A

s December’s free-flowing festivities give way to New Year’s holiday hangovers, perhaps followed by January’s renewal and resolutions, most of the country prepares for a long winter hibernation, but as this issue hits the stands we here on the Monterey Peninsula will be busy gearing up for one of the most exciting events of the season: the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Every February we welcome close to 200,000 spectators to enjoy what has become one of the most internationally recognized stops on the PGA Tour, showcasing the best golfers in the world teaming up with A-list celebrities, comedians, professional athletes, rock stars, even celebrity chefs, here in our own backyard (literally for many of us) – against a backdrop of some of the most impressive real estate on the Monterey Peninsula. In Februaries past, the weather for this event has ranged from rain showers to gorgeous 80-degree sunshine, but whether it rains or shines, the AT&T never fails to be one of the most popular events of the year here on the Monterey Peninsula. As much as we love golf, for those of you who can tear yourselves away from the AT&T excitement this year, the Monterey Peninsula lifestyle offers even more in the way of both indoor and outdoor

activities year round. When the sun is shining: tennis, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and beach walks will beckon to you. If the rain arrives: grab your umbrellas and hit the quaint cobblestone streets of Carmel and make it an art day. trolling past the pastiche of charming cottages and modern beach houses of Carmel-by-the-Sea today, it’s hard to imagine these same tree-lined streets were once lined with rows of tents and rough-hewn cabins, forming a bohemian enclave that housed some of the most famous painters, writers, and actors of their day. Though the tents have been replaced with multimillion-dollar beachfront bungalows and ocean view residences, there is still a feeling of art in the air here. Carmel-by-the-Sea today remains, true to its roots, a vibrant artistic community. Whether its residents and visitors are creating art or simply inspired at every turn by the wealth of art and artists in every one of the 42 hidden courtyards and alleyways in the village, the arts are alive and well in Carmel.

As the art scene in Carmel has changed over the years, one thing is certain, the creative muse has never left this tiny hamlet where the land meets the sea. establishing artist colony after their city was destroyed. In an attempt to lure artists to stay and create a utopian artist colony, two idealistic developers, Frank Devendorf and Frank Powers, formed the Carmel Development Company and strategized ways to make Carmel enticing to displaced artists in San Francisco. The new residents were offered home lots for ten dollars down, little or no interest, and whatever they could pay on a monthly basis. Artists from San Francisco began to flock to Carmel, and soon their friends joined them. The colony, with its unpaved roads, rough cabins and temporary tents, quickly attracted many influential artists of the day such as Jack London, George Sterling, Robinson Jeffers, Mary Austin and Robert Louis Stevenson. The pristine beauty, the free-thinking community and the solitude of Carmel made it an exciting place to develop an artistic voice. Thus was born Carmel’s Bohemian art colony. Mary Austin, who had recently joined the colony wrote, “In the afternoon we have mussel bakes, cut down boe trees, and sit on the front of the hills and look out over the sea – and we talk, always we talk.”

Art enthusiasts will find a vibrant art scene in Carmel-by-the-Sea where galleries are abuzz with energy.

Soon Carmel’s tiny population was dominated by artists. In fact, a 1910 report stated that over 60% of the homes in Carmel were owned by individuals pursuing a life in the arts. These early artists regularly opened their doors, welcoming the public into their studios for an opportunity to socialize and to see the artist at work. Over a century later in Carmel, the tradition continues with Carmel’s Art Walk, held from 5-8pm on the second Saturday of each month to visit working studios and meet the artists who today carry on the art colony legacy. continued on page 24

Responding to the needs of artists displaced by the earthquake, in 1907, the Del Monte Hotel opened a large gallery catering to a wealthy, worldwide clientele, which helped introduce the best of California art to an international audience. Carmel thus gained national prestige as an important center for art. The natural beauty of the place and the creative energy of the artists’ colony created an atmosphere of enchantment and word began to spread. By 1910 the California press began to report on this new, hard-to-reach hot bed of progressive ideas and artistic souls. A visitor from the Los Angeles Times was amused by this village where “the butcher reads Browning and the liveryman wears long hair.” Founded in 1927 and still thriving today, the Carmel Art Association features (and sells) only local artists and offers a wealth of information about the local art scene, past and present.

When the Arts and Crafts Club began organizing lessons for aspiring painters, actors and craftsmen in 1914, some of the most prominent painters in the U.S. offered instruction for beginners and advanced students and soon achieved national recognition, with an article in The Mercury Herald commenting that “a fever of activity seems to have seized the community and each newcomer is immediately inoculated and begins with great enthusiasm to do something…with plays, studios and studies.” Carmel continued to be at the forefront of creativity during the 1960’s. For those interested in photography, Edward Weston displayed his prints at the New Group Gallery’s first photographic exhibition. The Friends of Photography, which later became Carmel’s Center for Photographic Arts (CPfA) blossomed in the 60’s and is still thriving in Carmel today, focusing not only on the Central Coast’s distinctive photographic art forms, but it has also become a vanguard of the future of photographic imagery. continued on page 30

Today this coastal village has close to 100 art galleries that celebrate both the heritage and the future of art, both locally and internationally. If that number feels overwhelming and you don’t know where to start, one way to explore a wide range of local galleries is the Carmel Art Tour, a fun and informal 90-minute guided walking tour that highlights the best of Carmel art galleries and explores painting, sculpture, art glass and photography – from historic to contemporary – around downtown Carmel. With so many local art galleries featuring prestigious national and international artists, the Carmel Art Association was founded in 1927 to showcase the wealth of local talent. It has been, and still is, a gathering place for local artists to display and sell their work and it offers the public a place to gather to engage with the arts as well, whether for poetry readings, lectures, exhibitions, or art instruction. Today the CAA features the work of more that 100 professional artists living on the Monterey Peninsula with a wonderful variety of styles and media – and exhibitions changing every month.

For craft-lovers and seekers of unique shopping experiences, popping up in alleyways like San Carlos square, in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Carmel, there is a bourgeoning “Artisan Alley” where, as older shops turn over, the alley is slowly reinventing itself, replacing the old businesses with studios of artisans or “makers,” who work on the premises crafting everything from art glass and customdesigned stained glass windows, to totes, purses and scarves, to soft furniture and light fixtures – all made by hand here in Carmel.
