Rockets take lead in final Big Six series

The finals of the Big Six League are well underway with a battle between the top two teams of the regular season – the Carnduff Red Devils and the Redvers Rockets. During their match-up in Carnduff on Friday, March 16, the game went into double overtime before the Rockets capitalized on a scoring chance to win 4-3. Redvers leads the series 2-0 and the next action is set in Carnduff for Thursday, March 22, followed by a Friday game in Redvers on March 23. Both games are to start at 8 p.m. (See more Big Six coverage on page 10.)

Optimist Club of Arcola helping community clubs and organizations thrive Kelly Running Observer Staff

It was a night of giving as the Optimist Club of Arcola hosted their 2018 Rally Banquet. After hosting their 25th Annual Snowmobile Rally in January the Optimists – a club which focuses on helping better the lives of youth – presented various clubs and youth organizations with 100 percent of the ticket sales that each one sold.

“Over the last few years it’s been our great pleasure to help,” Optimist President Blake Brownridge stated. “It helps several communities and we hope to help you realize your goals.”

A total of 2,300 tickets were sold: 872 were sold

by Optimist Club members, 183 were sold by the Arcola Curling Club, 250 by the Arcola Day Care, 100 by Arcola Figure Skating, 80 by the Arcola Rodeo Committee, 234 by the Moose Mountain Wado Kai Karate Club, 77 by the Moose Mountain Wildlife Federation, 104 by the Prairie Place Complex, 100 by the Rebels Volleyball Club, and 300 by the Southeast Vipers Volleyball Club (14U and 16U teams).

Donations of 90 percent of the sales were able to go back to the clubs this year, which Brownridge says is tied into the great support from sponsors, which allow the Optimists to host the Snowmobile Rally itself.

“Our rally was very, very successful… especially when it was a snowmobile rally with no snow,” Brownridge laughed. “So many people came out to put their name in for prizes and to talk about the last 24 years. There were a lot of people who chose to spend their day with us.”

“Everything we do that day, we have phenomenal sponsors, who ensure that its always a success and because of them we were able to give out nearly $27,000; so thank you to the business owners for your support and allowing us to do what we do.”

Additionally an annual donation of $500 is given to the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club for allowing the Optimists to use their trails and for ensuring they are freshly groomed for the event. Although there was unfortunately no snow this year, a donation for the appreciation of the Snowmobile Club was still given although a representative was unable to attend that night.

This year the Optimists have a few projects in the works, which includes discussions with the town over relocating the RV Park in town.

“We feel like we could make it a better fit for the town,” Brownridge said. “The one here in town right now is a tight fit for many of the newer units and it’s a long ways from the functions that all seem to be held over there;” gesturing in the direction of Prairie Place Complex and the Rodeo Grounds.

They are also looking at the possibility of building a skate park in town like Wawota has done. This project is thought to be a one or two year project and they are hopeful government grants will be available to them.

Additionally the Optimists maintain and operate The Mac – the local theatre which shows movies and brings in live entertainment. This building has undergone major renovations over the years and this coming spring a power upgrade will be one more improvement that the Optimists will have achieved with the theatre.

“It’s been really nice to be able to have that available in town,” Brownridge added. “It doesn’t just serve Arcola, but many other families, kids, and adults enjoy the movies from all over.”

Skating in “A Winter Wonderland” Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Wawota Skating Club presented their annual year-end performance themed to “A Winter Wonderland” on Friday, March 16.

Performances included solos, group performances, a special guest – Braida LeNouial of Esterhazy, and the Elementary Synchronized Skating Team – the Southeast Fire Crackers – made up of youth from Kipling, Kennedy, and Wawota.

Throughout the season the Coach – Leanne Sorenson – and the Program Assistants – Madison Wilson, Anna Van Winkoop, Makenzie Restau, Rory Greenbank, Mercedes Jamieson, Jaicee Lemieux, Zach Mudrewich, Kaylee Mudrewich, Hailey Prince, and Shaelen Tripp – ensured a successful year.

Sorenson wanted to specifically acknowledge a few skaters saying, “I want to congratulate, for Finishing CanSkate this year are: Gracie Rohatyn, Willow Byrne, Zoey Friesen, Isabella Restau, and Raelynn Jones.”

“Broadway” comes to Carlyle rink Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle Skating Club brought Broadway to the rink as they performed their year-end program on Sunday, March 18.

Throughout the performance – a series of solo, pairs, and group skates – the group skaters performed with the theme of “Broadway” in mind, while the individual and pairs performed their competition routines.

Particularly earning acknowledgements were: Program Assistant – Tianna Delalleau CanSkate Rising Star – Chloe George CanSkater of the Year – Brynn Chapman CanSkate Achiever Award – Gabriel Littlechief StarSkate Outstanding Skater Award – Kati Van Winkoop Artistry Award sponsored by Grace Smyth – Anna Doty StarSkater of the Year – Tiana Delalleau Sask Club and Recreational Coach of Excellence – Jenna Toms The club also welcomed guest skater Emma Davidson of Regina to perform two solo programs, which were enjoyed by all and was a particular delight for the young skaters to see such skill.

Knights of Columbus Snowmobile Derby welcomes 69 sledders The Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus 24th Annual Snowmobile Derby was “aided by a little divine intervention,” according to member Ray Boutin of Carlyle.

“We had snow,” smiles Boutin. “And because of that, we had 69 riders.”

The Sunday, March 11 event was held at Richard and Michael Weber’s Freemantle Farms, near Carlyle.

Riders from throughout southeast Saskatchewan and from as far away from Calgary enjoyed “excellent riding conditions,” says Boutin. “Every rider received a prize but the Arcola guys stole the show this year.”

“Jordan Workman won $1,200, Anthony Faber won $720 and Bill Cann won $480.”

Boutin says the real winners of the day are the numerous community causes the Knights

of Columbus support in this area.

“The snowmobile derby is our biggest fundraiser,” he explains.

“And it allows us to support the Carlyle & District Food Bank, to fund a $1,000 bursary through SouthEast College to help a student to become a continuing care aide, to support the Special Olympics in Saskatchewan and to support worthy causes such as KidSport, just to name a few.”

Boutin says that the Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus also have an ongoing commitment to the Kenosee Lake Boys and Girls Camp.

“Our members also put in a lot of volunteer hours at the camp,” adds Boutin. “And we’ve recently redone the patio at the Mother Teresa Centre at Kenosee.”

“We work towards maintaining and upgrading the camp’s facilities and supplying resources. Right now,

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls between Thursday, March 8 and Thursday, March 15.

Members from the detachment will be in attendance at a Rural Crimewatch meeting in Wawota, Tuesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at the Wawota Town Hall.

Everyone is invited to attend.

RCMP will also be giving several talks in upcoming months, entitled “Before You Hit Send.”

These presentations - addressing internet awareness and safety - will take place at schools within the detachment area.

911 Three 911 were received this week. One was a misdial; one was abandoned and the third call was from a resident of Manor who reported that young people were knocking on doors and running away. The young people in question were located, spoken to by police and returned to their parents.

Assault Members responded to the report of an assault which originated in the Carlyle area. This was deemed to be unfounded by police.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP provided assistance to Cor-

rections Canada with regard to a prisoner who was returning to the detachment area for a visit as part of their pre-release conditions.

Police responded to a report from a school in the detachment area regarding a child’s absenteeism.

Alcohol-related offence(s) A motorist was arrested on Hwy 9 for impaired driving. This individual was also charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance and for headlight and tail light violations.

An impaired driver was arrested near Redvers.

Members responded to a report of an impaired driver in the Antler area.

An intoxicated individual was arrested and lodged in cells.

Break and enter A break and enter at a residence in the Carlyle area is currently under investigation by RCMP. False alarms Members responded to two false alarms within the detachment area during this period.

Fraud Staff Sgt. Simons reminds members of the public to be wary of attempted fraudulent activity, saying: “I recently received a message on my personal phone stating that the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) had a warrant out for my arrest and that the RCMP were coming to get me.”

“You can imagine my surprise,” he smiles.

An individual in Arcola purchased and item via the internet, but did not receive the item.

Mental Health Act Members dealt with one file under the Mental Health Act. Mischief Several individuals were removed from a residence in the Carlyle area and returned to their homes by police.

Property damage There are no suspects regarding deliberate damage to vehicles which was discovered after a party in Arcola.

In Carlyle, an ice scraper was used to damage property.

Theft A theft over $5,000 from an oilfield construction site in the Arcola area is under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. Traffic offences/Collisions A collision in the Redvers area resulted in injuries to two individuals. Both people were transported to hospital, with one person receiving further treatment in a Regina hospital. As a result of this accident, an individual was charged with: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, obstruction and a stop sign violation.

RCMP also confiscated a child safety seat. Staff Sgt. Simons says: “Please check expiration dates on child safety seats. And

remember, once a child safety seat is involved in a motor vehicle accident, it is no longer safe to use.”

Two separate collisions are currently under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. Two motorists were fined $580 each for motor vehicle insurance violations. Four motorists were fined $230 each for intersection-related offences - one of which almost caused a collision in a rural area near Carlyle.

An individual was found to be driving while suspended in Carlyle.

Members responded to the report of a careless driver in the Kisbey area.

RCMP responded to several speeding violations this week which involved motorists passing emergency vehicles at over 60 km per hour.

Three drivers received fines of $190 each and one motorist received a warning from police.

Two motorists received fines of $220 each for speeding through a school zone.

Two drivers were fined $280 each for operating a cellphone while driving.

Two individuals were fined $175 each for not wearing seatbelts.

A motorist was fined $150 for operating a motor vehicle without a valid drivers licence.

An individual was fined $175 for having an incorrect licence plate on a vehicle, while another person was found to be operating an unlicensed snowmobile.

An individual received a $100 fine for failing to produce valid

vehicle registration.

RCMP issued several inspection tickets and/or warnings, including: improper window tint and

problems with mufflers, exhaust pipes, daytime running lights, fenders, mudflaps and vehicle licence plate lights.

What is a competitor?

When I as in grade 4 I started playing volleyball. I lived on a farm outside a small town and our elementary school ranged between 18 and 22 kids depending on the year. The Vice Principal taught grades 1-3, the Principal taught 4-7, the administrative assistant was also the Kindergarten teacher, and we Kelly Running had a 0.5 time teacher that split Observer Staff between our school and Cadillac. To form a team to compete in the elementary league of grades 6s and 7s in the area everyone in 4-7 had to play.

I loved the competition immediately. Out of high school I had opportunities to go to the States for junior colleges, but I wanted to go to a university in Canada – schooling was more important to me than athletics. However, there are numerous characteristics that I’ve developed through playing a team sport I don’t know if I would have without it and skills that come from competing that I otherwise wouldn’t have.

I still enjoy competing. There’s a thrill of doing something to the best of your capabilities with a win or loss on the line. Obviously everyone wants to win, but if you don’t and you know you did everything you possibly could within your power, you’re still a winner – only you know if you gave your gold medal performance.

This past weekend I was invited to play on a team up at a ladies tournament. The team I was on battled into the final and lost in the third set. It was a relatively close game through and through, but competing at that level is always entertaining and even though we lost the organizers had picked out MVP, best setter, and best hitter of the tournament – so even though we lost I was delighted to find out one of my hitters had earned the best hitter accolade and was quite elated to find out I had been named the best setter of the tournament.

Prior to heading to the tournament I had watched a video by Russ Rose – a prominent coach in the States. He described what a competitor is and it resonated with me. I could identify those attributes and agreed with him on his points.

In summary he said that a competitor values the outcome and commits to the process – essentially they keep learning and working in order to achieve success. They’re disciplined. Although playing is fun a competitor gets a thrill from competing and pushing themselves to their limit. They are competitive against themselves, always looking to better themselves, and are competitive against others or against set standards (like improving serving numbers).

Most importantly though he said that a competitor is never afraid. I had never really thought about this before, but as I heard him say it I realized that when I come up against someone I know is good, I take it as a challenge. I never think a match is already lost. Currently the ladies team I play with, none have done much post-secondary playing, however we’ve come up against ex-university players and have not only held our own, but have taken sets off of them.

So, a tough mental game and believing that you’re going to do your best, going in there thinking you’re going to dig this and not cowering away from a big hitter, that’s what being a competitor is.

To me competition is healthy. The wins and losses on the court teach character. It’s not all about winning medals, but about doing your gold medal best.

Good news for the mind, great news for the body “Mom, you’re doing it again.”

And she was right.

My first impulse is always to seek out news coverage. As a child I was more interested in news programs than cartoons, much to the amusement of my friends. Or was it bewilderment?

I am still a news enthusiast, but much has changed in me--in the same way much has changed My Outlook in what is considered news. The Shelley Luedtke immediacy in which we get the images and the perceived need to get the story out as quickly as possible has given rise to unprecedented coverage before there is time to fully consider the impact of the event.

Since anyone on the scene is now a potential documentarian, the images come fast and furious as everyone’s phone is the conveyor of what is captured.

It quickly becomes newsworthy if deemed dramatic enough to capture an audience. Then analysis takes over--even before the details have had a chance to unfold, and truth gets pushed aside in favour of speculation. It is nearly impossible not to see how emotionally charged the coverage is. And so were my reactions. I got easily irritated, annoyed--even outraged, and found myself talking back to screens far too often. I knew it was bad for me. I just didn’t realize how bad.

Consistent exposure to negative news has a gradual yet steady impact in eroding our sense of optimism and well being. That won’t surprise many, but it appears the consequences are more profound than just increasing pessimism. It can lead to anxiety, fear, aggression, depression and even hamper our ability to think. We become subconsciously more attuned to the negativity, and news that we previously may have seen as neutral we tend to interpret as far more negative, dangerous or threatening. There is an increasing weariness in our state of affairs. It is impacting how we interpret the world and making some feel helpless, and others, angry.

A study after the Boston Marathon bombing found that people who watched six or more hours of media coverage of the event reported more acute stress symptoms than people who were directly exposed--the ones actually at the site of the bombings. Why? Because we’re watching footage of these events over and over again, and each time we do

there is a chemical reaction in our brains. Our limbic systems get fired up and the stress hormone cortisol is released. In the right amounts it helps regulate our bodily systems, but there is a reason it has been labelled public enemy number 1. As it spikes it suppresses immunity, increases hypertension, and interferes with learning and memory. The more disturbing the story--the more upset we become and the higher these levels go. Think about the repeated exposure of some events over the years. How many times have you seen the Twin Towers come down?

Or people scrambling over fallen rubble in war zones? Or students fleeing school grounds?

But it doesn’t need to be these heart-wrenching stories only. Believing we have an appetite for the undignified, we are directed to footage of a brawl in the stands at a hockey game, or protestors hurling bottles through storefronts, or rioters setting vehicles on fire. We are not passive observers in all this.

It is impacting us physiologically, because what our brains take in our bodies react to. Yes, we need to know what is going on so we can respond and see our place in a bigger picture, but we need to be sure we are taking in the good things too and not just a steady diet of unsettling items.

They won’t make the cut in what is considered breaking news, but they are stories we would be well served to know. Like the 9-year old boy with a traumatic brain injury who along with his mom opened a coffee shop that provides job training for individuals with special needs. The 70-year old man who gets up at 5:00 am to walk to the neighbourhood school to volunteer with the breakfast program. The 6-year old girl who wanted her birthday party held at a local shelter so she could share her cake. The foster family who adopted four children so siblings could stay together. The list goes on and on, because the number of good things go on and on. With each one we hear, our brain chemistry gets impacted--in a positive way, My daughter was right. I had fallen back into consuming too much negative news and it showed.

Rather than just watching the coverage and getting worked up, we could see it as a call to action, a todo list of needs we can respond to and people we can help. Because when we hear about someone doing great things it not only does the mind good, but the body too. Better yet, let’s decide that tomorrow we will be the headline of our own good news item.

That’s my outlook.

Rockets take lead in final Big Six series

(Updated as of Monday, March 19) The Redvers Rockets are in an early lead facing off against the Carnduff Red Devils in the final best of seven series for the Big Six championship.

The two teams first clashed on Wednesday, March 14, where the Rockets skated away with a resounding win of 4-0 over the Red Devils.

Three goals were had in the second period: Dakota Rose pulled out an unassisted goal, followed by a goal off Craig Gaudet’s stick from Drew Hoff and Brady Fidierchuk, and finally Brady Gaudet found the net from as-

sists by Todd Gervais and Cory Jones.

In the third period Dakota Rose scored the final goal of the game off an assist from Jordan Miller and Drew Hoff.

The two teams met again on March 16 in Carnduff where the Redvers earned a goal in the latter part of the first period: Drew Hoff sounded the buzzer after assists by Remi Lamotte and Brady Fidierchuk.

Less than two minutes later Carnduff’s Cody Moore scored off an assist by Landon Senchuk and Devon Carriere; then with 0:03 seconds left in the first Trevor Geiger lit up the goal off an assist by Nico Anderson during a Power Play to take the lead in the game 2-1.

Carlyle Minor Hockey Awards night will be held March 29th at the Carlyle High School gym at 7:00 p.m.

Heading into the second both teams played a physical game, but Carnduff persevered to score their third goal of the game. Brandon Trask made it to the net for a goal off the sticks of Shawn Gallant and Mark Moriarty.

Although the Red Devils were ahead, the Rockets propelled themselves forward with two goals in the third: Dakota Rose put up a goal off an assist from Brent Wilson, while Todd Gervais capitalized on a scoring opportunity from Kelsey Kenler.

With the game all tied up the teams headed into overtime. The extra minutes of play didn’t see either team come ahead and the teams headed into a second overtime.

As the two teams battled it out the Rockets’ Koltyn Miller found a hole and earned the winning goal off a pass

by Ryan Yates to win the second game of the series.

The final teams will battle on Thursday, March 22, in Carnduff at 8 p.m.

Red Coat Rebels win bronze at Sask. Cup II The Red Coat Rebels, coached by Mickey Adams and Asst. Coach, Blake Slykhuis, attended the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association (SVA) “Sask. Cup II” in Lloydminster the weekend of March 17-18. The Rebels played against the best 18U teams in the province and finished with a very respectable third place, bronze medal in Division One. After a slow start on Saturday, the Rebels fin-

ished third in their pool and so, on day two, it was “do or die” for the Rebels. The team battled their way into the semifinal where they came up against the “Saskatchewan Stealth” (ranked #2 in the province). After a hard fought struggle the Rebels fell short and went to the Bronze medal match where they came up against a team from Rose Valley. The teams were very evenly matched and the Rebels

played well to win this intense, exciting match in three sets.

The Rebels coaching staff will continue to hone the Rebels’ skills in preparation for the next competition at Sask. Cup III in Regina April 7/8.

The Rebels appreciate all the fans for making the trip with us on the bus to Lloydminster.

It was great to always have a ‘sea of red’ cheering on our team at all our matches.

The Southeast Vipers 14U team participated in a six-team tournament hosted in Kipling on Saturday, March 17. The girls battled the host team in the final and came out on top. The Vipers is made up of youth from Carnduff, Estevan, Lampman, Stoughton, Arcola, and Carlyle. They compete this weekend in Regina at Sask Cup 3 and are hoping to maintain or better their fourth place finishes at the last two Sask Cups before heading to Provincials in April.

Beginning grass dancer Kenson Standingready (pictured) says simply: “I love pow wow!” Kenson is one of a group of young dancers who are part of the newly-formed White Bear Dance Troupe. The group is open to aspiring dancers “from walking to teenagers,” says Dorothy Joyea. “We meet at the White Bear Community Centre, Thursdays at 4:30 and we welcome any young person who is interested in learning our traditional dances. It’s open to any child and we only ask that a parent comes with the child.”

For the love of the game: McNair to mentor aspiring umpires at Carlyle clinic Lynne Bell

Eighteen-year-old Shelbey McNair has officiated at both provincially- and nationallyranked baseball tournaments - all before she graduated from high school. McNair’s next goal is to officiate internationally, but in the meantime, aspiring umpires of all levels can be mentored by McNair and Moose Jaw’s Brendan Moat at a day-long Level One clinic at the Carlyle Elementary School library, Sunday, April 8, starting at 8 a.m.

“I started out as a ball player,” says McNair. “Becoming an umpire was just me taking another step, learning more about the game and loving it more.”

“One of my dreams is to someday go to the Olympics,” she adds.

“I knew early on that I probably wouldn’t get there as a (ball) player, but in 10 years, I just might get there as an

I’ve travelled, I’ve met great people and it’s all while doing something I love.”

“So I’d like to help other people become umpires if that’s something they’d like to do or even just try.”

McNair credits Carlyle’s Bill Wyatt as one of the people who helped with her development as an umpire..

“Our clinic takes kids as young as age 12 up to adults of any age,” she says. “Billy received props from Saskatchewan’s head umpire, Moose Gibson at meetings in Saskatoon and Regina - for his hard work and success developing young umpires in

this area.”

“Our clinic in Carlyle reflects that,” adds McNair. “It’s free of charge if you’re from our local area and you want to ump in Carlyle. For people travelling from further away who won’t be officiating in our local area, the charge for the Level One Clinic is $87.”

“Carlyle’s program also supplies a community pool of equipment once an umpire actually starts working at games,” says McNair. “That includes uniforms, plate gear, clickers, masks and chest and leg protectors.

It’s shared equipment, so that allows someone to umpire without a big outlay of cash.”

“If you come to the clinic, you get insurance and you actually achieve

the ability to officiate.

To start umpiring in our area, come to a clinic and we’ll get you all set up for the season.”

McNair’s upcoming umping duties include officiating in August at the Women’s Western Finals in Unity, Sask. but currently, she’s looking forward to assisting aspiring officials.

“We’ve got clinics planned in Carlyle, Moosomin, Estevan and Ochapawace,” says McNair.

“There’s no need to pre-register,” she adds.

“Just bring lunch, indoor running shoes and a good attitude!”

“We’ll do the rest.”

Oh boy – I forgot about the Sunday Breakfast last week! Missing to mention the total – unforgivable! There was just too much stuff going on. At least that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. On Sunday, March 11 had Kitchen Group # 1 serving up 48 breakfasts. This past Sunday, March 18 it was Kitchen

Group # 2 serving up 51 breakfasts. Only one more breakfast left for this year’s challenge – March 25 with Kitchen Group # 3 at the helm – make sure you come out for the Last Breakfast and help raise that total. Guest with Ben and Marcelle Peterson over the weekend of March 10 was their son Tracy Peterson (Calgary). They also had other family and friends joining them over the weekend.

I notice an obituary on the Leader Post on Mar. 13 obituary page site for Norman Jorgensen, late of Whitewood, Broadview and Wolseley Nursing Home. He had passed away Mar. 10 at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 94 years. Norman was predeceased by his wife Ann in 2010, two brothers and seven sisters. He was the last surviving member of the Jorgensen clan originally of Alida. He is survived by his two sons

Dennis and Robert and their families. At his request cremation has taken place and his ashes will be laid to rest beside his wife at a later date.

On Mar. 15 Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan travelled to Weyburn where Ainsley competed in a dance competition and her group placed third.

Then on Mar. 17 they returned to Weyburn where the dance competition carried on. Following the dance on Saturday they travelled on to Regina to spend a day in the city returning home on Sunday.

did some snowmobiling during the forenoon and into the afternoon until they loaded up their machines and headed back to Estevan.

Michele Anderson and son Oliver (Carlyle) spent a couple of days visiting with her parents Don and Shelley Boutin, and visited with other friends at the Saturday breakfast.

The Women’s Worlds Curling is being held this coming week in North Bay, Ontario. I was able to watch a couple of their games where Canada curled winning both of their games – a great beginning to a week of curling. Go Canada Go. This coming weekend it is the last chance for you to enjoy a game or two of curling before the ice plant is turned off for the season. The Alida Curling Club will host a oneday funspiel at the rink on Mar. 24, featuring six-end games. See you there – Enjoy the day.

Also come enjoy some skating while the ice is still good.

Circle of Friends this week featured the pets of our lives. Many had intelligent dogs. Jessie and her sisters dressed their pets in doll clothes for their “babies”. Mary Thiessens dad brought home a baby owl which lived with them until it grew up. Mary also led a Hymn sing on Sunday.

He is recovering well from a stroke 2 1/1 years ago, at the age of 54. Leanne Jackson visited Alice Chaput. Jean Vreys visitors included Ed, Clarissa and Aurel Martel, Ken and Anne Turpie. Brenda Dayman and Linda Mulligan visited Freda Longman. Joe and Shirley, Blaise and Theresa Lamontagne visited the Wawota ladies.

Exactly 43 years since he started his banking career, Gord Paulley will step down from what his boss, Eric Gavie of Estevan calls: “Mr. CIBC in Carlyle.”

Paulley’s final full day at the branch will be July 2, 2018 and he plans to travel more, golf more and subject to the approval of CIBC, stay on as a mentor to his predecessor for 10 hours a week. el more and golf more.”

president of that organization,” he says. “I was secretary of the Carlyle Golf Club for 15 years and I was a Cougars board member for 25 years, so Carlyle is definitely home.”

“Gord’s retirement is our loss but is welldeserved,” says Gavie. “I invite you all to join me in showing ‘Mr. CIBC in Carlyle’ our tremendous appreciation for 43 years of service at CIBC.”

“But it’s satisfying for me to help my clients.” “ Getting to really know people has meant that I’m now starting to have third- and fourthgenerations of families placing their trust in me,” he adds.

Exactly 43 years after he started his banking career, Gord Paulley - whom his boss calls ‘Mr. CIBC in Carlyle’ will retire from his position at the bank on July 2, 2018.

Paulley’s career accomplishments include multiple CIBC Quarterly Achiever Awards. He was named the bank’s Annual Achiever twice and in 1997 was recognized for his “outstanding contribution to the organization” with the Chairman’s Award.

The CIBC’s Eric Gavie of Estevan - Paulley’s boss - says: “Gord has contributed tremendously to the SouthSask Distrct and CIBC as a whole and will be greatly missed.”

“I will miss my clients every day,” says Paulley. “But it’s time.”

Paulley - who grew up in Yorkton - started his career with CIBC in Fort Qu’ Appelle as a trainee rep, the day after he graduated from high school.

“I was strong in math,” he says. “So I

thought banking might be a good fit for me. I was so thrilled with my first paycheque that I secretly vowed to continue my career with the bank.”

A series of quick promotions followed. In 1976, Paulley became a discount clerk in Norquay and became the branch accountant in Bengough a year later.

Paulley’s boss Gavie says: “This young man’s energy and passion couldn’t keep him at one branch for long, so he was ready to relocate again by 1978 and this posting took him to the Redvers Branch as a credit officer.”

In 1981, Paulley secured his first branch manager role in Rouleau, followed by a posting in Kincaid.

In 1986, Paulley came to Carlyle as branch manager and in 2001, he was promoted to financial advisor at the branch, a role in which he takes great pride.

“The (financial) advisor role is a very heavy post,” says Paulley. “I’m confident CIBC will find a good replacement for our clients and with the
