Editor’s Letter There are too many compelling reasons to live on the Monterey Peninsula…the breathtaking natural beauty and infinite opportunities to commune with nature, a sophisticated food and wine scene, shopping and art galleries that endlessly delight, a civilized sense of community, top-ranked schools, a pace that reminds one to slow down and savor life…and yet in this issue, in honor of the 2019 US Open being hosted in Pebble Beach, we will keep the focus on two things: golf and “après golf ” here on the Monterey Peninsula. A playground for some of the best golfers in the world, over the years, golf fans have visited Pebble Beach from far and wide and some have never left. They love it so much, they put down roots here to enjoy world class golf year-round, right in their own backyard. We count many of our agents at Carmel Realty Company and our sister company, Monterey Coast Realty, among those passionate golfers. We asked one of our own passionate, lifelong golfers, Ben Zoller, for some inside scoop on the local golf scene in “Tales from the Turf ” on pg 12. In a previous issue we boasted Monterey County being named one of the top 10 wine destinations in the world by Wine Enthusiast magazine. While we still love to brag about our wine country and
the countless award-winning local wines we enjoy here, the list of possibilities for après golf cocktails on the Monterey Peninsula is far more expansive. In this issue, we polled locals to find the best places around town to enjoy an après golf drink. See our insiders’ guide to a variety of local libations on pg 102. ebble Beach is known for its world class golf courses and as a mecca for golfers both nationally and internationally. As this issue hits the stands, Pebble Beach plays host to the 2019 US Open and is the focus of the entire golf world once again. A playground for some of the best golfers in the world, over the years, golf fans have visited Pebble Beach from far and wide and some have never left. They love it so much, they put down roots here to enjoy world class golf year-round, right in their own backyard. We count many of our agents at Carmel Realty Company and our sister company, Monterey Coast Realty, among those passionate golfers.
While the sport of golf may not lend itself to the same tall tales or “fish stories” that fishing or other sports do, we decided to investigate a few untold “Tales from the Turf,” starting with our own agents for whom golf is a way of life. Early in our Q&A, we came to realize how much life on the course teaches us about life off the course and how lessons in golf carry over into both business and personal life. Each issue will feature a fun Q&A with a different agent/golfer. This month we start our Q&A with Ben Zoller from our sister company, Monterey Coast Realty.

Ben grew up in Pebble Beach, went to Robert Louis Stevenson High School, and attended University of Denver before returning home to the Monterey Peninsula. His mother was the executive director of the AT&T golf tournament for 38 years and his father is the golf superintendent of Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Over the generations the Zoller family has had an impact on every golf course on the peninsula. Knowing both the Monterey Peninsula, and all of its many golf courses like the back of his hand, Ben was a natural for a career in real estate and we are happy to have him… and happy that he indulged us with this Q&A.
Q: Best hole-in-one story? A: Both my grandparents are buried on a par 3 at Tehama Golf Club. The day after my 30th birthday I took three guys from Dallas to go play. I didn’t want to be there or play there with all of those memories, but when we got to the par 3 where they are buried, I got to the tee, swung, and my ball took one hop and went into the hole for a hole-in-one. There was no more fitting place or time to make a hole-in-one, and it was a reminder that even though my grandparents are not on this earth, they are still looking after me.
Q: Best (local) place to golf at sunset/sunrise? A: Tehama Golf Club for sunrise and Pebble Beach Golf Links for sunset.

Q: Who or what got you started golfing – at what age? A: Mom at age 8.
Q: Best/worst topics of conversation on the golf course (and why)? A: Best: Too many to count. Golf has allowed me the chance to play with some pretty influential people. Talking to Leon Panetta about getting Bin Laden was up there with the best.
Q: If you had to choose the top 3 holes are on the Monterey Peninsula, what would they be? 1. #16 at Cypress Point Club – world famous 240-yard Par 3 over the ocean 2. #8 at Pebble Beach Golf Links – Par four over the Ocean. Jack Nicolas says it’s the best second shot in golf – and I agree 3. #14 on the MPCC Dunes Course – From the hidden back tee box this is one of the scariest and most beautiful holes in golf. A tee box you won’t want to leave, even after you’ve hit your shot.

Q: Most outrageous golf experiences (involving animals, golf carts, sand traps, water, etc. – anything goes here)? A: I played in the AT&T on a Saturday when Mark Wahlberg had to leave and I subbed in for him. All the crowds were expecting him and they got me. I had two goals: don’t kill anyone and don’t embarrass myself too much.
Q: Most money you’ve ever won/lost golfing (though most of you will probably not want to admit this) or any stories involving money riding on a game/hole? A: Would rather not admit to this one.
Q: What do you love/hate most about golf? A: Golf is the most similar game to life. There is no one to count on but yourself. You sometimes get bad breaks after good shots and good breaks from bad shots. It’s the only sport where you can call a penalty on yourself. You can learn more about a person over 18 holes of golf than you can in a lifetime of friendship.
