Choose your lifestyle in complete freedom, 57 acres of a resort-like family compound without community association rules, dues or architectural committees.

About HawkRidge Ranch Merv Griffin’s former “ranch in the mountains” has been lovingly restored and updated by Merv’s friend and former CEO of the Griffin Group into an extraordinary family compound and private retreat. The 57 acre hilltop estate features a collection of private cottages and guest suites surrounded by lawns and entertainment areas. A 2,180 sq. ft. glass-walled family building is the centerpoint for gatherings and includes an expansive living room, dining areas seating 20+, kitchen, wood burning fireplace and extensive eastern and southern valley views. Seven gracious suites, once visited by Ethel Kennedy and a host of Merv's celebrity pals, offer ample room for family and friends for a total of 10 bedrooms including a family bunkroom and Merv's Cottage with a kitchen, fireplace, master bedroom, children's bedroom, guest bedroom and two bathrooms. A recent addition to the property is the 2230 sq. ft. Entertainment Center which includes a huge game room, granite indoor/outdoor wet bar, wood-burning fireplace, 14-seat HD theater with 120” screen, sophisticated audiovisual system throughout the building with multiple flat screen TV's and indoor/outdoor music systems, exercise room and shower room. Two acres of terraced south-facing vineyards produce “AlpacaRidge” Sauvignon Blanc and “HawkRidge” Pinot Noir labels, both of which are licensed for commercial sale. Four more acres of vines can be planted on additional restored terraces. Enjoy time spent outdoors riding horses on the property or in neighboring Garland Ranch through your private entrance. Horses can roam in the numerous fenced pastures or join company with the nine gentle and curious alpacas and six miniature sheep. Fresh eggs are gathered daily from the chicken coop. In addition to the glorious valley views and room to roam, the estate offers an 1800 sq. ft. utility barn and workshop, 1523 sq. ft. garage and wine cellar, greenhouse, 1,370 sq. ft. Caretakers house as well as numerous additional outbuildings. Enjoy gardens of Dahlias, Geraniums, Irises, Hydrangeas, African Daisies, Azaleas and Daylilies. Take a walk along Eva Gabor's expansive rose gardens. She wandered among them each morning inhaling their fragrance. (Two of her prized bushes, a red rose and a yellow one, later won first place ribbons at the 2012 Carmel Valley Garden Show). Fields of Lavender and Rosemary and Jasmine vines sweetly scent the grounds. Organic vegetable gardens, orchards and multiple berry bushes provide treats to complement all of the senses.

Eastwood recalled a dinner at the ranch: “He had Cary Grant. Lucille Ball, James Stewart, everybody.”

Cary Grant, with a mystified expression, says to Merv Griffin during a weekend stay at Hawkridge: “Why would you ever leave this place!”

Merv’s reply to Cary Grant: “Cary, I promise you, the ranch will be here when we get back.”

This spectacular redwood deck surrounding a huge ancient oak tree, believed to be 800 years old, has hosted the likes of Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Carl Reiner as well as Fortune 500 CEOs and Wall Street financiers.

Griffin's famed fight with Donald Trump in 1988 was plotted around the deck's table for twelve.

The Vineyard In 1981, four years after purchasing the ranch, Merv Griffin planted a small vineyard on a south-facing slope on the ranch high above Hitchcock Canyon. As was always the case with Merv, there was a story behind the story. After he bought the ranch in 1977, he began inviting friends to join him in enjoying its many benefits.

Yet from those surviving vines, beginning in the mid-1980’s Merv harvested the grapes and bottled his Mont Merveilleux label Sauvignon Blanc. After he acquired the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills in 1986, Merv began serving his wine at the hotel. Wine from his vineyard was produced and bottled for him subsequently by Joullian Vineyards, and in 2007 (the last year his wine was commercially One of those had been skeet shooting. As Merv bottled) Joullian Vineyards 2007 Merv Griffin recounts the story, there had been a skeet range on Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Carmel Valley) was rated the property for 15 years before he bought the ranch. at 87 points by Wine Enthusiast: “It was one of the things that interested me in the “A nicely crisp wine, dry and citrusy, with mouthproperty in the first place.” But his plan to use the watering acidity that makes it clean and zesty. Shows shooting range soon ran afoul of his neighbors, even lemongrass, fig and smoky oak flavors, with a touch though his nearest neighbor was half a mile away. As of gooseberry.” the local newspaper told the story later: “The ‘shotgun deal’ started in 1980. His neighbors Because the other vines had been damaged by the say they were awakened Easter Sunday morning with rains and were not replanted, the remaining original what sounded like ‘the second coming of World War terraces soon were overgrown with ginesta bushes II.’ Instead it was the sound of guns fired by Griffin and disappeared. Following the purchase of the and his friends as they shot skeet from his home. … ranch from Merv’s estate in 2008 by the current He said he agreed to stop the shooting voluntarily, owners, they set about clearing the brush from but that the media ‘went crazy’ over the story. He the overgrown terraces, restoring the deer fencing then decided to plant the vineyard. ‘It is a beautiful around the vineyard. In 2009 they planted several of hill,’ he said. ‘I thought I may as well beautify it even those terraces with Pinot Noir and Syrah grapes. more.’” Hence in 1981 came the vineyard. A total of 1250 Pinot Noir vines and 250 Syrah vines Because his favorite wine was made from Sauvignon were planted. In choosing the particular clones Blanc grapes, he planted 6000 vines of them. to plant, they selected Pinot Noir 667 and 777 Unfortunately the next year a severe El Nino storm ENTAV clones described in UC Davis viticultural washed out most of the newly planted vines, creating publications as among the “most respected” and yet another media story and leaving only a single “most authentic”: acre of remaining vines. “Many of the most respected Pinot noir clones were developed by programs in Dijon, France, and are

commonly known as “Dijon clones” in California. The most authentic Dijon clones are available through the ENTAV-INRA® trademark program. These include Pinot noir ENTAV-INRA® 115, 165, 236, 375, 459, 667, 743, 777, and 943.” Similarly, the Syrah clone selected was Syrah 174 ENTAV. During the period 2009 through 2012, Sauvignon Blanc grapes from the vineyard were harvested, and the wine was produced and bottled at the ranch for non-commercial use by the owners and friends. Beginning with the 2013 harvest, (including the first small harvest from the now four-year-old Pinot Noir vines), the grapes were processed by a highly regarded local winery (Figge Cellars) and yielded approximately 25 cases of 2013 HawkRidge Pinot Noir and 85 cases of 2013 Alpaca Ridge Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are grown without pesticides and using sustainable practices. As is the custom with some small vineyards, Southdown “Babydoll” miniature sheep are allowed to graze in the vineyards during the winter season to control grasses and weeds.

‘It is a beautiful hill,’ he said. ‘I thought I may as well beautify it even more.’”

Friends and Events Throughout its history, every owner of HawkRidge has wanted to share its wonders with family, friends and the community. The special memories of family gatherings at the ranch have been shared over more than seven generations since the 1930’s. For thirty years from the 1970’s through 2000, the extraordinary Griffin extended family held enormous family reunions on the lawns by the pool. A Griffin nephew was married on the “wedding deck” overlooking Hitchcock Canyon to the south. And not surprisingly, the present owners’ youngest son prevailed upon them to hold his own wedding at the ranch followed by a dinner for 120. But not every gathering is a big production. Friends from the neighborhood have been known to sit around the fire pits as an evening fog rolled in, one of them playing haunting melodies on his bagpipes that echoed through the canyon below. The current owners have also shared the ranch from time to time with the nearby communities of Carmel and Monterey, hosting charity fundraising dinners on the expansive lawns, with celebrity chefs offering special entrées. In addition, they have hosted retreat weekends for the boards or executive committees of several scientific and environmental foundations.

Kids and HawkRidge One of the special things about HawkRidge is the opportunity it offers for families, and especially young children, to enjoy learning about and interacting with nature on every level. Whether it is planting, tending and harvesting vegetables in its organic garden, or feeding its chickens and gathering their eggs, or walking among and feeding its gentle and curious alpacas and Babydoll sheep with their teddy-bear faces. Every day at the ranch brings its own special memories. The extraordinary beauty of HawkRidge with its panoramic views in every direction encourages wandering along its many walking and riding paths. The old farm road winds through the ranch among its ancient oaks and pastures until it reaches the top of the ridge and the ranch’s private entrance to Garland Park. Garland Park’s high meadows were once a part of the original ranch itself. The ranch is currently home to the owners’ two Border Collies, “Max” and “Zena”, and “Mike” the Anatolian Shepherd, as well as their two black barn cats “Blackjack” and “Chilly.” In recent years, the ranch was also home to “Too Tall” the mule, “Goldie” a palomino mare, and “Flame” a chestnut gelding. Many happy days were spent riding in Garland Park to the top of its highest ridge. The current owners’ grandchildren learned to ride at HawkRidge, feeding and caring for its horses and watching them graze in its many pastures. Until recently, the ranch was also home to heritage breed Irish Dexter cattle, a rare breed of small cattle from southwestern Ireland, originally imported to England in the 1860’s and later brought to the US. Life at HawkRidge can include any level of involvement with nature. The ranch can be simply a family compound with its extraordinary gardens and views without animals, a family resort with its own “petting zoo”, or a functioning ranch with as much involvement as desired with livestock such as horses, cattle, sheep and goats. HawkRidge also has its native inhabitants. Deer wander the ranch from time to time outside the high deer fence that surrounds the vineyard and gardens. Wild turkeys periodically visit - one day over thirty of them, some of them roosting on the roof of the Pool House or, better still, peering into the dining room windows. Dozens of quail scurry across the lawns. Owls have been seen perching in the giant oaks keeping watch in the evening. And of course, red-tailed hawks, for which the ranch was named, can sometimes be seen circling high above the ranch, swooping down swiftly in pursuit of their prey. The wonders of nature are on display each day at HawkRidge.
