Penny Goldsmith and Nicky Dunlop A Very Expensive Pencil This June marks the end of an era for PovNet. Penny Goldsmith, who has led PovNet since its foundation in 1997" is leaving the organization for new adventures. PovNet provides online tools that facilitate communication, community & access to information around poverty-related issues in British Columbia & Canada. We work to collect relevant news & resources of use to advocates, community workers, marginalized communities&the general public PovNet was founded by a group of anti-poverty

advocates in Vancouver

in 1997 and quickly became a lifeline for

advocates across BC - the first post to the emaillists, in December was from an advocate in Terrace, who said, "Hello! Hello! Is anybody out there? I'm all alone." Much ofPovNet's work in the first few years was basic help with technology - Penny was literally helping advocates to turn on their computers. Although PovNet uses technology as the tool to connect advocates, it really is just a tool: as Penny likes, to say, "A very expensive pencil."

PovNet has continued to grow from these beginning, introducing a web site with online information for advocates and the public, online courses in 2004 and this year, we'll launch advocapedia, a resource for advocates to share decisions, submissions and other work. Throughout this work, Penny has been the heart and soul of PovNet. Her dedication to the advocates that PovNet serves, and the public who rely on their advice, means that PovNet is never just about technology, it's about warm bodies. The PovNet Board wishes Penny well in her new adventures.

The PovNet Board is delighted to announce that NiCky Dunlop has accepted the position of Executive Coordinator ofPovNet, effective June 1,20]5. Nicky had the good fortune of spending many years working as a Legal Advocate in both Williams Lake and in the Downtown Eastside. During her time as an advocate Nicky also worked with youth who were living in various degrees of homelessness. After leaving front line work, Nicky filled the position of Executive Director ofTRAC, until her son Rhys was bom in 2012. Nicky reconnected with PovNet when the opportunity to work from home came up and has been in the role of Training Coordinator since 2013.

As far back as Nicky can remember, PovNet has been at the centre of her work, either as an advocate or as a member of the PovNet team. Although she is as sorry as anyone to see Penny leave, she is grateful & excited to have the opportunity to expand her role within PovNet, and is further comforted by the fact that no one ever really leaves PovNet. May 2015 Community Update on Correspondence from Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation Re: Assignment of Maintenance Rights Dear Community Partner, The Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation (MSDSI) recently sent some of their clients a letter about changes to the requirements to assign their family maintenance rights.

Your agency may be receiving enquires about this from Ministry clients who are unclear about the meaning I of this change. We thought it might be useful to provide you with some clarification.

Before May 1st 2015, MSDSI required divorced/separated clients who were potentially eligible to receive maintenance payments from an estranged partner to assign their rights to permit the Ministry to pursue payment, or obtain an order and agreement for payment, of maintenance benefits.

As of May 1st 2015, individuals are no longer required to assign their family maintenance rights to the Family Maintenance Program in order to apply for or receive disability benefits or income assistance.

Clients who have already assigned their family maintenance rights now have the choice as to whether they want the Ministry to continue to assist them with their maintenance services. Clients who want to continue to receive maintenance services from MSDSI should contact the Ministry by June 5th 2015 by calling 1-866866-0800. Clients who do not wish to continue to receive maintenance do not have to contact the Ministry or take any further action.

Kathryn: Your article in the "24 Hours" today is nice, respectful of the poor but, "inclusiveness" will never get acceptance. It cannot work!

If you are rich in resources and career, etc., you will not wish to commune with the poor, the reviled and their unacceptable social habits. Living side by side, regardless of social standing, will not satisfy either side. There will be problems.

Resentment, the very distinct behavior differences between classes will inevitably lead to conflict, accusations, suspicion & police intervention. Unless every condo establishment has a mix of classes, there will be significant differences in property/real estate value.

In addition to issues of social status, people on welfare and/or minimal incomes do not wish to be surrounded by affluence that they cannot share. Simply put, outside of frequenting areas like Granville Island and English Bay to collect returnable waste, there is no pleasure in watching "others" enjoying lunches at cafes, eating ice creams on summer days and drinking lattes at Starbucks. In other words, it's no fun being on the outside!

The mayor has a domestic issue in which he has to move from the doorstep of Point Grey. Will his new condo environment downtown include accommodations for subsidized housing? It should, since this was one of his original election platforms. Perhaps, like West Vancouver and Granville Street, there will be accommodations for nder-paid domestics who serve their masters in their lofty residences!

You should also realize that the poor, which includes people with all levels of mental and physical impediments, need support services & soup kitchens to help them struggle through their agonizing misfit existences. Not everyone on social assistance and low pensions qualify for annual bus passes either. Therefore, fragmentation of the poorer populations adds yet another hurdle to reaching needed vital services.

I'm sure you are familiar with the saying: "misery loves company." Poor and rejected people have a real sense of commune & make it through this life in each other's company. This is a God given, at no charge, gift shared between poorer classes. Unfortunately,

the rich are too private, too busy & too afraid to share their lives with outsiders!

Economic Rationalization of a Higher Minimum Wage Late last year, one of the new~ broadcasters gave a brief story of a woman who worked three jobs a day so that she could support her family.

On a lunch break, the woman went to her car to take a short nap. It was winter cold, so she turned on the car motor to get some heat. Several hours later the woman was found dead in her car, caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Thus, the state had to take charge of her children and tried to place them in foster homes. The children were left without the only mother they'd ever known & the government was on the hook for childcare payments.

It would have been much cheaper for the government and taxpayer if this woman had only one job with a livable wage.

Good old Bill "Bubba" Clinton paved the path to this poor woman's death by ordering that people on welfare had to get ajob or they would be cut off.

"Bubba" didn't have a billy goat's sense enough to worry about a livable wage for this forced subsistence slavery; the economy was getting better & he had the support of the dumb right wing masses of America, so this simple woman wearily went for an eternal nap.

The point is: After the greedy smoke clears, a higher, livable wage would increase employment. .

CARNEGIE KITCHEN CONCERNS Over the last several months, the kitchen has experienced /dealt with several major plumbing issues in the dish washing area related to the grease trap. Unfortunately, the extent of this problemhas also negatively impacted the-library as well. After a thorough assessment of the problem by a variety of professionals, it has been decided to replace the grease trap and some of the piping. The work will completed by a contractor, Davidson Bros. Mechanical and is scheduled for June 3 - 5.

This is not a simple or quick/easy job and will impact the Centre as the kitchen will not have access to the dish washing area at all for the duration of the repairs.

The kitchen will be open as usual, however the menu will be adjusted accordingly and we will have to revert to paper for service. To compensate patrons for the limited menu options, we will offer free coffee, tea, juice with all meals. Don't worry! The kitchen will still make some healthy, delicious food & treats.

From the LibrarY John Vaillant, a local author and activist, will be at Carnegie this June io" reading from his new book & answering questions from the public. Ten years ago, Vaillant published his first book, the story of the felling of the Kiidk'yaas, or Golden Spruce, on Haida Gwaii. Five years later, he shifted his attention to Russia where in 1997 a tiger started stalking & killing hunters in an isolated' Siberian village. The Golden Spruce and The Tiger, both as well written as interesting, combine history, interest in nature and the environment, and mystery. Both books became very popular and earned Vaillant many prizes, including the Governor General's Award in 2005 & British Columbia's National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction in '10 This past January, Vaillant decided to give fiction a try, and his first novel is about Mexican immigrants in the U.S. The Jaguar's Children, a page-turner with only good reviews so far, also deals with Vaillant's main interests =history, nature, and great stories. This novel is not only a great reading, you also learn about genetically modified corn, archeology & local people.

John Vaillarx will be reading excerpts from this novel at the Carnegie Theatre on Wednesday June lOth, at 6:30 pm, --come early, we're expecting many people.

A big THANK YOU to Army & Navy for their generosity & for thinking about their neighbours in the Downtown Eastside. Thank you as well to all the members of the DTES community who bought a new pair of shoes for themselves at the sale. I noticed that a number of folks in the neighbourhood were wearing new shoes the day after the sale. '

Seniors' advocate says some B.C. elderly giving up basic needs to afford housing TAMSYN BURGMANN

Even as Lorraine Logan and her partner chip away at their condominium mortgage in New Westminster, the 70-yearold recognizes they could lose their security and comfort.

"If something happens to one of us?" she said, slapping one hand against the other. "It's got to be sold Two incomes supporting the mortgage, right? So we're just trying to build up equity before I die!"

The couple is among 93 per cent of British Columbia seniors who are living independently as an aging population faces systemic challenges.

On Thursday, the province's advocate for seniors released a comprehensive report that found housing for older British Columbians must be more affordable, appropriate and available. Isobel Mackenzie urged the government to accept 18 recommendations after canvassing thousands of seniors across B.C. over the past year.

"I really have made it my mission to disabuse people of this notion that all seniors out there are living high off the hog, on a beach in Barbados, and sucking dry all the hardworking British Columbians," she told a news conference packed with seniors.

"There are seniors who need a lot of help & who're in desperate need. That's what happens when you look at the data instead of learning what the situation is by looking around at the people you know."

The report outlines the major challenges weighing on seniors living in each of three situations - independent, assisted living and residential care - and found the support people need most is financial.

Among about 820,000 British Columbians aged 65 or older, half live on incomes of $24,000 per year or less, according to the report.

Mackenzie found some low-income seniors forego basic health care, from dentistry to hearing aids, compression stockings or incontinence supplies.

"So, great. You live in a house that's worth a million dollars in Vancouver," she said.

"If your income is only $22,000 a year, it actually doesn't matter how much your house is worth because what you actually need is money to pay the bills."

Among other recommendations, the report calls on the province to: -:- Increase subsidies through the Shelter Aid for Elderly - Develop a strategy for more rural housing.

- Commit to providing a single room with ensuite bathroom for 95 per cent of residential care beds by 2025.

Housing Minister Rich Coleman declined to be interview [surprise surprise}, but a statement from the ministry said the report is being reviewed.

"Many of the recommendations, if adopted, would require extensive policy work and possibly, changes to legislation," said the statement, which did not provide a time frame.

Is yoga about worshiping Hindu gods, or is it about engaging in advanced stretching and exercise? At its roots, yoga is said to have originated from the ancient worship of Hindu gods, with the various poses representing unique forms of paying homage to these entities. "The ministry of performing exorcism is little known among priests," stated Father Truqui to *The Independent*. "It's like training to be a journalist without knowing how to do an interview."

At the same time, Father Amorth admits that the Roman Catholic Church's notoriety for all kinds of perverted sex scandals is also indicative of demonic activity -- he stated that it represents proof that "the devil is at work inside the Vatican."

"There's homosexual marriage, homosexual adoption, IVF [in-vitro fertilization] and a host of other things," added Monsignor Luigi Negri, the archbishop of Ferrara-Comacchio, about what he says is evidence of the existential evil in society. ,noJ Vatican's chief exorcist warns that practicing yoga is 'satanic' Wednesday, May 06,2015 The successor to Father Gabriele Amorth, the former chief exorcist of the Vatican for 25 years, has come out in condemnation of fantasy novels & yoga, declaring both to cause demonic possession. Speaking to *The Independent* (UK), Father Cesare Truqui explained how the Roman Catholic Church has seen a steady uptick in reports of demonic possession all around the world, and that popular culture pastimes like reading *Harry Potter* novels and engaging in *Vinyasa* are largely to blame.

The popularity of many modern television shows, movies & novels that glorify "demonic" creatures such as vampires & magical wizards has apparently led both young & old alike to engage in certain activities that the Vatican says summon satanic spirits, claims Professor Giuseppe Ferrari. Ferrari recently attended a meeting in Rome where Catholic authorities & delegates discussed how to deal with this alleged demonic possession crisis.

Demonic characters in shows like *True Blood* and *The Vampire Diaries* are often portrayed as beautiful human beings with desirable characteristics & superpowers, which may lure the unsuspecting into dabbling in the occult. Father Cesare says he's seen many an individual speaking in tongues and exhibiting unearthly strength, two attributes that his religion says indicate the possibility of evil spirits inhabiting a person's body.

$11011 Virtually all copies of the last edition of HIDE, #47 JUNE 2014, have been gone for 4 months. There is an account with GoFundMe.com and a goal of $3000 set to raise sufficient funds to print a revised & updated edition. Current response is $25.

A Neighbourhood Small Grant for $1000 was awarded to assist in going ahead with publication.

The next edition of Help i11 the Downtown Eastside will be published for June 2015. The cost last year11,000 English; 1,000 French; 1,000 Spanish - was $3003.

Expenses are recorded by Administration.

The total revenue to date is $11011. The first 3 weeks of Maywi be going over all contacts & strategies to raise the .additional $2000. If $2K is not realised publication will g( ahead with the shortfall made up from existing funds.

UPDATE: Information above was presented to the Finance Committee on May 6. This was to get permission to proceed with 'borrowing' $2000 from Newsletter funds to pay for printing the revised & months-overdue next edition of Help in the Downtown Eastside. Since then an additional $800 has been given in memory of Harold David. This page has been showing the percentage of money to print all 2015 issues of the Carnegie Newsletter as part of an estimated annual cost of $13,000. Actual funds needed but not shown must include an extra $3000 for HIDE. Funding for the paper is now at 83~o of $13,000; it is 74% of total funding required of $16.000. Another $4,000 must be raised to pay for both publications until December 201 5. Financial assistance is still needed.

Addendum: More donations have come in but the exact figures aren't known, due to prep for an audit. Current data will be put in the June 15, 2015 edition.
