Five things to consider when hiking with your baby Do you like to walk the trails with your baby?

Here are �ive important things to consider before you leave for your hike.

1. Your carrying system A baby sling is recommended for infants. As soon as your child can sit up and support his or her own head (typically around six or seven months old), you can move on to a baby carrier speci�ically designed for hiking (these can typically be adjusted to grow with your baby). When shopping for a baby carrier, ask for recommendations and try before you buy to ensure that you choose a model that’s comfortable for both you and your baby.

2. The type of hike It can be dif�icult to keep your balance while carrying a baby who can move unexpectedly. When hiking with your baby, it’s better to avoid risky or dif�icult trails. What’s more, if you’re carrying your baby in front of you, you may have dif�iculty seeing where you’re placing your feet. Paths that have many obstacles should therefore be avoided. Similarly, you shouldn’t take a baby that’s less than a year old above an altitude of 1,500 metres.

3. The weather Avoid going out if the weather is too cold or too hot. Also consider only hiking in the morning to protect your child from the worst of the heat and sun in the middle of the day (and be sure to dress your child in long sleeves and pants).

4. Your baby’s schedule If you child has regular eating and sleeping patterns, be sure to plan your hike accordingly.

5. Essential accessories First aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat (remember there might be wind so �ind a hat that can be secured on your head), mosquito repellent, and an emergency poncho are just a few of the items you’ll need. Don’t forget a paci�ier or some other kind of toy.

A pocket mirror can also be helpful for keeping an eye on your baby.

Finally, be sure to take regular breaks. Rest for at least ten minutes every hour so your baby can stretch his or her arms and legs. Take longer and more frequent breaks as soon as you’re higher than 1,000 metres (important to prevent ear infections).

The dangers of cold water

The arrival of spring breezes and warmer temperatures is long awaited for boaters who have bided their time patiently through the long months of winter to get back out on the water in their power boats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.

The Canadian Safe Boating Council and its many partners would like at this time to remind boaters of the dangers of cold water immersion. “Canadian waters are usually cold year round, coast to coast to coast, so we need to always be prepared and that means wearing your lifejacket when you are on the water” says John Gullick, Chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council.

While never planned, incidents happen more frequently that anyone can imagine.

It starts with a cold shock; the gasp that can be deadly if the person’s head is underwater. It’s followed by approximately a minute of hyperventilation.

During this period, many people panic thinking that hypothermia is imminent, and they drown. The main thing to remember is that, even in ice cold water, it takes at least 30 minutes for an adult to become even mildly hypothermic! After about a minute, breathing returns to near normal and it’s during the next 10 to 15 minutes, attempts to self-rescue are most important. As this time elapses, the nerves and muscles in the arms and legs cool to the point where they can’t keep the person a�loat any longer. At this point, the person’s survival is dependent on their lifejacket or PFD to keep them a�loat and their airway clear. It will take approximately one hour before the person loses consciousness due to hypothermia.

Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, Professor of Thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba has encapsulated this one minute of hyperventilation, 10 minutes of meaningful movement and 1 hour of consciousness as the “1-10-1 Principle”.

Having a way to climb back into the boat without assistance is the most effective plan for self-rescue. If this is impossible as the boat has overturned, getting as much of the person’s body out of the water by climbing onto the overturned hull (or anything else that’s �loating such as a cooler) will reduce the rate of cooling.

Should there be no means to get out of the water, the best approach is to stay very still and adopt the H-E-L-P (Heat Escape Lessening Position) Position. If alone, the person should bring their knees up as close to their torso as possible and cross their arms over their chest. This will help protect vital organs.

If with others, huddle together interlocking arms and legs pressing torsos together to preserve heat.

The best approach, however, is taking preventative measures by dressing for the water temperature rather than the air. Thermal protective clothing, worn in layers, is extremely effective at staving off or at least delaying the onset of hypothermia until help arrives.

Cardinals inducted into Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame The Carlyle Cardinals Baseball Team, Carlyle, Saskatchewan will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, Team Category, Saturday, August 18, 2018, in Battleford, Saskatchewan.

As reported in the Carlyle Herald in 1902, baseball was �irst recorded in Carlyle in 1902. The team name, the Carlyle Lakers, participated in various leagues including the Moose Mountain League during the 1930s. A story from 1915 states the team travelled all night through wet and muddy conditions and made it on time to compete at 10 o’clock in the morning.

Baseball in Carlyle ceased during WWI and WWII as few men remained in the area for a ball team, but, in 1948 and continuing through 1979, baseball was again providing great baseball to the fans all around the area.

Some of the highlights of that era include: 1959- First recording of a double header baseball game.

1959- Hosted an International Baseball Tournament.

1963- Hosted a game between Carlyle and Satchel Paige and his All Stars.

1971- League Champions.

1974- League Champions advancing to the Provincial playoffs.

In 1981, Carlyle entered the South East Saskatchewan League under the name Carlyle Astros, with two [2] teams from Carlyle entering the 1983 season. The Astros continued as a team until the late 1980s where their home games were played in Carlyle at Lions Park. The current Carlyle Cardinals baseball team was formed in 1993 and currently playing in the ten [10] team Saskota Baseball League, with the most successful years being from 1997 to the present.

-1997,1998,1999, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016Saskota League Champions - 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2016-Provincial Champions - 2016-Saskatchewan Senior Baseball Team of the Year Award.

There have been many players, coaches and managers involved with the Cardinals, Lakers and Astros throughout history. The commitment and dedication to the game has been a major part of their success.

Many years the team would spend �ive to six nights a week practicing, playing and completing diamond maintenance.

Five tips for a great start to your golf season Are you ready to start your golf season? In order to be absolutely certain — and not forget anything — follow these five tips.

1. CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT Are the grips, shafts or heads of your clubs rusty or damaged in any way? If so, clean them with a suitable product or have them repaired. This is also the time to decide if you should replace some of your clubs.

2. CHECK YOUR ACCESSORIES Check your inventory of accessories: balls, tees, markers, etc. Do you have enough?

What about your water bottle and your bag? In short, make sure you have all the necessary accessories to ensure that your first round of golf is as enjoyable as possible.

3. RENEW YOUR GOLFING WARDROBE Think comfort; you’ll want to have clothes that allow your skin to breathe and that allow you to move freely. This is also a great opportunity to change your hat, gloves and shoes if they’re worn out.

Now all you have to do is renew your membership at your favourite golf club. Here’s hoping you have a great start to the season!

4. TAKE SOME LESSONS Review your knowledge and basic techniques. However experienced you are, a few sessions with a coach can make all the difference.

5. PRACTICE Thinking about starting your season off with a game? Planning a few practice sessions on a driving range is probably a better idea. Your perfect swing will soon come back if you exercise and strengthen your muscles gradually.

This summer, soak up some culture!

This year, why not take advantage of the summer season to learn more about local history, discover another culture’s traditional art forms or enjoy some live music? In short, soak up some culture! Interested?

Here are seven fun ways to add some culture to your life this summer: 1. Visit a museum: your local museums and interpretive centres offer exhibits and activities focusing on nature, history, science, technology, and transportation. They’re great choices if you’re passionate about any of these topics or just curious to learn more.

2. Attend a festival: the warm months are festival season. Festivals are often held to showcase different kinds of music, different styles of dance from around the world and even circus acts.

3. See a play: there’s nothing like a summer play.

Bicycle Safety Week 2018

SGI (Saskatchewan Government Insurance) has declared the week of May 13-19, 2018 as “Bicycle Safety Week” in Saskatchewan. The objective of Bicycle Safety Week is to help Saskatchewan communities encourage safe cycling and prevent bicycle-related injuries.

Between 2004 and 2013, 204 children between the ages of 1 and 9 years were hospitalized due to cyclingrelated injuries. The majority of hospitalizations were due to upper and lower extremity fractures, followed by traumatic brain injuries (e.g., concussions and internal head injuries).

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute supports local groups, communities, schools, and individuals to plan and promote activities during Bicycle Safety Week.

The Prevention Institute’s theme for this year is ‘Build Safe Bikers’ and has provided over 5000 free resource bags to participants registered in Bicycle Safety Week.

Throughout May and June, registered participants across the province are sharing bicycle safety information, engaging local partners like RCMP and Fire in organizing community events such as bicycle safety
