Editor’s Letter Happily, summer is upon us again. Here on the Monterey Peninsula, known for its mild climate, we are rarely too hot or too cold and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Like Goldilocks, we have chosen to live in a climate that is always “just right.” The luxury of our year-round, mild climate attracts many vacationers and second home buyers looking to escape the heat of Texas, Arizona, and inland California, or the humidity and summer storms of the East Coast. Here everyone enjoys warm days followed by cool sunset evenings gathered around outdoor fires. Summer is also a time to unplug and take precious time to restore the soul, whether through relaxation or exploration. In this issue of 1913 we suggest an opportunity to do both as you discover “California’s Newest Wine Hot Spot” on page 8. (Spoiler Alert: Monterey County was named one of the top 10 wine destinations in the world by Wine Enthusiast magazine.) As always, this issue is filled with homes that meet everyone’s idea of luxury. Is Monterey the “newest” wine hot spot in California, or the world for that matter? Not really. Wine-making in Monterey actually dates back to the 18th century when Franciscan friars settled here, establishing missions and bringing with them their own heritage of grape growing and wine making. And they couldn’t have picked a better place to create a world-class wine region. With its favorable grape-growing climate, Monterey wine country is currently home to around 40,000 acres of vineyards. Once thought too cool for vineyards, Monterey is now considered one of the premiere growing regions, not just in California, but in the world. The combination of cool, foggy nights and warm, sunny days ripen fruit to perfection. It is this distinctive - Sir Robert Scott Caywood combination climate in Monterey that delays the ripening and allows the grapes to stay on the vine longer, absorbing extra nutrients and flavor from the soil. The unique geography of this area, with its differences in soil, wind, and moisture creates an ideal climate for a number of varietals.

Directly off the coast of Monterey is a deep, undersea valley, often called the “Blue Grand Canyon,” which provides the icy waters that generate much of the region’s microclimate. The warmth of our inland valley coupled with the cooling marine layer has established itself as the ideal microclimate for the production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though Monterey winemakers are having success with a wide range of varietals. Burgundy clones have thrived here from the perfect blend of ideal climate, southern exposure, and thin rocky soils, and Cabernets have met with great success as well, but Pinots and Chardonnays remain at the heart of Monterey wine making. 2018 AT&T�Pebble Beach Pro-Am

T

he Monterey Peninsula Foundation hosted another spectacular AT&T Pro-Am this February. The weather was beautiful and the three world-class courses proved to be a fantastic setting for the pros, celebrities, amateurs and fans. The event is held at three breathtaking courses on the Pebble Beach coast: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. The field draws 156 of the worlds best pro golfers and 156 amateurs made up of captains of industry, Hollywood stars, famous athletes, and other gracious players who all come together to raise money for charity. In 2016/2017 alone the Monterey Foundation donated $12.7M to Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. It’s a fun time to be on the Peninsula with over 190,000 fans going to watch the event in person. All this action allows for Carmel Realty Company to bring together a group of clients, agents, partners and friends for an amazing day at the Carmel Realty Company annual AT&T Pro-Am party. This year the event was held at a private home on Friday, February 9th during the celebrity round on the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club and it was our biggest party yet! Situated on the private side of the 6th tee box and just adjacent the 5th green, the location provided for excellent viewing and fun celebrity encounters. Guests enjoyed craft beer by Leopold 7, wines from local winery, Bernardus, great food and socializing with new and old friends.
