2 Editor’s Letter 1913 Luxury by the Sea EDITOR’S LETTER
There have been several extraordinary homes sold this year and Carmel Realty Company is responsible for establishing new record sales in both Pebble Beach and Big Sur. We already hold the record for the highest price sale in Carmel. This week, we are honored to bring to market arguably the most iconic home on The Peninsula. The Butterfly House, featured in this magazine, is truly one of the most recognizable homes on the West Coast. We hope you enjoy the incredible photos along with an enlightening interview with world-renowned designer, Jamie Bush, who helped the owners create this masterpiece that is so seamlessly connected to the natural beauty of its surroundings.
We hope you enjoy the magazine. Have a happy and healthy summer and second half of the year!
For those of us lucky enough to spend time here, we already know how outstanding the quality of life is on the Monterey Peninsula. It is energizing to see so many people enjoying our community this summer. The joy is amplified by the reality that our thriving community, new hotels, restaurants and retail stores are opening, and life is resetting with renewed optimism for a waning pandemic. In addition to our thriving businesses, the streets are bustling, and the outdoor areas: golf, hiking, beach, and more are all in active use. At the same time, the real estate market is shifting from the record sales and growth of 2020 and 2021. The frenzy of multiple offers is slowing down, placing more pressure on pricing. However, as the demand to live here continues to outpace supply, we believe our market will perform better than most markets across the country.
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is in full swing this summer and this issue of 1913 Magazine has a great article about our own Jamal Noorzoy, 30-year Realtor and lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, restorer, and collector of vintage Japanese motorcycles. We also are proud to feature Rob Thull, Carmel Realty’s longtime friend and client, who shares his passion for collecting and racing cars. Rob speaks to how lucky we are to have the world-class racetrack, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, here in our own backyard. In that same article, we speak with Ross Merrill, President of Laguna Seca Raceway Foundation, about several of the changes and improvements taking place at this world-famous racetrack. In our “Wine Not” feature, we celebrate the global relationship-building that two of our local restaurateurs do on our behalf in order to provide us with access to some of the world’s greatest wines. David Fink of Aubergine and Luca Restaurants and Kurt Grasing of Grasing’s Restaurant both work tirelessly to offer gourmet dinners paired with world-class wine, along with access and allocation to old and new winemakers across the globe.
We live in one of the greatest communities in the world and are receiving the accolades to prove it! Carmel-by-the-Sea has been voted one of the Best Small Towns in America by Condé Nast Traveler. Carmel Beach was recently named one of the 25 best beaches in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure. USA Today recognizes Carmel for having one of the best small town art scenes and Golf Digest currently includes five of our local golf courses in their Top 100 U.S. Golf Courses rankings.
We do not take living here for granted. Our company works continuously to give back and support all of those around us. We hope you’ll take a moment to view the list of nearly 200 nonprofits that, together with our agents, we support across The Peninsula. We also feature Carmel Realty agents, Christine Chin and Courtney Jones, and company Creative Director, Levi DeKeyrel, celebrating their service and support for rescue dogs, animals, and The SPCA of Monterey
TheCounty.magazine highlights several featured sales our agents have facilitated and as always, we have on display some of the most exceptional homes currently for sale across The Peninsula. Please reach out to us if there is ever anything we can do to assist you or your friends and family with any real estate activity.

“We worked from the outside in,” Bush explains. The structural integrity of the house was addressed, and the west wall was completely rebuilt with reinforced steel beams, which support the winged roof, and a wall of commercial grade View WITH JAMIE BUSH
the living experience of this home with its incomparable natural setting. This project was a combination of exceptional vision by the owners, in collaboration and partnership with Jamie Bush and his outstanding creative team in Los Angeles. We talked to Jamie about the historic transformation that went into creating the modern organic masterpiece that is today's Carmel Butterfly House. The magnitude of the restoration was substantial. “The house they bought is not the house they ended up with.” Bush says. Walls, windows, ceilings, floors, and many structural beams were all reinforced, removed or replaced. “Not only did we restore the building with integrity, but also with innovation for a modern lifestyle.”
INTERVIEW
The MetamorphosisButterfly’s Acclaimed for its extraordinary design and positioning, anchored on Carmel Point’s prominent granite outcrop, it’s no wonder that the world-famous Butterfly House has been featured in Architectural Digest 100, A Century of Style; and that the great room, pictured here, is also honored in Architectural Digest: The Most Beautiful Rooms in the World. Whilst the house is immediately recognizable to so many for its undeniable exterior architectural beauty, what most people don’t know is how elegantly and sensitively the current owners transformed the living space of this mid-century masterpiece. By engaging a world-renowned designer, Jamie Bush, they were able to integrate by the Sea
The planning was so incredibly detailed; it was like designing a ship, with a team of expert craftsmen and artisans who oversaw every detail, from the wirebrushed teak and hand-troweled plaster, to the painstaking craft required to install the sapele mahogany ceiling. “The team was literally restoring a piece of history that will live beyond them. The next owner will be a custodian of that piece of history,” says Bush.
Smart Glass. Each pane is a parallelogram and contains artificial intelligence technology between the glass, which senses and responds to heat and glare and automatically adjusts the level of tinting for complete customization and personal preference; a very modern, innovative and pricey solution deployed to enhance the experience of being in one of the world’s most beautiful rooms.

“It took brave vision for the owners,” Bush says, “coming from a big European city to step into this project, and trust us to recreate this iconic place.” In the reenvisioning of the design, it was essential to the owners that the property live and feel like a family home. In early discussions, Bush recognized the importance of how this extraordinary environment would shape the lives of the owner's children. “So few times in life do you have the chance to bestow on your children this kind of experience with nature,” he recalls the owners expressing.

The Butterfly's Transformation 1913 Luxury by the Sea
There is a vintage Brazilian root coffee table that is a contextual nod to bohemian Big Sur. The one-of-a kind custom turquoise lamp was crafted by Brooklyn ceramist Peter Lane, who also sculpted the free-standing ceramic totems, “Sylphion,” in the motor court. The unique driftwood handle to the front door was one that Jamie found in his personal collection. The vibe of the house is carefree organic modernism. A spiritual connection to nature was promontory. You feel a calmness surrounded by beautiful undulating kelp, playful otters, dolphins, sunsets and moonsets, and rugged rocky outcroppings. Like a National Geographic special, day to day you witness pods of whales or orcas from your living room; ever-changing nature is on display as an artJamieform.spent many days alone at the Butterfly House and says he fell in love with the harmony and felt embraced by nature, a rare experience in today’s world. “You can’t help but be affected. It’s a profound experience that brings deep contentment and happiness to whoever spends their days in the Butterfly House.” ■
“When we started taking back the walls, it felt like we were on an archaeological dig,” Bush recalls. Throughout the house they uncovered original brick and glass block windows which were reclaimed and integrated into the design in different areas. Craftsmen masterfully handmolded new bricks to match the originals and to create a seamless new experience in the interior galleries, entry and lanai. The hand-troweled plaster walls are etched with a vertical laser; the hammered granite and quartzite flagstone flooring extends into the driveway and the courtyard, intentionally blurring the interior and exterior landscapes. “The interiors are intentionally varied in materiality and tone combined with a brutalist element that reflects the rugged coastline, whilst still achieving a warm, harmonious and organic feeling in the house.”
“It was important to create intimacy of spaces and warmth, so that when you close the doors and windows you have a cocooning effect,” Bush says. He often felt like a time-traveler going from the 1950s mid-century to the innovation of this project in the twenty-first century, adapting the house to suit a modern-day family.
The sculptural firewall, commissioned by renowned ceramist, Stan Bitters, is intended to mirror the colors of the ocean and the drama of the surrounding rocky landscape.Tactileand organic modern textures were selected, including the primary dressing room, which is clad in pale gray and mauve cork, with crystalline elemental highlights similar to those seen when the sun touches the rocks along the coastline. Rugs made of hemp and silk, bleached white oak, and wire-brushed teak all evoke a connection to nature. “It feels like it was already there, and the scale is intended to be perfectly imperfect,” Bush explains. It was essential the furnishings melded into the house. “Light, airy and organic. In the living room, there is a Tibetan round rug in an eroded beach seashore texture and a sofa by de Sede, which is serpentine and sculptural, and can be viewed from many angles. We fell in love with Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues, and his rosewood mid-century chairs with Mongolian bolsters and their exaggerative forms and gestures have elemental weight and heft that can hold their own and compliment the architecture.”

Realtor Doug McKenzie includes photos of SPCA animals looking for homes in his real estate ads, while CRC Creative Director Levi DeKeyrel rescued his Rottweiler mix Beatrice from the SPCA’s Ruff Start program. Ruff Start pairs dogs that need extra care with inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison who provide training and socialization for 8 weeks. The inmates are given a sense of purpose and experience the pride of helping an animal in need and getting them ready for adoption.
“It’s a win-win,” DeKeyrel says. “Beatrice was extremely sick before entering the program and got aggressive from the stress of undergoing surgery, which the SPCA funded, along with the expense of her recovery. Bea is now the friendliest dog ever. I’ve never had a big dog be so cuddly.”Carmel Realty Company Realtor Christine Chin has two pups: Pippin, a long-haired Dachshund that she adopted from a fellow real estate agent, and Piper, a champagne-colored Chihuahua (named for the Piper-Heidsieck label), whom she rescued from a shelter. “We love going downtown,” Chin shares. “Stores like Tiffany’s put out bowls of water for the dogs. And many of the restaurants have water and cookies for the dogs and there are lots of dog-inspired shops.”
Fellow Carmel Realty Company Realtor Courtney Jones also has two dogs rescued from the SPCA (and 28 fish, 8 chickens and bees!) at her home in Carmel Valley.

“I’m new to the board,” Chin says. “We have adopted from the SPCA in the past and they have so many great programs… They have a spay and neuter program, and during COVID, they gave out free pet food, no questions asked…I really love that they partner with Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula to make sure that seniors who are receiving meals are also getting food for their pets. They discovered that many seniors were giving their dinners away to their animals and made sure that they provided them with pet food. That touched me a lot…They continue to step up and take care of needs in the community. They go much deeper than just their adoption program.”

Jones’ father was on the SPCA board before her, and her mother has volunteered at the SPCA’s benefit shop for decades, so it was a natural fit for her to join the board.
“I love animals,” Jones says. “They are my passion. I chose the SPCA because it isn’t just about dogs and cats. It’s about the barn they have for farm animals, their wildlife center, their humane investigations and their disaster response, among many other programs.”Jones’dog, who recently passed, was named Olivia Newton Jones. A rescue from another shelter, she smoothed the way for Jones to meet people as a new mom, while pushing her daughter around Carmel in a stroller.
“People were more interested in the dog than the baby,” Jones laughs. “She was truly my best friend…I realized I live in a place that’s not only beautiful and safe, but full of like-minded people. Everyone here loves dogs.” ■

50 Shifting Gears 1913 Luxury by the Sea
By Brett Wilbur
Shifting Gears
Realtor Jamal Noorzoy is a thirdgeneration resident of Pebble Beach, where, as a teenager, he explored the area on motorcycles. Noorzoy started off riding his older brother’s bikes: sport café racers like a Honda 350 four cylinder, along with Yamaha dirt bikes. As a youth, Noorzoy participated in a summer program known as the California Superbike School at Laguna Seca Raceway (now WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca). The school provided riders with bikes, leathers, boots and helmets, along with classroom lessons and a real race environment.Noorzoylearned to work the track, flagging corners and using radios to control the speed of a race, and as part of the reward, he got to race around the track on a Kawasaki GPz550 and experience the exhilaration of navigating the famous corkscrew turn. To his surprise, his parents let him buy a Honda CB350 when he was 16, and he hasn’t stopped riding, collecting and tinkering with motorcycles since.“As the commercials said at the time, ‘You always meet the nicest people on a Honda,’” he says. These days, son Robert, 19, has taken to riding more aggressively on and off road, while Noorzoy sticks to the paved roads and restoring his collection of vintage Japanese motorcycles.
Riding, Restoring & Collecting Vintage Motorcycles
Q: How much of your time have you spent riding on a paved course or road versus a dirt trail or track?
Q: What type of bikes does Robert ride?
Continued on next page
A: It’s fun to ride a bicycle, but on a motorcycle, it’s another level of being out in the environment and riding free with nature. It’s fun. You get into a rhythm while you are riding, especially on a sport bike. You’re controlling your momentum and inertia and it’s very enjoyable to be able to command a 400-pound machine and master its capabilities and performance.
CarmelRealtyCompany.com 51
A: I mainly stayed with street riding. My son Robert gravitated toward riding electric motorcycles since he was 6 or 7 years old. He had a little electric Razor to ride around our front yard. He showed a natural affinity toward it. Then he got into dirt bikes and street bikes. He got his license to drive a car and a motorcycle when he was 16. His mom [Jamal’s wife CeCe] was nervous, but I was there with him every step of the way. At his age, he has spent much more time on trails and going to regional parks than I ever did… Robert’s very brave. He likes all things that let you control your own destiny…He also now has his pilot’s license and is close to flying an airplane solo.
Q: What specifically appeals to you about riding motorcycles as opposed to other modes of transportation?
A: Robert has a Yamaha YZ250x, it’s a new bike but an old-school style, a single cylinder, two-stroke: a real performance bike for off-roading. There are no headlights, turn signals, or anything. It’s very light and very fast...His street bike is a Yamaha R6, which is state-of-the-art today for café racer bikes.
A: My favorite bike is one of the rarest of all: a restored and rebuilt 1979 Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special. It’s the last in that series of those two-stroke bikes that were
52 Shifting Gears 1913 Luxury by the Sea but you can see how they are all molded processes and can look similar to each other. Back then they were much more individual…and are objects of art as well.
Q: What is your favorite motorcycle in your collection?
Q: How do your wife and daughter feel about motorcycle riding?
Q: What is it that inspires you to collect the bikes that you rode growing up?
Q: What was your most memorable experience you had riding motorcycles as a youth?
A: By far, I would have to say the time a group of us rode through Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta, Canada. I was in high school, and there was a group of us all on different types of motorcycles. I had the smallest motorcycle, so there were times I was riding by myself through the Rocky Mountains. Back then, the route was lightly traveled so until we camped for the night, I was often the only one on the road. It was an incredible experience with the snowcapped mountains on all sides and a lot of wildlife to watch as we rode by. ■
A: There are a few different reasons why I revived my love for vintage Japanese motorcycles. It’s the thing I used to do all the time, so I’m bringing that back into my life. Also, they were beautiful machines and well-crafted. It’s not necessarily that they possess the technology that’s in place today, but the design of the motorcycles was very pleasing to the eye. When you look at the modern street bikes today, a lot of them look a lot alike… With the old vintage ones, you could see them from a block away and tell if it was a Honda or a Suzuki. Each one had their own classic design and features and their ownPeoplesound.who collect these bikes have an appreciation for old school mechanics. The bikes were both simple back then yet substantial. Motorcycles today are great, produced for street use, and they made a limited number of them. The name comes from the fact that Kenny Roberts, a famous racer, won the Daytona race in Florida on the race version of that bike. They were high-performance for the day and are very collectible.
A: We have collected a couple of Honda Metropolitan scooters that are very tame machines you can ride around the neighborhood. My daughter Austin, who is 22, will ride them with me, but she is a very accomplished equestrienne and prefers horseback riding to motorcycles. My wife CeCe will admire them from afar but won’t come close to sitting on a motorcycle.
Q: Do you ride the collectible bikes?
A: Yes. They are all registered and street legal and insured and I take them out. Our garage is a functionally rideable museum…Among other bikes, I collect the Yamaha 1970s’ RD 400 series twostrokes. I also collect Hondas, which are very nice four-stroke classic bikes with an appealing design. I have a Suzuki twin two-stroke, and I’m trying to collect the entire series for different classes of Hondas, Suzukis and Yamahas. So far, I don’t have any vintage Kawasakis, but I’m always looking.

Due to the relationships that Fink has with wine distributors, he is able to maintain his exemplary wine list.

“If you have a good restaurant or hotel, and you’ve been a good customer of certain wineries, then generally speaking you’ll get an allocation of those wines,” he shares. Many of the top wineries, domaines and chateaus are experiencing a world-wide demand.“While some collectors see these wines as investments, we never look at it that way,” Fink says. “We look at them as great wines to be enjoyed by our guests at a fair price. But it’s just been crazy. There’s just not enough fine wine to go around.”Finkpoints to the wine region of Burgundy as the location for the most highly sought-after wines in the world.
“One of the reasons for Burgundy’s popularity is because it’s smaller than a region like Bordeaux, or Tuscany,” he says. “Burgundy makes many fewer bottles, and the quality hasThesoared.”2019 vintage for Burgundy is spectacular for both the whites and the reds, he says, with most of those wines already snapped up by eager buyers.

During Monterey’s Car Week in August, events include the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which takes place Wednesday through Saturday, August 1720, 2022, at Laguna Seca. Plus, Porsche Rennsport Reunion will be returning in 2023.Private
In 1957, the Pebble Beach Road Races were moved to the newly built track at Laguna Seca in the aftermath of a racer crashing his Ferrari into a tree and suffering fatal injuries. Now known as WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the track, famous for its difficulty and corkscrew turn, which drops nearly 60 feet in elevation, has hosted countless world-class motorcycle and car racing events, including the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest, Trans Am SpeedFest, Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey-IndyCar Series, ISMA Sports Car Series, and much more.

“It’s like a miniature IndyCar that many of the professional racers used when starting their careers…It’s perhaps the most competitive area of car racing… There can be more than 50 cars in an individual race in the field, where every car is exactly the same: same motor, same tires, same everything. It’s a very exciting form of racing, and relatively inexpensive compared to Formula 1 or Formula Atlantic, the really high-end vintage

80 Getting on Track 1913 Luxury by the Sea
By Brett Wilbur
Equity/Transportation Equipment Leasing expert Rob Thull is a Carmel resident and participant in the Rolex Reunion, which brings hundreds of historic cars onto the track to be raced by their owners. For his sixth year, Thull is racing his 1972 Titan MK 6 #98-Formula Ford at various racetracks in the West.
“I’m part of the folks that race in the vintage racing groups—four different ones—cars from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and the ’80s,” he explains. “I race in what’s called an open-wheel class, which is called Historic Ford and Club Ford.
Before Laguna Seca Raceway was developed in the late 1950s, sports car races took place on the twisty, narrow (and dangerous) dirt roads throughout the Del Monte Forest in Pebble Beach. Those exciting events cemented the traditions of auto racing on the Monterey Peninsula, now celebrated each August through an ever-growing plethora of unique and extraordinary events throughout Monterey County, that showcase rare and significant classes of cars, motorcycles, and even airplanes.

Merrill says that the track is iconic for multiple reasons. “First of all is the history it has, going back to 1957 for sports car racing…Since then, there has been a lot of Rob Thull races a 1972 Titan MK 6 #98-Formula Ford at the Rolex Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca history with motorcycle and auto racing. It’s become world renowned for its unique character, the beauty of its location, the history of the racing that has occurred there over the decades, and its proximity to all the amenities that exist on the Monterey Peninsula. Combined with the weather we get here, which is really mild year-round, it adds up to an equation that doesn’t exist on other racetracks.”
Thull grew up in Michigan, where he says he became a “‘gearhead’ at birth,” go-karting, riding minibikes and motorcycles…eventually collecting over 75 bikes over the years.
“I’m down to only four motorcycles now,” he says. “An all-time low!” Thull has an Aston Martin DB 11 and a Corvette Stingray, among other vehicles in his garage, but says the most fun he has driving is on the track, where he can have an adrenaline rush in a safe setting and enjoy being with friends who share a love of the sport.
Ross Merrill is the President of the Laguna Seca Raceway Foundation, an independent nonprofit that raises funds to finance improvements at the facility.
“I’ve been coming down here since the late ’70s for races before I ever lived here,” Thull says. “It’s a world-famous track, and so many people on the Peninsula have never been inside the gates of Laguna Seca…It’s the most overlooked area of excitement and opportunity that people should at least contemplate or consider.”
82 Getting on Track 1913 Luxury by the Sea Merrill is an amateur racer himself, who grew up in earshot of the track, and a third generation Salinas Valley farmer.
“That’s what led to my position at the Raceway Foundation,” he says. “Just this past May, we had our significant fundraising event at the track, called Laps for Laguna. We held a weekendlong vintage race to benefit the track with over 250 race cars, charity rides for sale, Cars and Coffee, and a VIP dinner at the Pavilion with the 1985 Indianapolis 500 winner (and former Pebble Beach resident) Danny Sullivan. As a big surprise to Danny, Mario Andretti called in during theThdinner.”ebenefit event is going to come back next year, after upgrades to the track take place. “There are plans to install a new bridge across the start/finish area and to repave the track this winter,” Merrill shares.Oneof the objectives of the Foundation is to get newcomers to understand that the track is something exciting to explore, regardless of anyone’s familiarity with racing.“Itis a very valuable community asset, but there are a lot of locals who don’t know much about it,” Merrill says. “During Laps for Laguna, we had a vocational high school based in Salinas bring a busload of kids who are taking a car restoration program out to the track. A lot of them had never been to the track before, and they will be learning how to take care of vintage cars at school. It was right in their wheelhouse, interest-wise. Building that community engagement is something we are trying to do more of through the Laps forMerrillLaguna.”and the Foundation Board are also contemplating the idea of bringing go-karting to the track and technology demonstrations with electric car racing.
“One of the things that excites me for the future is what we can do with technology,” he says. “With electric-racing and other new technologies, there won’t be the noise of traditional racing either. With our proximity to Silicon Valley, it’s a natural fit for the sport, and along with cycling events, there’s a lot of potential for growth at Laguna Seca.”
■ Ross Merrill, president of the Laguna Seca Raceway Foundation, is also the proud father of Thomas (top left), who recently placed at Le Mans. Ross’ 1970 Porsche 911ST (top right) will be running the Rolex Reunion again this year.
“I used to hike up to the track as a kid and watch racing,” Merrill says. Merrill’s entire family bonds over race time: he and his wife Lauren used to race against each other at Porsche Club events, and he says the activities at Laguna have always been part of their family life. That led to racing go-karts with his sons Thomas and Jonathan, who also enjoyed amateur racing as a family. “Thomas is now a pro driver, who just won a podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year!” Merrill shares.
