The Feb. 19 program featured by Helen Potrebenko, Judy Radul, Gerry Gilbert and Ken Lester. Performance-poetry duo Rhythm Activism and singer-musicians Dave Grepg and 9 Leal also performed. However, at the heart of the poetry demonstration were two poetry round-robins showcasing the work of the following folks: Jancis Andrews, Sheila Baxter, Steve Belkin, David Bouvier, Peter Imm, Evelyn Lau, Tom Lewis, Dave McConnell, Parker McIntyre, Dana Orlando, Dave Pritchett, Betty Y.cSerCscs,
This was the first of a series of poetry/spoken word demonstrations aimed at recognizing the importance of poetry in the lives of everyday people. This event focuses on ~ancouver'sDowntown Eastside, an active community that has a lot to say for itself.

Rounding out the evening's presentation was a premiere of "The Dawn of the Unknown Poets", a video by G-ry Taylor, featuring poets read'ng their material in comfortable familiar surroundings and/or settings that were meaningful to the reader. cally show that all types of people, even those in Vancouver's roughest, troubled and disadvantaged neighbourhoods, write worthwhile poetry of every description. "WORD, SOUND & POWER. " : A Renaissance of Creative Passion & Cultural Activism, breaks down some cultural barriers, giving faces and voices to those who have remained too long in silence. It inspires and builds confidence in both poets and all of us, potential poets. Here, the poets bring their poetry to a new audience in an effort to overcome the elitism

crippled the potential of much . modern poetry. The Carnegie Community Centre sponsored this reading and those participating weie a cross section of the broad spectrum of personalities that make the area the Centre serves so unique. From 16-60 plus, workers and those receiving social assistance, the highlyeducated, drop-outs and the selftaught, drug-users, hustling city folk and natural people, raging activists and solid organizers and those with quiet fortitude and dignity - all people who have waited a very long time to have their voices heard. "WORD, SOUND & POWER. " is an event radiating with the vitality of a community struggling to become conscious of itself and its creative power! This publication is one more expression of that struggle.

Symbols are so beautiful. They show the spirit of what is really going on...not that anyone knows what's 'really' going on anymore. An individual expresses her or his degree of spiritual evolution by
creating..by giving life to an otherwise inanimate scene. One's personal code helps make the insane chaos of this universe a a canvas'on montage-in-motion which one's concepts of reality & infinity can be played to see patterns of continuity. On Thursday of last week, a symbol of the creative spirit of Carnegie was insensitively destroy& ed. It was a work of art, but there is no one to point the fin:I ger at; no one to say "Why?" to. It's done and only the anguish of the artist will leave any record

The doorframe into the former childminding room on the second floor - now housing the concession was - awash with colour. When the childminding was moved from the 3rd floor, there was a long debate on whether the room would serve to entertain and safely hold kids. Tora, artist and poet extraordinaire, took it upon himself to inspire the debaters about the need to have kids in any community..to understand that they are our future and how we treat them determines the kind of people they will become. Tora spent 3-4 hours a day for about a week painting a rainbow on the doorframe and the painters just rolled over it. What hurts me is that no one sensed what could occur until it was done, and now everyone can i only shake their heads and ask "Why?" This kind of insensitivity is the result of too many pebple in high places being stone cold dead. On the pyramiding levels of power the wiping out of people's history with symbolic paint is ever-present but when it happens so -i close to our heart it hurts. PAULR TAYLOR

What happened to my friend, CARE? I honestly don't know, looked everywhere Lots of questions, left with no answers Living with CARE, Life is so much easier 4 s m y friend gone forever? As I asked around always the same answer: WHO? CARE? Maybe people just don't care about CARE. Hate is what I'd find instead On every face, in many hearts too ' Living like this, might as well be dead Do look for CARE, please, hands out, reach out around you End this nonsense of hate, we're all brothers, where's the Love? By IIZENE SCHMIDT It was an interesting week sitting in the courtroom watching and listening to the provincial and federal lawyers cross-examining Chief Gisdaya (Alfred Joseph). Much of their time was spent trying to get Alfred to agree with their suggestions that the only interest he had in his territory was a financial/commercial one that was represented by his registered trapline. He took his time answering the questions - which frustrated Michael Goldie (porvincial lawyer) but Alfred maintained his cool. The media has been noticeably absent from the courtroom. Other than

first two days of evidence, there has been nothing in the papers, television or radio. Deborah Brauer, stringing for C.B.C. Prince Albert, has been the only consistent reporter covering the proceedings. More and more interest in the case is being shown by individuals and groups in and around the city of Vancouver. At times, the court room is packed with every seat filled...most timeii only the supporters of the witnesses and lawyers fill a dozen chairs. The
more we publicize it, the more people are willing to come and sit in. The Vancouver Native Education Centre, A.I.M.S. Job Development, Windsor House School in North Vancouver and Native Law students from UBC have taken time to come in and follow the hearings for a few hours. Windsor House is an elementary school and the students have been following our case since last year. They were surprised and disappointed to find that the press showed very little interest in covering the trial. The main reason the media show this lack is because they are too busy hounding members of the Child Poverty Action Committee to getthem to identify hungry children in Vancouver. ' Dsee (Madeline Alfred) was the very first witness to give her evidence in Wet'suwet'en. This means the use of an interpreter. An attempt w a s made by the Provinrn to block George Halland from interpreting Madeline's evidence. Their main reason was that George had an interest in her evidence because he was from the same House. tieorge's qualifications, professionalism and certification were noted by our lawyers and Justice McEachern ruled in our favour. Madeline has been doing very well on the stand...g iving clear descriptions of her House territory. It was pointed out by Gisdaywa (Alfred Joseph) that her evidence ds very powerful because she has lived and used resources on her territory all her life. While identifying one photo exhibit, Madeline's evidence spanned over one hundred years. And that was from her direct knowledge!
12
The province has been arguing that the testimony of the Gitksan & ~et'suwet'en witnesses is "hearsay". ~~adeline'sevidence is strong contradiction to that argument. Provincial lawyer Geoffrey Plant has had a hard time cross-examining Madeline because of his need for maps and documents to pursue his arguments. Madeline, on the other hand, retains all her knowledge in her memory(in Wet'suwet'en) without the need of maps, photos or registered documents. Plant's efforts to cross-examine Madeline has beeri described by Louise 1"- - 3 - 1 1 i l a l l u ~ a ~s ~i r y i l ~ gi 1 1 "nai i Te1i.e to the wall." Madeline has raised thirteen children so she deserves a medal. She is expected to be finished on Thursday morning. She will be followed by her son, Henry Alfred Wahtahget from the House of Wahtahget.

Urban redevelopment & the police veto When "urban redevelopment" began, as an idea in the minds of North American Architects, it was based on a humanitarian ideal - their main purpose was to bring the cduntry into the city. ..to soften the hard edges & create a livable environment with more trees & grass - less pollution, & a more organic, less frantic lifestyle for citydwellers. Over the years, this idea seems to have got twisted around to the point where "urban redevelopment" L . . ---- Come LO mean increasing ,la= I L U W density, higher rents, more commercial activity, & a securityconscious environment that adds a sort of mickeymouse sterility to everything. Somehow, it has also come to represent a "clean-up the neighbourhood" attitude that forces long-time community members to move out 6 make way for rich tourists & upwardly mobile professionals. In Vancouver it is a little-known fact that the Police Department has full veto powers over city planning 6 environmental projects. If the
Police want thin trees and no bushes - that's what we get. If they say benches and rest areas can not be covered by rain shelters because it cuts down surveillance - then people just have to sit there and get wet. If landscaping concepts restrict their security operations in any way, the police can simply reject them. . What this means is that security conscious 6 , in fact, fairly paranoid professional lawmen actually design our living environment in the city. Added to the fact that the corporate f i n a n c i a l system prcmctec overcrowding & commercialization, the Police veto makes it totally impossible for any "urban redevelopment" project to create the original organic, people-oriented communities once envisioned by architects. As a result, "urban redevelopment" has become a threat rather than a benefit to inner-city residents. The country will never come into the city now, & the original high idealism of urban redevelopment will never be realized. --.. .
