Don't give your power away! I consider a friend of mine to be a difficult person to get along with. S h e likes to ask me personal questions, like how much money do you make? If I don't answer, she is not happy and gossips about me to other people I know. I have been holding my anger inside me to the extent that I avoid her and do not participate in events that I would otherwise enjoy. The following poem found on the bulletin board in the Carnegie Learning Centre has helped me to realize that I am giving my own power away: The One who Angers You Controls you Don't give Anyone that Power! especially the One who does it intentionally. I finally learned that I was giving my power away when I reacted to my friend's behaviour. I was angry because I expected her to behave differently. Had I accepted her for who she was and had I understood that everybody is different, I probably would not be so angry. By learning how to deal with my reactions when somebody pushes my buttons, I will not be controlled by this particular individual. I'm learning not to avoid participating in events where she will be. In this way, I believe that I regain my power- a power that belongs to me! Christmas is fast approaching! Don't give your power away. Consider participating in events that you might enjoy. Perhaps you will be surprised!

lt's a mans' world, No place for an impure self-assured girl Confonn to societies' ways? No, I've got my priorities straight I'll fill my own mo uld I'd rather kill than do what I'm told! I don't understand the hype of a stereo-type I'm confident from within, I'd rather look like Rumplestiltskin than Paris Hilton I'd love to see the day when I go see a chick-flick Where you see a few dicks and not 10 pairs of tits! Again, it's a mans' world, I don't have a choice lt's about getting him hard, not getting me moist! He's the man if all he wants is a quick easy fuck But if you want the same you're a dirty s leazy slut I demand a re-count, who's taking score?! Who said females can be the only whores I Ooops ... I'm sorry to be so out spoken, If I damaged your ego, please go, I hope its broken. My inner goodness fuels my inner goddess, Beauty from within's what keeps me modest. In this mans' world I choose to go against the grain, Or this mad girl wou ld lose it and go insane - Melissa Q uinn 2008 -
Turning a corner so when you tum the corner, you never guess what you see, sometimes surprising, sometimes captivating, sometimes blinding sometimes exciting. sometimes horrific, sometimes terri fic, each corner I turn brings new awareness and its captured moments in which, in turn, you cannot turn back the hands of time; that may seem sublime goochy goochy goo! I'm here to smoosh you not loose you, at violent times we sell our soul, turn a new page a new chapter and live happily ever after, dreams were not made without sacrifice in all the corners you stood upon and waited for a prevalent lightning bolt to strike you down, all the tears were meant for something, and in your weaknesses, he stood at the door and waited for you to knock and in vite him into your heart Love Life, lust life, embrace life Be the change as your new life gets more illuminated ! Food Prices to Rise? Professor Michael Van Massow, ofthe University of Guelph, has issued a report which predicts that food prices will rise in 2013. Sylvain Charkebois, aU ofG economist, said that the anticipated increase will have a s ignificant effect upon low-income families. On a similar note, George Weton Ltd., one of Canada' s largest bakeries, announced a planned five percent increase in prices to take effect on April 1st. It cited rising global prices of wheat, oil and sugar as the reason for the increase. Submitted by Sam Snobelen

The Stone Cold Truth, Part 1 In 1985, w hile manic, I gave away to the telepath ic community the entire content of my mind, heart and soul : for the anima ls. (To be co ntinued) Stephin Belkin
Author's note: What the Newsletter means to me. T he Stone Cole Truth Seri es is a perfect example of wh y the newsletter is so important. (By the way, I need now to apolog ise to Paul Taylor for taking so long to say this.) I have Bi- Polar Disorder. Even though it is the milder form of the disease, 1 want you to think of it like this: There are times when having Bi-Polar is li ke being chased by a tiger to the edge of a c liff- you have no choice but to jump. Think of the news letter then as a scraggly tree growing underneath the edge of the cliff. 1f it we ren't there, there would be nothing to grab onto when yo u need to jump .. . Eventually the tiger goes away and yoOu can scramb le back up and go o n keep ing on. Without the newsletter well, 1j ust don't know how to put it in words ... Stephen Belkin So that' s to Paul and the newsletter vo lunteers and hey, Paul, maybe someday you can tell me whatever happened to the monkey house. - Stephen (The tiger, cliff & tree is from Zen Buddhism.)

arne te ews etter An example of how someone's energy finds its way to the pages of this paper: The Library on the Centre's first floor makes a few dozen photocopies of the crossword puzzles appearing in a daily paper. These are left in a shelf folder for public access. The paper is, of course, only used on one side and the blank back can be used for thoughts, doodling and so on. A regular supporter picked up a few sheets a couple of days ago and found one piece already used and put back. He thought it deserved a look-see by more than his eyes, so brought it to the Newsletter office. What was on that blank side is the art on the last page of this coloured section. Amazing!
1986-2012
The Carnegie Newsletter has been in print since August 15, 1986. With this issue- December 15 2012 - I recognise a personal anniversary. Twency-six years ago I became the editor with the December 15'h 1986 edition. For the first 6 years or so there was an edition on 51 January 1 but the distant possibility that there were individuals who'd survive their New Year's Day angst without the hot-off-the-press copy of the latest proved true Methinks 1991 saw the last N ew Year's baby and it's been 23 issues a year since, This is a listing of the names of all contributors over the last quarter-century.. plus about 16 more months. !he breadth and depth of this incredible body of work ~s hard to describe in words. There's an index of every Issue from the first until 2008 on the Simon Fraser University computer and hopefully access to the administration of the database will permit getting it up A to date. The URL is http://chodarr.or2/taxonomv/term/3 Learning how to use this may have saved a lot of t ime, but relying on stone-age methods, I just went through every page of every issue and printed out the names appearing under each article or poem. Names of the equally excellent people who worked on collating, stapling, folding and distributing the paper over the years are scattered. Like the written stuff, som e people helped once, for 20 minutes or an hour; others came twice a month for years. It's been < humbling experience to have all these peopl e help aJl seem satisfied to hear "Thanks for your help." Financial contributors are known only by first name so no one could put them on hit-lists. All in all, the invisible victories of this endeavour a simply astonishing. The Anti-War Xmass Dove
(This poem was written by potential songv.rriter Darren Kent Morgan. He recited it and other works at the Carnegie Poetry Night, held the first Saturday every month. The Jam Session every Tuesday (sign-up from 4-6:30) and his mother have inspired turning poetry into song.]
I know you can see it When you look in my eye The three letters I know about are spelt T R Y Try Harder Try Smarter There's no giving up Learn lessons from experience So you will never say 'Enough.' Get help if you can and if not have no fear Like a brave soldier you can make it solo if you persevere. Stay safe, ask questions So many questions it might hurt but yet it's all part of the process that you cannot desert, Your wishes, your dreams All boil down to your time The oh so precious moments that your fate has in mind. Learn again, make new rules and try not to be a fool, For sadly life wi ll watch as you win or lose with your tools The so-important tools you develop as you, so hold them close, take no commands ' is something that I know So if you really want to win just like me and it's a better future that you really need to see Then get up and fight Every day in every way with all your might And if you die before you win you sti ll will go out right. Darren Morgan
As this sleigh of Xmass 2012 draws nigh Th is red beard poet gets his contactHigh For he sees it drawn not by beasts But by hope, trust, love, friendsip. Loved ones fall from wildest winterSkys Blessing us to transcend all whys And e nnoble all this mortal! day Who joyous pull this magic sleigh. So hope, trust, love, sit by fireside And warm us more than log-flames More than material presents given More than eyes of lovers riven. Our Xmass sleigh shall fly today Along with every immortal way Shape, form, taste of love, To inspire this anti-war dove! John alan douglas

HOMELAND Passive resistance, civil disobedience, marc hing, in solidarity, sharing ideas, inspiration, and contagious enthusiasm supporting noble just causes, wrenching control back from the robber barons, money-changers and carpet-baggers relentless in their pursuit of gobs more riches, strafing the community with bulldozers and backhoes. Never-ending degradation, humiliation and heartless concern for no one but themselves and their corrupt cronies of opportunism, hooking up and pulling in lOU's from their politico-masters whom they've cozied up to for what seems like forever. That's just simply the way it works with the upper crust of high society. Standing firm they must be confronted at all costs .. always pushing back with persistence, tenacity and cunning; to be cool when confronted face to face in the heat of our struggles for all it's worth, whatever the cost come what may. Never to be intimidated or to back down, withdraw, or retreat. The powers-that-be want our neighbourhood which lies on ancient, traditional Coast Salish land. It's to be viciously transformed into a horrific extension ofYuppie & Preppy Gastown by all means possible: gentrification personified. How bad is that? Can you imagine any worse case scenario!? It's been slowly creeping up on us for years, starting with the Van Home building [named after the blank who tried to bulldoze Stanley Park]. Check out what's happening on East Cordova, East Hastings, around Army & Navy: high-end condos, five-star restaurants, uptight snobby designer beer joints all with an extremely 'upscale' clientele; across from Woodwards with SFU's Goldcorp whatever and some dude has pushed out all the artists and funky little clothing and convenience stores to make way for a carbon copy of decadent, ostentatious, sterile uncaring Yaletown ... how bad is that!?! So stay strong & diligent as sentries trying to hold back the fireworks from the gates of Hell. We shall succeed, it will be done. We can love in a sharing, caring way, the polar opposite of their way of winner take all. This community ain't a Las Vegas casino, despite the narrow mentality cum train of thought to make it one. This is and always be a community of friendly neighbours, families & individuals who have been the stalwarts and benevolent caretakers of the Downtown Eastside for centuries. ROBYN LIVINGSTONE

In 2003 The Heart ofthe Community: The Best of the Carnegie Newsletter was published. It contains some of the writing, poetry and artwork of the first 15 years of the paper. It's reprinted here as nothing is out of date- the exploitation and forces arrayed in and around the Downtown Eastside are as strong, alive and deadly as ever.
Words for the Last Page This book marks the 16th birthday of the Carnegie Newsletter. The first edition was put together in a storage closet in the basement for Aug. 15, 1986 - !2 pages, 6o copies. It's been "that @OjoX#(*&A$ rag!'' to 'the only paper I read from cover to cover every time!!" but the invisible victories are much deeper and more profound. The Newsletter has become a foundation for expression of universal principles, for gathering allies and propagating the ideology of justice. The Downtown Eastside is a microcosm of global struggles. "In every living being there is a thirst for limitlessness"; the struggle is to progress without getting overcome with the sky-licking greed of humans, the impossibility of quenching this spiritual thirst with the desert of drugs and booze, money and power. The dogmas of criminality and cleanup being identical are still dogma -bad theories presented as truth. The prime directive is to elevate the dignity of women, a struggle expressed through building housing and a new Women's Centre, Breaking the Silence around violence against women, and the hidden obscenity of 59 missing

fJ woruc:u ctuu Lue earns or over 125 women in just a few years. The prime directive is to raise the consciousness of humanity; the struggle to expose dark forces of gentrification, superiority complexes, forced dispersion of residents without concern for consequences and the driving greed and self-interest mistaken on purpose for enlightenment. The Carnegie Newsletter is a pole in the spiritual magnet of the Downtown Eastside. Alt eyes are on us as the hub of a cosmic wheel, but our incredible strength is invisible, intangible, often inoomprehensible. It is told to investors speculators and interested parties alike: "you have to talk to the community" and it's fair notice. We are not vain-glorious, nor is anything exempt from the droll dabbling of dilettantes, but the networking and connections are invisible victories of enormous magnitude. At the wild risk of whimsically willing a little wisp of wisdom to wing forth: Baba Nam Kevalam - love is all there is. 1
