How Do I Write My Vows? BY ANGELA HICKMAN More and more Brides and Grooms are choosing to write their own vows. This adds an additional personal touch to the ceremony and allows them to express their feelings, promises and commitments to their soon-to-be spouse. Before you sit down and put your pen to paper, here are a few tips to get you started. Make sure you’re both on the same page. Writing your own vows is great - if both of you are on board. You need to decide together if you are writing them or not. You should also decide on the tone you are writing them in: poetic and romantic, or lighthearted and humorous? Finally, decide if you are going to share them before the ceremony or keep them as a surprise. “It was important to us to express ourselves honestly using our own words. Saying how we felt about each other, about our relationship and what we hoped to achieve [keeping promises to each other] was of primordial importance.” - Elizabeth Kogan, married 14 years Choose your words wisely. If you find yourself stuck, consider these questions. 1. What about your partner makes you laugh or smile? 2. Is there something that drives you nuts, but secretly makes you love them more? 3. What are your common interests? 4. What was the defining moment of your relationship? 5. Is there a special promise you want to make? 6. How do you see your future with your spouse-to-be? Elizabeth remembers, “I recall telling Viktor [her spouse] at the altar that our passion for embracing laughter had already helped us in the
page 8
| The Wedding Planner Magazine
early years of our relationship and would undoubtedly serve us later in life, which after 14 years of marriage. I can say it most certainly has.” Do your research. Take time to read through samples of wedding vows. Print out love poems, song lyrics and readings. It will provide inspiration and offer quotations you can use in your own vows. Write too much on your first go. Don’t be afraid to write too much! Start writing your vows weeks before the big day to give you time to trim them down. Aim to make them about a minute long. If you have more to say than you can fit into a minute, put those additional into a letter and have it delivered the morning of the ceremony. Practice, practice, practice! You do not need to memorize your vows. The day will be nervewracking as it is, so don’t try to remember them word for word. Practice making eye contact with your love while reading your heart-felt words. By doing this, you’ll be more confident speaking in front of your family and friends. Even though your words are meant for your spouse, they’ll be shared with everyone in attendance at your wedding. Make them authentic. Finally, however you decide to write and recite your vows, make sure they sound like you. Whether you choose to read them or sing them, they will be a small window into the love you have for each other. It’s okay to cry or laugh at yourself. It’s an emotional moment that will come through in your words and your guests will feel it.

BEACH WEDDINGS BY ASHLEY VICTORIA GUY
Beach weddings seem simple enough if you’re having a destination wedding—the resort does all the work and you just show up! However, even if you’re on a resort or if you’re planning an intimate ceremony closer to home, here are some helpful tips to ensure that your beach wedding is an absolute success!
For the Guests
For the Ceremony
• Provide a de-sanding station for guests to brush off their feet— soft-bristled paint brushes are a good option. • Set up a basket of sunglasses if the ceremony site faces west or ask guests to bring their own. • Have a “shoe valet” where guests can trade in their footwear for cute and comfy flip-flops. • Remind your guests to bring a light cardigan or wrap in case it gets chilly in the evening. • Try to make arrangements for accessibility ahead of time. • Remind guests to apply sunscreen—you could even provide a station for them to apply it. • Try to provide some shade, especially if there are kids and older guests. • Have a refreshment station close by—accessible water is essential on a hot day! • Advise guests to dress for the occasion. Light, flowing and breathable material like organza, chiffon and linen are perfect to avoid overheating. • If you’re getting married on a public beach, check to see if there are public washrooms. If this isn’t an acceptable option, look into renting an upscale portable lavatory.
• Make sure you acquire all the proper permits—check for beach restrictions on fires, tents or canopies. • Schedule the ceremony to end an hour before sunset to use the natural light for your photos. • Keep the ceremony short and sweet—if it’s especially hot, you guests might overheat. • Invest in a wireless mic to avoid having your prepared vows drowned out by waves or wind. • Plan your hairstyle accordingly—a windy day might call for an up-do to avoid hair in your face. • Secure your décor if it’s windy as well to avoid potential fines for littering on the beach. • Keep the décor simple to maximize beach scenery—a few shells and flowers are perfect but less is more. • Keep some bug repellent on hand in case they try to kill your buzz (no puns intended). Just be sure it won’t stain clothing. Making sure these items are handled ahead of time will ensure that you can enjoy your big day without stress and make it that much more fun for your guests.

Rehearsal “Dinner”? BY ASHLEY VICTORIA GUY
The Rehearsal Dinner: Not Just a Dinner Anymore
Karaoke
There’s nothing wrong with tradition, but sometimes contemporary couples want to put a twist on old favourites. Here are some great ideas for hosting a fun rehearsal “dinner” that everyone is guaranteed to enjoy!
Maybe you paid the DJ extra to ensure that your mother wouldn’t be singing at the wedding. This is her time to shine and perhaps dedicate all five Celine Dion songs to you both! In fact, this is a great opportunity to get out some of the tunes that may not go over well at the wedding reception. It will make sure that older guests are taken into consideration—and I’m sure your brother wailing to Green Day would make for a social media hit!
It’s Potluck Time
Dinner at the wedding will be formal enough already and let’s face it—we don’t need to see relatives mixing up forks on two occasions! Instead, you could host a low-key, casual potluck with your friends and family. The informality will take the pressure off and you can even cross off a few speeches! Have everyone bring their favourite dish for a beautiful summer evening of food and great company. Did Someone Say Party?
A beach or pool party is a sure way to get everyone involved, even the kids. If you live close to a beach, you’re set—but if not, put on some tropical music and have a BBQ. A backyard pool is another easy setup; the kids will be happy and with the garden for décor and some great signature drinks, you have another fun, casual rehearsal party. Just don’t drink and swim! Rise and Shine Rehearsal
A festive brunch is the perfect way to revamp a traditional rehearsal dinner—who doesn’t love eggs benedict? If you still have some loose ends to tie up before the wedding, this could be helpful because it brunch ends earlier. The other nice thing is that you will have more food options and won’t be inclined to over-drink.
page 22
| The Wedding Planner Magazine
High Tea, Anyone? Quite lovely and just a bit formal, this will certainly be more costeffective than a night of dinner and several bottles of wine. Small sandwiches, sweets and a selection of teas make a wonderful rehearsal afternoon! You can either host it yourself or make a reservation with a local high tea establishment. A Group Activity There are so many options here—take your pick! If you have a winter wedding, have everyone grab their skates and snowboards and make it a fun family day. Bowling is a kid-friendly idea for other seasons. If there are any concerts in town, dinner and a theatre or ballet performance is another great idea. Check to see if your wedding date is close to a fair or a Cirque du Soleil performance or if you’re still short on ideas, check with Groupon or Google to see what’s happening. The sky is the limit if you decide to ditch tradition for your rehearsal dinner. Having different experiences makes those special times more memorable and you will always look back with satisfaction.

WORK OUT BY HEATHER NEDHAM
You might not think about it, but your feet take a beating over the course of a day. Though the human foot and ankle form a strong mechanical structure (with 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments), the total force exerted on your feet during an average day can equal that of a fully loaded cement truck. When you look at it this way, it makes a lot of sense to give your feet the right type of support when you add to the force of that metaphorical truck. Let’s take a look at the two most common types of athletic shoes and which activities they’re best for. After all, the last thing you need in the days leading up to your wedding is an injury because you had the wrong footwear! Cross-Trainers
Generally speaking, cross-trainers are going to be slightly heavier than running shoes. This results from the need for extra support during higher-impact movements involved in lateral activities, for example. The soles are generally wider than those of running shoes to provide more stability in side-to-side movements. These shoes are the right pick for most activities except for running. This includes weight training, volleyball, Zumba or even using an elliptical machine.
Running Shoes
One key feature about running shoes is that they are generally lighter than other types of athletic footwear. The lower the weight you have to lift, the easier it is to run. This will also reduce stress on the knees and in the back, which might be a problem with a heavier shoe. It’s absolutely essential when picking running shoes that the shoe is properly fitted to your foot. There are models designed for people who overpronate (roll their feet inward when they stride, generally resulting flat feet) and for those who underpronate (roll their feet outward when they stride, resulting in high arches). Figure out which one you are so that you know where you need support when you try running shoes on. Typically, the tread on a running shoe is also going to be less defined. Since runners are usually moving in straight forward lines, good traction isn’t necessary and would just create additional weight.

Carmela Spinelli was walking casually down the halls of her high school on the first day of grade nine when she bumped into the love of her life. Her initial instinct, when she saw her books on the floor, was to yell at the older boy in rage. Instead, eleventh-grader Andrew DiMartino helped her pick up the books and introduced himself.
perfect proposals
“He was the cutest boy I had ever seen in my life,” said Carmela. “I thought you were cute for a ninth grader,” Andrew said as Carmela laughed in the background. Carmela, now an elementary school teacher, and Andrew, salon owner and hairstylist, have been dating ever since Carmela graduated high school. Andrew always knew Carmela was the one but wanted to plan the perfect moment to ask her to marry him. Knowing she loved Disney, Andrew prepared to propose at Disney World. On a summer day in August, they headed to the park. Carmela quickly caught on and suspected that a proposal was on the way. As their last day at Disney was coming to a close, Carmela was becoming unsure that a proposal would happen. “I honestly thought the proposal was going to happen at Cinderella’s castle and then it didn’t,” she said. They spent the whole day traveling until it started to rain. “I was very miserable because it was raining during my first time in Disney World,” Carmela recalled. They headed to the Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Andrew had secretly made reservations for a private room and the manager explained to Carmela that it was to celebrate her first time at the park and her birthday. Andrew ordered a set menu with Belle from Beauty and the Beast gracing the cover—Carmela’s favourite princess. When dessert arrived, Andrew got down on one knee and popped the question. “I know you wanted to be princess for the day, but instead would you be my princess for life?” he asked. After she said yes, the two could see through the glass window of the restaurant; a huge crowd of people was cheering as they watched the proposal. The night could not have been more perfect, but then one of Disney World’s firework shows began just as the couple exited the restaurant. Carmela is excited to wear her rhinestone fairytale tiara from Disney World, which will go perfectly with her ballgown wedding dress and complete her transformation into a real-life princess. Her custom engagement ring includes Andrew’s birthstone below the diamond. They will have subtle hints of the magical fairytale theme at their wedding, including their Mickey and Minnie Mouse wedding cake topper. “[Planning is] long and stressful, but it’s fun getting excited about certain things and ideas of what the day will look like,” Andrew said of the planning process. It may be a little over a year since Andrew and Carmela went to Disney World but these high school sweethearts will never forget that the real magic started with an accidental collision in the school hallway.

FOOD your man LOVES BY STEFANIE CIMINI
It’s no surprise that brides have primary jurisdiction when it comes to wedding planning. Some things, like flower arrangements and colour schemes, aren’t too difficult for men to pass on—but food? That’s a bit trickier. If you know your guy, you know he’s most likely fine with the simpler things (pistachio-crusted salmon won’t get him as excited as pizza).
Where do you think wedding trends are headed?
What if we told you that there are ways to make you both happy? Thanks to changing food trends, there are tons of catering companies that speak to both yours and his taste.
What’s your most popular menu item among grooms and why do you think that is?
If he likes pizza, try: Inner Fire Catering
A pizza party can still make for an elegant event with the right catering company. With organic ingredients and a reputation for making a mean Neapolitan-style thin crust, Inner Fire Catering has a little something for everyone. You, your guests and your hubby will all be satisfied!
page 34
| The Wedding Planner Magazine
“We believe the trend toward less traditional celebrations will continue. Couples want less stuffiness and more fun. They want their family and friends to relax and enjoy their day with them. Having an outdoor venue helps them achieve that vision.”
“Pizza has always been the favourite menu item but recently we’ve introduced smoked meats and the guys are having a hard time choosing between the two. Why do guys like pizza and smoked meat? Because those are basic male comfort foods!” If he likes beer, try: Big Grill Catering It might seem a little fishy: beer and nuptials? Sounds like
features something only a dream fiancée could pull off. Luckily for you, Big Grill Catering can make it happen, winning you the title of fiancée-of-the-year. Inspired by locally sourced food and on-site catering, this company provides an incredible beer trailer and promises the freshest experience for your wedding. Where do you think wedding trends are headed? “The population is now embracing the natural beauty of the outdoor rural aesthetic. Rustic country weddings held in rural locations with freshly cooked food made in front of the guests have become very popular.” Your beer trailer is a fascinating concept. How has it been received among brides and grooms? “People love it! The beer trailer completes our full service offering that our clients really appreciate. This leaves the client to concentrate on more important wedding planning. The trailer is completely refrigerated and can hold up to 10 kegs of beer! We set it up with our rustic Ontario pine bar and a Smart Servecertified bartender and are able to serve an ice-cold micro-brew pretty much anywhere.”
If he likes pork and BBQ, try: The Pork Ninjas The options are endless with pork and barbecue, since they’re probably the most versatile of hubby’s favourites. From cured meats and artisan cheese to hickory-smoked pork and brisket, these guys can provide what you and your groom are looking for. Where do you think wedding trends are headed? “I think weddings are becoming less formal with less money spent overall. When we quote on buffet versus family style versus plated, nearly all of our customers are opting for the buffet. We’re also noticing the grooms are doing more of the wedding planning.” What’s your most popular menu item among grooms and why do you think that is? “Brides and grooms don’t have different palates. That’s an assumption based on gender stereotype. Grooms love meat but we’ve also seen plenty of brides eat large amounts of meat. Brides love that we have such an extensive list of side dishes that are more church social than wedding classics. Brides also seem more concerned about accommodating special diets like vegetarianism.”

Alternative So you're planning to get engaged.
Congratulations! You might have noticed that weddings are starting to look a little different—from boho chic to backyard BBQ or even fantasy farm, the rules have changed. Gone are the days of cookie-cutter weddings. Contemporary couples are planning their weddings their way. It's not surprising that modern couples are also rethinking the engagement ring status quo. Diamonds have been the standard choice for decades, but savvy couples are exploring alternative options. So what are your choices? At The Wedding Planner Magazine, we receive tons of questions
about alternative engagement ring and diamond options so we've invited Alexis Smith, owner of Look at the Moon to answer our three most popular and pressing questions. 1. Is it okay to propose with a non-traditional engagement ring? Of course! An alternative engagement ring may be more unique, meaningful and less expensive than a traditional diamond ring. That being said, it's essential to make sure that your partner will be thrilled to receive one. Communication is the key to a great marriage—start down the right road with a conversation about engagement ring desires.

Engagement 2. Do antique rings make good engagement rings? Antique rings have unique history and charm. While that can be appealing, bear in mind that this means the ring has likely seen years of everyday wear. Though often solid looking clean and sparkly, antique rings may not stand up to another lifetime of wear (due to the worn-down band and prongs). I would recommend having the ring inspected by a trusted third-party jeweler before sealing the deal. 3. What gemstones are suitable for my engagement ring? The most important factor in choosing a gemstone for your engagement ring is hardness and durability. After all, this isn't a cocktail ring for special occasions—you are going to wear it every day for the rest of your life. Besides their beauty, diamonds are the hardest gemstone on earth. Here are some fantastic alternatives to traditional diamonds: Sapphires and rubies are a nine on the hardness scale (diamonds are a 10). Sapphires come in a wide variety of colours from vivid blue to peachy pink to icy white. Rubies are a deep red.
Rings
Lab-created diamonds are just that. They're 100% real diamonds grown atom-by-atom in a lab and they're not to be confused with cubic zirconia, moissanite or the plethora of “diamond simulants” on the market today. Lab-created diamonds are ideal for those who are concerned about their carbon footprint, but still want a real diamond. Rose-cut diamonds were introduced in the early 1500s and were popular until the early 1900s. With a domed and faceted crown, these diamonds evoke dreamy old-world elegance. Because rose cuts are flat underneath instead of pointed, it takes less carat weight to create a large surface area. From white to black and every colour in between, rosecut diamond options are endless. Four times harder than sapphires or rubies, you get all the durability and shine at a fraction of the cost. A 10 out of 10. Have more questions? Get in touch with Alexis, owner and designer of Look at the Moon at info@lookatthemoon.ca. For more alternative engagement ring ideas, visit LookAtTheMoon.ca. perfect proposals On October 17, 2015, David and Josephine decided to spend the rest of their lives together, following an unexpected, sentimental and perfectly “David and Josephine” proposal.
first dance playing and a candid photograph Josephine’s brother Simon had taken of them on the screen, David asked Josephine to marry him – and her answer was a resounding and tearful “What? Yes!”.
David picked Josephine up that morning, and while en route to a market at Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto, asked to make a pit stop at his home to change into something warmer first. While in the car, David expressed his “fears” about one day asking Josephine’s father to marry her – causing Josephine to reassure him emphatically that it would be fine when the day came. Little did she know, David had visited her father the day before, ring in hand, to ask for his blessing and after an hour of happy tears, he left with a “Yes! Of course!”.
Following more tears, hugs and laughter, David revealed to Josephine that he had also been secretly recording the proposal so that the moment could be shared with their loved ones.
When they arrived home, David started stalling on their plans, saying that it might be more fun to watch a movie by the fireplace. After pressing play, an unexpected video began – a montage David had created using images and videos taken of them as a couple throughout the course of their relationship. The video captured loving, silly and treasured moments, including clips of Josephine singing Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You” to David. Then, with the song they had dreamed of choosing for their
To this day, David is proud that it took Josephine 10 minutes before she looked at her ring, having been too
“David had created a montage using images and videos taken of them as a couple throughout their relationship.” caught up with emotion – and he has the video to prove it! Since their engagement, David and Josephine have been working together to create the wedding celebration of their dreams. Project managers by profession, they have been doing their homework, planning meetings and spending time with their chosen vendors – and most of their planning is complete! On September 17, 2016, less than a year after the proposal, David and Josephine will celebrate their wedding with their family and closest friends at Hart House, at the University of Toronto campus – complete with an outdoor ceremony held in a beautiful courtyard enclosed by stone walls, followed by cocktails and a reception in a Harry Potter-esque grand cathedral-style hall. In terms of décor, the happy couple and their wedding stylist, florist, engagement photographer and bridesmaid, Jordana Masi, of White Oak Flower co., are focusing on romance, using lush wild flowers, candles, wood accents and golden lace. With both David and Josephine (and their families) elated that they have found each other – a perfect match – the couple is hoping for a wedding celebration full of love, laughter, and tears (of course!).

two incomes: one household BY ANDRE MCCALMONT How combining financial resources can help couples achieve goals more quickly. By sharing the responsibility of managing household expenses, both spouses can better grasp the financial components of maintaining the household. This transparency can help show the importance of avoiding ill-considered splurges, as well as helping couples reach their goals faster and more equitably. The Incentives Building a budget and financial security plan isn’t always easy. By definition, saving means not consuming—which isn’t always fun. We all need goals to keep us motivated. For younger couples, this is a fantastic opportunity to understand each other’s aspirations. It’s also a great equalizer: even if one spouse makes more money, decisions should be unanimous. The Ins and Outs of Cash Flow Think of your household as a company with co-bosses. Earnings come in and payments go out. Whatever is left each month is profit or in this case, savings. Utilities, insurance, taxes, transportation, student loads and rent or mortgage will make up the majority of monthly expenses. Other household costs will include groceries, keeping vehicles fueled and entertainment. Instead of breaking down individual personal expenses such as clothing and pocket money, you can work together to set a monthly amount for each of you. Income is the easy part—you know how much you each take home. If either of you contributes to a pension plan or a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) through work, that money should be counted as savings. Joint Venture A joint bank account may be an ideal way to manage day-to-day expenses. Recurring bills can be paid automatically; you can also set
page 68
| The Wedding Planner Magazine
up automatic transfers to one or more shared high-interest savings accounts for big-ticket items like a new car or down payment for a house. Sharing Credit Credit cards with the highest rewards and other benefits have annual fees of $100 or more but typically, they don’t charge extra for adding someone to the account. You’ll save on fees and your combined spending means you’re accumulating rewards faster. You may also wish to consider having separate no-fee, low-limit credit cards. These can serve as a backup if one of your main credit cards is lost or stolen. It might also be difficult to surprise your partner with a birthday gift if he/she has already seen the charge on a credit card statement. Sharing Debt Paying off debt offers better returns than most investments, especially when it’s high-interest debt such as outstanding credit card balances. As a family, it doesn’t matter whose name is on the debt—paying it off should be a shared priority. Practice Makes Perfect Managing household expenses together in the early days of your relationship sets the foundation for lifelong financial security planning success. Expenses and spending are easier to track. Once kids come along, the budget will expand but the system is already in place. Early success saving together for something special such as an exotic trip sets the stage for bigger and more important objectives— an automobile, home, kids and retirement. Understanding finances and working as a unit are essential ingredients for making money work for you to help attain financial independence.

FLORAL COCKTAILS BY ERIN GREEN
When it comes to florals, everyone wants a way to use them differently. Maybe you considered a floral headpiece or even a backdrop, but did you know that many flowers are edible? Varieties like roses, daisies and lavender each have unique essences and are beautiful and flavourful additions to fine dishes and desserts. They can even do the same for your signature drink! Floral cocktails are a creative way to spice up the bar menu at your wedding, and these two recipes are easy, tasty and beautiful concoctions that will thrill your guests. Before you get started, it’s important to remember that not all flowers are edible and some can even be dangerous to eat. Be sure to do your research and wash your flowers well!
The Rose Mojito
This twist on a well-known cocktail is as fresh as a gust of spring air. The oh-so-slightly bitter flavour of the rose petals provides the perfect finishing touch for the mint and citrus tones of a traditional mojito and offers your guests something to cool and refresh themselves at a sweet spring wedding! For one drink, you’ll need: 1 oz of white rum
1 cup of crushed ice cubes
1 oz of lime juice
Rose petals
½ oz of liquid honey
Club soda
Mint leaves
Rose for garnish
Place the rose petals and half of the ice cubes in a Collins glass. Combine the white rum, lime juice, liquid honey and mint leaves in a shaker and muddle to bring out the mint oils. Add the rest of the ice to the shaker. Shake well and strain into the glass. Top with enough club soda to fill the glass and garnish with the rose.
THE PEACHY KEEN MARTINI
This cocktail is a cool treat for guests at a hot summer wedding! The sweet flavour of the peach cider combines with the dry tang of champagne and kick of cinnamon for a refreshing taste hinting at peach cobbler. Finish it off with the piney taste of daisy petals and you’ll be ready to celebrate all night.
For one drink, you’ll need:
¼ oz of cinnamon liqueur
Sparkling peach cider
¼ oz of lemon juice
Champagne
½ cup of crushed ice cubes
Daisies
Combine the cinnamon liqueur, lemon juice and ice cubes in a blender. Blend until the ice is nearly smooth, then pour the mixture into a martini glass. Top with enough peach cider and champagne to fill the glass. Garnish with a daisy and enjoy!

B BEACH-READY BODY
BY HEATHER NEDHAM
Feel like you don’t know where to start to get fit for that destination wedding? Here are a few tips for setting up a routine—and a few things to keep in mind along the way! Get a Jump-Start
The earlier you put your workout plan into effect, the better—especially if you’re hoping to drop a significant amount of weight. If you have a weight loss goal of 30 pounds, you’ll need to get started at least six months before the wedding; for 15 pounds, you’ll need three months and so on. Make sure not to cut it too short, though. Leave yourself some wiggle room for unanticipated circumstances like illness or stress. Your body has a limit to how much fat you can blast at any given time: you don’t want to get to a point where you are burning muscle because that muscle speeds up your metabolism. Motivation
Will you ever have a better fitness motivator than your wedding day? Seriously, your desire to get fit will spike in the months leading up to your walk down the aisle. Put that drive to good use in the gym, but be careful. Setting a big weight loss goal can motivate you, but aiming too high might set yourself up for failure and frustration. Evaluate your ideal weight realistically and decide if you’re capable of getting there in a healthy way. Write your goals down in a journal and take note as you reach each one so you have a record of your success. It will help you continue to build on your achievements. Know What It Takes
The amount will vary depending on your goals, but the rule of thumb is a minimum of three to four 30-minute sessions of cardio and of strength training per week. Find something you enjoy so you’ll be more likely to keep it up. Remember, if you continue to do what you’ve always done, you’ll continue to get the results you’ve always gotten. Want to make progress? Then prepare to push yourself a bit harder. Adjust Your Eating Habits
“Will you ever have a better fitness motivator than your wedding day?”
To get the most out of any exercise routine is to pair it with healthy eating habits. What’s the simplest way to get started? Eat more vegetables and focus on “superfoods” like broccoli, eggs and walnuts. These will fill you up quicker, keep you feeling full for longer, and will help you lose weight faster. Don’t forget to drink lots of water, which will also help you feel full. Create a Visual Diary
The best way to keep track of your progress is to take regular selfies! The number on the scale is not the best indicator of your progress. A picture lets you see how much better you look in your clothes. After all, when you’re training you lose fat but you also gain muscle.
You’ll want to focus on the parts of your body that will be on display in your gown, but don’t neglect other areas. The most successful fitness plans balance nutrition and exercise by working your entire body. Finally, remember to have fun as this is an exciting time in your life and you will want to feel like yourself on your wedding day.

Tipping The Balance BY ELIZABETH KOGAN This question likes to play in the backs of couples’ minds during wedding planning. “Should we or shouldn’t we tip?” To say that couples are overwhelmed by the financial demands associated with planning their once-in-a-lifetime day would be an understatement. On top of the fees that they’re already paying for numerous services, they need to consider whether or not a gratuity should be provided. According to one event specialist, “tipping should not be mandatory.” Phoebe Lo of Phoebe Lo Events believes that “tipping should take place when one has received outstanding service and quality of work from one’s event vendors.” This idea stems from the viewpoint that the tip is a token of appreciation recognizing the hard work done to make the wedding day a success. However, Lo acknowledges that some businesses will charge a mandatory gratuity as part of the total bill. Lo’s advice is that couples speak up and ask questions of their prospective vendors. Approach the companies that incorporate an automatic gratuity on their bills. Ask for a breakdown of what the amount truly represents and what it will be used for. This can help identify the necessary budget allocation. If you aren’t sure where the money should come from, consider taking it from the contingency fund. This is always necessary to cover unexpected wedding-related costs. Tanya D’Angela of Classy Affairs counsels couples to take into account the amount of time and any potential overtime a vendor may be spending on the project as an indicator of the tipping point. Her general advice to couples is to tip between 10 and 20 percent, provided the gratuity isn’t already included in the price. Lo points out that there are cultural factors to consider as well. “In some cultures, the idea of tipping or giving away money is a gesture to share good luck and fortune with workers,” she explains. She further shares, “In the Chinese wedding culture, red packets containing cash are typically handed out by the parents of the bride and groom before vendors leave the house. This is to symbolize that the vendors are blessed upon their departure in celebration of the couple’s and the families’ milestone.” At the end of the day, D’Angela says that it’s up to the couple to decide whether or not they have the financial means and the desire to tip vendors. She adds, “I always tell them [the couples] that the more appreciated the vendors feel, the more time and effort they will spend.” As with anything, it’s about building relationships.

Your engagement party is the occasion to showcase the beginning of you and your fiancé’s new adventure together. Thus, when it comes to your outfit, it may be best to keep things elegant and simple. Think Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly – after all, it never hurts to look classy at an event where your in-laws are likely present! To continue from 2015, the trends for spring and summer of 2016 are streamlined towards minimalism and paring everything back to the essentials. While it may be tempting to pull out your goto little black dress for this evening event, try a tasteful twist and go for a longer hemline. Keep your accessories simple and colourless to avoid overdoing the elegance factor, such as squared diamond earrings and suede black pumps. Add a whimsically designed black-and-white purse with some red lipstick and you’re set! Total Golden Age glam. In the words of Robert Browning, “Less is more!”

It’s important for the man to look great at the engagement party—but in a modest way without upstaging the bride. Chances are good that you will be wearing a much more formal look on your big day, so the engagement party allows you a chance to be dressy but still casual. A navy suit from Berluti with a collared shirt will fit the bill and not wearing a tie keeps the look simple yet elegant. You want to look like the leading man in your fiancée’s life, so think Ryan Gosling or Brad Pitt and dress to impress. When it comes to shoes, this is your chance to make the outfit stand out. You can go simple and casual or stay dressy. Brown dress shoes work or even those golden-toned kicks you wanted to wear. Your fiancée will be dressing her look up with jewellery, so why not dress yours up with the shoes? Don’t be afraid to add a little something to the outfit to set your style. Think a pocket square in a great shade, perhaps to match the theme of the wedding, or a stylish watch. You can even wear fun socks—that will definitely show off your personality and style! Your bridal shower is a perfect opportunity to make a trendy fashion statement. With just your favourite girls present, you’ll feel much more relaxed and willing to take a risky style approach to your outfit. Since this is most likely a day event, you’ll still want to keep your attire simple and classy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t throw a modern spin on it! A short dress with a solid dark hue and a high collar can really make a statement. It gives your outfit a fun, retro appeal without making it seem straight out of the ‘60s. To keep up with the trendy theme, go for suede peep-toe booties and a gold statement necklace. Match your necklace with some simple gold accessories to tie your look together. Your friends will be insanely jealous of your life and your wardrobe!

Your bachelorette party is a great opportunity to have a stylish night out! Your bridesmaids may not have told you anything about the location, which can be a blessing and a curse. Odds are good though that they’re taking you somewhere fun and exciting, so make sure to dress for it! Look at it this way: this is your night to be absolutely fabulous and celebrate one more wild night with your girls, so take a few chances with fashion. This is your chance to wear the brightest and most stunning colour that you own or can get your hands on, so don’t be afraid! Wear a party dress with a dropped neckline; it’s perfect for statement jewellery. Next come the shoes—think heels! If your outfit is colourful, stick with black shoes to complement or if you’re wearing black, have fun by choosing a patterned heel or vibrant colour. For your purse, make sure it’s small enough that it won’t get in the way if you end up going dancing. Hidden straps are also a great feature for a small purse and matching the bag with your shoes will tie the whole outfit together. Your makeup is also very important, so have fun!
