Recommendations for first-time campers Are you taking your �irst steps into the world of tent camping? Here are a few tips that will help you ensure everything goes smoothly.

Get set up right • Inspect your gear before leaving home • Arrive at the campsite early so you have plenty of daylight during which to get set up • Choose where you pitch your tent carefully — don’t set up underneath a single tree, for example, as it can act as a natural lightening rod; at the same time, remember to choose a spot that has lots of shade in the morning • Remove any rocks and branches from the area before pitching your tent • Put a waterproof tarp underneath your tent for a little extra protection • Place some rocks on the tent’s stakes if the ground is moist • Pack an extra waterproof tarp — they’re always helpful on rainy days Avoid unnecessary problems • Wear light-coloured clothes to avoid attracting mosquitoes • Remember to pack at least two �lashlights and spare batteries, just in case • Keep the cooler and other stronger-smelling items (such as scented soaps) in the car, and don’t leave dirty laundry or garbage out in the open — the scent is likely to attract wild animals • Keep an eye on open �lames at all times and be sure that your cinders are no longer hot before going to bed or leaving the campsite

Be a good neighbour • Don’t take shortcuts across other campers’ sites • Don’t make unnecessary noise after the park’s curfew

• Keep your dog on a leash and pick up any of his or her droppings when necessary • Don’t leave any garbage on your campsite when you strike your tent and head out

Big game draw Seeing that it is May, I thought it would be a good time to do a column on Saskatchewan’s big game draw.

The province’s draw system dates back to 1958 when the province’s elk populations were under some pressure. Today, we have draws for moose, elk, pronghorn, and either sex and antlerless mule deer for Saskatchewan residents and whitetailed deer draws for Canadian residents.

As a result of more people applying, with only a limited number of tags available, it has been increasingly more dif�icult to be drawn. The number of applicants for the big game draw has experienced a steady

increase over the last several years. In 2017, there were over 51,000 hunters who submitted more than 95,000 Saskatchewan resident applications for the big game draw compared to 42,500 applications in 2011. Moose was the most sought after species in 2017 with over 32,000 applications.

People often complain that they know someone who was drawn no less than �ive years after being drawn for the same species in the same zone the last time and they have been waiting for eight years to be drawn.

Remember, it is a lottery and it is just the luck of the draw. That’s no different than me complaining because I have not won Lotto Max in the last �ive years even though I play every Friday night. The computer system is not rigged, there is no favoritism and it is totally transparent and equitable.

For 2018, changes have been implement-

ed to address concerns about the increase in applications, including the creation of two new priority pools.

The D Pool will be added to the bottom of the priority pool sequence.

This addition will extend the amount of time it takes to get into Super A by one year. All successfully drawn applicants in 2018 will be placed in the new D pool for the 2019 draw.

The other added priority pool is the Legacy Pool. This pool is reserved for hunters who have applied and maintained Super A status for 10 consecutive years for the same species. It is designed to provide long-term applicants an increased opportunity to be drawn. This pool is now the highest priority pool a hunter can obtain, but remember the majority of licences will still be allocated to applicants in the Super A pool.

In addition to the cre-

ation of these new pools, hunters who are awarded three or more draw licences in a year will now have the option to decline licences and have pool status reinstated for that species. Applicants who are successful for three draw species may decline one, four draw species may decline up to two, and �ive draw species may decline up to three.

Q: Why are landowners not given priority in the draw?

The simplest answer is that it would not be fair.

This would mean if you lived in Zone 15 as a landowner and received additional opportunities, then the same would be for those who live in zones with antelope, moose or elk in northern zones.

Pretty soon it would become a system where only landowners could hunt only what is in and around where they live.

The current draw system is the fairest one available

to all hunters.

Q: I am 11 years old, but by the time the draw season opens I will be 12.

Can I apply for the draw?

You have to be at least 12 years old on the day you apply for the big game draw.

Q: I am not that tech savvy with computers … can I come into a �ield of�ice and do the draw application on paper there?

No, all applications must be done online and all applicants must have a valid HAL number when applying. However, you are still able to stop at any �ield of�ice and ministry staff can help you complete your application online.

Q: I was drawn and have to start a new job out-of-province. Can I forfeit my licence and maintain my pool status?

No, refunds and pool status reinstatements are only given for medical and emergency situations where the applicant

cannot hunt. Regardless if you fail to purchase your draw licence, you will automatically be dropped down to D pool for the following year.

Remember that the draw opens May 1 and closes at midnight on May 25. No changes to your application can be made after this date. It costs $6.00 to apply and can be paid with a MasterCard or Visa.

Golfing equipment for young beginners You don’t need to spend a for tune on equipment for a young beginner golfer.

If your children express an interest in learning how to play golf, it is possible to start them off on the right foot with equipment that not only meets their needs but that also �its into the family’s budget. There is no point in spending a fortune if your little Tiger Woods decides to give up after a few rounds!

Opt for second hand clubs to start with. It is not necessary to buy children a complete set; they can easily manage with eight clubs (3, 5, 7, and 9 irons, a pitching wedge, a driver, a fairway wood or hybrid, and a putter). Be sure to check the condition of the grips and replace them if necessary.

It is also possible to buy a used bag, but be sure to choose one that is not too heavy and that is equipped with a tripod stand. Good deals can usually be found on last year’s inventory of shoes and clothing.

Balls, tees, and a glove complete a child’s �irst set of golf gear.

New players should always take a few lessons from a professional before tackling a �irst round of golf. The correct techniques they’ll learn will always stand them in good stead. After a few sessions on the practice range, a par-3 course is ideal to start with, combined with regular visits to the driving range to perfect their swings.

As soon as their level of play improves, beginners will be able to use a full set of clubs and play on a regular golf course.

Seven tips for keeping mosquitoes at bay when you’re camping We all love camping. Mosquitoes, not so much! Do you think that you can’t have one without the other?

Well, these tips will help you avoid being attacked by a horde of bloodthirsty insects so that you can �inally enjoy your time in the great outdoors.

1. Be sure there aren’t any holes or tears in your tent’s fabric, and keep it zipped shut at all times.

2. Choose a campsite surrounded by deciduous trees rather than conifers.

3. Pitch your tent in an area that has a nice breeze and is far away from any standing water, electrical posts and toilets.

4. Avoid entering and leaving your tent frequently and don’t leave its �lap unzipped unless it’s really necessary — you should also take off your shoes and turn off your �lashlight before entering the tent (you can place a tarp near the entrance for your shoes).

5. Light a �ire before the sun sets (the smoke will chase away the mosquitoes).

6. Arm yourself with a good bug spray or other insect-repellent product.

7. Wear long shirts and pants in light colours.

The hunt continues for an elusive rare orchid Regina, SK – May 15th, 2017 – As Nature Saskatchewan’s Rare Plant Rescue (RPR) program gets ready for another �ield season, the crew is once again on the hunt for one of the province’s most elusive plants. The Small White Lady’s-slipper is likely one of the rarest plants in the province, with a provincial status of “possibly extirpated”, meaning provincially extinct. Within Canada this species is listed as Endangered and can still be found in small pockets throughout Manitoba and Ontario.

For the second year, RPR will be assisting the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre in their surveys to hopefully locate this rare orchid in the province.

“These surveys are a bit of a treasure hunt,” explains Ashley Vass, Program Coordinator for RPR, “not only is this species considered extremely rare within Canada, but in Saskatchewan the last time it was seen was in 1895 - over a century ago. We are following clues such as ‘near a spring by Indian Head’ to relocate the species.”

On the Canadian prairies, this small perennial orchid averages around 15 cm tall. Flowering from May to June, the Small White Lady’s-slipper relies on insects for pollination, with its �lower shape facilitating crosspollination. A few leaves sheath a single stem, and its single �lower has a small modi�ied petal pouch resembling a slipper. The pouch is about 2-3 cm long, and is white with occasional purple veining or speckling.

A more common orchid, Yellow Lady’s-slipper, has a yellow �lower with a similar shape and will readily hybridize with this species to produce a cream coloured slipper. The Yellow Lady’s-slipper and the hybrid can be distinguished from the Small White Lady’s-slipper by their colour and larger size.

“Along with the Qu’Appelle Valley, southeastern Saskatchewan is an area of interest,” says Vass. Suitable habitat for Small White Lady’s-slipper includes remnant moist native prairie, prairie sedge fens, and openings in woodlands. As this type of habitat has been greatly reduced in Canada over the past century, Small White Lady’s-slipper often grows in conjunction with other rare or at risk species and its presence is an indicator of intact native prairie health.

Promoting safe boating practices to Canadians

North American Safe Boating Awareness Week will take place across Canada from May 19th to May 25th, 2018. The purpose of this initiative, managed by the CSBC (Canadian Safe Boating Council) and its partners, is to promote safe and responsible boating practices to the estimated 15 million recreational boaters in Canada.

Although boating related fatalities have trended downwards in past years, there continues to be an average of over 100 boating related deaths annually in Canadian waters. With people gearing-up to launch their boats after a long winter slumber, the goal of the week is to continue to bring those numbers down by ensuring that Canadians who head out

in any type of boat have the appropriate knowledge to help them have a safe day on the water.

The timing of the week, starting on the May long weekend, is perfectly aligned with the unof�icial start of summer and a time when many boating fatalities occur.

There are �ive key boating safety behaviours to be delivered, all directed towards the most common boating related accidents. They include: 1. Wear a Lifejacket 2. Boat Sober 3. Take a Boating Course 4. Be Prepared – Both You and Your Vessel 5. Be Aware of the Risks of Cold Water Immersion

To help media in communicating safe boating messages, short stories to be used as discrete articles and 30-second audio and video PSAs are available.

They are easy to download and free of charge on the www.csbc.ca website.

Beta quality is also available upon request.

In addition to offering media ready materials, a number of activities are taking place during this year’s campaign.

Launches In Canada, there will be �ive launches for media, public and boating safety educators alike.

On May 17th, Toronto, Dartmouth and Winnipeg will kick of North Ameri-

can Safe Boating Awareness Week. Vancouver will launch Safe Boating Awareness Week on May 19th and Saskatoon on May 22nd.

2018 Focus The impending legalization of cannabis along with the rise in prescription narcotic use is causing signi�icant additional concern for boating safety advocate groups, enforcement agencies and �irst responders alike. Alcohol alone has long been proven to be a contributing factor in 40% of boating fatalities across Canada but the legalization of recreational cannabis has the potential to signi�icantly increase

this statistic. In response to this, at each of our launches, there will be media conferences put on by local and regional police to discuss emphasize the importance of not consuming ANY alcohol or drugs either before or while boating.

The Safe Boating Awareness Week initiative is promoted by the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC), a registered charity, with support from its members, partners and Transport Canada Of�ice of Boating.

Fire ban in place for Crown land, most provincial parks south of Churchill River The Ministry of Environment has issued a ban on all open �ires south of the Churchill River to the U.S. border effective immediately, due to dry conditions.

The ban applies to all provincial Crown land, burn noti�ication areas, and provincial parks and recreation sites within the ban area. This includes Clearwater River and Lac La Ronge provincial parks, but excludes Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, where �ire hazards are lower. A complete

Municipalities, regional and national parks may also ban open burning in their areas of responsibility. You can view a list of municipal �ire bans and check with your local authority to find out if there are burning restrictions in place for your area or where you plan to travel.

The �ire ban is effective immediately and will stay in place until the Ministry of Environment rescinds the order.
