Architectural Typology Public Educational Facility / University South Australian Marine and Agriculture Research Institute, an avant-garde agriculture academy in the Lot 14 Precinct along North Terrace, aims to revolutionise farming practices. Its resilient scaffolded cubes ensure year-round vegetable harvests, adapting to salt exposure and rising sea levels. SAMARI introduces Adelaide’s first commercial-scale aquaponics system, conserving water and fostering sustainability. It achieves this through its innovative modular deep water culture facade trays (DWCs). Catering to farmers, students, and researchers, the design optimises vegetation growth with strategic square placement, guaranteeing maximum yield in all seasons. The facility’s centerpiece is an aquaponic learning module, promoting the harmonious relationship between fish and plants. Through workshops and programs, SAMARI educates and inspires eco-conscious students, farmers and researchers, poised to transform agriculture in a sustainable way.

Architectural Typology Public and Government Gallery with private shareholders (Airbnb stays) The vision for this project is an innovative, multidisciplinary museum of art and design. The Exhibitionist is as response to the Adelaide Contemporary International Design competition for galleries but differentiates itself with the introduction of accommodation for short-term stays as a part of Airbnb’s OMG fund. It is a landmark of Adelaide and an intersection between both contemporary and renaissance galleries, featuring a modern perforated mesh, organic atrium, and classical refined vaulted arches. This project was completed in groupwork. Both working in my team (GAHD studio) and having a client brief helped to simulate a professional environment like that of an architectural practice. We also had the opportunity to work alongside and receive feedback from engineers from ARUP and architects from COX to helping to improve out communication skills and understanding of technical drawings.

concept development_ 01 programming Mapping the vertical spacing and use of the building. The division of these spaces helps to create a staggered and layered building program that sparks curiosity and connectivity with function.

Ground Floor Plan 1:100

02 organic atrium A central, curved atrium will penetrate throughout the entirety of the building. This creates a strong connection between indoor and outdoor environments, allowing natural light and ventilation.

03 organic atrium The addition of activitiy/public space will help improve connectivity amongst visitors and their interactions with the building program. The carving of these generated spaces also extends views outwards towards the street engaging those who pass by.

04 laying of materials The intersection of various materials helps to create a multi-layered form. This strong concrete vaulted arch base combined with the filtering perforated white mesh allows for a conjunction of materiality to occur. First Floor Plan 1:100 Carmen Grdosic

01 programming The main entrance on North Terrace, key facade, and roof top terraces are all located on the northern boundary of the building to maximise optimal lighting conditions. Additionally, the curved atrium is located at the centre of the building and acts as a light well, capturing and extended light into the interior of the building’s floors..

02 vaulted arches Subtraction used to curate the curvaceous form of the building. Detailed subtraction of the terracotta arch base of the building, forming a series of vaulted arch spaces.

03 layered perforated mesh The design will incorporate a lightweight, perforated skin as a means to filter light throughout the building. This will allow for a sense of movement in the architecture, creating a euphoric atmosphere. At night, the filtration will emphasise the concept of architecture as art becoming an icon of the City West skyline.

Architectural Typology Public Commercial Farm to Table Lab / Eatery / Retail F2T is a farm-to-table approach to food sourcing and water conservation and filtration. The proposal aims to conserve and recycle water from SAMARI’s aquaponic system. Conserved aquaponic effluent is filtered and brought to F2T to extracts nutrients and salt to preserve an array of local foods, and recycle fertiliser nutrients to be reused in SAMARI’s planting program. F2T houses lessons in workshop on salting preservation techniques for food to emphasise the significance of minimising food and water waste and making responsible choices for a healthier lifestyle. Designing through the scope of three protagonists created detailed interior program that was suited to specific needs and desires for each user. This created an inside-out design approach and developed new strategies for designing architectural solutions.

project brief_

concept development_

Architectural Typology Public Commercial Farm to Table Lab / Eatery / Retail The samari fish reserve and urban wetland had a major focus on water conservation and the filtration and recycling of water during the water cycle. The wetland acts as a catchment and filtration system or samari’s aquaponic facade and reserve for the fish utilised in this process. The waste water generated from the building’s facade is recirculated throughout the wetland and filtered by the reeds and riparian vegetation throughout its series of pools. The water travels from the sediment basin at the back end of the site, towards the outlet pool adjacent to the samari building so that the filtered clean water can be recycled back into the building for use. This process focuses on water recycling and conservation as well as the agency of the circular economy and is a pivotal theme here at samari. Throughout this proposal, wetland activities such as kayaking, swimming, walking, bike riding, and a catch & release fishing program are encouraged for users. As well as, integrated outdoor educational workshops learning about fish species and farming.
