Team. The girls won gold – Congratulations team on a job well done – keep up the good work.

The Oxbow Junior Girls volleyball team played in the Carnduff tournament and on Oct. 27 the girls won gold. Brooke Schulhauser is the girl from Alida area who plays for this team. Congratulations team on a job well done – keep up the good work.

What a weekend (Oct. 26-27) we had in Alida at the Haunted House. SPOOKS of all ages, from 8 – 80 arrived at the rink ready to take up their positions in the Haunted House. They defiantly had their work cut out for them and were kept very busy especially on Saturday when 123 visitors, also dressed in full costume, toured through the “Halls of Horror”.

There were lots of screams, yells, hollers and laughs as these visitors returned to home base. Everyone surely did seem to enjoy themselves. Friday evening 71 visitors arrived and toured the haunted house, and they too enjoyed their tour. Visitors came from many different areas – including Carnduff, Storthoaks, Redvers, Tilston, MB, Estevan, Fillmore, Gains-

bourgh, Carlyle, Oxbow, Wawota, Alameda, Arcola, Minot and Hillcrest Mines, AB. It’s just amazing who arrives to visit our Haunted House. On Sunday, October 28 it was also our Fun Fair where the children really enjoy the many different games that were organized, going home with all kinds of prizes and goodies. Many of these children also enjoyed a tour through the Haunted House as the lights were left on and the spooks were still sleepy from the night before. We also had NINE very special visitors come for a tour through the Haunted House (they brought two helpers with them). They were from Carnduff Sunset Haven, and among these guests were two former residents from Alida – Dot Girard and Art Shier – it was great to see you folks again and of course the other ones as well. They did seem to enjoy their trip and outing to Alida. The total number of visitors who toured our Haunted House on Sunday was 86 – another good day. Results of the guessing games and draws made near closing time are as following: Halloween Cake Draw – Lincoln and Hudson Peet; The Marble Count Game – Kolton Schulhauser with his count of 254 (actual amount was 269; 50/50 Draw – Gail McLachlin and Joe Harvey (received $50); Table Prize Draws (1) rubber spider mat – Tanelle Kruse (Minot); (2) Helicopter – Holly Anthony; (3) Ghost etc. – Edel Cowan; (4) Witch – Holly Anthony); (5) Lamp – Neil Gervais family (Alameda); (6) Candy bucket – Steven Wilson (Estevan); 1st Halloween sign – Dave/Shanna Carriere; 2nd Halloween sign – N. Gervais family. All in all it was another successful weekend with a total of 290 visitors visiting the Haunted House plus the 136 visitors during the first weekend for a grand total of 326 visitors – AWESOME. Great work from all our spooks and volunteer workers without your help we wouldn’t have such a great success.

Knights of Columbus host Hallowe’en party in Redvers Knights of Columbus Council #4850 was pleased to host the annual Hallowe’en Gala for the S.E.Sask Regional Special Needs Care Homes this past Thursday, October 25, 2018. This was probably the 36th (estimated) Annual Event held by the Redvers council of the Knights of Columbus with Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church generously providing the venue.

This year we hosted approximately 180 special guests from various centres in S.E. Sask., such as Weyburn, Estevan, Carnduff, Carlyle, Carievale and also some guests from Manitoba!

This event provides for a fun atmosphere for all the guests who come fully attired in fancy gouhlish costumes for dancing, camaraderie and a spaghetti & meat sauce feast prepared by the

members of the Knights of Columbus. This year’s team consisted of Real Wolensky, Earl Cunningham, Raymond Lamotte, Marcel Dauvin, Elmer Doell and our famous Chef de Jour; Marius Erickson.

The weather co-operated with a gorgeous day, allowing for easy transport to and from their respective homes.

We’re looking forward to next year already!
