MISSION
Centered in Jesus Christ, Carmel Catholic is a college preparatory high school, empowering students to be servant leaders filled with zeal for faith and scholarship. Rooted in the charisms of the Order of Carmelites and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Catholic community embraces a tradition of dignity, diversity, and justice.
HISTORY
Founded in 1962, Carmel Catholic is jointly sponsored by the Order of Carmelites (O.Carm.) and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM). In 1960, the Archdiocese of Chicago invited these two religious communities to build a coinstitutional Catholic high school in Lake County. In September 1962, Carmel High School for Boys opened its doors to a freshmen class of 175 students. In September 1963, Carmel High School for Girls admitted students. In August 1988, the two schools merged and a separate corporation was established for the new co-educational school. For more than 50 years Carmel Catholic High School has been committed to providing a quality Catholic education and forming young men and women to make a positive impact in society.

As a school administrator, one always recognizes a thematic trend that permeates a school year. This school year has been no different; the feeling of gratitude has been ingrained in the hallways and classrooms of Carmel Catholic. As a school community, we have much to be proud of, including being recognized as a five-time National Blue Ribbon School–one of only two private schools in the nation to receive this award five times–stellar academics, incredible athletic accomplishments–including a state championship in girls’ basketball–and over 20,000 hours of Christian service by our students. Carmel Catholic students have made their mark.
We are grateful because we have persevered through some challenging times and become a better school. Through adversity, we have become stronger and continue to graduate leaders who have and will continue to make a positive change. We are grateful.
It is hard to describe the level of impact that all who have generously donated to support students at Carmel Catholic have made. If we did not have the generosity of those listed in this publication, Carmel Catholic’s mission would not exist. Each student experiences Christ’s love daily in our classrooms thanks to those who have given. Thank you for your investment in our students. STUDENTS ATTEND VOCATIONAL TRIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS
In mid-November,
Mr. Phil Donner and Fr. Christian Shiu accompanied two Carmel Catholic High School seniors to St. John Vianney Seminary on the campus of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, for a vocational “come and see” trip. While there, they were able to meet college seminarians in formation for the priesthood as well as fellow high school peers (more than 100 teens from 14 different dioceses), spend time in prayer, listen to talks, and tour the beautiful campus with recreation time and open gym in the mix.

CARMEL STUDENTS CAST THEIR VOTE
For the second time in his teaching career, Carmel Catholic High School Civics teacher Mr. Jack Waddle was beaming with pride as he escorted 21 seniors to the Lake County Central Permit Facility in Libertyville on October 25, where they would cast their vote for the very first time as adults. That first time came two years ago when Carmel students voted in the 2020 presidential election, and today’s voters were equally as excited and enthusiastic about realizing their opportunity to vote in the upcoming Illinois primary.
“Young people are always quick to complain about our current administration, the government or the fact that our country is run by older people but then they don’t go out and do anything about it,” said Mr. Jack Waddle. “Voter turnout for the younger generation is important. They care, but they have to do something about it. Getting them out here when they’re young is vitally important for the future of our country. It’s an exciting event for them, and you can see it on their faces. They’re excited to be here.”
Waddle explains: “It’s important to vote but not if you aren’t educated, so we take the time to talk about the current news and also ask them to be informed. We ask what they hear in the news, what they see, and what they talk about with their family at the dinner table.”
According to student Matthew Lotz ‘23, “When people say it’s only one vote,so it doesn’t matter, I think that it does matter, especially when you’re voting for a person that’s going to influence your community or environment and everything around you.”

CAFETERIA FOOD WASTE PROGRAM BEGINS
Carmel Catholic’s new cafeteria food waste program kicked off on October 17. Carmel joins the growing number of schools that utilize food waste pick-up sent to a composting facility. Students have been learning about the importance of this undertaking and are being asked to sort their waste into three categories – food waste, recycling and landfill. In the first month of the program, 540 pounds of waste was diverted to compost with 0.24 metric tons of CO2 avoided.
MURPHY SOCIETY
Named for Fr. David Murphy, O.Carm., the founding principal of Carmel High School for Boys, the Murphy Society recognizes donors who serve as models of support through their regular, yearly contributions to the Carmel Catholic Fund. Murphy Society members are alumni, parents and friends of Carmel Catholic High School who have contributed to the Carmel Catholic Fund for five or more years consecutively. Sr. Mary Cecil Kelly, BVM was the first principal of Carmel High School for Girls.
