elcome to a New Year! We are certainly hopeful that some of the enormous challenges of 2020 will lead to some very positive shifts in 2021. Our real estate market last year was significantly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. The market came to a complete halt in April as a result of the first stay at home order. In that moment, we were all somewhat uncertain as to what might happen in the coming months. Now we know. By summer, we were experiencing an extraordinary surge in demand and selling more homes than any other time in history. By the end of 2020, almost every market on the Peninsula experienced record sales in the number of units sold and in total sales dollars. We say this with great humility and compassion as we know so many businesses have been very negatively impacted by this pandemic. If there is a silver lining, we believe it is that the significant increase in real estate sales is bringing more families into our community as permanent residents. We have gotten to know a number of these families, who seem to share our passion for this vibrant area where we can enjoy nature and living in smaller, closer-knit communities. These families will be sending their children to our schools, shopping in our local stores and hopefully, one day soon, eating at our wonderful restaurants. We believe this positions our community to recover at an accelerated rate. It’s a recovery that our restaurant and local business owners desperately need. Our community has experienced such an influx in demand because of the incredible lifestyle made available here. In this edition of 1913 Magazine, we

highlight just a few of the amazing things people can enjoy while living on the Peninsula. Golf is one of the most obvious sought-after amenities in our area. To get a unique and fascinating perspective, we spoke with award-winning sportswriter Alan Shipnuck. He is a brilliant, funny and informed golfer who expounds on the reasons why Monterey County courses are among the best in the world. In addition, we have an inspiring story on how lucky we are to have access to great surfing on beautiful local beaches and the uniquely rejuvenating experience of spending time in the ocean. This easy access to the outdoors is especially valuable today for our youth, as it offers a much-needed counterbalance to the challenging confinement of studying at home and the lack of school team sports. On another note, with all the shifts in dining, we need to be supporting our local restaurants now more than ever. For most of us who have been ordering out for over 300 days now, variety is king. In this issue, we’ve rounded up some great dining picks with food from around the world. We hope you’ll enjoy trying some of our favorites. Of course, throughout this magazine we share some of the most striking real estate available in the market. As always, please reach out to us if there is anything we can do to assist you or your friends and family with any real estate activity. Best wishes for a great 2021, Dan Lynch Editor

ariety is important, now more than ever, and one of the easiest ways to experience cultures from around the world without leaving your house is through exploring different cuisines. Due to the pandemic, local restaurants have had to revamp their food service from inside dining, to takeout meals, back to inside dining with modifications in place, to special outside setups and at press time, back to takeout options only. Restauranteurs have since become very proficient in preparing food that will travel well and taste just as good eaten at home as it would in their establishments.
Getting food to go provides not only a respite from shopping for ingredients, cooking and then cleaning the kitchen, but it has also become a fun experience to explore diverse menus that we wouldn’t typically prepare at home. It’s also a crucial way to support restaurants right now so that they can stay in business during the most recent round of restrictions. We polled our agents and here’s our top picks for local multicultural dining options.
Cultura Comida y Bebida in downtown Carmel is influenced by Oaxacan family style meals and prepared with local seasonal ingredients. Dinner boxes, including a new vegan option, are an easy way to feed the entire family delights like pozole, tamales and tacos. Tequila-based to-go cocktails by the bottle are a refreshing compliment to the heat that treats like chicken tinga can kick up.
Mexican Michael’s Grill and Taqueria in Pacific Grove is a longstanding local favorite that subscribes by the philosophy that their food is “good enough for mama.” You won’t go hungry with the generous portions of traditional Mexican crowd pleasers like tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, tostadas and burritos. Freshly made guacamole and tortilla chips, taquitos, and a 7-layer dip make for amazing appetizers.

Crystal Fish was opened in Monterey over 15 years ago by Chef Tamotsu Suzuki, from Tokyo, who trained as a sushi chef in Japan. The restaurant touts its traditional and California fusion preparation of favorites like sushi, udon, teriyaki and tempura. For something unique, try a green mussel shooter with quail egg, a smokey sake miso kama, or Japanese KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken).
Sushi Sushi Heaven in Carmel has been popular since it opened in 2003, and whether you want a 911 (shrimp, avocado, salmon roll), dynamite (sea urchin, flying fish roe and quail egg), or mama’s boy (crab, nuts and sauce), you’re definitely going to enjoy it. There are endless combinations of teriyaki, tempura, udon, and appetizers to please even the pickiest palate.
Mediterranean Dametra Café is full of ambiance, from the owners who greet each guest warmly, to the staff who sing, play instruments, and invite diners to dance alongside them during their meals. While the in-person revelry is temporarily on hold, yummy treats like hummus with warm pita bread, fried Monterey Bay calamari, spanakopita, pizzas and gyros are available to eat in the comfort of your own home. Ambrosia India Bistro has two Monterey locations, one in downtown and one on Cannery Row, but for now, you can enjoy naan varieties, rice with prawns, lamb, chicken and veggies, tandoori sizzlers, seafood, lamb and chicken curries, soups and salads, plus vegan and vegetarian options from this popular restaurant to go.
Specialty Cuisine Le Soufflé is a newer dining option in Carmel that is centered around the delightful dish it is named after. Due to the difficulty of transporting soufflés, the owners are currently offering a takeaway menu that includes a baguette and housemade butter, house cured salmon and a watercress salad, French lentil vegetable soup, rack of lamb, chicken, apple puree and French macarons.
While the above list is by no means comprehensive, it provides you with a sample of the many restaurants who have persevered during the pandemic and are committed to their patrons to produce excellent, authentic, creative cuisine to go. Try the latest trend of sampling from more than one restaurant at one meal and offer your family food from around the world at your dinner table. ■

A magnificent architectural masterpiece oceanfront 6,670 sqft property which fronts a protected cove. This exquisite and environmentally conscious architecture showcases a 4 level family-friendly residence with open walls of windows to the sea. Clad in cedarwood and limestone - the materials are synonymous with neighboring Carmel-by-the-Sea cottages, and as much a signature of the Monterey Peninsula as the area’s Cypress trees. The living roof creates a striking aesthetic from every angle. The third level, open plan living space is cantilevered to frame a sea view and Point Lobos. The spectacular vista is best viewed from the master level, where 9-foot-tall glass doors slide open onto a deck-wrapped swimming pool and entertainment lanai perched on the cove’s edge. 4 minutes to town, Starbucks, groceries and restaurants with the privacy and splendor of Big Sur.

L
ast June, after what felt like a million years of sheltering in place during the pandemic and becoming a reluctant home school assistant teacher to my extremely frustrated first grader, freedom arrived in the form of gently breaking waves. At Del Monte Beach in Monterey, the nonprofit group The Wahine Project opened small cohorts in four-week segments (we ended up choosing 8 weeks) that allowed children to safely boogie board and surf while social distancing. The organization’s goal is to provide safe access to the ocean for youth across diverse backgrounds, while also educating them about the environment. After a temperature check and being outfitted with a colorful rash guard, my 7-year-old son Caden broke free of my hand and tore down the sandy cliffs, literally somersaulting until he reached the water’s edge, where he gleefully started digging holes and kicking up wet sand like an exuberant Labrador Retriever. Two of my dear friends, who we hadn’t seen in months, signed up their sons into the same cohort, and upon reuniting, the three boys chased each other in circles while I watched from the bluffs above. A rock of stress that had been clamped around my chest suddenly lifted off as I heard the laughter ringing out from my son who had been without his friends for months.
I tried to rinse them off with a hose, then galloped away to bounce on our backyard trampoline. They brought rocks and pieces of broken shells and driftwood home from the beach, creating a pile that is still outside my front door. Caden told me about riptides and sneaker waves. He showed me how to tell which way the wind was blowing. His enthusiasm and the structure of getting out of the house each day and staring at the sea calmed me and allowed me time to process my own complicated pandemic emotions. I showed up to surf camp early one day with my camera, amazed to see Caden standing up on a surfboard, carving through the waves, watching the boys throw sand at each other, and eating their snacks on wet towels, all while exhibiting pure bliss. We started heading to Carmel Beach on weekends to get the boys in the water with boogie boards and to have time outside with each other even more. Things were still tough; but surfing was our salvation. “In a normal year, my son would have been at a regular day camp and we would never have experienced 40 plus days of surfing,” one of my friends remarked. “He’s always going to remember this summer.” Continued on page 38
Three hours later, I picked up the boys, who had decided after catching waves to turn themselves into “sand cookies” and were encrusted from head to toe with sand caked onto their damp wetsuits. Their cheeks glowed from the chilly water and the sunshine, and we drove up to In-and-Out Burger to pick up milkshakes and burgers while they chattered excitedly. At home, the irritability and pent-up energy from days of sitting at a computer screen trying to learn lessons was gone. Caden left sandy footprints through the house, showered, ate some more, and fell into a deep sleep. My friends and I developed a rhythm for the next 8 weeks, with the parents in our small cohort taking turns carpooling and getting the kids an early dinner together after surf camp. After peeling them out of their wetsuits, the boys perched on the stone steps outside my house, eating slices of pizza while

Carmel Realty Company owners Dan and Shelly Lynch’s son Parker also found surfing to be the perfect diversion from the stress of Zoom calls and distance learning. He says he was sleeping late and missing seeing his friends initially during the pandemic. Parker, 16, currently a sophomore at Stevenson High School, now gets up early and starts his mornings at the beach with friends before being glued to his computer for distance learning. “My school schedule is from 2-6 pm, and then I have homework,” he shares. “So it’s really nice to be able to surf in the morning and get my head wet and be in nature before being on the screen.” After shocking his system with cold ocean water, getting in the fresh air and being in the waves, he feels inspired and ready to face his day. “The adrenaline rush while you are catching a wave is exciting,” he says. “It’s worth all the fails.” With plenty of nearby surf spots from Carmel Beach to Spanish Bay and Asilomar and mild weather, Parker says he gets to surf year-round with a great group of buddies. “We aren’t allowed to hang out at each other’s houses anymore,” he says. “So it’s really nice to see my friends while social distancing in the water. It feels more like when we were at school together.”
Courtney Jones, a Carmel Realty Company Realtor, loves when her 11-year-old son Blake has an opportunity to surf. “It’s such a good outlet for him, especially during remote learning, to stay active and be outside,” she says. “He comes home tired and happy.” Blake, who is a 6th grader at Santa Catalina School, initially learned how to surf through the Wahine Project, and now goes with friends to various local beaches. “In Carmel there are bigger waves and it’s more intense, and in Monterey it’s more chill,” he says. Since COVID-19, he’s found himself heading out to surf more frequently. “I like being in the moment, on the wave,” Blake says. “It feels good and it’s a confidence boost.” Continued on page 42

Fourteen-year-old Diego, an 8th grader at Stevenson School, is the son of Liam Doust of Monterey Coast Realty. It’s peaceful.”
expanded their programming during the pandemic to offer ocean school classes and Surf PE, along with their co-ed camps, boys camps, girls camps, break week camps, and Saturday groups. In an email to families at the end of last summer, The Wahine Project founder Dionne Ybarra asked, “tell us what else we can offer to help.”
Diego finds being at the beach a way to be outside and part of a group. “I’ve enjoyed conversing with kids my age,” he says.
Ybarra stated, “We have the flexibility to be creative. We also want to ensure equity in access for every session. Please contact us if your family would benefit from a scholarship. NO ONE will miss out due to finances!”

last summer have been long lasting. We now find ourselves regularly checking the surf reports, and when we’ve had a challenging day of at-home school, Caden can slip on his wetsuit and release all his stress into the water, either with a friend or family member nearby. According to Ybarra, that’s the beauty of making surfing accessible to kids. “We believe the ocean and some sort of togetherness will support us and help us thrive as a community during this time of change,” she said. ■

Sportswriter Alan Shipnuck Explains the Gift of Golf By Brett Wilbur
“I always knew I wanted to be a sportswriter,” he says. “I was reading Sports Illustrated when I was 10 years old.” While attending UCLA, he worked at The Daily Bruin, preInternet, helping fill 30 pages of sports content every day. “It was like working for The LA Times,” he says. “It was incredible. I was flying to football and basketball games in Arizona, Washington and Oregon. So by the time I was 20 years old, I’d been a sportswriter for half my life.” One of Shipnuck’s many lucky breaks occurred at Pebble Beach Golf Links, where he was working as a “cart boy” and met Sports Illustrated Managing Editor Mark Mulvoy, who would come to Pebble Beach every summer. “I met Mulvoy when I was about to graduate Salinas High and I told him my dream in life was to write for his magazine,” Shipnuck says. “He was nice enough to give me his card. So

armel Valley resident Alan Shipnuck started his career as the editor of the newspaper at Washington Middle School in Salinas and as a 16-year-old stringer for The Salinas Californian covering high school sports.
for two years while I was an undergrad at UCLA, I wrote him letters updating him on my progress at The Daily Bruin, which of course he didn’t really care about. But when he came out again in the summer of ’93, I was waiting for him and after some schmoozing, he offered me an internship. I took a year off from UCLA and moved to New York City. By the end of my internship, I ended up writing a cover story for SI [on Ken Griffey, Jr.]…which secured my place at the magazine.” Shipnuck returned to L.A., finished his degree in Mass Communications, and on the day he graduated, became the youngest staff writer in Sports Illustrated history. For nearly 25 years, Shipnuck worked at the famous sports magazine, producing dozens of cover stories, receiving multiple writing awards, and honing his interest in golf both as a writer and a player. In 2018, he switched to working full time at Golf Magazine/ GOLF.com, where he remains as a senior writer. He’s also penned six books, which include best-sellers “Bud, Sweat & Tees” and “The Swinger” (co-authored with Michael Bamberger) and is currently completing a biography of Phil Mickelson.
“My journey is very much tied into local golf,” he says. “This area attracts so many interesting people in the golf world who are passionate about the sport and my big break happened on the first tee of Pebble Beach.” Q: What are some of your sports writing career highlights? A: I’ve covered 25 Masters and more than 90 of golf ’s major championships. The Olympics in Atlanta and Rio. Two Super Bowls, the NCAA basketball tournament. I’ve interviewed so many folks. I’ve written SI cover stories on Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Bubba Watson, Michael Phelps (right after Beijing), Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Tim Tebow, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson and Leonard Fournette. Q: How did you get from working in sports media in the heart of New York to living back on the Monterey Peninsula? A: We started having kids at a furious pace and most of the grandparents were back here…so we moved to Carmel almost eight years ago. We lucked into an amazing house in Carmel Valley this summer. With four teenagers doing athome learning, having the extra space is crucial. Continued on page 70

Q: Where did you pick up the sport? A: No one in my family really played golf. But my mom had a boyfriend who was a golfer who introduced me to the game when I was 13. We’d go out to Quail Lodge and play. My first job at age 16 was as a cart boy at Quail. On my lunch hour, I’d listen to the teaching pros give their lessons and try to steal a few ideas. And I had those three summers as a cart boy at Pebble Beach where I fell in love with the game. Q: At what point did you progress into a more accomplished golfer? A: My current index is a 7.1. I’m just good enough to always be frustrated that I’m not better. I don’t play as much golf as I could or should. With four kids and a busy day job and two ongoing book projects, I’m lucky if I play three or four times a month. And I don’t practice very much. I’m just trying to maintain. I always say that when my kids drift away to the real world, that’s when I’m going to get serious and work on my game. I could just be kidding myself. But I love playing the game, and because of my day job, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to play all over the world. It’s been quite a ride. I’ve played everywhere from New Zealand to Australia, all over Scotland, Ireland, really out of the way places like Morocco, and remote courses in the Alps. It’s just amazing where the game can take you. I’m blessed in that regard. And also, it’s just so much about the people you play with. Most of my best friends are passionate about the sport….It’s an incredible vehicle to spend time with people you care about.

Q: What is it about the Monterey Peninsula that is unusually special for golfers? A: I’ve played all over the world and had access to all these private exclusive golf courses, but Pebble Beach will always be my favorite golf course. We are so blessed locally. People do come from all over the planet to play golf on the courses that are in our backyard. There’s no golf course that’s more beautiful and dramatic than Pebble Beach, that’s more elegant than Cypress Point, that’s a greater challenge than Spyglass Hill. I think Monterey Peninsula Country Club is the greatest 36-hole club on the planet, although the folks at Royal Melbourne might disagree. To have two courses that good that play and look so different is really remarkable. And then you have the Preserve, such a pastoral setting in the sunshine that is an incredible getaway. You can go to other side of the Bay to play Pasatiempo, which is a top 100 course and one of Alister MacKenzie’s masterworks. Bayonet/Blackhorse is a really strong 36hole public facility. I absolutely love PG Muni, it’s just to me what golf is all about: it’s quirky and fun and affordable. A great
melting pot. Overall, you just can’t beat the quantity and the quality we have here. Even in a pretty tight geographic area, there’s so much diversity. From the huge sand dunes at Cypress, to the rocky headlands at Pebble, to the deep forests that envelop Poppy Hills and Spyglass, to the hilltop vistas at Tehama or Pasadera, we just live in one of the most incredible places in all of nature and the courses reflect that. Q: What are some good local courses for the whole family to enjoy? A: I think Quail Lodge is one of the most underrated golf courses in this area. To me, it’s so much fun and it’s a charming, sporty layout. Carmel Valley Ranch is a wonderful family resource to learn and fall in love Continued on page 76

with the game. Poppy Hills is the heartbeat of the NCGA, and kids can go there for $5 through Youth on Course. It’s wonderful. The game needs more of that. For beginners, Monterey Pines is a really nice user-friendly course and the new Peter Hay Par-3 course, redesigned by Tiger Woods, is already coming to life and that’s going to be great fun. Q: What would you tell an infrequent or beginner golfer to look for in terms of enjoying the game? A: The biggest benefit is it’s the most social of all games. It starts with friendship. You can have grandkids playing with grandparents, husbands with wives, and with the handicap system, players of all different abilities can compete against each other and have fun. Everyone can be a part of it and feel included and just have fun. If you want to smoke a cigar and drink a beer, you can do that, too. You can play for a lot of money and get the adrenaline rush of that, or you don’t need to even keep score and just enjoy being in nature. There are so many ways to have fun with golf. It’s such an inclusive sport, despite what people think. There’s a course for everybody, from Peter Hay to Pebble Beach. There are a lot of portals into the game, too. You can take group lessons with friends, and if you have the means and motivation, you can take lessons at Pebble Beach Academy, which is one of the great teaching facilities in California.
76
1913 Luxury by the Sea
There are so many ways to come into the game. Q: What are the differences between the Pro-Am and a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach? A: The Crosby is kind of a fun local party in a lot of ways and the U.S. Open is a monumentally important event to the whole golf world. It’s always neat for Pebble Beach to be on such a grand stage. It’s great to see Pebble play with its most challenging and interesting setup. Tiger Woods said, ‘There’s nothing like Pebble when it’s set up for the U.S. Open,’ and I couldn’t agree more. The greens are brick hard and so you have to control your ball so precisely. There are more narrow fairways, longer rough, much more devilish pin positions. The USGA just turn up the volume on everything, making the course more of a challenge and a test. Q: How was it for you playing with your friends on the course right after the U.S. Open concluded? A: You can have an existential crisis because it’s so hard. You think you know how to play golf, but those conditions will quickly expose your weaknesses, both physical and emotional. Q: At press time, we are looking toward the 75th AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, played for the first time without spectators due to COVID-19. How is that going to affect the tournament? A: I covered the 2020 Masters and the PGA Championship without fans. You definitely miss the energy. For the Crosby Clambake, there’s always been such a close connection between the spectators and those inside the ropes. It’s a format that encourages interaction and fun and silliness. Certainly with the Bill Murrays of the world, but it also helps relax the professionals—they kind of get into it, too. The fans are going to be missed at this tournament more than most any other, but the show must go on. You’d much rather have the tournament without fans than have to cancel it. We take that tournament for granted, but I know when I lived in New York, I’d sometimes get emotional watching the opening montage on TV that would show dogs on the beach and whales frolicking with the sun shining. Pebble Beach in February is such a wonderful mental vacation for much of the country, just getting to enjoy all that beauty sitting in your living rooms. That will endure even without spectators. As a television product it will be perfectly enjoyable.

A: Golf is the perfect sport for the COVID era. It’s very easy to socially distance and there are lots of little changes that have taken place to make it safer, like leaving the flags in the holes so no one has to touch them. You can still get exercise and be with friends and enjoy competition and camaraderie. The benefits and the joys of the game have never been more important than during COVID. And without school sports, a lot of kids have gotten involved in the game. Nationally, participation rates are through the roof—it’s neat that during this time of need, golf has become a safe haven. Q: What are some of your most special memories from the golf course? A: I’ve been blessed to be the first person to tee off at Pebble Beach a handful of times. And at Cypress Point a few times. You are literally making footprints in the dew walking down the fairways. I always get goosebumps and I take a moment to reflect on how lucky I am. Most golfers play these courses once in a lifetime…if they’re lucky! To be able to play on a semi-regular basis, it is a thrill. You sort of float along in a state of euphoria, not just because it’s such a beautiful place and such a great golf course, but also, it’s like the energy of tens of millions of golfers are propelling you along because you know they would give anything to be making those footsteps. I still feel that way, even though I’ve been playing these courses for a long time now. They are simply the greatest golf courses in the country and maybe the world. That we have access to them is amazing. I will put Monterey Peninsula Country Club on that list as well and Spyglass Hill, these once-in-a-lifetime courses that we get to play at all the time. That is an incredible blessing. ■

Carmel Realty and their agents have supported Hospice Giving Foundation for many, many years. They have been volunteers, donors, event guests, and good friends. They share our vision with customers, team members, and neighbors. Their unwavering and kind generosity exemplifies understanding, even about a most difficult topic.
The generosity of Carmel Realty’s agents and Foundation is far-reaching. The financial support to “Adopt a Family” Christmas program as well as the gifts to the organization and children make such a difference in the lives of the families in our community. A far-reaching support to the organization and truly making a difference!
