Red Market Barn opens for the season

Harold and Brenda Johnson have put in a lot of work each year and the Red Market Barn continues to be a staple of the southeast.

Southern Country had people up and dancing, sitting and tapping their toes, and/or singing along to the music at the Red Market Barn.

The Red Market Barn is back for another season. It’s first day was Sunday, May 20. Many people put it on their May long bucket list and were out to enjoy music, food, and shopping.

By Kelly Running The Red Market Barn is a staple in southeast Saskatchewan. Located 2 km north of Kenosee Lake it is a popular Sunday outing, which involves food, music, and vendors promoting a wide variety of products.

Harold and Brenda Johnson have put in a lot of work over the past �ive years and continue to host the ever popular Sunday outing.

The loft of the barn this year commemorates the passing of Cheryl Winkler – she had operated Moose Mountain Recoup and Release Wildlife Rehabilitation – and used to sell feather paintings to help fund the wildlife rescue. Now, where her art was once displayed, a memorial plaque is prominently displayed.

They are working to raise money in order to purchase a bench in the Moose Mountain Provincial Park in Winkler’s honour.

The vendors at the Red Market Barn came in from different parts of Saskatchewan with a myriad of items for sale. This included handcrafted items – big and small, food items, clothing, and the Arcola Girl Guides were even selling cookies – raising funds for the upcoming year of activities.

Unlike most May long weekends, the weather was sunny and although the wind picked up a little bit in the afternoon, it was a beautiful day to spend outside with a cold beverage seeing the unique items Saskatchewan people are making.

The yard was full all day and even calling ahead to let Brenda know they were coming was a group from Estevan out for a tour on their motorbikes.

The kick off to the season at the Red Market Barn was a hit.

The barn is open June 3, June 24, and then every Sunday throughout the summer from July 1 to Sept. 2.

Vendors of varying kinds were able to showcase their products at the Red Market Barn on May 20.

Saskota Baseball League update

By Kelly Running The Carlyle Cardinals hosted the Southeast Fireballs in their home opener on Thursday, May 17.

In the action packed game, the Cardinals earned a win over the Fireballs with a 7-3 �inish.

Also on May 17 the Redvers A’s lost to the Oxbow Chiefs 5-11, while the Estevan Timber Wolves left the Arcola Threshers in the dust with a 26-9 win.

The Windthorst Pirates took down the Kenosee Cubs on May 18 with a 14-1 win.

Action on May 22 saw the Kipling Royals take

on the Arcola Threshers, losing 0-3. The Redvers A’s bested the Carnduff Astros 5-4. In a close battle the Oxbow Chiefs won against the Estevan Tower Wolves 6-5. While the Carlyle Cardinals took down the Windthorst Pirates 8-1.

Currently in the league the Oxbow Chiefs are sitting in �irst (as of Wednesday, May 23); the Carlyle Cardinals are second with two wins; Arcola Threshers, Estevan Tower Wolves, and the Windthorst Pirates are in third with two wins and a loss; the Carnduff Astros have a single loss; the Redvers A’s have one win and two

losses; while, the Kenosee Cubs, Kipling Royals, and Southeast Fireballs all have two losses.

You can never spend too much time on the practice range

The secret is in the shaft

Golfers often neglect to ask about types of shaft when purchasing golf clubs. While several different materials are available in stores, steel and graphite shafts are by far the most widespread.

First of all, golfers should be aware that the design and characteristics of a shaft can vary from one manu facturer to another. The choice of a shaft, whether �lexible or rigid, depends on your type of swing and will in�luence the trajectory and the length of your shots.

Heavier and less expensive than those made of graphite, steel shafts normally have a lower �lex, or kick point, which contributes to better stroke control. Renowned for their lightness, graphite shafts absorb vibrations more effectively. More and more golfers prefer to use graphite shafts for their drivers and fairway woods in order to optimize power. On the other hand, they are more likely to use steel shafts for their irons to increase precision. Because of their light weight, graphite shafts are better suited to women, older players, and those who have joint problems.

Whichever way you look at it, a practice session is never as much fun as a round of golf on your favourite course, especially with good company.

But more regular visits to the practice range are sure to have an impact on your score card.

Even though a lot of golfers are already in the habit of warming up with a basket of balls on the driving range, it is wise to structure this exercise so that it doesn’t turn into a race against the clock.

Golfers should try and think of these practice sessions as real golf

games. After about ten minutes of stretching, take a few minutes to practice swinging with your different clubs. After this, choose some targets on the practice range and change clubs with each swing. This will enable you to get in some practice with your woods, your long irons, and your short irons.

Don’t let the width and lack of obstacles on the driving range fool you.

Giving yourself some targets to aim for is important here, as it’s very easy to just hit the ball without having to worry about the

lake on the right, the trees to the left, or the bunker straight ahead.

At the end of the session, take about ten minutes to practice your precision shots with your wedges within a radius of 20 to 50 yards. You’ll also bene�it from practicing your putts over varying distances on the practice green before starting your round of golf. This will give you a better idea of the speed of the course’s greens.

With all those great practice shots fresh in your mind, you’ll be all set to start your round of golf.

Camping season: how to choose your campground Are you planning to spend the summer on a campground? To help you choose the right one, here are four important points to consider: 1. The grounds Do the grounds seem clean and safe? What will the surrounding area be like? Will it be in the middle of nowhere, or near important services and activities that interest you? Who will your neighbours be?

You’ll probably be looking for different campgrounds depending on whether you want absolute peace and quiet or more of an opportunity to socialize.

2. Campground features Water slides, beaches, tennis courts, playgrounds — what kinds of features does the campground offer?

Is there a restaurant on or near the grounds? And will you have access to the internet? If a member of your family has reduced mobility, ensure that the grounds can accommodate his or her needs. Do you like camping with your dog? Make sure the campsite allows four-legged guests, and check for any rules regarding pets.

3. Activities Dance night, bingo, karaoke, picnics — what kinds of activities are organized for the campers? Will you be able to participate for free? Are there any other attractions or activities near the campground (miniature golf, for example)?

4. Cost Costs vary from one campground to another. If you want to stick to your budget, be sure to check what is included in your campsite fees (internet, electricity, etc.).

Don’t hesitate to check online reviews for campgrounds that interest you in order to make the choice that’s right for you. Once your decision is made, be sure that you sign a detailed lease so there won’t be any surprises. Happy camping!

Gorgeously garnished salmon burgers Classic hamburgers are a summertime staple, but why not switch things up a bit next time you get the urge to �ire up the grill? This tasty salmon burger garnished with crispy toppings galore is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients (Makes 6 servings) For the patties: • 700 g (about 1.5 lbs.) fresh salmon, chopped • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh Italian parsley • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh dill • 2 green onions, sliced • Juice of 1 lemon

• 1 tbsp. mayonnaise • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs • 1 egg • Salt and pepper, to taste For the tartar sauce: • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1/2 cup relish • 1 tbsp. lemon juice • 1 tbsp. �inely diced cucumber • 1 tbsp. �inely diced sweet pickles • 1/2 tbsp. garlic powder • Salt and pepper, to taste For the burgers: • 1/2 red onion, sliced • 2 cups baby spinach • 6 hamburger buns Directions 1. Place onion slices in a bowl of cold water.

Set aside.

2. Mix together all the ingredients for the patties. Make four equalsized patties. Set aside.

3. Mix together all the ingredients for the tartar sauce.

4. On a preheated BBQ grill, cook salmon patties approximately 4 minutes each side. Toast buns on grill for last minute of cooking.

5. Remove onion slices from water and pat dry.

6. Assemble the burgers by placing a handful of baby spinach, a salmon patty, a spoonful of tartar sauce and a few onion slices on each bun.

Camping in the rain — are you prepared?

Mother Nature isn’t always on our side when it comes to camping. The key to having a great time despite the rain? Preparation!

What to bring First, check that your tent is in good repair, paying special attention to the seams. Pack a plastic tarp or canvas for extra shelter (a covered cooking area, for example) or to put under your tent for added protection from the elements. Once you’re at the site, choose as high a campsite as possible to make sure your space doesn’t �lood. You should also bring along plenty of plastic bags to store items you don’t want getting wet.

Protect yourself as well. Umbrellas, raincoats, boots, warm socks and �lip-�lops can all be useful!

How to have fun Bring whatever you think will keep you occupied while in the tent: travel versions of board games, playing cards, books, colouring books, tablets, etc. In addition to the games you bring, there will probably be a common area at your campground that may have a pool table or a foosball table.

To keep rainy day boredom at bay, make a list of interesting places near your camp before you leave.

Museums, movie theatres, bowling alleys, restaurants and trails (a walk in the rain can be charming!) are all great options. Finally, you can always take advantage of a rainy day to sleep in, clean your gear or do some laundry.

Don’t leave all your clothes in the tent. If water happens to get in, you’ll have nothing to wear but your backpack!

To enjoy a dry holiday, inspect your tent and be sure it’s waterproof before heading into the wild.

What should you eat when camping?

A hotdog roasted over the �ire is always delicious — except when you’ve eaten one eight times in the same week! Need suggestions to vary your camping menu? Follow this guide.

There are so many choices for breakfast: oatmeal, cereal, croissants, toast made over the �ire, fresh fruit, bacon and eggs, or crepes (you can make the dry mixture at home). There are also lots of meals you can start preparing well in advance. Marinated meat, frozen stews, pasta salads, bean salads and spice mixes can all be brought from home.

You can also make a vegetarian chili if you prepare the necessary ingredients beforehand. Cold cuts, hard-boiled eggs, cheese fondue and couscous are also great options for camping. Once you’re settled into your campsite, you can go out and get a rotisserie chicken from the market. You can even use leftovers for lunch or dinner by making sandwiches or a rice dish, for example.

One tip to simplify your meals: set your menu before you leave. You can get inspiration from food blogs that design simple and nutritious recipes that are perfect for camping trips.

The CP Women’s Open in Regina is seeking volunteers The LPGA is coming to Regina! The tournament committee is seeking volunteers for the CP Women’s Open at the Wascana Country Club in Regina, Sask.

The host committee for the upcoming LPGA CP Women’s Open at Regina’s Wascana Country Club is still searching for volunteers for the event. 1,200 volunteers are needed for the tournament that runs Aug. 20 -26. Most positions only require a 24-hour period. Positions include transportation, spectator services, marshals, and more. Anyone that does lend their time will be given a ground

Packing for a camping trip: seven things to consider When you’re going camping, preparation is essential. In order to not forget anything, draw up a list of everything you’ll need beforehand.

1. The campsite: tent, hammer, sleeping bags, pillows, mattresses, air pump, extra blankets, tarp, rope, a little broom, etc.

2. Safety: Flashlights and batteries, complete

�irst aid kit, sunscreen, pocket knife, whistle, etc.

3. Food: water bottle, cooking utensils, cutting board, can opener, pots, oven mitts, dish soap, portable stove, garbage bags, aluminum foil, etc.

4. Clothing: Raincoat, warm clothes, sandals, swimsuit, hiking boots, pants, sunglasses, hat, pyjamas, underwear, etc.

5. Hygiene: soap,

shampoo, toothbrush, deodorant, toilet paper, towels, clothespins, detergent, hairbrush, mirror, etc.

6. Camp�ire: newspaper, lighter, hatchet, folding chairs, etc.

7. Fun: guide books, games, books, sports equipment if you have any activities planned, etc.

The Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association (SATVA) hopes that all ATVers make plenty of great memories this year as they enjoy off-roading on some of the province’s diverse trails. While seeking out thrills and adventures, however, SATVA is asking all ATVers to make safety a priority.

During ATV Safety Week from June 2-9, SATVA is reminding riders to follow two important safety rules: Ride Safe. Ride Smart.

“When an ATVer rides safely and uses their head, they can ensure they get from Point A to Point B without any incidents,” says John Meed, General Manager of SATVA. “Offroading is one of the greatest summer activities and adopting safe practices will maximize your experience.”

One of the most important safety steps any ATVer can follow to Ride Smart is wearing a helmet that �its properly.

Ride Smart includes eye protection, gloves, ankle boots, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Before even hitting the ATV trail, you must also ensure you have the knowledge and make the proper preparations. Riders ages 12 to 15, or people who don’t have a driver’s license, must take an approved safety course or be supervised by someone who’s had a driver’s license for a year. Of course, all riders can bene�it from the training. Prior to ATVing, you should also designate an emergency contact and pack a cell phone or walkie talkie.

When you Ride Safe, it means that you don’t attempt tricky manoeuvers, you follow the speed limit and you avoid roads and streets when driving, except to cross the road or go around obstacles. Unless your ATV is designed for more than one passenger, you shouldn’t double up. Adding a passenger to a quad designed for one rider can change the dynamics of the machine,

especially when climbing or descending hills or when maneuvering around obstacles. The end result can be a roll over. And of course, safe riding also means not drinking and then riding.

Drinking reduces a rider’s reaction time and impairs their judgement – not to mention the fact operating an ATV on public or private property while impaired is illegal.

SATVA is kicking off ATV Safety Week on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cabela’s in Regina (4901 Gordon Road), where it will be showing off the latest ATVs and spreading knowledge about safe riding practices. It’s a great chance to learn essential ATV safety tips and �ind out how to get involved with Saskatchewan’s ATV community.

SATVA is also supporting the Bikin’ for Boobies event on June 9 in Saskatoon.

The event is a charity bike ride for breast cancer and includes quads and side by sides.
