MONGOLIAN ENGLISH LESSON 29

Notes on the origin of Written Mongolian In order to understand what is Mongolian language and to understand Mongolian culture we need to trace back on history of the language, influences from neighbours and today a lot from English words.

Written Mongolian is to be intended as eastern Mongolian, old Mongolian script is derived by Aramaic script via Sogdians and Uighurs. One of the main trait of Mongolian language is that we have a continuous exchange between the spoken dialects and the written language, even if initially that was not the case. Probably the most ancient document we have in Mongolian is dated back to 1225 to the nephew of Chingis Khan, while the most ancient and famous work in Mongolian is the Secret History of the Mongols itself. In the oldest texts we can find clearly the influx of Indo-European words, some Chinese, later on Buddhist scriptures were introduced and this helped to stabilise the language. Many words from Uighur were replaced, the orthography and grammatical structure became more consolidated. Even some new letters have been invented to replicate the Sanskrit and buddhist sounds.
