IDEC Competition 2011 2-week Design Charette. KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa suffers from an HIV/AIDS epidemic. 15.8% of the population above the age of 2 is living with HIV and nearly 1/3 of all adults are estimated to be HIV positive, leaving 26% of children orphaned in KwaZulu-Natal. The design competition prompt was to design a solution that will improve the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Even though this was an interior design competition, we discovered that with a high rate of parental death, over 90% of students enrolled in school drop out after the age of 12 to take care of their family. Because of the high drop-out rate, children do not reach the level of school where they learn about HIV / AIDS, which contributes to the epidemic. So instead of designing a clinic, we designed a learning park, where the children could learn facts early to help prevent the epidemic.
