Editor’s Letter
ummer is the time to throw open the windows and let the outside in. The Monterey Peninsula is known for its mild climate that attracts so many secondhome buyers looking to find reprieve from the heat of Texas, Arizona and inland California, where everyone comes to enjoy warm days followed by cool sunset evenings gathered around outdoor fires. Our area is also Silicon Valley’s playground where a large percentage of homes are owned by Bay Area residents looking to slow down and get away from the fastpaced tech culture that’s given rise to Silicon Valley’s fame. One of our feature articles discusses this and how Bay Area residents find different ways to relax and unwind in Carmel and Pebble Beach. We’ve expanded this issue to bring you more about the small luxuries found in our village and to update you on all of the happening’s since our last issue. We would be remiss to not discuss how the natural tragedies stemming from the Soberanes Fire and massive rainfall this winter deeply affected our neighbor, Big Sur. The local community came together in many ways to help Big Sur businesses, and I hope you take the time to read our article, “Battered but Unbowed, Big Sur Survives– with Help from the Outside” to learn how you can help. Big Sur is

open, so don’t forget to take that ultimate Sunday drive and go visit our friends. Please enjoy our largest issue yet, filled with homes that meet everyone’s idea of luxury, from the charming white and blue Carmel beach cottage on page 39, to the ultimate in sumptuous luxury on pages 76-77. Offered at $29.9 million, this on-top-ofthe-world estate looking over the Pacific and down on Pebble Beach Golf Links, includes every luxury one could imagine inside and out. For those new to our area and wanting to explore, we offer many luxury vacation residences available to tempt you with the lifestyle that urges so many to own here. As our third issue hits the stands, Car Week 2017 will begin. We invite you to come see us during the unofficial kick-off party to car week, McCall Motorworks Revival at the Monterey Jet Center, or during Concours on the Avenue in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. As always, we welcome you to visit our Ocean Avenue office where you can view the extraordinary homes we represent and learn more about the area. We’ve been proudly escorting people into the Carmel and Pebble Beach lifestyle for over a century and look forward to seeing you. Lesley Penater Vice President of Marketing

abulous new construction reminiscent of the “early Carmel days” when Carmel’s first golf course was located on Carmel Point in the early 1900’s. Bell-McBride Builders built a new 1,900 sq. ft. home and relocated the historic Club House on the 5,000 sq. ft. lot. The home features beautiful woods, stones, ceramics, vaulted ceilings, ocean views, patios, outdoor gardens, and the historic “Golf House” into one of Carmel’s true jewels.

his year Pebble Beach Food and Wine celebrated its 10th anniversary of bringing the finest chefs, food and wine to Pebble Beach. The highlight of this year’s event was the Bocuse d’Or Team USA dinner presented by The Venetian. As the exclusive real estate sponsor, Carmel Realty Company provided access to one of Carmel and Pebble Beach’s most iconic oceanfront estates to provide a memorable setting for an extraordinary dinner. This once-in-a-lifetime event brought together the team that won America its first Gold Medal in the history of the Bocuse d’Or culinary competition. Chefs Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Gavine Kaysen, Philip Tessier and Matthew Peters recreated the exquisite cuisine that made history. www.PBFW.com

ourmetFest 2017 was a four-day extraordinary food and wine event featuring local worldrenowned chefs and sommeliers. Carmel Realty Company was the exclusive real estate sponsor for GourmetFest 2017. Through deep local relationships, Carmel Realty Company was able to provide unparalled access to some of the area’s most stunning estates. The strolling cocktail reception to the once-in-a-lifetime Rarities Dinner ($5,500/plate) was held during sunset at a picturesque estate nestled in Cypress trees on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. Highly decorated Michelin Star chefs Daniel Boulud and Michael Tusk were two of the five top chefs featured at the Rarities Dinner.

Big Sur survives—with help from the outside

L
iving in Big Sur has always been a challenge. It is a region of aweinspiring beauty, but making a home in the midst of the physical splendor of this rugged coastal region comes at a cost. Connected to the rest of the state, for all intents and purposes, by a single road—Highway 1, the Big Sur region is uniquely dependent upon a slender asphalt lifeline, and when that lifeline is severed, things can get hard. The drought-busting storms of the winter of 2016-2017 brought more than just relief from dusty riverbeds and near-empty reservoirs—in the wake of particularly heavy rains in February a landslide beneath the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge caused the span to fail, cutting in half the most heavily populated part of Big Sur, here the majority of the establishments loved by locals and tourists exist—such well-known names as the Big Sur River Inn, Big Sur Taphouse, Glen Oaks Lodge, Big Sur Roadhouse, and many more. In the spring, landslides cut Highway 1 in three places in the southern reaches of the region. One of these, the Mud Creek slide, is a monster which buried a ¼-mile length of Highway 1 and deposited so much soil between the highway and the water that it added 16 acres to the area of the state of California.
Between the bridge and the slides a 24-mile-long stretch of Highway 1 between the Pfeiffer Bridge and Paul’s Slide, south of Lucia, lies completely isolated from the outside world. BUSINESS AS USUAL NORTH OF THE BRIDGE
In the north, the stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel and the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge is fully open, as are all businesses and facilities, except for Andrew Molera State Park, which is still recovering from last summer’s devastating Soberanes Fire. These are the fortunate few, with no travel restrictions preventing visitors from cruising down the coast and partaking of the views, the accommodations, the food, and the general Big Sur ambiance. Businesses not affected by the road closures include Big Sur River Inn (800) 548-3610, (831) 6672700, www.bigsurriverinn.com. a favorite dining and relaxing spot right on the Big Sur River, with a bar, restaurant and 20-room inn. Many visitors love to relax in the Adirondack chairs that are strewn about the shallows of the river below the Inn, dousing their feet in the cool water while enjoying a beer or glass of wine. Right next door to the Big Sur River Inn is Local Color (831) 667-0481, www.bigsurlocalcolor. com, an artisans gallery with
fine art and handcrafts by local artists. Just upstairs is Studio One artists’ gallery. Big Sur Roadhouse (831) 667-2370, www. bigsurroadhouse.com is open for dining, the seasonal menu featuring California cuisine made with local, organic ingredients. If you are planning more than a day trip, accommodations range from tent, RV, and cabin camping at Big Sur Campground & Cabins, (831) 667-2322, www.bigsurcamp.com; Fernwood Resort & Campground, (831) 667-2422, www.fernwoodbigsur. com; and Riverside Campground & Cabins, (831) 667-2414, www. riversidecampground.com; to Ripplewood Resort (831) 6672242 www.ripplewoodresort.com; a rustic resort with 17 cabins; Big Sur Lodge (800) 424-4787, (831) 667-3100 www.bigsurlodge.com, inside Pfeiffer State Park, with single, double, and family-size rooms, restaurant, gift store and deli. Looking for a step up from a tent cabin or A-frame? Glen Oaks Big Sur (831) 667-2105 www.glenoaksbigsur.com, is a rustic-modern adobe-walled 1957-vintage motor lodge which combines up-to-date “green” sensibilities with an air of rustic luxury which is unique in the region. The décor combines reclaimed stone and renewable Peroba wood, bamboo, and wool

carpets, with Pendleton Mills blankets and organic cotton bedding for luxurious comfort. WHAT ABOUT SOUTH OF THE BRIDGE?
Summer is usually a busy, even hectic, time of year in Big Sur. The beauty of this unique California coastal region is famed the world over, which is a boon for local businesses as tourists from the four corners of the earth come to bask in the tranquil splendor of the coast. This summer season will be a challenge for the local businesses, though, especially those south of the bridge. Even though a bit more effort is required to visit the area this year, travelers who make the trip will be helping to ensure that these unique businesses survive, while being treated to a quiet Big Sur ambiance that has been almost unknown in recent years.
Caltrans has fast-tracked the replacement for the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, but the state-ofthe-art 310-foot-long single-span bridge is not slated to be open until September 30th. The good news for travelers who are still yearning for the Big Sur experience is that access around the failed span by a bypass foot-trail was opened to the public mid-summer, with shuttles operating north and south of the trailheads. To make your way to the noweerily quiet stretch of Highway 1 south of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge site, leave your car at Andrew Molera State Beach and catch the shuttle to the bypass trail. After negotiating the ½-mile trail it’s a quick stroll to such well-loved Big Sur businesses as Big Sur Deli, (831) 667-2225, www.bigsurdeli.com a familyowned-and-operated full-service
deli in the center of Big Sur, next to the Post Office; and Big Sur Taphouse, (831) 667-2197, www.bigsurtaphouse.com, a beer and wine bar with a variety of microbrews on tap, and bottled beers from breweries across the country. It’s only a short shuttle ride south from the bridge to Hawthorne Gallery, (831) 667-3200, www. hawthornegallery.com, showing the work of Gregory Hawthorne and other talented members of the Hawthorne family, as well as the work of nationally known artists in contemporary painting, sculpture, blown glass, ceramics and cloisonné. Right across the highway is Nepenthe, (831) 6672345, www.nepenthebigsur.com, the world-famous restaurant with a view that encompasses 50 miles of the rugged Big Sur coast. Family-owned since 1949,

Nepenthe is easily one of the most picturesque dining spots in the entire state! One final mention, for Post Ranch Inn, (831) 667-2200, www. postranchinn.com the luxurious resort poised on the heights between the ocean and Highway 1 just south of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge closure, reopened in April after the storm season abated, Post Ranch Inn has bypassed the woes of earthbound travelers by offering transportation by helicopter from the Monterey Airport. Post Ranch Inn’s uniquely designed clifftop bungalows trace a ridgeline high above the Pacific, offering unparalleled views which can be enjoyed from private hot tubs and decks that seem to float above the crashing surf and cascading hillsides. Visiting Post Ranch Inn now offers a unique opportunity to cruise a virtually traffic-free Highway 1 on one of their electric bikes, or in the comfort of a chauffeured Lexus.
California’s Big Sur coast is a region of splendid physical beauty that is known and loved by Californians as well as visitors from around the world—but it is also home to numerous businesses and hundreds of families. The residents of Big Sur have suffered tremendous hardship due to the bridge failure and mudslides which have closed the road, north and south, cutting the lifeline which connects this unique community to the rest of the world. The best way to support the Big Sur community if you are not able to visit and support the businesses directly, is through the Big Sur Relief Fund at the Community Foundation for Monterey County, which you can visit online at www.bigsurrelieffund.com. 100% of your tax-deductible donation will go to support affected residents and employees of the businesses which have been temporarily closed.

staple on the Peninsula since 1937, the renowned AT&T Pebble Beach ProAm, or The Crosby to some, is a must see for golf enthusiasts and celebrity seekers alike. The event is held at three breathtaking courses on the Pebble Beach coast; Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is also a generous charitable event funding multiple local charities. $10.6 million was given to non-profit organizations supporting the tri-county peninsula last year. This PGA event is not only known for the golf and landscape, but the celebrity sightings too. If you’re lucky, you may score an autograph or photograph with funny man Bill Murray, the talented Justin Timberlake or all-star quarterback Aaron Rogers. Carmel Realty Company’s annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am event was held at a private home on Thursday, February 9th during the celebrity round on the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Situated on the private side of the fairway opposite spectators, the location provided for excellent viewing and fun celebrity encounters while the tent gave much needed shelter from the rain. Guests enjoyed beer by Leopold 7 and wines from local wineries, Bernardus and McIntyre.

I
t’s difficult to imagine two places that are as far apart in atmosphere, outlook, and attitude as hard-driving, results-oriented, world technocapital Silicon Valley and relaxed, laid-back, artsy Carmel-by-theSea. But even technology leaders and financial wizards need downtime to relax and unwind. The Bay Area’s upper and middleincome residents—who have the means and the opportunity to travel just about anywhere their hearts desire—are increasingly choosing as the place they go to relax not some faraway exotic destination like Bali, Lanai, or St. Tropez, but nearby Carmel. Just a short drive south from anywhere in the Bay Area, Carmel has become a weekend or short vacation getaway for many Bay Area residents. Whether staying in one of the village’s quaint inns, world-class boutique hotels or retreating to their own second home in the area, Carmel is the ideal location for “getting away from it all” without having to board an airplane or spend long hours in a car. A recovering economy in the last few years has seen a welcome uptick in tourism in Carmel. Evidence of that uptick is shown by the percentage hotel occupancy, which is indicated by the Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT). Figures reported by the Carmel Chamber of Commerce indicate visitation rates have not only recovered to, but exceeded, pre-recession levels – good news for hoteliers, restaurateurs, and business owners.
2017-listings-catalog_summer-fall_TEAM-SILICON.indd 112
From the history of old cultural Carmel to the modern-day shopping and dining experiences to be found, there is much to attract visitors from the Bay Area. The village is home to historic Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, the second mission established in Alta California by Spanish missionaries, in 1770— originally located in Monterey, but moved to its present location in 1771. Mission Carmel, as it is known, is likely the only place in California to be the interment site of a saint of the Catholic Church— Father Junipero Serra, the founder of Mission Carmel, was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. Carmel has long been known as a quaint artists’ colony along the southern curve of Monterey Bay—just one of the qualities of the town which attracts Bay Area residents. As early as 1910, eight years after Carmel was founded, the Los Angeles Times carried an article about the village that was entitled Hotbed of Soulful Culture. The artistic aspect of Carmel remains important to this day. Writers, painters, sculptors and artists of all types have lived and worked in, and been inspired by, Carmel-by-the-Sea, for over a century. Renowned American poet Robinson Jeffers lived in Carmel for most of his life, from 1919 to his death in 1962, in a stone cottage known as Tor House which overlooks Carmel Bay. Cultural activities abound in modern-day Carmel, in forms ranging from art galleries to symphony performances, the world-famous Carmel Bach
Festival, and theater performances at the Pacific Repertory Theatre and the Sunset Center. No destination will hold the attention of the sophisticated travelers from the Bay Area if the wine-and-dine scene isn’t up to standards, and Carmel holds its own against any destination in the world in that department. It’s something of a self-fulfilling prophecy: a destination which attracts visitors for other qualities will soon develop a food-andwine milieu to satisfy their desires, and a high-quality food-andwine scene will attract discerning visitors. That is exactly the metamorphosis which has taken place over the years as Carmel transitioned from sleepy artists’ colony to sophisticated (but still quiet and charming) destination. Restaurants such as Aubergine, Grasing’s, La Balena, Basil, and several others, can boast of world-class chefs on their staff, and with the fresh produce of the Salinas Valley and the wines of the Monterey County wine region practically on their doorsteps, these culinary talents have the materials at hand to produce the culinary experiences that are bringing visitors from the Bay Area to their tables. The natural beauty of Carmel and its environs is another draw for the Bay Area visitor. Even in a region like the Central Coast and the San Francisco Bay Area, which abound in natural beauty, Carmel and the surrounding area stand out. The wide, inviting beach fronting Carmel Bay, more sheltered than its neighbors to the north along

the broad arc of Monterey Bay, is an inviting attraction for Bay Area residents. Just a short drive down the coast is Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, the “jewel of the State Park system,” a protected habitat that still looks much as it did when European explorers first came to the area in the 18th century. The sea lions that give the reserve its name—“lobos marinos” to the early Spanish settlers in the area—frolic in the waves and sun themselves on the rocks of the spit of land that Australian landscape painter Francis McComas (1875 – 1938) called “the greatest meeting of land and water in the world.” Of course, no discussion of the attractions of Carmel would be
2017-listings-catalog_summer-fall_TEAM-SILICON.indd 114
complete without mentioning golf. The world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links lies along the clifftops just north of Carmel, and south down the valley lie Quail Lodge and Carmel Valley Ranch, two inland courses that are renowned in their own rights. Pebble Beach and the other courses in the area are on the bucket-list of golfers all over the world. So, while the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley moversand-shakers reshape the modern world from their northern fastness, when they want to stretch out and get away from the moving and shaking, they head south, through Steinbeck Country, to quaint-yet-sophisticated Carmelby-the Sea. -Gary McCormick
