elcome to the Monterey Peninsula—a thriving area filled with culture, spectacular homes, world-class dining and entertainment—and surrounded by unspoiled beauty and nature. We consider our community one of the greatest places to live and vacation in the world. It’s been a busy summer for us, starting with the acquisition of Alain Pinel Realtors Carmel on June 1st. Next to Carmel Realty Company, Alain Pinel Carmel has been the second largest independently owned brokerage in Carmel. We are excited to welcome these expert agents into our brokerage family, and even more proud to note that we share the same values and commitment to relationships and our local community. Two world-class events bookend the summer. In June, the 2019 U.S. Open Championship launched spectators into the stratosphere of once-in-a-lifetime golf experiences, with 250,000 visitors coming to enjoy the top players in the world battling it out in Pebble Beach against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Congratulations to winner Gary Woodland, and to the USGA and Pebble Beach Company for hosting an event widely viewed by players and spectators as a huge success. The Course set-up and condition were major highlights, playing hard but fair. I got to play a round on Monday after the tournament concluded, and I saw firsthand how beautiful the fairways and greens played—and how difficult the bunkers and rough were. It’s humbling for an amateur golfer and a reminder of just how well the PGA professionals play the game. August caps off the summer with dozens of incredible events during Car Week, and Carmel Realty hosts clients, guests and friends from around the world at parties all over town, including at luxury oceanfront properties, where guests are given a firsthand chance to experience

how amazing the lifestyle can be in this idyllic community. Our feature with Indy 500 racecar champion Danny Sullivan explores his exceptional career and heroic “spin and win” victory over Mario Andretti at Indy in 1985. Moreover, we discover that Danny’s racing career took him to exotic places all over the world, yet he and his wife, Brenda, and their beloved furry family members, have found their ideal community in Pebble Beach. Sullivan found that he could enjoy all the positives of a smaller, close-knit community without forfeiting the cultural sophistication and major events of a larger city. In “Tales from the Turf,” Lynn Knoop, one of Carmel Realty’s most successful agents, a great golfer and extraordinary friend, tells how golf has enriched her life with lasting and meaningful relationships. As Lynn points out, the Monterey Peninsula is second to none when it comes to creating a life full of golf! One of the main reasons we are drawn to this community is its natural beauty and engaging indoor and outdoor lifestyles. Monterey Peninsula has some of the cleanest and most pure sea air, an incentive to get outdoors. In this edition, we cover four great places to enjoy outdoor cocktails and appetizers while socializing with friends. Nothing is more satisfying than finishing off a perfect game of golf or a beach walk with a relaxed light meal and drinks outside in one of the many picturesque outdoor dining environments. It’s impossible to sum up all the parts that add up to make this area so special, but we are here to help you find your own perfect version of what the area has to offer you. Dan Lynch Editor

CARMEL, CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA & SOUTH COAST

A magnificent ocean front 6,414-square-foot property which fronts a protected cove. Facing Point Lobos, this exquisite and environmentally conscious architecture showcases A four-level family- friendly residence. Clad in cedarwood and limestone—the materials are synonymous with neighboring Carmelby-the-Sea cottages, and as much a signature of the Monterey Peninsula as the area’s cypress trees. Viewed from above, the exposed rooftops sprout native plants, creating a striking aesthetic from every angle. The third-level, openplan living space is cantilevered to frame a sea view facing north out on the bay and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. The spectacular vista is best viewed from the master suite, where 9-foot-tall glass doors slide open onto a deckwrapped swimming pool and entertainment lanai perched on the cove’s edge.

SPIN WIN TO

I

n 1985, on the 120th lap of the Indy 500, racer Danny Sullivan attempted to pass Mario Andretti on the inside of turn 1, but instead launched into a smoky spin in his March-Cosworth.

Danny Sullivan’s Extraordinary Racing Career By Brett Wilbur

“I thought, ‘I’m going to crash and hit the wall,’” Sullivan says. “I was so mad at myself for losing control of the car. After the smoke cleared, I could see the turn 2 sweep in front of me and I just took my foot off the brake…I was going 212 mph when the spin started…I don’t remember which gear I took to get going, I think I went higher, and I almost lost control of the car again…I radioed in to my crew chief that everything was okay. He couldn’t see anything because at that time there weren’t all the monitors that they have now, and he didn’t know anything had happened, except my voice was a couple of octaves higher…I went on to win it. Miller was the sponsor and I was the new guy. After I won, when they stuck the mic in front of me, I just said, ‘It’s Miller Time!’ These guys went crazy and the next day I was on all three morning shows.”

They said I was one of the best to come through the school.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, to a family in the general contracting business, Sullivan was living in New York in 1971 during the end of the Vietnam Era, unsure of his direction, when family friend Dr. Frank Falkner, a racing enthusiast, paid for Sullivan to attend the Jim Russell Racing School in England as a 21st birthday present. “The caveat was, they said if I had talent, I could pursue racing as a career,” Sullivan recounts. “I was a waiter, not flush with money. They said I was one of the best to come through Continued on page 18

the school. I think they told everyone that so they would come back.” After driving his first race car, “a little Formula Ford,” Sullivan says, “It was everything I wanted to do in life. I was completely hooked. But it’s not like golf where you buy balls and shoes. The process became how do I raise the money [to compete].”

At the 1985 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, his first race for Penske, Sullivan’s March 85C ran out of fuel. “It was downhill, and I started pushing the car,” he says. “I was far enough ahead that I ended up finishing third.” The next day, the photo of Sullivan pushing his car over the finish line was in The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. With the help of an astute PR manager and an engaging personality, Sullivan landed magazine spreads in everything from People to Playgirl and appeared on television shows like “Miami Vice” and the “Tonight Show.”

We have lived in New York, LA and Aspen, but we fell in love with this area.

Sullivan describes the steps of getting sponsored as a marketing education, and he proved adept at it, moving around Europe for a total of 15 years depending on sponsorships (with stints in the States), driving F/Ford, F/3, F/2 and sports cars, competing at Can-Am and winning at Daytona with Porsche. Sullivan drove for the Benetton Tyrell F1 Team, had a sponsorship from Domino’s Pizza for Indy, and in 1984, was signed by Roger Penske to drive IndyCars. He became popular through his natural charm and grace under pressure.

After numerous career wins, including 17 in the CART IndyCar World Series, racing slowed down for Sullivan in the mid-’90s with two major racing injuries, including a shattered forearm and pelvis. Sullivan insisted on competing in the Indy 500 with a special arm brace before surgically repairing his forearm; being taken to a hospital via Air Evac after being rendered unconscious from the second major crash that shattered his pelvis gave him pause. “ABC walked into my hospital room and offered me a contract,” he says. “I didn’t want to give up racing, but I was 45 years old and it was not realistic to think I was at the top of my game anymore. I raced sports cars and off-road trucks (including at the Baja 1000) around my ABC contract. You can’t get it out of your system completely.”

After years of racing at Laguna Seca (including being on Paul Newman’s race team), playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and running the Red Bull Driver Search program at Laguna Seca, the Sullivans settled down on the Monterey Peninsula. “It suits us,” he says. Beach with wife Brenda, Sullivan says the small, beautiful village setting close to major cities is the perfect place for them, reminiscent of their time living in St. Tropez. Besides the myriad of golf courses, fellow car enthusiasts, and the enormous amount of Car Week events each August, the Sullivans love the climate and dog-friendly community. “We had three dogs when we moved here from France,” Sullivan says. “Now we have a rescue German Shepherd, Sadie, and a neighbor’s dog we care for, Ridgey, a Rhodesian Ridgeback. It’s dog heaven here.” Hiking throughout the Del Monte Forest, running the dogs at a variety of beaches, dining at dog-friendly places like the Cypress Inn, and spending time with friends is part of the charm that continues to keep the Sullivans thrilled with the Monterey Peninsula lifestyle. The two are very involved in local golf and car events, and Brenda is on the board of the SPCA while Sullivan is on the board of Laguna Seca. As for driving, the dogs enjoy riding in Sullivan’s large Canepa Denali, but Sullivan has some more sprightly vehicles. “I have a ’32 Ford hot rod, a ’59 A coupe Porsche, a one-off TT special motorcycle, plus a ’53 Vincent Black Shadow that won the Quail Motorcycle Gathering twice. I also have a Lawwill [motorcycle] that is one of only 17 made, and a BMW R9T [motorcycle], which means I don’t have to worry about traffic during Car Week,” he says. Sullivan has a ’53 Lancia Aurelia outlaw hot rod that he brings out during the car events.

…they said if I had talent, I could pursue racing as a career…

“It was built in a shop in England and there are only four in existence, and three are owned by people who live here,” Sullivan says. “There are a lot more car people here than you would think and there is a lot going on—I’ve got events booked out for almost a year.” For the Sullivans, the combination of small-town delights with world-class events makes for an idyllic living situation. “We have lived in New York, LA and Aspen, but we fell in love with this area,” Sullivan says. “100 yards from our house, there are trails where we can walk with our dogs for hours. We are minutes from The Lodge at Pebble Beach, golf courses, Community Hospital, the grocery store, Carmel and the Del Monte Shopping Center. It’s just an ideal spot.” ■

BIG SUR FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL

B

ig Sur is well known for the wild beauty of verdant cliffs meeting the churning Pacific; mountains full of Redwoods and sweet-smelling air; spots to stick your feet in the cool river tumbling over smooth rocks; and stunning beaches so breathtaking that one’s spirit feels part of something much greater. What’s perhaps lesser known is the caring community that supports each other during challenges such as the devastating 2016 Soberanes Fire and the landslides and flooding that followed. The area has since recovered and offers unique events to explore off the beaten path. CFO/Events Director Elsa Rivera runs the Big Sur Food and Wine Foundation, a nonprofit that hosts events like the Big Sur Food & Wine Festival. Beneficiaries from funds raised include Big Sur fire victims, the Big Sur Health Center, local schools, firefighting efforts, the Ventana Wildlife Society and more. Now in its fourth year, the 2019 Big Sur Food & Wine Festival juxtaposes culinary adventures with impossibly beautiful settings. The Magical Mystery Tour sells out quickly and is limited to 30 people who are greeted with champagne then taken by shuttle to several secret locations to dine al fresco. “We are very grateful to the residents in Big Sur who open up their homes to us,” Rivera says. “Guests meet a chef who is staged there with food and wine, and a docent who will explain the lore and culture of that land while they get to 34

nosh. Maybe some wild horses will walk by, and then later, they might end up under one of Big Sur’s famous bridges on a beach.” Another popular event, Hiking with Stemware, takes guests on a gentle to moderate hike in an undisclosed area of Big Sur, where wineries and chefs are staged along the trails. “You may have handmade sushi on a cliff in Big Sur, while your glasses are filled along the way,” Rivera says. The opening night of the festival is held at the iconic Ventana property overlooking the ocean, with top chefs and wineries on hand, while the largest public event, the Wine & Swine, takes place at the Henry Miller Memorial Library, with music and dancing in a clearing under the trees. An auction provides the most proceeds for the nonprofit’s beneficiaries; last year $80,000 was given to the Big Sur community. An important part of the event is to promote sustainability. “We as a festival are looking to organizations like the Monterey Bay Aquarium to collaborate with us in the experience of sustainability, with food and wine as the platform for it,” Rivera says. “We support that guests come and enjoy the area, but encourage them to tread lightly. We aim to gently educate on responsible travel in and out of Big Sur, while we share the culture of Big Sur itself.” The 2019 Big Sur Food & Wine Festival takes place November 7-9. Originally described as “A Spanish Palace by the Sea, Villa Eden Del Mar has long been considered one of the most renowned homes on the Monterey Coast and a treasured landmark in Pebble Beach. From this majestic estate and dramatically picturesque location, one sees everywhere titanic, tumbled granite boulders, worn and aged by the surf and studded with primordial Cypress trees. The beauty of this setting is magical. The entire property has been meticulously maintained and preserved over the years.

TALES TURF FROM THE

QA &

C

armel Realty Company’s Lynn Knoop approaches real estate and golf with a similar, elegant perspective: to enjoy moments of connecting with others while accomplishing goals. Lynn grew up in San Francisco but spent summers perfecting her tennis swing at John Gardner’s original camp in Pebble Beach. “We played from 9-12, had lunch, then played all afternoon,” she recalls. “We couldn’t help but get good at it.” As a youth, Lynn would shag balls for her father, an excellent amateur golfer and a member of the USGA Executive Committee in the ’50s. At age 35, after being sidelined from tennis due to a knee injury, she finally picked up some golf clubs. “I was around golf so much but didn’t play it. I took it up out of self-defense,” she laughs. Lynn started playing with her stepfather, an avid golfer, and through his connections, met presidents and ambassadors. “It gave me a reason to meet all these people,” she explains. When she started her real estate career in the late ’90s, golf became a natural part of her time with clients. “It opened up a lot of doors for me,” she says. Lynn is one of the top producing agents in Carmel and Pebble Beach. Her late husband, Fred “Frosty” Knoop, participated in the original road races in the Del Monte Forest in the 1950s. She has two daughters, four grandchildren, and an Australian Shepherd that loves to run on local golf courses. Lynn is on the board of the Community Hospital Foundation.

1913 Luxury by the Sea

Q: What is a particularly meaningful golf memory? A: When I played nine holes at Carmel Valley Ranch with my stepfather when he was 89. It was the last game he ever played. His stance was off, so I set him up so he hit the ball well and he went home a happy guy. It was fabulous. If I let him beat me, he was so happy.

Q: How do you combine golf with being a Realtor? A: When I moved down here, golf kept me connected to my friends and when I got into real estate, it gave me an extra leg up. I met a lot of clients through the game.

Q: What do you tell someone who is intimidated to start playing? A: Figure out the etiquette, play fast and be aware. The worst thing is when someone is not focused and plays slowly. All you have to do is play fast and you can’t throw your clubs!

www.CarmelRealtyCompany.com

Q: How did you develop your own game? A: I think the fact that I played tennis before helped me a lot. It took me about a year and I picked it up fairly quickly. There was a time in my life when I was a single digit [handicap] and I worked so hard to get there. I don’t know if it was legitimate. I think it was more of a ‘cocktail party’ 9. I am not that now! I don’t have a particularly great golf game, but I play as well as I can.

Q: Do you have a game that stands out as particularly well played? A: I was at Carmel Valley Ranch, and I was signed up to play with another gal, and they paired us up to play with two gentlemen who were clearly not happy to be playing with us. When we got to the 5th hole, I stood up and hit my shot over the water and put it in the hole. Their attitude changed after that! Continued on page 92

TALES TURF FROM THE

Q: Are there any memorable places you’ve explored due to golf? A: I’ve played in Scotland, England and Hawaii and all around the Monterey Peninsula and the San Francisco area. Most of my social activity is around golf. I have golf friends from Hawaii, England, New Zealand, the East Coast, Denver and Texas. I know after four hours on a golf course if I like someone or not!

Q: What is special about your golf friendships? A: Golf crosses generations. I started out playing with a woman 15 years older than me. I think I got to know my stepfather as well as anyone. There is tons of connecting and tons of camaraderie. Most of my friendships started on the golf course.

Q: How about playing with your own family? A: My grandson, Charlie, who is 15, has just taken up golf. It’s so fun to play with him. It gives us a chance to really visit. When is an old lady grandma going to get to hang out with their teenage grandson? It’s a door that really opened for us. He has one of the most beautiful swings. It’s going to be so much fun to keep this going with him.

92

1913 Luxury by the Sea

Q: What do you enjoy about the Monterey Peninsula the most? A: The climate is perfect. The air is about as clear as you can get. Growing up, I felt like I was coming home when I came here. It’s very welcoming. We live in an area where golf is king and there are some fantastic programs for young people to learn the game. I have a life here that I couldn’t really have duplicated anywhere else. ■

OUTDOOR HAPPY HOUR on the Monterey Peninsula

T

here’s just something that brings out an authentic joie de vivre when dining and imbibing al fresco, hence the term “happy” hour. With more restaurant options than ever before offering elegant outdoor seating in town, we rounded up some of the most picturesque places to relax with a drink and an appetizer while enjoying the Monterey Peninsula’s stunning settings and mild weather.

Seventh & Dolores

The Bench

Carmel-by-the-Sea

The Lodge at Pebble Beach

A steakhouse it is, but 7D is also a reflection of the abundance of the local area, with a seasonal menu that serves the best produce and seafood available. The bar menu is atypically well-rounded, offering oysters, a charcuterie board, salads, and “The Burger,” which is composed of Niman Ranch dry-aged beef, Filet Mignon and brisket whipped with bone marrow and served with Cognac roasted onions. Quench your thirst from the extensive wine list or with one of the carefully crafted cocktails while sitting on the outdoor patio of the former bank building.

There’s not much more relaxing than enjoying a cold drink at “the 19th hole” overlooking the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, while warmed by fire pits and gazing at the ocean. Fresh-made juices and puree-infused delicious cocktails, while woodfired flatbreads, an irresistible bread balloon, tangy salads, hearty pastas and seafood and meat dishes are prepared just-so on the The Bench’s well-curated menu. It’s an easy choice to order a variety of small plates to share.

Cypress Inn

Grasing’s Coastal Cuisine

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Lovely Doris Day, who co-owned the Cypress Inn with Denny LeVett for over two decades, recently passed away at age 97. The Carmel resident created a legacy of nonprofit work on the behalf of animals, and the Cypress Inn makes sure dogs are offered a warm welcome. Whether in Terry’s Lounge or in the courtyard, two- and four-legged guests are provided with delightful sustenance. Humans can enjoy expertly mixed cocktails, tapas and appetizers like Monterey Bay calamari, artichokes, Dungeness crab and curry lamb meatballs. Their furry friends prefer Yappy Hour with a muttini, and maybe a burger.

Grasing’s has long been a local favorite for excellent ambiance and superb bar and dining room fare, with a quaint outdoor patio that invites splitting appetizers like truffle white cheddar popcorn, fish and chips and pulled pork sliders. The new rooftop space steps up the game even more, providing an intimate setting to enjoy the bounty of the nearby fields, farms and sea. The seasonal menu serves Monterey Bay abalone, Blue Crab risotto, award-winning steaks, fish and pasta. A deep wine list presenting both local and worldwide vino has been honored by Wine Spectator, while the cocktails are some of the best in town.
