In Carnatic music, there is a term that is used for composers: vaakgeyakara. A vaakgeyakara is one who creates both the Vaak (lyrical) and Geya (musical) aspects of a composition. The word Vaak means “that which is being said”. The abstract meaning of this word makes it the perfect name to describe a magazine that is meant to discuss and promote this nuanced art form. Our ancient Tamil poetess has said that to have a good mind one should have a good vaak. Vani, the goddess of all art forms dwells in our vaak. I hope and pray that she manifests herself in this VAAK as well.
