elcome back! It is so satisfying to see the Monterey Peninsula once again operating in full swing as a vibrant, healthy, community. Locals are thrilled to be out socializing and enjoying all of the amazing activities available to us. Visitors are flocking to the area for the return of Car Week and celebrating after being confined to their homes for much of the last year. Take a walk through any of our downtown streets and you will see the energy level is extremely high. Our restaurants and tasting rooms are buzzing with guests enjoying so many farm-to-table meals and creative cuisines with wonderful local wines. Our boutiques and galleries are full of shoppers exploring unique offerings from talented designers and artists. Our stunning golf courses, beaches and hiking trails are all providing much-needed joy, exercise and fresh air. From a real estate standpoint, things are thriving as well. The first half of the year closed with outstanding sales volumes in almost every market across the Peninsula. The quarter proved that demand for this area is persistent and that our spike in sales and values was not just a short-term reaction to COVID-19. With high demand and a much lower than usual inventory of homes for sale, we are experiencing healthy increases in value. We do not take for granted how lucky we are to live in this incredible community. There are so many wonderful things to enjoy here, and in each edition of 1913, we like to feature a few of our favorite lifestyle activities. In this issue, we are honoring the importance of taking care of oneself. We are fortunate to have an outstanding community of spas across the Peninsula to help activate mental and physical wellness. We are happy to introduce a few of our favorites that emphasize not only relaxation but long-term health benefits.

As we mentioned, residents and guests are thrilled for the return of Car Week, which starts the second week of August. One of our favorite events is the Carmelby-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue, held Tuesday, August 10th. Through an interview with the event founder, we reveal how the community comes together to stroll through downtown in a casual, relaxed way to view these rare vehicles (no tickets required) and enjoy meeting new friends and fellow auto lovers. We invite you to stop by our Carmel Realty Ocean Avenue Gallery on Tuesday, August 10th, starting at 10am for coffee and pastries, followed by wine and cheese from 1-4pm. The gallery is located between Lincoln and Dolores, on the south side of Ocean Avenue, and we hope you stop by to say hello and enjoy some refreshments in between viewing the rare cars on display in town. In past editions of this magazine, we have featured our agents who enjoy golf, tennis, surfing, and other sports. This issue, we feature stories from some of our team members who have a passion for horseback riding. Whether riding on trails or competing in events, their description of peace, joy and connection to the horses and land are captivating. Together we have a great set of recommendations for active, healthy fun activities across the Peninsula this summer. We invite you to discover your favorites. As always, throughout this magazine we hope you’ll enjoy looking at some of the most striking local real estate available in the market. Please reach out to us if there is ever anything we can do to assist you or your friends and family with any real estate activity. We hope you have a fantastic summer! Dan Lynch Editor

Unwind Time to
Local Spas Provide Much-Needed Pampering By Brett Wilbur
A
fter over a year of lockdowns, restrictions, and closures from the pandemic, many of us are eager to experience a restart for our mental and physical well-being. Luckily, we have a variety of unique spas across the Monterey Peninsula that provide specialized wellness and relaxation treatments that aim to restore and replenish us both externally and internally. Book a treatment before or after a round of golf, tennis match, or a walk on the beach, and allow yourself to take a deep breath and feel refreshed and ready for some fun activities. Gina Bolton, director of spa and retail operations at the Bernardus Lodge & Spa in Carmel Valley, explains how making “spa time” is important right now in terms of taking care of one’s physical, mental, and emotional health. “I think many of us are trying to reconnect with the activities that brought us joy in the past,” she says. “Many routines and traditions were greatly disrupted for a long period of time, and there is a bit of nostalgia when returning to them now. This nostalgia can create a powerful, mood boosting spa day. By reflecting on the best of your past and times where you carved out space for self-care—one can gather inspiration and energy to help move forward. Nostalgia can bring powerful health benefits to your life—so let’s harness that in 2021.”
Glacier Bar M.D.
Glacier Bar M.D. aims to become Carmel’s top wellness facility, where people can target inflammation, relax in an infrared sauna, get injectables, and pamper with cryo-facials. Owner Jessica Braiker, who has been in the biohacking and aesthetics industry for years, is constantly updating the services she provides to keep up with the latest health and beauty technology. “I am a huge fan of cryotherapy,” Braiker says. “Your mobility is greatly increased afterwards. Our LightStim Bed is FDA cleared for joint and arthritic pain. We offer vitamin IVs, metabolism and immune boosting shots, Botox and fillers, microneedling, hydrating microdermabrasion, chemical peels, HCG programs, hormone therapy, nutritional guidance, cupping, and Bowen Therapy. Our nurse is working wonders for people suffering with TMJ.”

While most of Glacier Bar’s clientele are women ages 30 to 50, Braiker recommends her services to teenage athletes and dancers who are hard on their joints and constantly in motion, along with anyone who has arthritic pain. “We offer cryotherapy for instant relief along with a performance and recovery IV that delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream for increased absorption,” she says. “Everyone is different as far as how often they come in. We have our cryo members that I see almost every day and they’re like family.” The staff, which includes a medical doctor, takes educational training to stay current with the newest products and devices. “I am pleased to announce that we are the only clinic on the Peninsula to offer RHA (Resilient Hyaluronic Acid), a filler that lasts up to 15 months,” Braiker says. She suggests booking regular treatments to experience the best results. “I highly recommend that everyone have at least an express facial every other month to clean out pores and keep the fine lines at bay,” she says. “Our doctor is very hands-on with patients regarding their weight loss journey and typically sees them on a weekly basis.”
Glacier Bar is conveniently located, with ample parking, and often accommodates walk-ins. “We are tucked away in a corner, but it is great if you’ve just been injected or had micro-needling and need to run to your car without being seen,” Braiker says. With a laid back, friendly atmosphere, Braiker says that Glacier Bar offers skincare advice, clothing and gifts, and treatments to feel your best.
The Spa at Bernardus
Gina Bolton, director of spa and retail operations at Bernardus Lodge & Spa in Carmel Valley, summarizes the atmosphere of the spa in one word: peaceful. “The entire experience should be effortless for our guests,” she says. The spa, which is set in the sunshine and nestled between two swimming pools, is based on a “garden-to-soul philosophy” with offerings that include moonlit yoga, hypnotherapy, guided meditation, and honeybee nectar facial treatments. “Our seasonal specials allow guests to be a little bit adventurous and playful,” Bolton says. “We launched the 2020 Recovery Massage in the beginning of the year, and it has quickly become one our most popular services. Post Ranch Spa
The world-famous Post Ranch Inn, with breathtaking architecture set 1,200 feet above the crashing waters of the Pacific in the ruggedly beautiful cliffs of Big Sur, prides itself on being “the ultimate destination for romance, relaxation and rejuvenation.” The adults-only property boasts one of the most extraordinary settings in Monterey County, with basking pools high over the ocean and a swimming pool set in a sunny meadow. Activities include enjoying fine dining at award-winning Sierra Mar Restaurant overlooking the ocean and participating in nature hikes, yoga classes, astrology sessions, garden tours and star gazing. Spa treatments, located on a ridge top with views of the mountains, are only available to hotel guests, and are based on the “healing properties of nature.” Offerings include a Shamanic Journey Session with a medicine wheel, where “a shaman engages the forces of nature and the ancient wisdom of the ancestors to help create lasting changes for physical, mental and emotional well-being.” Post Ranch Spa Director Monika Jalovec explains the use of local elements in signature treatments.

“Jade is revered by many ancient cultures as a healing gemstone,” she says. “Collected from nearby coves and beaches, Big Sur jade is the only found vein of jade that is in the rock cliffs polished by the Pacific Ocean. One of our employees dives along the Big Sur coastline to collect this unique jade once treasured by indigenous people, who warmed it in fires for heating water. The Post Ranch Spa's signature Big Sur Jade Therapy utilizes warmed jade, collected from nearby beaches, combined with massage to melt taut muscles and relieve sore joints, while cooled marble releases inflammation. Inspired by indigenous culture, this thermotherapy stimulates circulation and balances energy centers.” All types of therapeutic massages are offered, including couple’s treatments, along with sound journey experiences, Reiki energy balancing sessions and a forest mediation set in redwood and oak groves on the 100-acre property. Jalovec says a growing number of guests are looking for services that boost the immune system and enhance longterm health. “While this holistic approach to healing has been an increasing trend for years, this trend is now rapidly accelerated by the global health crisis,” she says. “The benefits of coming to the spa are not only to be in the moment for relaxation, but also to reconnect with oneself and remember self-care is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.” ■

An Automotive Dream Event with Traction Carmel’s Concours on the Avenue Kicks off Car Week By Brett Wilbur
34
1913 Luxury by the Sea
O
n the Tuesday of Car Week each year since 2007 (with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic), Ocean Avenue in downtown Carmel closes and rolls out the red carpet for the Carmel-bythe-Sea Concours on the Avenue. Gorgeous multi-marques of European, American, and other heritage from 1940-1973, along with phenomenal Ferraris and Porsches up through 1989 and specialty autos, compete for awards like the Dennis A. LeVett Best of Show Award, The Tom and Virginia Jennaro Ferrari Cup, the Bruce Anderson Porsche Cup, and more. This year’s event takes place on August 10th, from 10am-5pm, and serves as the kick-off to Car Week. However, the free-to-the-public automotive extravaganza, which benefits the Carmel Foundation, would likely never have happened but for the determination of visionary Atlanta resident and massive car enthusiast Doug Freedman. “The first time I came to Carmel in 1987, my wife Genie and I were staying at Cypress Inn, and we walked out to Ocean Avenue,” Freedman recalls. “I remember saying to Genie, ‘Look at this place, it’s really charming with neat little buildings. It’s a chocolate box town. What if we could bring cars in and use this as a backdrop and eliminate all the traffic?” Freedman was deeply involved with volunteering for the Ferrari Club of America at the time, ultimately the president of the club, so he had years of experience in organizing large-scale car events and community activities. When he eventually moved out of the club, he decided to try to bring his Carmel car dream to life. In 2001, he reached out to the City of Carmel about putting phenomenal cars on Ocean Avenue in August and was politely turned down. “They said, ‘No, it’s never going to happen,’” he recalls. “They were really nice about it…but I was completely relentless…and dogged them.”
Photo: Ned and Kate Lawler of Shamrock Motoring Images
Freedman had met now-Carmel Mayor Pro Tem Bobby Richards at the Cypress Inn, where Freedman and wife Genie shared their dreams for bringing a car show to Ocean Avenue. Richards called Freedman in 2005 and told him that he had shared the Freedmans’ ideas with local businessman Denny LeVett, who wanted them to come meet with the economic development committee in Carmel. The Freedmans got on a plane that weekend, and by the next year, their proposed car event made it onto the agenda of the Carmel City Council.
“Carmel was not doing well during the initial part of Car Week, and I told them this is how you connect the dots,” he says. “The first year, in 2007, we rented a courtyard in Carmel Plaza and the event space on Dolores and 7th and provided free gourmet food for about 700 people and they realized we really wanted to do this.”
“Immediately, before day one, Denny LeVett and his family gave us his friendship and it helped in so many ways,” Freedman says. “We use the Cypress Inn as our headquarters (LeVett is the owner). He gave us so much support around town, both personally and professionally, in every way shape and form. Without his friendship and support, Concours on the Avenue would likely not exist.”
Freedman and Genie made countless friendships while looking for local vendors to help produce the event.
Freedman explained to the Carmel City Council that there was a gap between the events during Car Week, with Tuesday sitting vacant at the time and leaving people without things to do.
“I love making teammates,” he says. “That’s what Concours on the Avenue is about: providing a welcoming warmth and not forgetting those we met along the way. The goal has always been for the dollars to stay homegrown.” Continued on page 42

A magnificent oceanfront property which fronts a protected cove. This exquisite and environmentally conscious architecture showcases a four-level family-friendly residence. Clad in cedarwood and limestone - the materials are synonymous with the surroundings, and as much a signature of the Monterey Peninsula as the area’s Cypress trees. The living roof creates a striking aesthetic from every angle. The third level, open plan living space is cantilevered to frame a sea view facing north overlooking the bay and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. The spectacular vista engulfs the master level, where 9-foot-tall glass doors slide open onto a deck-wrapped swimming pool and entertainment lanai perched on the cove’s edge.

To that end, the event generates a significant amount of support for The Carmel Foundation. “Concours on the Avenue, right from the start, has had a single charitable organization partner, The Carmel Foundation, which supports seniors in Carmel and all over the Monterey Peninsula,” Freedman says. “Without ever having sold a single spectator ticket in our aggregate years, the event has raised at this point $450,000. This will likely be the year that the $500,000 level is approached, all the while continuing to build awareness of the Carmel Foundation.” Besides the over 175 rare luxury, muscle, hot rod and sporting cars dating from 1940-1973, and the Porsche and Ferrari autos through 1989, the event showcases a class heritage exhibit for anything that doesn’t fit the normal profile, such as micro cars. to ask questions about their beloved vehicles, often giving delighted visitors interesting stories and education about the cars they are viewing. “We present all kinds of motorized craziness,” says Freedman. “Our mission statement is sophistication with a dash of fun, authenticity, originality and preservation in a welcoming atmosphere.” Some of the highlights of the day include the staging of the cars from 8:30am-11am, the judging from 11am-2pm, and earlier on, when, as Freedman puts it, “There is that incredible moment before anything happens when the sun is coming up…where all of a sudden, the stillness and movie-set-like quality of Carmel happens. It’s a special moment.” Beyond the cars, the event aims to be a place where people can get together, meeting new
friends and seeing familiar faces, munching on a pretzel from a local bakery, enjoying the rarity of so many unique cars together in downtown Carmel, and listening to the judges announce the winners before heading to a meal at a local restaurant. Freedman says the key for all of those producing the event, which is spread out over 18 blocks in downtown Carmel, is seeing all the smiling faces. “It makes me happy,” he says. “It’s all based on the spirit of volunteerism.” ■

Tales Trail from the
Exploring the Monterey Peninsula on Horseback By Brett Wilbur
S
ometimes the best way to rediscover the wonders of our area is from a new perspective.
“The number one draw of the Monterey Peninsula for me is the incredible natural beauty,” says Carmel Realty Company Broker Associate Greg Kraft. “I never get tired of it, and it is a magical place to see on horseback.” Kraft finds a unique connection to nature and a way to tap into peaceful moments through riding here. He, like other Carmel Realty Company and Monterey Coast Realty agents and staff, enjoys both the competitive aspect of riding and the tranquility gained from being around horses. “The Monterey Peninsula is so ideal for horseback riding because there are endless amounts of trails and accessibility,” says Kraft. “There are quite a few good horseback trainers and lots of horse people.”
Elizabeth Dini
Realtor® ■ Carmel Realty Company Growing up, like many children, Elizabeth “Liz” Dini dreamt of having horses. “The best I got were Breyer (toy) horses, and I cherished each and every one,” she says. “Having a horse was not something my family could afford, so by the time I was in my twenties, I had pretty much given up on the idea. Then, during a trip to The Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort in Solvang, I had the opportunity to participate in team penning. I raised my hand, ended up on a horse and had the thrill of a lifetime. When I got home from that trip, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much fun I’d had, and my spark for a horse was once again ignited.” Soon after, Dini met her now best friend, who opened up the horse world for her. “I started taking lessons through her, first English, to find my balance, and then I transitioned to a Western saddle,” Dini says. “My daughter Melissa and son Joe also took lessons, but Joe quickly discovered he preferred to be on the ground caring for horses.” Melissa stayed with English riding and went on to compete at a high level. Dini trained to do reining and cattle sorting, and finally got a horse of her own.
“I had several horses before I met Maverick, a 3-year-old dark Palomino gelding with a mane and tail the same color blond as my hair,” she says. “My trainer was training him to be a reining horse, where the rider is given a pattern and must memorize it quickly then go into the arena and repeat the pattern. “This was all fine with me until the day I signed up for a cattle sorting event. Maverick and I never looked back. We agreed that from that day forward we would trail ride, gather cattle on the ranches and cattle sort in the pen. I quickly learned that Maverick, like me, is too competitive to ‘hold the gate,’ so we would be inside the herd cutting out the calves. Cattle sorting is a fast, but deliberate process to move the calves around in the pen, and Maverick did most of the work.” Dini says the plan was for her and her daughter to each have a horse, but her horse family at one point grew into seven horses. “We were living in Carmel Valley on several acres, with a barn and turnouts,” she says. “We added a small arena just to keep the horses legged-up. At some point, we decided to breed one of the mares. She foaled a beautiful buckskin colt. We raised him until it was time for him to find his forever home.” Dini won a silver buckle competing in a cattle sorting event at the Las Estrellas Del Valle ride, a fundraiser for the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation.
“That was the day I realized just how competitive I am,” she laughs. “The adrenaline starts and everything else falls away. For those brief moments in the arena, nothing else matters.”
Greg Kraft
Broker Associate ■ Carmel Realty Company Greg Kraft started horseback riding as a 10-year-old child growing up in Illinois. Since moving to the Monterey Peninsula 48 years ago, he’s found horse heaven, especially at The Santa Lucia Preserve. “It’s idyllic,” Kraft says. “I’ve ridden hundreds of miles of horse trails at The Preserve. It’s beautifully maintained with access into the wilderness and a very fine equestrian center.” Continued on page 70

Kraft remembers the days where it was very common to see what were called “backyard horses” and kids rode throughout different neighborhoods in Monterey County. He also used to play polo at Pebble Beach, although the polo fields are no longer there. “I actually rode a lot in Pebble Beach,” he says. “It’s surprising how much open land there is and it’s pretty amazing what you can do there.” Kraft also enjoys riding at Garland Ranch Regional Park, Jacks Peak Park, Toro Park, and in the backcountry, although the scenic beauty and phenomenal trails of The Preserve remain his favorite place to ride. He rides both English and Western. “I can’t think of anything that’s more relaxing,” he says. “I feel connected to nature through the horse and that brings me great pleasure.”

to care for the animals and the stalls. It was a great experience. I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and power of horses. It started as a mix of love and fear.” Ucelli now rides dressage at Vista Nadura Horse Stables in Carmel Valley, and she also sets out on horseback on the trails at Garland Ranch Regional Park. She aims to ride at least three times a week. “It’s purely for pleasure,” she says. “Actually, when I moved to California, I got my first horse, Bocelli. He is half Andalusian and half Friesian. Having your own horse is an incredible experience with the bonding and the silent language you learn. It’s very therapeutic. “When you are at the barn you have to forget time; you can’t be in a hurry with a horse,” she adds.
Realtor® ■ Monterey Coast Realty
Horseback riding brings Ucelli joy in body, mind and spirit.
Alessia Ucelli started horseback riding during the summer as a teenager in England.
“The connection with these beautiful powerful animals is amazing,” she says. “There’s the feeling of freedom when cantering and from being outside in nature. Also, you disconnect from all external worries and learn how to be present in the moment.” ■
“It was nothing serious,” she says, “but there were really fun camps where we would learn the basic riding skills and how
