EDITOR’S LETTER

ith Spring approaching, days grow longer, temperatures increase, and new growth begins. We are hopeful that with this natural rejuvenation cycle will also come a renewal of good health and the eventual passing of the pandemic that has impacted our lives for nearly two years now. On the Monterey Peninsula, many signs of a renewal are already evident. Our business environment is experiencing a resurgence, and the outdoor lifestyle afforded here is as incredible as ever. As people deeply recognize that life is precious, they are taking full advantage of all the Peninsula has to offer. Many locals are thriving today, thanks to the resilience and creativity of business owners and staff, with support from the community. In this edition of 1913, we share stories from a variety of successful businesses, and how they have adapted to the realities of the pandemic while providing great service and products in an accelerating marketplace. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is back and there is much pent-up desire for people to get out with friends, socialize and enjoy life again. We are all thrilled for this year’s players to compete in front of a live audience again and are hopeful for a safe and successful tournament. There is so much to be thankful for and people are finding it more important than ever to show their gratitude to partners, friends, and loved ones. We asked some of the company’s avid golfers to share their latest ideas for great thank-you gifts, many golf related. Treats can be enjoyed in big or small bites, and Carmelby-the-Sea has something for everyone. We highlight some of our favorite sweets shops to suggest where to find delicious indulgences during your next trip through town.

1913 Luxury by the Sea
Finally, we know much of the accelerated resurgence in our community is driven by the increased demand to live here. As the leading luxury real estate provider, we escorted hundreds of families into new homes last year. Many of them chose to move here from another area for the very lifestyle that we highlight in this magazine. We have also discovered many locals recently changed residences to find a more suitable set-up for spending more time at home. The real estate market in 2021 reached a new record high, with $3.2 billion in total sales volume across the Peninsula. This was a 25% increase over the already exceptional 2020 sales volume. With increased demand, our inventory of available homes decreased by over 50% in 2021, driving the average sales price up in every market we track across the Peninsula. Carmel-by-the-Sea saw an increase of 20% in average sales price between 2020 and 2021, while the Pebble Beach average home sales price increased by 32% in the same time period. We expect a bit of normalizing in our real estate market but remain optimistic for the 2022 market based on the extraordinary, continued demand we have from buyers. This issue highlights a sampling of exceptional sales we facilitated in 2021 and displays several of homes we are currently representing. Please reach out to us if there is anything we can do to assist you or your friends and family with any real estate activity. We hope you have a fantastic Spring! Dan Lynch Editor

hile strolling along Carmel’s Ocean Avenue, enjoying the many unique stores, the fresh sea breezes can leave one a bit peckish, especially after walking back up the hill from the sandy shores of Carmel Beach. When there isn’t the need for a full-stop meal at one of town’s topnotch restaurants, darting into a local pastry or candy store can provide much-needed sustenance to keep the power shopping going strong. Or you may find that the meal you just enjoyed can be topped off with a divine piece of chocolate, creamy ice cream cone, or even a handcrafted donut. Our staff selflessly sampled and disclosed some of their favorite places for indulgences, and we encourage you to try them too. Consider taking some additional treats to go and bring back a sweet piece of Carmel with you to share with loved ones or co-workers…or enjoy them solo. We won’t tell.

Cottage of Sweets This self-proclaimed “British-style sweets shop” has been charming locals and visitors since 1959, and their handmade fudge (with flavors like crème brulée, Heath English toffee, salted caramel crunch, dark chocolate sea salt caramel and Bordeaux) seems to have magical properties that induces bliss. Set in an impossibly quaint cottage, an unbelievable assortment of treats—from Turkish Delights to chocolate covered gummy bears to saltwater taffy—can be mixed and matched and chosen to suit everyone’s tastes. English candy bars and novelty candies make perfect gifts but be sure to get enough for yourself to make it through the afternoon. Those little paper bags of candies empty out surprisingly fast.
Carmel Bakery & Coffee House The distinctive salted pretzel sign hanging outside is a happy reminder that you’ve found the right place not only for fresh baked goods, ice cream, and coffee, but also for more substantial fare like breakfast burritos and handmade sandwiches, soups and salads. However, it’s nearly impossible to ignore the mouth-watering cannolis, Scottish shortbread, English scones, Italian biscotti and huge soft Bavarian pretzels beckoning from the window. And of course, there’s the call of a scoop or two of ice cream, from Marianne’s, a hand-crafted treat from nearby Santa Cruz. In business since 1899, Carmel Bakery is the village’s longest running retail establishment and the oldest building in town, with only four owners in its history. Continued on page 16

Lula’s Chocolates Receiving a box of Lula’s chocolates is inevitably greeted with sounds of joy from all ages. The enthusiasm is rooted in the love and ingenuity of Mrs. Lula Lund, who started making confections from her home in rural Wyoming in the early 1900s. Mrs. Lund passed on her traditions of creating chocolates in heavy copper kettles to her grandson, Scott Lund. Scott provided chocolates for the Winter Olympics ceremonies in Salt Lake City in 2002 and was encouraged to start selling the treats to the public. After moving to Carmel in 2004, Scott and his family brought sea salt caramels, California toffee, pecan turtles, truffles and more to our town, and our tastebuds have never been more delighted.
Café Carmel Established in 1952 as Wishart’s Bakery, this well-rounded café serves breakfast, coffee, lunch, and light dinners, but customers’ eyes go wide for the bakery items. (One of our staffers is particularly enthused by the fresh fruit tart.) Eclairs, pies (pumpkin, pecan, silk), tiramisu, cake pops, Napoleons, brownies, cookies and so much more make it a necessity to have repeat visits in order to fairly sample the wares. There are also entire decorated cakes made to order, along with strudel, pumpkin bread squares, zucchini bread bites (a great way to get your veggies in), cheesecake, and ice cream. Get the kids a double scoop cookie dough cone while you eat a slice of quiche or a kale and fennel salad, or mix it up and serve the little ones a beet salad while you dive into an almond macaroon or a peanut butter cookie. Isn’t it time to embody: life’s short, eat dessert first? Continued on page 20

Pâtisserie Boissiere This Carmel institution was established almost six decades ago and fashioned after a European chateau with French country food and fresh baked pastries. With daily lunch, weekend brunch, and dinner four nights a week, plus daily picnics to-go, delights like crab and avocado salad, brie and fresh fruit, roasted chicken sandwiches on baguettes and French Onion soup beg to be finished off with pastries, cakes and tarts. Happy customers rave about enjoying a coconut cream tart after a dinner of Beef Bourguignon and salmon, and a lemon tart after a glass of wine, soup and quiche. There’s plenty more to choose from, like croissants, pear tarts, eclairs, bread pudding, chocolate mousse cake, Josephines, pot au chocolat, crème brulée, raspberry bars, cappuccino cake, mocha custard and strawberry triangles…what are you waiting for?
Dutch Door Donuts Though the newest kid on the Carmel bakery block, this engaging donut shop has already gained a loyal following. With the simple but bold premise of being the best donut and coffee shop on the coast, the ingredients are nearly 100 percent organic, and the donuts are baked fresh to order. Unique flavors include ground chocolate, vanilla bean glaze, cinnamon sugar, raspberry pomegranate, quince with gouda truffle cheese and persimmon ginger snap. Clever merchandise like T-shirts proclaiming, “I Want Abs, I Need Donuts” and “The Center of a Donut is 100% Fat Free,” along with dog treat “donuts” and bandanas, just inside the bright orange Dutch door, makes this concept have legs. ■

Silver Linings Local Businesses Adapt and Thrive during the Pandemic
By Brett Wilbur
D
espite a harrowing economic time, starting in spring 2020, when many retailers and restaurants were forced to shut down during the pandemic’s shelter-in-place orders, local business owners discovered creative solutions to work with the frequently changing scenarios and guidelines. Concerned locals banded together, with people buying gift cards to support struggling restaurants, who quickly shifted to take-out and outdoor dining options, while clothing stores offered video shopping and outdoor pickup and art galleries and jewelry stores transitioned to online sales when needed. These past few years have revealed a community determined to make things work despite the many challenges, and that mindset was adopted by countless businesses and individuals. Following are examples of some of the many Carmel businesses that not only survived during the pandemic, but thrived, by focusing on customer service, utilizing different modes of delivering their food and products, and by prioritizing highquality goods and offerings. Through it all, these owners expressed their gratitude to their clients and for the pristine and welcoming environment of Carmel.

Westbrook Modern 3 NW of 7th on Dolores, Carmel
westbrookmodern.com
Brian Westbrook sold millions of dollars’ worth of art from his dining room table while his Carmel gallery, Westbrook Modern, was closed from the pandemic. “You just have to do your best to stay in touch with your clients, and that’s what we are about,” Westbrook says. “It’s about building trust with people, knowing that we want to sell them good value and things that we think will stand the test of time. That’s why the majority of the artists in the gallery are in anywhere from 10-300 museums.” Westbrook, who has a business background, says he makes his best effort to make sure people aren’t wasting their money. “Clients are buying things that are beautiful, but they are also valuable,” he says. “The pandemic really just verified that we are on the right track. People stayed in touch with us; they continued to buy. We shipped work to New York, Germany, Tokyo, Korea…because of the relationships we’ve built. The relationships we have with our clients is the most important aspect of our business.” People stuck at home had more time to shop for artwork online during the pandemic. Popular pieces purchased were by Andy Warhol, Picasso, and singer Frank Sinatra. “I think overall, the primary purpose that people buy is to elevate their mood,” Westbrook states. “People were really focused on color, and it really helped the modern market. Modern art is very colorful, exuberant, dynamic and engaging, so that was already in place for us.” Much of the art that Westbrook brokers, such as pieces by Monet and Renoir, is too valuable to be exhibited in the gallery, so interested collectors can contact Westbrook directly. And quite a few of those collectors have had a huge return on their investment, which brings Westbrook great joy. For example, glass sculptures by artist Christopher Ries are of limited availability and are skyrocketing in value. “I want to make something unique available to my clients that I know they won’t be able to get anywhere else,” Westbrook says. The Club Carmel & Luciano Barbera Club Ocean Avenue at Dolores
Club di Lusso in the La Rambla Building Lincoln 2 SW of Ocean Avenue
theclubcarmel.com
Popular Ocean Avenue clothier The Club features Robert Graham, Brax, Hagen, Magnanni and other brands. Success has come from offering comfortably sophisticated styles, like sport coats with a built-in vest, and giving customers a refined, yet casual look. “Our lines feature the softest wool, cashmere and cottons for comfort and personal style,” says “Keeper of the Keys,” owner Todd Tice.
“The pendulum seemed to swing back a bit toward more conventional ‘dress attire,’ as 2021 was our best year yet for neckwear,” he says. Due to staffing shortages from the pandemic, Tice had to close his store on Lincoln to walk-ins but it is still open by appointment. “We have moved a large portion of that merchandise up to The Club on Ocean Avenue,” he says. He’s also seen a huge resurgence in people wanting to get out and shop in person.
Just a few doors down, Tice also operates the only Luciano Barbera flagship store in the world, which features the family’s entire collection. Tice and the Barbera family are very pleased with the recent success of the new store.
“Everything changed in April and May of 2021,” he says. “People just wanted to get out and do something…anything…and many of them had really done very little actual shopping in well over a year. Once the mask mandates were lifted [at that time], it was so much fun just to see everyone’s smiles. It had just been way too long. They were happy to be out, and they came out to spend.”
“We also feature Geoff Nicholson neckwear and Santoni footwear, all made in Italy as well,” Tice says. “You can find beautiful, deconstructed blazers, unique outerwear, and incredible knitwear.”
The personalized customer service has kept clients returning, and Tice explains, since many of his regular clients were unable to travel to Europe as they normally do on a regular basis, they came to Carmel more than usual starting in 2021.
After the 2020 pandemic shelter-in-place order lifted, Tice says clients were leaning toward premium cashmere lines that they could wear out around town or just lounging around the house.
“In many cases, they came to Carmel for the first time,” he notes, “which all Carmel businesses should have benefitted from.”

Proprietor David Fink owns two of Carmel’s hottest restaurants, Cantinetta Luca, and Michelin star-awarded Aubergine Carmel, run by Executive Chef Justin Cogley. Luca is rooted in traditional Italian hand-crafted recipes, while Aubergine has an eight-course tasting menu which changes daily and focuses on what is in season and available locally. Fink noticed some major transformations in Carmel during the pandemic. “We all know that Carmel became this sanctuary, and therefore when all of our guests really wanted to get out of unfortunately San Francisco or Los Angeles, they chose to come to Carmel because it’s such a special place,” he shares. “It’s so clean, the beach is incredible, and the pine-scented air is so fresh. People wanted to be outside in this beautiful setting.” There were many cautious guests who appreciated the option of eating outside with space between them and other diners. “We just learned to adapt every day,” Fink says. “The whole thing about COVID is to just change and adapt. We had a very good to-go drink program, with special margaritas and a wonderful to-go dining program at Aubergine, that was the start of it…Once we kind of got over the shock of what we were going through, we saw customers really want to start enjoying life again. They were buying nice bottles, ordering supplemental things off the menu, really going for it.”
36
1913 Luxury by the Sea
Besides visitors to town, locals have also been flocking back for the last 6-9 months. “The locals are our bread and butter, and we love them and couldn’t survive without them,” Finks says. “Aubergine is possibly classified as a special-occasion restaurant, but we have locals who come there two times a month. We have locals who come to Luca a couple of times a week. It’s just fantastic.” Guests have been appreciative to have regained the ability to dine out again and have shown that gratitude to the staff. “When it was shelter in place, we had this guest who would order $1000 at Aubergine to go for Saturday pickup and they would leave a $1000 tip,” Fink shares. “We have these incredible people who wanted to make sure the staff was taken care of, and we did everything we could to make sure the team was taken care of as well.” People have been ordering more luxury items and ordering rarer and more expensive bottles of wine. “People wanted to live life, they wanted to experience it and they wanted to have a taste of luxury,” Fink says. “That was a really big shift that kicked in in a big way. On the menu, we saw people wanting to have things that were great comfort food. Delicious pasta, the Bistecca and Justin’s famous Shirodashi sauce on many of the shellfish that he serves.” Above all, Fink says it’s the location that has truly created a sanctuary for people during these challenging years. “COVID has shown, even more so now, what a magical place Carmel is,” Fink says. “It’s really proved it’s one of the most special places in the world.” Continued on page 42

Glacier Bar Currently at 26135 Carmel Rancho Blvd., Suite F 21, Carmel Coming to Carmel Plaza, Ocean Ave., Carmel in Summer 2022
After being forced to shut down multiple times during the pandemic, Braiker shifted the business to focus more on medical treatments performed by a nurse and a doctor.
Glacier Bar celebrated three years in business in 2021, and as they enter their fourth year, owner Jessica Braiker is excited to expand the business into a larger space, located in Carmel Plaza in the heart of downtown Carmel.
“We were able to reopen safely under strict protocols,” she says. “Being able to actually help clients boost their immune system was very rewarding.”
glacierbarcarmel.com
The current business model opened with an emphasis on bio-hacking treatments, such as cryotherapy in the Titan cryotherapy chamber, red light sessions in a Lightstim Bed, and treatments in an infrared sauna pod, along with facials and Yumi lash lifts. Under the supervision of a doctor, during the pandemic the business expanded into Botox and filler treatments, vitamin and IV therapy and more. Soon the business will offer even more creative health and beauty treatments. “The new space will be triple the size and include more treatment rooms, increased retail, bodywork, such as massage, and a stretch bar,” Braiker says. “We are also including body scrubs, wraps and heated treatments that tone cellulite on the extended menu. Also, the injectable list will include more brands and PDO threads.”
Braiker has noticed people have really started enjoying the relaxing heat-based therapies she offers and have been focusing on improving their overall health and appearance. “Most health-related concerns start with inflammation in the body and that’s what we specialize in,” she says. “There are also some clients who have come in to ask about their ‘turkey neck’ they’ve noticed on Zoom calls, and we can help with that too!” Braiker says there has been a lot of depression surrounding the pandemic and people have suffered in mind and body. She encourages them to put themselves first and find a healthy routine. Warm and friendly staff make any service feel nurturing and soothing, and Braiker can provide custom treatment plans for clients to look and feel their best. With the new expansion, she will be able to offer more appointments, validated parking in the Carmel Plaza garage, and even more beauty and wellness experiences. “We are excited for the future,” she says.

Fourtané Ocean Avenue at Lincoln Street in Carmel
fourtane.com
Fourtané jewelry store opened a Rolex Salon and a Patek Phillippe showroom in 2021, complete with Swiss-crafted, laser-cut cases and Venetian plaster-and-canvas art. Started as primarily jewelry store by Sandy and John Bonifas 36 years ago, sons Josh and Kris are an integral part of the business, with Josh specializing in rare and vintage watches. “Our ultimate goal is to create the most elevated luxury experience possible,” Josh Bonifas says. “Having the two separate showrooms allows us to tell each brand’s story independently and immerse the customer in each individual brand’s identity.” During the pandemic, with stores closed, Bonifas says that clients missed having the opportunity to purchase luxury goods in person. “Compared to some other luxury watch brands, Rolex and Patek remain ‘in-store experience’ brands and customers are longing for and embracing this,” he says. “We are currently experiencing unprecedented demand for luxury goods…With
all of the information available on the products, customers are more knowledgeable than ever before, which adds even more value to the brands and their timepieces. There was a time when certain models were in higher demand than others, but there is now strong demand for nearly every Rolex and Patek Philippe.” Having such high customer demand has caused many products to sell out; however, Bonifas says providing elevated hospitality has kept the store thriving. Customers are offered refreshments upon arrival and receive an extra investment of resources and time to help them feel valued. “Each client’s experience is enhanced by the new environments created with our recent remodel,” Bonifas shares. “We can now engage with our customers in ways that inspire, encourage and make each visit to Fourtané memorable.” He points out that customers’ discretionary income is not being spent as much on travel experiences, but instead on the experience of purchasing luxury goods. “We have never experienced such extreme demand for the products we sell,” Bonifas says. “It is a unique challenge we are working diligently to handle graciously. As ambassadors of Rolex and Patek Philippe, we are proud to share the immense efforts that are involved in producing these fine timepieces and celebrate the rich histories of these prestigious brands with enthusiasts and collectors.” Continued on page 46

Brochu Walker 1 NW Corner Dolores Street and Ocean Avenue, Carmel
brochuwalker.com
Karine Dubner, the co-founder and CEO of women’s clothing label Brochu Walker, opened a Carmel store, the brand’s very first stand-alone boutique, in July 2021. “We had a very busy summer with both locals and tourists, many of whom were already familiar with the brand and excited to see us here in Carmel,” says Retail Manager and Carmel Store Manager Marina Storonkin. The timeless and elegant clothes go perfectly with the California lifestyle and weather and feature a European influence. “Brochu Walker collections are foremost driven by a vision inspired by the beauty found in nature—creating a deep narrative that’s earthy and endless,” Storonkin says. “While we are known for our knitwear, our collections include pieces designed for all seasons and temperatures, from thick-knit cashmere to linen blends, to vegan leather and suede and beyond.” Some popular items include “lookers,” a pre-layered silhouette, designed to emulate the effortlessness of a one-piece outfit, but with the look of two. Jennifer Lopez and Oprah Winfrey are customers who have worn the designs. “We make luxury accessible with our timeless, ‘trend-rebuking’ styles,” Storonkin says. “The collection is knitwear driven and cashmere focused. Each style embraces femininity with a detail-oriented focus on fit and construction. Additionally, everything is designed with a sustainable mindset, which we know is becoming ever-important to consumers.”
46
1913 Luxury by the Sea
Since the pandemic, Storonkin has noticed that clients are looking for more comfort and versatility in their clothing, items that are suitable for working from home or to quickly throw on before leaving the house. “People don’t necessarily want to spend an entire day shopping anymore,” she adds. “Consumer behavior is much more straight-to-the-point. Usually, when people visit us, we ask them if they’re looking for something specific in terms of a purpose, a need in their closet, or an upcoming event. If they are simply browsing, we walk them through the store and show them top sellers, outfit pairings, and then unique opportunity items such as our hand-knit cardigans or our tissue cashmere.” Stylists in the store get to know customers either in person, by phone, or video call, and can set aside clothing suggestions for clients in a dressing room to try on as soon as they enter the store. “We’ve seen some clients who were very excited to shop in person after spending so much time shopping via a computer or a phone screen,” Storonkin says. “It was a chance for them to shop with friends, try on clothes and feel beautiful again. While our online market is enormous, we always tell people that seeing our collections in person truly does it justice. There’s nothing like being able to touch and feel our sweaters and enjoy how they look when you try them on for the first time. Plus, our stylists are experts on our sizing and can help each customer find the perfect fit for each item.” ■

Golf is Back in Full Swing Gift Ideas for the Golfer in Your Life By Brett Wilbur
A
fter last year’s no-spectators-allowed pandemic rules for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament, golfers and fans are more than excited for the 2022 in-person event, scheduled for January 31-February 6. During the pandemic, there has been an explosion in golf participation and interest, with people eager to try this outdoor sport that allows us to safely connect with others, challenge ourselves, and to enjoy life again. The Monterey Peninsula is home to some of the greatest and most varied golf courses in the world, with spectacular scenery, and has also seen a huge increase in golf activity. Many Carmel Realty Company and Monterey Coast Realty agents are longtime avid golfers and find themselves sometimes musing over what to give as gifts to their clients who love golf or to friends who may have hosted them at their home courses. We rounded up some of their ideas for great gifts—some clearly golf-related and some locally oriented—that will please even the most seemingly impossible to shop for client or friend. It turns out there are plenty of unique, personal and rare items out there to make someone feel appreciated.

Great Golf Gifts
Ben Zoller Monterey Coast Realty Realtor® Ben Zoller grew up in Pebble Beach, with a family immersed in golf. His mother worked for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament for decades, and his father worked for Monterey Peninsula Country Club for 45 years. Zoller’s grandfather was cofounder of First Tee—Monterey County, while his uncle is the general manager at Tehama Golf Club. Zoller has been part of the game since childhood, and his home club is Tehama, founded by actor, director and producer Clint Eastwood. Zoller’s perfect gift idea for the golfers in his life can be found at the Tehama Pro Shop and includes gear like hats and shirts with the logo from the very exclusive “Clint” Tournament, about to celebrate its 18th year.
Chris Pryor Carmel Realty Company Realtor® Chris Pryor has a long history with the game, serving as the Head Golf Professional at Pebble Beach Golf Links and The Preserve Golf Club, where he also served as general manager. Pryor’s home club is The Preserve, and his most unique idea for the golfer who has everything is a very special trip to the Scotty Cameron Golf Gallery, located in Encinitas, Calif. Pryor offers up this very rare gift to those who are particularly in love with golf: a custom-fitted putter that is a one-of-a-kind collectible, tailored to each golfer’s preferences and abilities.
Lynn Knoop Realtor® Lynn Knoop, of Carmel Realty Company, experiences golf as the ultimate way to connect with others while having a wonderful time. She finds that the game crosses generations, allowing her to develop closer relationships with clients, friends, her late father and stepfather, and now, her son-in-law and teenage grandson. She plays at various clubs on the Monterey Peninsula and loves to share gift cards to Pebble Beach with family, friends, and clients. Whether the card is to be used to dine at one of the many top restaurants surrounding the golf courses, or to relax at the legendary Spa at Pebble Beach, Knoop wants others to enjoy the Pebble Beach experience as much as she does. Peter Butler Broker Associate Peter Butler of Carmel Realty Company has co-chaired multiple charity golf tournaments, including for the local Hospice Foundation and First Tee—Monterey County, and has played golf since he was a child. He has played in many local tournaments, including the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and his home club is Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Butler loves that golf can take you to so many spectacular places around the world and spends time golfing with friends in locales from Ireland to Mexico. When searching for a special gift, Butler visits local fabric maker Jan de Luz Linens to select the perfect monogrammed item, personalized handkerchief, cocktail napkins, or other functional gifts.
Geoff Arnold and Rebecca Wolf Arnold After a long week of working hard at real estate, the husband-and-wife duo of the Arnold Team at Carmel Realty Company enjoy spending time together outdoors in the fresh air walking and playing golf at The Club at Pasadera. Their go-to thank you gift for lucky recipients is a personalized gift bag featuring favorite items created in the local community. Lula’s Chocolates Sea Salt Caramels, Jake’s honey from The Carmel Honey Company and Jeffrey’s Spiced Pecans are always top choices. A new sure-to-be favorite is a specialty nut and gift basket from The Nut Hut, a shop at the Court of the Fountains in Carmel whose products are organic and ethically sourced. The Arnolds love supporting these and other niche companies from the Carmel and Monterey Peninsula area.
Dan Lynch Dan Lynch, CEO of Carmel Realty Company, loves the competitive nature of golf. One of the greatest benefits of the game is it allows him a healthy way to compete with himself and his friends. His home course is Monterey Peninsula Country Club, and Lynch says playing golf forces him to clear his mind on daily issues, allowing him to return to supporting others with a fresh perspective. His first choice of a special gift is to personalize the item to the recipient’s tastes: whether it’s a fine cigar, a rare whiskey, or a great wine. Lynch is also a connoisseur of the latest technology and has discovered a great gift for golfers: the Bushnell Golf Wingman, which acts as a Bluetooth music speaker and also provides voiceover distance to the pin through a built-in GPS range finder. ■
