HE SENT THEM TO PREACH THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND TO HEAL THE SICK. LUKE 9:2

WELCOME As we reflect upon 2012, we can truly see that God’s goodness and faithfulness has been at work in the lives of individuals and the corporate Body of Christ at Carmel. At the beginning of the year, God said that 2012 would be a year of favour and fruitfulness with windows of opportunity. We have seen many aspects of this take place. Earlier this year, we purchased a dedicated film and photography studio, which will be used to spread the Gospel through digital media such as the internet, live broadcasting and television. God’s favour enabled us to purchase this studio for a tenth of its value.

CONTENTS More recently, we introduced a specific healing focus to our Sunday evening meetings. As a result of hearing and believing God’s Word concerning healing, many Christians have experienced significant improvement in their physical conditions and others have been instantaneously healed.

THE UPRISING One week in one field plus one God equals Carmel’s annual youth camp. The camp was hosted by Carmel’s young adults’ department, St Revolution, and was one of the highlights in their calendar. A field of tents in Ross-On-Wye became the temporary home of young people from Carmel and other Churches. This year’s theme ‘Who Am I?’ saw the youth gather with a passion to encounter God and to discover their true identity in Him. Campers enjoyed the July sunshine as they partook in morning daily devotions and life skill sessions led by youth leaders. Each day focussed on a specific subject to help the young people realise who God is and who He can be in their lives, if allowed. Fun afternoon activities saw the teams working together to collect valuable points and to hunt for the hidden ‘Holy Grail’ trophy. The sound of praise and worship filled the marquee each night at the evening rallies. Guest speakers were welcomed; they shared their experience and godly wisdom on the topics given. WHO IS GOD? Setting the foundation for the rest of the week, the campers were first shown how God has been revealed through the Bible and to people in the Bible. An example was given of Moses, to whom God revealed Himself as, “I AM WHO I AM.” Exodus 3:13-15. The youth studied how God has revealed Himself to born-again Christians through His Holy Spirit who comforts, counsels and strengthens. Team leaders encouraged the campers to examine their view of God, to make adjustments where necessary, and to ask God to reveal Himself as the great I AM.

4

used as an example of someone who made choices without consulting God and as a result experienced negative consequences (Exodus 2:11-12). The young people were exhorted to consider the choices that affect their friendships, schoolwork, eating habits, relationship with their parents and their dreams for the future. Campers were challenged to allow God to direct their life’s decisions and to stop ‘playing god’ and start following Him. WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST Continuing with the example of Moses, the youth were warned to not allow their perceived inadequacies to hinder them from obeying God. Campers were shown that these insecurities are overcome by accepting their new identity in Christ and, as such, they were exhorted to renew their minds to the truth that Jesus has made them new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17). Youth were urged to remember that Christ lives in them through the Holy Spirit who strengthens them to overcome: “God doesn’t want you to merely survive, living an average life. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you, empowering you to triumph over fears and accomplish the seemingly impossible.” WHO DO YOU SAY YOU ARE?

YOU ARE NOT GOD

Drawing the camp to a close, the youth were challenged to answer a significant question: who do you say you are? The young people were warned of the dangers of allowing anyone other than God to shape their identity: “your identity will be defined by what other people say about you, unless you recognise and accept what God says about you.” The campers were also challenged to consider who or what influenced their identity, what hindered them from identifying with God, and what steps they could take to change their perceptions about themselves.

The youth were shown the importance of not neglecting God’s wisdom when making decisions. Moses’ life was

mystery of

CHRISTMAS

At Christmas time, gifts are given and received. Sometimes, these gifts are a mystery; we neither know what they are nor how to use them. Unless we understand the purpose and function of the gift, it holds no value and we will miss its benefits. Jesus, God’s ultimate and free gift to mankind, is the reason we celebrate Christmas. Often Jesus is the ‘mystery gift’ that is misunderstood and therefore ignored, not celebrated, and people don’t benefit from His salvation and healing. CHRISTMAS HIJACKED! Although Jesus is the reason for the season, Santa Claus has become the accepted icon for Christmas. The myth of Santa Claus has elevated the man-in-red to equal God’s power. Santa is said to be all-seeing and all-knowing, as the popular song suggests: He [Santa] sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake, he knows when you’ve been bad or good. As Christians, we understand that only God sees and knows everything. It is therefore our responsibility to communicate the true meaning of Christmas to those who don’t know or understand it. To these people, the essence of Christmas is a mystery. We must reveal this mystery to them. If we celebrate Santa and neglect to celebrate Jesus and tell others about Him, how will they know? THE MYSTERY REVEALED The Apostle Paul wrote that the mystery of Jesus has now been revealed (Romans 16:25-27). The two-fold revelation is that God

became man and that He dwells in all people who receive Him. 1. GOD BECAME MAN John’s gospel says that Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us. John 1:14. Paul confirmed this, writing that Jesus came in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:7. It was necessary for God to become man in order to be our deliverer. Mankind had needed a deliverer ever since Adam and Eve’s disobedience caused sin, and subsequent destruction, to reign in the earth. Jesus was the promised deliverer from sin. Throughout the ages, His coming and redeeming work had been prophesied (Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 9:6-7). Even Jesus’ name refers to the purpose of His coming. Bible scholar, Joseph Thayer, author of the ‘Greek-English Lexicon’ states that ‘Jesus’ means ‘Jehovah is salvation’. Thus, Jesus’ name gives us clear indication that He was divinely appointed as mankind’s Saviour. 2. GOD LIVES WITHIN CHRISTIANS Jesus is also referred to as ‘Immanuel’ meaning ‘God with us’ (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23). This points to God’s presence with us. However, Immanuel Himself declared that God’s presence would be in us too.

Knowing His departure was near, Jesus addressed His disciples concerning the promised Holy Spirit: He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:17. Jesus’ words were reassurance that His followers would not be left alone after His death. This was fulfilled after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples, giving them power to exemplify godly character and tell others about Jesus (Acts 1:8, 2:1-47). Every Christian since that time who has trusted in Jesus as Saviour, has had access to receive the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence. RECEIVE THE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS You too can receive Jesus. Come to Him in faith with a humble heart. Ask Him to forgive your sin and to live in you. Receiving Jesus has nothing to do your good works, but God’s redeeming work through Jesus. Don’t allow commercialism or mythology to hijack the true meaning of Christmas, that Jesus came to deliver you from sin and to live in you. Receive Him today; He brings peace beyond understanding and guidance for your every step.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! 5

OUR LOOK BACK AT CARMEL’S ANNUAL AGODTHING! CONFERENCE, 31ST OCTOBER – 4TH NOVEMBER 2012 WITH PASTORS MARK AND TRINA HANKINS, HOSTED BY PASTORS GERRI AND MICHELLE DI SOMMA.

T

he Conference was themed, ‘LIFE’. Christians from Carmel and other Churches gathered to discover, experience, and become equipped to live the abundant life that Jesus came to give. Through teachings and prophetic words, attendees were exhorted to press in and access God’s abundant life, which has been made available through the Holy Spirit. IDENTITY IN CHRIST

The Conference opened on Wednesday evening with the main speaker, Pastor Mark Hankins. He showed how Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1 causes Christian lives to be revolutionised when prayed 6

sincerely and continually: “When you pray for the eyes of your understanding to be enlightened, your vision will change. You’ll see yourself and your future in a new way.”

from bondages, destroys the devil’s works and changes any negative circumstance to the positive.

Pastor Mark expounded on ‘the exceeding greatness of His power towards us who believe’, saying, “This power is available to everyone; the only condition is that you believe.” Pastor Mark exhorted the congregation regarding the extent of God’s power made available to believers: “It is immortal in energy, unlimited in application, limitless in scope, immense in strength, great beyond measure, gigantic and extraordinary.”

On Thursday evening, Pastor Mark taught about the demonstration of God’s Spirit and power (1 Corinthians 2:4-5). “The Holy Spirit can do more in five minutes than you can do in five years,” said Pastor Mark explaining that Christians must operate from God’s supernatural realm instead of from their natural limited intellect.

Conference attendees were told that this power heals sicknesses, delivers

MAKE ROOM FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT

Pastor Mark demonstrated God’s power by laying his hands on people. Those who were touched were instantly filled with God’s joy and resulting laughter.

THE SEED IS GUARANTEED “Financial giving is linked to the Gospel,” said Pastor Mark opening the Friday evening session. He explained that when Christians are obedient to God’s principle of sowing and reaping, their prosperity causes the Gospel to spread and change entire nations. Pastor Mark highlighted that a problem occurs when Christians limit God’s blessing through faulty beliefs: “The problem is not on God’s end, but on the receiving end.” Pastor Mark exhorted the congregation to adjust their thinking: “Challenge unbelief in your heart; God’s Word confirms that those who sow generously will reap generously. There’s no limit to God’s giving except your capacity to receive it.” Pastor Mark also shared personal stories of how he overcame his wrong thinking and received God’s financial blessing. FAITH IS A VERB “By definition faith must include action,” said Pastor Mark on Friday evening. He explained that faith is a verb and, as such, must be translated into action. Pastor Mark showed how Christians are given a measure of faith but are individually responsible to develop it. “Faith requires steps not jumps. The initial step of faith is to move your mouth,” he said explaining that confessing God’s Word is the first action a Christian should take to develop their faith. JESUS IS THE BEST PRAY-ER On Thursday and Friday morning, Pastor Trina Hankins taught about the importance of intercessory prayer and led the congregation in times of corporate prayer. Pastor Trina shared her testimony of how she answered the call to be an intercessor when she was a young girl. She learned to yield to the Holy Spirit and allowed Him to lead her in prayer. “Jesus is our intercessor,” she said. “His prayers are perfect, so let His Spirit teach you how to pray.”

Using her own testimony, Pastor Trina exhorted that nobody is too young to be an intercessor. Gathering the young people together, Pastor Trina prayed that they would know the hope of God’s calling and be unafraid to speak about God. Prophesying, she said to the youth: “You are the key for this nation; you are the preachers and missionaries; God is doing something in your generation that is unprecedented.” Pastor Trina also prayed for the Church pastors and leaders present at the Conference. She prayed that God would grant them boldness to preach with authority and asked God to reveal strategies, wisdom and direction for those leaders to do God’s will. GOD’S ENABLEMENT The morning sessions proceeded with Pastor Gerri Di Somma’s teaching on the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit. Using John 14, he showed how there is a difference between the indwelling and the infilling presence of the Holy Spirit. The former is God’s presence that dwells with Christians when they are born again; the latter is a subsequent infilling of God’s Spirit, often called the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Gerri taught that the spiritual gifts are available to every Christian who has been baptised in the Holy Spirit. “The gifts can’t be bought or earned,” he said. “They are given as the Spirit wills and He releases the gifts through you when they are needed for a specific purpose.” The nine gifts were given from 1 Corinthians 12: word of wisdom, word of knowledge, discerning of spirits, gift of healings, gift of faith, gift of miracles, tongues, interpretation of tongues and prophecy. Each gift was described in detail and examples of their operation were given. The gifts were shown in the context of Paul’s writing: “Chapter 11 shows the qualification of the gifts, which is humility. The revelation of the gifts is given in chapter 12. God gave His gifts to unite the Church. Chapter 13 shows that our motivation for the gifts must be love, and chapter 14 reveals that the application of the gifts must edify, exhort and comfort the Body of Christ.”

MISSIONS MINDED Saturday morning was mission focussed; various ministers who were trained at Carmel or have been sent out from Carmel to establish their own ministries spoke about their experiences on the mission field. Conference delegates listened attentively to the exciting adventures these ministers had undertaken and their plans for the future. Each minister acknowledged that the work couldn’t be done without God’s help and direction. Carmel’s mission director also unveiled the vision for Carmel’s involvement in numerous mission projects, locally, nationally and internationally, in the coming years. IMPARTATION IS GREATER THAN INFORMATION The final night of the Conference was set apart to pray for all delegates to receive God’s anointing through the laying on of hands. “The laying on of hands is a doctrine,” taught Pastor Mark. “It’s a transaction. You can receive whatever you need from God because the anointing is multi-faceted. Scripture shows that blessing, healing, wisdom, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit is received through the laying on of hands.” Pastor Mark exhorted the congregation that they had a responsibility to receive: “We are the vessels through whom you can receive from God but it’s dependent on your expectation and ability to receive.” A BLESSED CONFERENCE “You cannot put a price on what we’ve received this week,” said Pastor Michelle at the end of the Conference. Her words rang true in the hearts of many people who received fresh anointing, joy and revelation from God. The full teaching from aGODthing! Conference 2012 is available on CD, DVD or MP3 at the Carmel Bookshop.

SELF-HELP TO

HEALING ARTICLE BY PASTOR GERRI DI SOMMA

IN ORDER TO PARTAKE OF GOD’S PROMISE OF DIVINE HEALTH, IT’S VITAL TO UNDERSTAND GOD’S CHARACTER AND NATURE.

8

God has provided us with many promises in the Bible. One of these promises is that we, as His children, can live healthily. God doesn’t merely promise to heal us when we are sick; He promises that we can live in a perpetual state of divine health. It has been said that God’s perfect will is not to heal us, but that we don’t get sick in the first place. This is because God is a loving heavenly Father. Just as human parents don’t want their children to suffer with sickness, God doesn’t want us to experience sickness. He doesn’t want us to simply manage our diseases either; He desires that our lives be completely free from all illness. In order to partake of God’s promise of divine health, it’s vital to understand God’s character and nature. Sadly, some people believe that sickness originates from God. With such a false belief, these individuals cannot experience God’s healing or health.

I

S THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

The truth we must accept is that God is the healer. God did not and cannot create sickness; it doesn’t originate from Him. From the very beginning, God created the Garden of Eden with perfection. There was no sickness at creation; sin and sickness entered the earth as a result of Adam and Eve’s disobedience. Since God has no sickness within Him, He cannot give sickness to anyone. In fact, the Bible emphasises that God only gives from His inherent goodness: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 3:17. This scripture also gives us confidence to know that God’s goodness will never change; therefore healing and health is always available to Christians who trust God and believe His promises.

P

RESCRIPTION FROM HEAVEN

Christians who want to discover God’s standpoint regarding healing and health need look no further than to the Bible, God’s revelation of Himself to mankind. Throughout Scripture, God has revealed Himself as a healing God. He declared to the Israelites, His chosen people, “I am the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26. Furthermore, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to become a sacrifice for our sin and sickness. Everything that Adam and Eve allowed into the world was dealt with at Calvary. There is no longer any reason why God’s children should either sin or be sick. Isaiah prophesied and Peter reflected upon the finished work of Jesus: …by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5; …who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed. 1 Peter 2:24. In addition, there is no record of Jesus ever being ill. On the contrary, He healed the sick: Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Matthew 9:35. We must realise that God doesn’t afflict His children with sickness. However, it is possible for us to remove ourselves from His protection through disobedience, thus exposing ourselves to the real perpetrator of sickness: the devil.

T

HE KILLER VIRUS

The Bible is also clear about where sickness comes from: the devil, whose sole purpose is to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. John 10:10. One way he attempts to do this is through afflicting us with illnesses, thus stealing our health, killing our potential and destroying our destiny.

We mustn’t be ignorant of the devil’s schemes. The Bible describes him as the father of lies, the accuser of the brethren, our adversary and the prince of demons (John 8:44; Revelation 12:10; 1 Peter 5:8; Matthew 12:24). These and other scriptures give a clear indication of the devil’s character and his intentions towards mankind. The contrast between our healing God and the devil who oppresses with sickness and disease is evident. Luke, a disciple of Jesus, also recorded the distinction: God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Acts 10:38. Once we understand that God is the healer and the devil is the oppressor, we are positioned to receive God’s promise of healing and divine health.

T

HE SELF-HELP SCRIPTURE

The Gospels record Jesus using different methods to heal people. Likewise today, there are various ways we can receive healing: any follower of Jesus can lay hands on the sick and they will recover; the Church elders can pray and anoint with oil; when the spiritual ‘gift of healings’ is in operation, sick people are healed (Mark 16:15-18; James 5:14-15; 1 Corinthians 12:9). Thank God that He has provided many opportunities for us to be healed, once again revealing His healing nature. The above mentioned ways to receive healing involve other Christians in the equation; however, God has also given each of us the power and ability, through His Holy Spirit, to deliver ourselves from sickness. Mark witnessed Jesus teaching His disciples this principle. His account shows us the four stages we need to put into practice in order to benefit from this God-given ability to command healing to our own bodies:

9

ve.pdf

1. HAVE FAITH IN GOD

2. SPEAK TO THE SICKNESS

After Jesus cursed a fig tree, His disciples were amazed to find it had withered away. In response to their surprise, Jesus said, “Have faith in God.” Mark 11:22. Other Bible translations say, “Have the faith of God.” (Wycliffe Bible and Worrell New Testament).

Jesus continued His teaching, showing that ‘the faith of God’ can work miracles when it is confessed from a believing heart: “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” Mark 11:23.

Having ‘the faith of God’ means having the same kind of faith that He has. In relation to healing, it is having the same faith that God has regarding health and wholeness. This may seem impossible, but God has made it easy: after Jesus’ ascension into heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in all Christians, empowering them to do the same works as Jesus. Since then, the

Holy Spirit has been given to all born-again Christians who desire to receive His infilling presence. This indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is the reason why we can have ‘the faith of God’. The Holy Spirit is God; therefore God Himself lives in us and His faith lives in us. Our part is to renew our minds to this truth, to accept and believe that God’s ability is within us to live exactly the way Jesus did – disease free.

3. BELIEVE WHAT YOU SAY

Our confession is powerful; it has power to change situations positively or negatively. For example, when people are sick, they usually complain about the symptoms. As a result, their symptoms persist and even get worse, simply because they have spoken about their sickness instead of commanding it to leave.

Jesus had already stated that we mustn’t doubt, but believe what we say. He then further explained our responsibility to believe: “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” Mark 11:24.

As born again Christians, we have authority to command sickness to leave our bodies. Many Christians don’t exercise their authority because they’re unaware of it. We must understand and accept the authority we have through the Holy Spirit and act upon it. Our circumstances are subject to change when we speak from our position of authority in Christ.

It’s essential that our belief be firmly rooted in God’s Word, because symptoms of illness will often try to distract us from the truth of healing. Faith does not doubt God’s promises even when the symptoms shout for our attention. Circumstances may indicate that we’re not healed and that the sickness is getting worse, but we must remain faithful to the truth of God’s Word. Our circumstances and sicknesses are subject to change, but

We mustn’t approach sickness with an apologetic or timid manner; sickness is

from the devil and must be dealt with authoritatively. That’s why it’s essential to know our God-given authority. Jesus highlighted this by telling us three times to “say”. This indicates that we must purposefully command our ‘mountain’ to be removed, whether it be a mountain of sickness or anything else that hinders us from God’s plan.

God’s Word has never changed, and it never will. Unfortunately, many Christians don’t know God’s will concerning their healing; therefore they pray, “Lord, if it be Your will, heal me.” They don’t understand that it is God’s will to heal. When we realise that healing and health is God’s will, we can confidently command sickness to leave believing that it will be done. 4. PURIFY YOUR HEART TO PERFECT YOUR PRAYER The condition of our hearts is vital; having ‘the faith of God’ and commanding sickness to leave with unwavering belief will make no difference if our hearts are not pure.

In particular, unforgiveness causes our hearts to become resentful, bitter and impure. This impurity of heart is a hindrance to receiving anything from God. That’s why Jesus clarified that the promise of God is conditional: “and whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.” Mark 11:25-26. Jesus linked His prior promise, “whoever says to this mountain… he will have whatever he says,” to this clause, “if you have anything against anyone, forgive him” using the word “and”. In other words, fulfilling the condition of forgiveness guarantees us the reward of the promise. This shows

us the importance of forgiveness. Not only does it release us from personal pain, able to live emotionally free, but it also purifies our hearts granting us access to God’s self-help scripture. BE HEALED! You don’t have to remain sick or diseased. God has given you healing promises through His Word and power through His Holy Spirit to command sickness to leave. Don’t tolerate sickness any longer. Choose to activate the promise of God concerning your health. Forgive those who have wronged you, develop your faith by renewing your mind concerning God’s character and nature, and with unwavering belief in God’s promise command sickness to leave your body.

WHEN WE REALISE THAT HEALING AND HEALTH IS GOD’S WILL, WE CAN CONFIDENTLY COMMAND SICKNESS TO LEAVE BELIEVING THAT IT WILL BE DONE.

TEACHING BY PASTOR MICHELLE DI SOMMA Many people search for healing, whether it is emotional, relational, mental or physical. Various man-made methods are used in an attempt to appease pain and suffering. However, Christian’s need look no further than to Christ, who purchased salvation and healing for us when He died, rose again and ascended into heaven. Sadly, many Christians are unaware that healing belongs to them as a covenant right. Therefore, they hope in other methods rather than claim their healing through unwavering belief in Jesus.

Jesus can and will heal. Doubt does not enter the mind of a person with this belief. For them it’s a done deal. As Christians, it’s vital that we progress from hope to absolute belief in God and His Word. Those who do will attain the fullness of God’s promises, which includes healing. Mark’s gospel relates the story of a woman who did just this (Mark 5:25-34). Like her, Pastor Gerri and I have travelled the path from hope to belief. The stages in our stories are as follows: 1. SICK BUT HOPEFUL

HOPE VERSUS BELIEF A massive difference separates hope and belief. ‘Hope’ is defined as a desire ‘with some possibility of fulfilment’.* Notice that hope has only a possibility of fulfilment, implying that doubt exists. For example, a person who is asked if they believe Jesus can heal them may respond, “I hope so.” This indicates their uncertainty. For them it’s only a possibility. Conversely, the word ‘belief’ means: trust or confidence, conviction, a principle accepted as true often without proof. Belief then, in relation to healing, is absolute assurance that 12

This woman had an issue of blood for 12 years but was hopeful that she might find a solution to her problem. Remember, hope means there is a possibility involved. Therefore, she sought help from many doctors and spent all her money for the possibility of improvement but she was no better, but rather grew worse. Mark 5:26. Years ago, Pastor Gerri and I also encountered a difficult situation concerning sickness. Our eldest daughter, then aged 6, was diagnosed with a rare disease that caused her kidneys to die. I donated my right

kidney but her body didn’t fully accept the organ, so she remained sick. At that stage, we didn’t know God or His Word, therefore our only hope was in the medical profession. I personally believe there is nothing wrong with seeking medical help. These professional people are a godsend who do their best to combat sickness. But they are not God, and cannot cure or heal. Only God can. However, I do believe that Christians whose sole hope is in the medical practice must progress to unwavering faith in God, the only healer. This happened in my life. The day I gave my kidney to our daughter, Pastor Gerri gave his life to Jesus. That was the start of our journey from hope to belief. God’s truth completely changed our lives. One of the truths He revealed was divine healing. 2. HEARING AND BELIEVING When the woman with the issue of blood heard about Jesus, she approached Him believing that He could heal her. What she heard had a direct result on her belief. She no longer hoped in other methods, but believed in Jesus for healing (Mark 5:27).

It’s vital to pay attention to what we hear because it affects us to either believe or doubt. The Bible says that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17. Our thinking must be captivated by God’s truth because well-meaning people will recount their experiences that seem to negate His Word. If we’re not guarded we will heed their words allowing doubt to replace faith. Pastor Gerri and I changed what we were hearing. We started to listen to God’s Word above the doctor’s words. Over time, the truth of healing penetrated our hearts and we stopped relying on the doctors and what they said. Instead, we became reliant upon God and what His Word says. Despite the physical circumstances facing our daughter, we became convinced that Jesus heals and that healing belongs to us. We refused to base our beliefs on experience; we chose to believe God’s Word. 3. SPEAKING THE TRUTH The woman with the issue of blood did not merely hear and believe. She also put her faith into action by saying and doing: When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” Mark 5:27-28. There are many instances where the Bible emphasises the importance of confession. The verbalisation of our beliefs is powerful and can change circumstances (Proverbs 18:21; Mark 11:23). Whether or not the

woman with the issue of blood realised it, her confession changed her destiny. Together with Pastor Gerri, I learned the power of confession. Eventually, our daughter rejected my kidney and the doctors placed her back on dialysis, removing her from the transplant list. This was a huge step backwards. But when I told Pastor Gerri the news, faith arose in his heart and he declared, “If God could create the heavens and earth in 6 days, God can give our daughter a new kidney.” And God did. Approximately two weeks later, we received a telephone call from the hospital saying there was a potential kidney match for our daughter. We took her for the tests and the match was positive. However, during those two weeks when everything looked bleak, we tenaciously clung to God’s Word and continued to confess His truth into the situation. Our daughter successfully received the kidney and hardly rejected it at all. We believe that God provided her with this miracle kidney. As Christians, we must confess what God’s Word says about our circumstances. Rather than talking about our difficulties, we must speak God’s truth by faith. 4. DETERMINED FOR BREAKTHROUGH According to Jewish Law, this woman’s issue of blood made her unclean. This meant that everything she touched also became unclean (Leviticus 15:25-28).

It is therefore very likely that she lived alone, excluded from society. Her act of approaching Jesus in public showed her determination. She risked humiliation and possible punishment if anyone recognised her or realised her unclean condition. The woman’s determination is evident. She didn’t start with good intentions and then give up; she persisted and made her way through the crowd until she touched Jesus and received healing (Mark 5:29-34). Often, Christians start well by studying God’s Word and confessing it, but gradually slip back into old habits of complaining. Eventually, they stop confessing the truth of God’s Word and their circumstances don’t change. HEALING BELONGS TO US The woman’s issue of blood made her unclean, but the blood of Jesus makes us clean! His blood sets us free, giving us healing and wholeness. Healing is your covenant right. Don’t allow people’s negativity, the enemy’s lies or your own doubts to captivate you any longer. Meditate on God’s Word concerning healing and allow His truth to become your reality. Confess His Word with confidence and be determined to keep hearing and confessing it until you receive the healing that belongs to you. *Collins English Dictionary 13

I MMUNISING OUR CHILDREN FROM EVIL BY PASTOR GERRI DI SOMMA

Psalm 127 tells us that children are a heritage from the Lord. As such, God has given clear instructions in His Word regarding raising children. Parents are responsible to apply His timeless instructions. Since they are God’s principles, they will produce godly results. GOOD INTENTIONS OR GODLY INTERVENTION? Most parents want the best for their children. Their intentions are sincere, but without God’s know-how, their good intentions will not produce God’s results. To help our children succeed in life, we must bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4. Parenting should not be based upon preference but upon God’s Word. Parenting God’s way ensures that 14

children mature into responsible adults who respect themselves and others, able to make wise choices and contribute positively to society. The Bible says: train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6. To ‘train up’ means to discipline and teach. The journey is not always easy or convenient but we must persevere. PARENT TO PROTECT Parents are content to allow their children to experience temporary pain and discomfort in the form of vaccinations. They understand that its purpose is to protect children from future disease. Likewise, when parents train their children according to God’s standards, temporary pain occurs, but its purpose is to protect them from greater and permanent pain later in life.

Parents have a wonderful opportunity to prepare children to experience God’s best in life. The following are some principles we can apply to achieve this aim: 1. LOVE GOD AND LEAD BY EXAMPLE Children learn by example; they imitate what they see their parents do. Therefore, it’s crucial that parents set a godly example. Due to their role and influence, parents are the first ‘god’ that a child responds to. This means that parents can positively mould their child’s character and help them to experience God personally. When we demonstrate our love for God, we set an example for our children to love Him too. A practical way to reinforce this message is to not entertain our children with toys or

games at Church. Instead, allow them to bring their Bible and encourage them to worship God. This shows our children that God is the focus of our lives.

uniquely positioned to inspire their children to dream big, to encourage their natural talents, and to affirm that they can do anything with Christ’s strength (Philippians 4:13).

2. FIRST MESSAGES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT

5. INOCULATE CHILDREN AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE MORAL MESSAGES

As parents, we must be consistent with the messages we communicate to our children. We must be aware of the dangers of advocating tales of Santa Claus and the Easter bunny. By upholding these fantasies, parents are, in fact, lying to their children. Parents who claim these stories are ‘fun and innocent’ are deceived. When children discover that these characters related to Christmas and Easter are fictitious, it is likely they will draw the same conclusion about Jesus, the very person we most want them to believe and trust in.

Every day our children are confronted with immorality through magazines, television, films, music and the internet. The media promotes such immorality as fun and exciting. As parents, we can use the media, the very thing that encourages immorality, to inoculate our children, by showing them how these media messages violate God’s principles.

3. SEIZE EVERY TEACHABLE MOMENT The Gospels show us how Jesus took advantage of every opportunity to teach His disciples, often using stories and parables to explain and illustrate His teaching. Stories are powerful teaching tools; they give a clear, relevant and easy to understand message to the listener. As parents, we can follow the example of Jesus by using both positive and negative situations and real life stories to teach our children. 4. ACCURATE, DIRECT AND POSITIVE MESSAGES ARE THE MOST POWERFUL Children often ask questions. Parents must take the time to discover the meaning of their questions and respond according to their age and maturity. For example, a boy asked his father, “Where do I come from?” The father replied with an in-depth biological explanation, not realising that his son merely wanted to discover the name of the city in which he was born. As parents, we must communicate positive messages too. Parents are

When my children were teenagers, I watched popular films with them. We discussed its themes and I used them to explain the unglamorous reality of such things as fornication, adultery, drug taking and lying. This helped them to make informed and wise choices when confronted with immorality outside the safety of our home. 6. REPETITION IS THE MODE OF LEARNING God instructed the Israelites how to raise their children: these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7. This scripture shows us the importance of constantly reinforcing God’s truth into our children’s lives; once is not enough. I put this scripture into practice with my children. Each day they read a chapter from Proverbs, the book of wisdom, and as a family we discussed what they had learned. 7. CLOSE PARENT-CHILD RELATIONSHIPS ARE CRUCIAL Children need to know that they’re loved and appreciated. Fathers must

understand that they have the power to affirm their children’s sexuality and mothers must realise that they can influence their children’s destiny. If close family relationships are missing, somebody else will meet our children’s emotional needs, affirming and influencing them. The danger comes when our children listen to that ‘somebody’ above us, especially regarding subjects such as dating, drugs and sex. 8. VALUE RELATIONSHIP, NOT ACHIEVEMENT We must value our children for who they are, not for what they do. Children will make mistakes, but they need to know that they’re loved despite their errors. Many parents isolate their children when they’ve misbehaved, with words such as, “Go to your room”. This sends the message that the child is only valued and loved when their behaviour is acceptable in the parent’s sight. If we’re not careful, children may learn to view God in a similar manner: that only righteous people can approach Him. Parents should rather discipline their children’s disobedience and then quickly draw them back into the family fold. We can also value our children by speaking positively to them and about them, by maintaining good eye-contact, spending quality time with them and through physical interaction such as hugs. IMMUNISE TO MAXIMISE You may have made mistakes in parenting and regret things said and done. If so, ask God and your children to forgive you. Start afresh today. Seize the opportunities to train your children and influence them positively. Take up your responsibility to protect your children, to educate and prepare them for life. Through love, teaching and discipline, immunise your children against evil and in so doing maximise their potential in God. Are you willing? Are you ready?

ACHIEVING

YOUR DREAMS

TEACHING BY TERRI SAVELLE FOY

Children are experts at using their imaginations. They think, dream and imagine the impossible. In their minds there are no limits or boundaries; anything is possible. Many of us had childhood dreams of being somebody important or achieving something momentous. Sadly, most adults lose this ability to dream. They allow the routines of life to become the norm and then abandon their dreams as false ideals that will never become a reality. However, God doesn’t expect us to stop dreaming. He has given us the potential to do something great, but we must take action. Instead of wasting

more time, repeating this year what we did last year, we must allow ourselves to begin dreaming again. Let’s start with three easy and practical steps that will help us to accomplish more in the next five years than in the previous fifteen to twenty years combined. 1. WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? The Bible informs us that where there is no vision, the people perish. Proverbs 29:18 (KJV). The English word ‘perish’ means ‘to die’. This highlighted something significant to me: if we don’t have a vision for our lives, we have no hope for the future and it’s as if we’re ‘dying’ on the inside. Having a vision for our lives is essential. Vision gives us hope; we become ‘alive’ again. Vision causes us to move from where we currently are to where we want to be. To gain a vision, we must use the gift of the imagination that God has given us. We must stretch our imagination and think bigger than before. The reason this is so important is because we must ‘see’ our future in our imagination before it ever becomes reality in the physical realm.

Some people call this ‘seeing with the eye of faith’. If we cannot see ourselves having or doing something, we will never have or do it.

I’m a really good actor. I have all kinds of great movie offers.” He also postdated a $10 million cheque to himself, which he kept in his wallet.

Nobody stumbles across success and figures it out later. Most people who are millionaires have purposely and actively envisioned this status for their lives, and made the appropriate steps to achieve their dream. It started in their imagination – they dreamed it first. John Maxwell, the internationally recognised leadership specialist, said, “Great vision precedes great achievement.”

Within five years, Carrey had starred in three Hollywood movies and his asking price was $20 million per picture. Today, he is the highest paid and one of the most popular comedic actors of all time.

A practical way to begin is to ask ourselves what we want our lives to be like in five years time. This question needs careful consideration. We can factor in elements such as the things we want to accomplish, the places we want to visit, the amount of money we’d like to earn and where we want to live. Other similar questions are useful and can help us to discover a new and exciting direction for our lives. 2. HAVE YOU WRITTEN IT DOWN? Once we have a clear vision for our lives, it must be written down. The Bible exhorts us to do this and shows how it is beneficial: Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. Habakkuk 2:2. In other words, the written vision becomes a roadmap for our lives. It points to the direction we need to navigate our lives, giving us clear indications regarding decision making that will lead to the reality of our vision. Successful people have followed this strategy and proven that it works. One example is the well-known actor Jim Carrey. He had a dream to star in Hollywood movies. His biography tells how he secured various small roles but was not satisfied to settle for less than his dream. Compelled by his vision, he drove to Los Angeles every night, looked out over the city and said, “Everyone wants to work with me.

of our minds we will naturally navigate towards those things. We’ll also start to notice opportunities to fulfil those desires and will be able to act on those opportunities. Here are some practical ways we can keep our vision in sight: •

Create a ‘dream book’ and fill it with images of the vision. Review those dreams daily, speaking them out and praying over them.

Construct a vision board in a prominent place either at home or work.

Set your most significant dream as a welcome note on your mobile phone.

3. CAN YOU SEE IT HAPPENING? It’s not enough to simply write out our vision. If we never look at it again and neglect to do anything else with it, nothing will change. Jim Carrey’s story evidenced the necessity of keeping the vision in sight. He kept his dream of the $10 million cheque in a place where he would see it frequently. Mr. Carrey was putting into practice this spiritual principle: we become what we behold. A biblical example of this principle in action is the story of Jacob and Laban (Genesis 30:25-43). Jacob had worked for Laban for many years and acquired for himself a large family. In time, Jacob desired to return to his hometown but Laban was reluctant to let Jacob depart for he had brought him great profit. Jacob made a deal with Laban: in exchange for his years of labour, he proposed to take all the spotted and speckled cattle, leaving Laban the solid coloured stock. Laban agreed. Jacob’s subsequent plan was to place branches that had been fashioned to look speckled before the eyes of the cattle as they conceived. He also selected only the sturdy livestock to look at the speckled branches. Thus, the cattle produced speckled and spotted offspring and Jacob accrued for himself a large and strong herd of cattle. Laban was left with a much smaller and weaker flock. How does this principle apply to us? When our dreams are at the forefront

It’s vital to adjust our daily routines to put this into practice. It’s not difficult and it isn’t time consuming. We must change our daily habits because they’ll change our lives. DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE This isn’t a new age positive thinking exercise; this is putting God’s Word into practice. Dreaming and imagining is the catalyst for us to start acting upon our vision for the future. My life used to be visionless; I had no dreams or hope. But when I became intentional about dreaming for the future, writing those dreams, consistently praying over them and acting upon opportunities, my life changed. I’m now achieving more than I expected. Now it’s your turn. God is not a respecter of persons. It’s time to make your dreams greater than your memories. Stop meditating on your past and start thinking about what you’re going to do with the rest of your life. Allow yourself to start dreaming again. Leave the limits behind; if you can dream it, God can do it!

TO GAIN A VISION, WE MUST USE THE GIFT OF THE IMAGINATION THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US. WE MUST STRETCH OUR IMAGINATION AND THINK BIGGER THAN BEFORE. 17

HEALING HAPPENS! T When Jesus walked on this earth, He healed numerous people suffering from a variety of inflictions, sicknesses and diseases. Jesus demonstrated God’s desire for mankind to be healthy. The following stories show that God has not changed: He still heals. These people have received God’s healing and want to share their experiences so that others can know and experience God’s goodness for themselves.

Cynthia Encelan For approximately eighteen months, I experienced severe back and knee pain. My job required physical duties so the pain meant that I couldn’t work. My manager required me to undergo assessments through an occupational therapist to see if I could return to work. I failed each assessment and there were threats that I would lose my job completely. Carmel introduced healing services to their Sunday evening meetings. When I heard about the first meeting, I cancelled prior plans because God told me to go. During the service, guest speake r Pastor Bernie McLaughlin called all those with back pain to come to the front for prayer. He asked me to sit on chair and stretch my legs forward. He then pointed out that my left leg was shorter than the other. I had never realise d that my legs were not the same length. Pastor Bernie explained that this is a common cause of people experie ncing back pain. I closed my eyes while he prayed for me and it felt like he was pulling on my left leg. However, I later realised that he didn’t even touch me; it was the Holy Spirit healing me. Within seconds my left leg was the same length as my right leg and the pain in my back and knee disappeared. During that same week I was reassessed. I passed the assessment and returned to work. I haven’t experienced any pain since.
