Always a wonderful evening, this annual event featured in this issue is now one that mirrors one of Carmel Realty Company’s core values of giving back to the local community. Mindful-by-the-Sea
C
armel-by-the-Sea’s roots as an artists’ colony date back more than 100 years, luring writers and intellectuals from all over and bringing an undaunted creative and spiritual energy to the village. That vitality still exists today in many different forms and makes Carmel a favorite place for those wishing to connect with the area’s natural beauty as well as themselves. With that in mind, a new wellness program was recently introduced by Visit Carmel that’s designed to help visitors to arrive fully, be more present while they are here, and take away that feeling when they leave. “Mindful-by-the-Sea” offer tips, tools, and retreats in partnership with world-renowned teacher Dr. Rich Fernandez and Mindful magazine.
Newcomers to mindfulness – a popular practice that TIME magazine calls “the new science of health and happiness” – and seasoned meditators alike are welcomed to attend the retreats, as the focus for all will be on a “beginner’s mind,” where everyone brings their curiosity and gives the internal expert a break. Fernandez acknowledges he has been fortunate to meditate and teach mindfulness in some of the most beautiful places in the world, and Carmel needn’t take a backseat to any of those locations.
Central to the Mindful-by-the-Sea program are retreats led by Fernandez, one of the world’s leading mindfulness practitioners, who is CEO of Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (SIYLI). He co-developed SIYLI at Google and it is today’s leading program that teaches tools for focus, selfawareness, and resilience. Backed by world experts in neuroscience, mindfulness and emotional intelligence, SIYLI already has changed thousands of lives in more than 100 cities around the world.
“Carmel is home to one of my absolute favorite spots at Point Lobos,” he said. “I am thrilled to lead a series of retreats in Carmel-by-the-Sea and to bring the mindfulness experience to visitors. We will be exploring a range of practices that will help participants enjoy a deeper sense of relaxation, well-being, and continued on page 11

VISIT CARMEL INTRODUCES FITNESS & NUTRITION RETREATS Carmel-by-the-Sea also is a great destination for fitness fans, and Visit Carmel has launched the Carmel Fitness and Nutrition Retreats, featuring Jeff Galloway, a prolific author and popular columnist for Runner’s World magazine. During the two-day, three-night retreats, Galloway and his staff will introduce attendees to various scenic routes in and around Carmelby-the-Sea, provide expert advice on how to set up and attain one’s program goals and how to train for the next race, focus on nutrition for fitness with registered dietitian Carissa Bealert, and much more. They will be held at The Sunset Center in the heart of Carmel, just blocks from the ocean, both sitting inside and walking in nature. The next retreat is scheduled for March 7-9, 2018. In addition to the retreats, Visit Carmel, in partnership with Mindful magazine, has developed the Beginner’s Guide to Mindful-by-the-Sea, encouraging visitors to explore and experience the practices of mindfulness for a more fulfilling getaway and return to daily life.
