Homespun fever is in the air Carlyle’s 32nd annual Homespun Craft Show & Sale, “The Biggest Little Craft Show in Saskatchewan,” will once again be filling the Carlyle Sports Arena.

Over 60 jury-selected vendors will be in attendance on Saturday, Sept.

15, and Sunday, Sept.

16, which will encompass a great selection of items from specialty foods to wooden board games and everything in between.

There will be a variety of fantastic vendors chosen by the Homespun committee including new vendors and returning favourites.

On Sept. 15 the day will begin at 10 a.m. and will run until 7 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 16 doors open at 10 a.m. and will be open until 4 p.m.

There will be late night shopping on Saturday at the arena, in which draws for $100 Vendor Bucks Draws will be held at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Saturday also boasts a pancake breakfast hosted at the Legion, just northwest of the rink from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. The delicious Supper in the Field, which will be held in the arena again this year, will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Both days the event is hosted at the Carlyle Sports Arena and admission is $5 and free for kids 12-years and under.

In addition to the vendors found at the rink, the 16th annual Quilt Show will be held at the Memorial Hall both days. Admission to the quilt show is $4 (12 & under free) and it will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Join the fun and action at the Bowan Rekken Memorial Moto-X Track Race on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pause for Reflection A 14th Century Flemish mystic taught: “those who do not give praise here on earth shall be mute for all eternity.” John of Ruusbroec I discovered initiative early in life, about the time I realized the family could use my help, and I picked up a broom and swept the kitchen floor after supper. Mind you I got into trouble with an older brother because he did not want any additions to our household duties.

But my mother, we called her that out of respect, had a way of rewarding initiative.

Sometimes we heard her bragging about us. That was very effective. I continued this new behaviour, like bringing out sausages and buns for visiting neighbours who were playing cards.

Recalling these childhood memories leads me to the question: how does God encourage us and praise us for our good deeds? Scripture gives us some hints.

Then there is the promise that if we give so much as a drink of water in Jesus’ name, we shall not lose our reward (Matthew 10:42). And there is the praise we all want to hear at the end of our stewardship journey: “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the Joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:23).

In his book Well Done: Good and Faithful Servant, Steven J. Campbell talks about the Lord’s invitation to go into the harvest, which is ripe for the picking.

Great hope comes with great sacrifice. Jesus endured the cross for the glory that was to follow, glory that he wants to share with us: “enter into the joy of your Lord”.

“We have another role in sharing praise that leads to encouragement. Thomas Aquinas once suggested that it’s a sin to not give a compliment to someone when it’s deserved because by withholding our praise we’re depriving that person of the food that he or she needs to live on. He’s right. Perhaps it’s not a sin to withhold a compliment but it’s a sad impoverishment, both for the person deserving the compliment and for the one withholding it” (“The Power of a Compliment”, Father Ron Rolheiser).

Father Rolheiser goes on to explain that there is a moral imperative to pay that compliment. “Love requires it. Refusing to admire when someone or something merits praise is, as Thomas Aquinas submits, a negligence, a fault, a selfishness, a pet-

tiness, and a lack of maturity. Conversely, paying a compliment when one is due is a virtue and a sign of maturity.”

In “When We Don’t Understand” Linda Wegner says, “…it’s important to remember that a word of encouragement or a deed of kindness can minister to someone else in ways we could not have imagined.”

As I reflect on the end of life’s journey that many Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) or older face, and as I reflect on the natural decay of our physical strength, I find the greatest consolation in 2 Corinthians 4:17: “…for our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

“Let not your hearts be troubled… I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:1-2).

The power of encouragement

By Linda Wegner These past several weeks I’ve been cleaning out filing cabinet drawers; with few exceptions, they contain material about activities I’ve been involved in, stories I’ve written for various publications and, of course, twenty years worth of weekly articles that have appeared in many of

these newspapers. This afternoon I picked up two tiny pieces written to two people who stood with me during one of the more difficult times of my life.

The first, consisting of just 50 words, was written to Coleen, a member of the team at the Alan Blair Cancer Clinic in Regina. I don’t

recall if she was a nurse but I recall how she lifted the darkness on a lot of days. Here’s part of what I wrote: “it’s amazing how a single ray of light can enter a room and dispel the darkness…How often you have been that ray of light.”

The next, a bit longer, consisted of sixtytwo words and was addressed to Joan: “I remember the first time I met you. You were Joan, the Social Worker. I knew it was your job to listen to hurting people, to assist where possible and to offer professional advice. But, over the months, I’ve come to know another Joan….

Thank you for going so far beyond your professional duty.”

Pain and woe are nothing new and all of us have or will have experienced the reality that life comes but also that life ends. What never ceases, though, is the need to encourage one another.

A friend passed away today. I’ll never have another chance to tell her how much I have appreciated her but I can encourage someone else.

Banning the use of chemicals

By Calvin Daniels When the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) released its proposed decision to phase out the outdoor use of clothianidin and thiamethoxam, two products used by canola growers to prevent damage caused by flea beetles, it caused more than a ripple of concern in the farm sector.

It is not of course the first time a much used chemical has later been banned from use, Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT, being perhaps the most obvious one.

It was discovered as an agent prior to 1900, and was made available to the public in the United States for use in 1945. It was, over time, found to be having an environmental impact on birds such as the bald eagle, and was eventually banned in the U.S. around 1973, when the courts made a final ruling on its ban.

Some might draw a rather straight parallel between DDT and neonics in the sense both are chemicals that research has suggested impacts species other than those its application seeks to control.

There have been a number of reports where neonics are being blamed, at least in part, for the sudden decline in some bee populations.

The canola sector is a key stakeholder in this debate as the chemicals are used for flea beetle control in the crop.

To their credit they want science to be at the heart of whatever decision is made.

“The canola industry continues to support PMRA’s science-based decision-making process. The canola industry relies on continued investment in agricultural innovation, which is facilitated by predictable and science-based regulatory approval processes,” noted a release at www.canolacouncil.org But therein lies the heart of the concern as well.

There have been bans made in Europe, but the U.S. does not seem headed down that path. It would seem reasonable that all regulatory bodies have access to the same pure science, which means interpretation, or the comfort level with the potential risk is what drives decisions.

“Grain farmers are concerned that the Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s (PMRA) re-evaluation process is focused on publishing proposed decisions as fast as possible. It appears that this speed limits their ability to ensure all relevant information is available and prevents them from engaging farmers so that we can fully understand the issues they raise, which would allow us to provide the PMRA with the information required to refine these decisions. GGC will be reviewing today’s decision on Clothianidin and Thiamethoxam and will provide further comment once that review is complete,” said Jeff Nielsen, President, Grain Growers of Canada in a statement at www.ggc-pgc.ca “Sustainable production and science-based decisions about risk are the foundation of our industry,” said Brian Innes, vice president of public affairs for the Canola Council of Canada again at www.canolacouncil.org. “(The recent) announcement is concerning because these products are very important for our growers, and without viable alternatives, the

ban will significantly impact the canola sector.”

It is the comfort zone of the risk involved here that seems key. There is risk in all things, from crossing the street to taking a shower. It understanding those risks and being comfortable the benefits outweigh them that is the key.

It may well be neonics offer more risk than their continued use is worth.

Then the question farmers face, and regulatory bodies won’t be answering, if what tool to control the pests are left to farmers?

“The proposed decisions are of concern for the canola industry as a ban will reduce yield and increase the risks faced by growers. A study published in 2017 based on European growers’ experience without these products showed that growers faced an increased risk of insect damage, had lower yields and, as a result, seeded less canola. With more than 22 million acres of canola in Canada in 2018, banning these plant protection tools would have a dramatic impact,” noted the release www.canolacouncil.org That would suggest limited options for control exist post ban, and that too presents its own risks.

Something needs to change at RM level

By Murray Mandryk One of the most bizarre reactions from Saskatchewan conservatives this summer was their cheering over new Premier Doug Ford reducing the size of Toronto city council.

Whether there are, indeed, too many Toronto councillors is tough for us to out here to determine.

But if one agrees solely based on Ford’s belief that voters have never said we need more politicians, this is a very inconsistent position for many.

Notwithstanding its purported belief in smaller government, it was the conservative-minded Saskatchewan Party government increased our legislature by three MLAs to 61 members prior to the 2016 election.

It’s also the belief of the Sask. Party government and its supporters that we don’t need to reduce local rural municipal government because things are just fine.

Suffice to say, there is a lot of inconsistency here … not to mention a little out-dated thinking.

For example, if the government is demanding more efficiency by reducing health governance and administration, shouldn’t the same thoughts be applied to RMs where a dwindling rural farm population makes the need for a council for every 36-square mile block rather out-dated.

Let’s accept, at least for the moment, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM’s) yet-to-be-substantiated argument that low-paid local reeves, councillors and RM administrators remain more efficient and less costly than a large county system like in Alberta.

And let’s further accept the more important argument that more rural reeves and councillors are actually what the people want.

But does that automatically mean we are getting the best possible representation at the rural municipal level right now?

Shouldn’t we at least consider ways of helping RM reeves and councillors do their jobs better?

Consider the biggest issues facing local rural politicians right now, issues like environmental regulations and rural crime.

It’s tough for politicians to effectively deal with these issues at any level, but the issues are even tougher when you represent a small jurisdiction of only a couple hundred people.

One thing that could benefit local, rural politicians is more training and guidance similar to what the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association provides. SUMA even makes available to them “summer school” classes on everything from media relations to conflict management.

As part-time politicians, one can see why RM representations would have neither the time nor inclination to partake in such training. After all, the day-to-day worry for many RMs is still graving and gravelling.

That said, things have become increasingly complex in local government administration, especially when it comes to conflict resolution for RMs butting up against urban settings.

This has long been an issue in RMs like Corman Park and Sherwood just outside of Saskatoon and Regina, respectively. The latter has had significant political upheaval over land development issues.

However, we are now seeing similar issues moving into other near-urban RMs, the most recent example being, McKillop where there’s a pitched battle between local farming interests and those of cottage owners on the east side of Last Mountain Lake.

After petitions to local RM council and the provincial government over democratic representation issues that will likely be settled in the courts, things have gotten even uglier this summer. It was learned last month that McKillop ratepayers will face huge tax increases of as much as 76 per cent over what many are claiming has been questionable RM spending.

So serious is the matter Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding has appointed Carol Ingham, a former public administrator, to “undertake a high level look into the general operations of the RM”.

Such issues are increasing at the RM level. At the very least, reeves and councillors need better tools to handle them.

Clearly, some things need to change at the rural municipal governance level.

Not Just for the Birds Lingering over a cup of coffee on the deck on a beautiful summer evening is a great way to enjoy the last few weeks of the season. Sometimes the only sound is the rustling of leaves against a gentle breeze or the natural music of the birds. I’m not a bird watcher but I do enjoy taking note of the ones that stop by our backyard.

My Outlook When I was a little girl my Shelley Luedtke family lived in a tiny Alberta town.

We had a large backyard, a lot of great climbing trees and the coolest swing set in town so our yard became the community playground.

One day when I was about 6, my friend Jimmy and I spotted a bird’s nest in one of the trees.

We climbed onto a low lying branch to get a closer look and inside were three colourful robin’s eggs.

We stared in awe at this sight and then, of course, couldn’t wait to run and tell all the other kids what we’d discovered.

Each day we would go and check out the nest and the eggs. I never saw a mother bird anywhere near it but I couldn’t get enough of looking at the eggs. It was so tempting to reach out and touch the beautiful blue orbs, but we didn’t. Or at least to my knowledge we didn’t. But one fateful day I headed out to check on the eggs and was stunned to see the nest was on the ground. It was a sad day as various kids came by to take a look at the fallen nest with only one egg still settled inside. We searched for the other eggs but didn’t find them.

The spot on the ground where the nest now lay seemed almost hallowed ground. No one knew quite what to do. It seemed wrong to leave the nest there but it was clear no one felt right about touching it either.

I can’t say for sure how many days passed before we went to look at the nest again but this time one of the friends brought his visiting cousin along.

The cousin came into the forest, leaned over the nest, grabbed the remaining egg and smashed it against the trunk of a tree. We were horrified.

never have turned into a robin, as we were hoping, but we felt that it was the visiting cousin’s fault and it was very upsetting. At this point we couldn’t just leave the nest on the ground so Jimmy picked it up and we all got a chance to hold it and take a closer look. I remember how tightly packed the nest seemed and it reminded me of the baskets we wove at school with paper, twine and yarn. They took so long to finish and we’d had so much help from our teacher. How was a bird able to make such a complicated item?

Birds are rather interesting creatures and there is much we could learn from them. For instance, we should all start the day with a song. Birds are hardwired to sing in the morning in response to the light.

Some of us might find it hard to do first thing--it might seem easier to groan (or croak), but a song of appreciation would truly be the best way to start the day.

And then…imagine for a moment, thinking like a bird, and finding, gathering and using only what we need each day. They don’t build bigger nests than necessary, and they don’t gather more food than what they require to feed their babies and themselves -- they do not waste anything. Oh, what we could learn from them.

But what I love most is the way birds build and protect their nests. They don’t look for fancy materials to create a home, but use whatever they can find so the nest will be strong, warm and safe--the most important things in a home. It is their job to protect what is inside the nest and this is our job too-no matter what stage of life we are in. Sometimes it’s not easy. Outside forces, like predators to birds, threaten to disrupt, and invade our nests. Just like the young cousin came into our forest and destroyed something precious to us, elements in the world are looking for a way into our nests. We need to protect those nests and the character of all those living inside.

Whether we have little chicks cuddled in the safety of our wings, growing birds learning to test their wings, or are empty-nesters, we will all fly higher and farther knowing we can return to the comfort and safety of our home from which another melody can welcome another day. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: The next step for your RRSP is . . .

You’re turning 71 by the end of 2018 and you know you have some important Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) decisions coming up. Let’s look at the best options for preserving your retirement income and your estate.

The background You established an RRSP back in the day and contributed to it for many years. Good for you – an RRSP is the best tax-saving, incomebuilding investment vehicle for most Canadians and is undoubtedly an important part of your retirement income. But, if you turn 71 this year, you are required by law to wind down your RRSP before 2019. You have three basic conversion options to choose from.

Cash out your plan Not a good choice – you’ll likely be taxed on the total amount right away at a high marginal rate.

Establish a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) RRIFs are very much like RRSPs with two exceptions: No further contributions are allowed once you’ve established a RRIF and you are required to withdraw a minimum amount each year.

The mandatory minimum RRIF withdrawal is 5.28% for a 71-year-old and increases as you get older.

There is no limit on the maximum amount you can withdraw although you won’t want to deplete your RRIF too soon.

If you find you don’t need all the withdrawn

funds, you can contribute your RRIF payouts to a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) or a non-registered investment account.

Purchase an annuity There are many types of annuities. Here are three: • A “life annuity” pays you a specified income, usually monthly, for the rest of your life.

• A “term certain annuity” guarantees payments until you turn 90.

• A “joint and last survivor annuity” will continue payments to your spouse after your death. But with this option, your monthly payments will be reduced because the benefits are paying for two lives not one.

Your spouse can receive the same amount you receive or a lesser amount of your

choice.

Faced with every good reason in the world to choke in the final round of the CP Canadian Open at the Wascana Golf Club in Regina, Henderson, the pride of Smiths Falls, Ont., showed her mettle by firing a sensational final-round seven-underpar 65 to win the title in a romp. She became the first Canadian woman to win the national open in 45 years (Jocelyn Bourassa did it in 1973).

The eyes of a nation have been on Henderson since she broke onto the pro golf scene in 2015 as a brash 17-year-old.

She won once in her first year on the LPGA tour, won her first major the following year and now has seven tour titles, one shy of the Canadian record held by Sandra Post. Her victory in Regina moved her to No. 8 in the world.

Visiting with Denis and Norma Lamontagne this past summer were Lea and Dennis Kushner of Swift Current, Michele and Mike , Sam and Jake Taillon of Calgary, Lisa Hrabarchuk, Paul, Evan, Mac and Ben Lamontagne, Taylor and Michael Kostyshyn of Brandon, Rennee Lamontagne and Emett David of Canmore, AB, Ana Augusta Fluery Curado and Tauffic Curado Mallard from Goiania, Brazil, Keith and Gaye Jane of Regina and Don Jane of Duncan, BC. Neil and Heather Birnie , Bob and Linda Birnie and Lyle and Gwen Birnie of Westlock, AB enjoyed a holiday to the East Coast.

They visited with family and friend in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

Marie Vail also enjoyed a two-week trip to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. She visited a grave in Halifax of a cousin who had drowned in the Titanic in 1912.

Stevan John Gould Stevan John Gould, late of Estevan SK, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2018 in the Regina Pasqua Hospital surrounded by his family at the age of 40 years.

Steven had struggled with kidney failure for years and had been receiving kidney dialysis. Funeral Service was held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 in the Manor Community Hall with Rev. Michelle Moore of�iciating.

Interment was held in Manor Cemetery.

Stevan is survived by his wife Shauna Bradley, daughters Samantha and Autumn, mother (Linda Gould), brother Trevor Gould (Jacquie), sister Crystal Gibson (Reid), numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father William (Ewart) Gould.

Arrangements in care of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services, Regina, SK (306-757-2327). If family and friends so desire, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation – Long term care in Estevan, SK. Stevan was born on March 29, 1978 in Regina SK. He was the oldest son of Ewart and Linda Gould.

Steven graduated from Carlyle High School and immediately began his cooking career at numerous restaurants throughout his life. Stevan married Shauna Bradley and had 2 beautiful daughters Samantha and Autumn. Stevan truly had a passion for both cooking as well as baking. Stevan took on the role of Santa Claus at numerous malls every Christmas season as he had such a love for Christmas as well as for children.

He will be forever remembered for his big smile and dimples. Stevan enjoyed spending time with daughters Samantha and Autumn and showed his unconditional love to them. He loved music, long drives, and his time at the farm growing up.

A special Thank you to all of the Staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for all of your care you gave to Stevan including the Dialysis nurses, as well as the Long term care nurses. Thank You as well to the Regina Pasqua Hospital ICU doctors and nurses for all the care you gave to him. Thank you to Rev. Michelle Moore for the beautiful service, the ladies in Manor that prepared the lunch, Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services for preparing and helping with organizing everything for the funeral, to Teresa Fox and Grace Rose for all of your help throughout it all with programs, organizing the lunch, and pictures. Thank you to everyone that offered a helping hand, to all that visited Stevan, and to all family and friends for joining us at the service.

We are honored to be surrounded by such a great community, family, and friends. Thank you to all.

Five semis were hauling wheat direct to the elevator, from ten or more combines and hoppers.

They were able to start at 9am, so were on the final corners in the heat.

SWF and SSGA urge hunters to “stay on track”

Extremely dry conditions exist in several areas of Saskatchewan.

As a result, there has arisen the potential risk for fires to start from the use of vehicles. In light of the numerous wildfiresthat occurred last year, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) and the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) are asking hunters to take extra precautions as the hunting season gets underway in the southern part of the province and other high risk areas “We know that the vast majority of hunters take every step to ensure that they leave nothing but footprints when they hunt. However, the recent warm weather and the ever-present possibilities of high winds provide the ideal conditions for uncontrolled wild fires.” says Darrell Crabbe Executive Director of the SWF. “We encourage all hunters to take extra precautions this hunting season with the in-
