Every great architect is - necessarily - a great poet. He must be a great original interpreter of his time, his day , his age. - Frank Lloyd Wright
In the courtyard, it joins with the open corridors, the strong horizontal lines and the intersecting planes of the roof overhangs to create an effect that is startlingly like the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The strong cross axis of corridors organizing the house further underscores the connection to Wright. Pelli studied Wright’s houses as a student, and while his work has gone in other directions, he has never lost his deep admiration for them. “I’ve always felt that no one designed better houses than Wright,” Pelli says.
“I suggested to my clients that they call the house Atalaya, which means ‘lookout tower’ in Spanish.” - Cesar Pelli
The architect erected a guest wing at the house’s southeast corner. “The vertical composition of the windows unifies the three floors into a monumental whole,” he says. “As a contrast, the decks and roof are strong horizontals that draw the eye around the corners of the building.”
“A building has integrity just like a man. And just as seldom. - Ayn Rand
“Higher ceilings allow the use indirect lighting, which is much healthier and reduces glare. - Helmut Jahn
Pelli’s style has never been easy to characterize, in part because he combines modernist influences with historical and contextual ones. This house is no exception. It might best be called a kind of soft-edged modernism, less dependent on bold geometries than on soft textures, the careful ordering of spaces and well-considered details. Architectural Digest, July 2001
“At a dinner party one should eat wisely but not too well, and talk well but not too wisely. - W. Somerset Maugham
“They can do without architecture who have no olives nor wines in the cellar. - Henry David Thoreau
“Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers where I can walk undisturbed. - Walt Whitman
“I don’t divide architecture, landscape and gardening; to me they are one.” - Luis Barragan
“Your library is your paradise.” - Desiderius Erasmus “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero

About Cesar Pelli: Born in 1926, Cesar Pelli is an Argentinian American architect known for designing some of the world’s tallest buildings and other major urban landmarks. The AIA listed Pelli as among the ten most influential living American architects. Perhaps his most famous works are the Petronas Twin Towers, which, for a time, were the world’s tallest buildings. He also designed the New Reagan International Terminal and the Financial Center complex in Manhattan, next to the since-fallen World Trade Center. He has received hundreds of awards for design excellence. He was awarded a Doctor of Arts degree from Yale in 2008 and received the Lifetime Achievement award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in 2008. In 2012, the Konex Foundation from Argentina awarded him the Diamond Konex Award for Viusal Arts as the most important artist in the last decade in his country.
