There are some great benefits to homestay accommodation, including: ⋅ spending time with a family, practising your English and getting to know the British culture ⋅ independence within a caring home environment ⋅ a comfortable study bedroom with a desk and wardrobe ⋅ breakfast and evening meals ⋅ weekly laundry (bedding and towels are provided by your homestay) ⋅ internet and telephone access ⋅ choice of a single or shared room ⋅ the opportunity to live as part of a British family or household within the area local to the college.
Getting to know your homestay
Every homestay is different, but every host is experienced in looking after international students. If you have any questions or if there’s anything you don’t understand about your homestay, we always advise students to speak directly to their homestay host. This includes questions about what happens in the holidays, having friends to stay and meals. Most families are flexible and approachable, so don’t be afraid to ask.
Location
Many of our homestays are within a 20-minute walk of the college or on a suitable bus or train route.
Our guarantee
We visit all of our homestay hosts to make sure that they are able to provide a safe and welcoming home environment for our students, and to ensure that they offer comfortable accommodation that meets our students’ needs. We encourage students to take the opportunities offered by homestay hosts to engage with life in the household, as this will enhance your experience of living and studying in Britain. Despite our detailed matching process, sometimes students do not settle well in their homestay and wish to move to another homestay, or change to another form of accommodation. We always work with students and homestay providers to resolve any issues that arise and we will move students who have not settled well as soon as possible if issues cannot be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.
Support for homestay students
The college Welfare and Safeguarding Team is always on hand to help students to settle in and to answer any questions they may have. In addition, we conduct regular student surveys to check that students are happy with their accommodation.
Younger students
Extra measures are put in place to safeguard students in homestay who are under the age of 16. Local Social Services teams will visit students under 16 in their homestay accommodation to ensure that their needs are being met and that their environment is as safe, secure and nurturing as it should be. *Please note homestay is not available in London for students under 16. All international GCSE Pathway students at Brighton must reside on campus. British law does not allow discrimination between ethnicity, origin, religion, sexuality or disability.
A homestay in London
We carefully choose all our homestay accommodation to ensure it is safe and friendly, and we make regular visits to check that students have everything they need.

Years 10 and 11 – Academic Pathway
After completing Year 9 you will have a clear understanding of academic subjects and where you want to focus your studies, and can confidently choose your GCSE Programme Pathway. For each pathway we have carefully selected subject combinations to prepare you for future university degrees within your field. You will still have plenty of choice and opportunities to study other subjects alongside your pathway. For example, you could combine the Science and Engineering pathway with a GCSE in Drama. If you join the programme in Year 10 you will need to choose your pathway straightaway. Your teachers will regularly review your progress to make sure you are on the right pathway. For students with a particularly high academic ability we offer an Oxbridge pathway, which is subject to assessment.
Our GCSE Programme Housemistress, Susan Mackenzie, provides a sympathetic ear, excellent pastoral care and ongoing support. Our lovely residential team includes an assistant houseparent, matron and other supervisors. Together they oversee care and day-to-day routines. This includes meal-time registers, ensuring you understand where you need to be at different times of the day, and what is expected of you at Bellerbys.
It’s a good place to study GCSEs because the classes are small and you can learn a lot from your teacher and the other students. Bellerbys is different to other schools - everyone is so nice and friendly. I got to know everybody in a few days and I felt at home very quickly.

Foundation
The widest choice of university progression Our Foundation Programme provides the solid preparation, skills and experience you need to progress to top UK universities. We have over 70 destination universities, giving you the widest choice of university options. By choosing our Foundation Programme rather than an on-campus option, your choice is not limited to a single university. Our partners include many of the UK’s leading universities.
Our Foundation Programme provides a tailor-made curriculum for international students. Through seminars and tutorials, specialist teachers, English language preparation, small classes and the latest technology, we offer a supportive learning environment to ensure you have the best chance of success. Specialist enrichment activities are highlights of the Foundation Programme. Visits to universities and industry workplaces, guest speakers, competitions, societies and clubs all help you to experience the subjects you study in a practical way. Other examples of enrichment activity include learning on the HSBC trading oor, a set design workshop following a Warner Brothers studio tour, and creating the components of an F1 car.

Foundation Bellerbys College Foundation Programme is accredited by Lancaster University
The Bellerbys Foundation is a highly academic, one-year programme which provides a progression route to one of over 70 UK universities. Based on the A Level syllabus and taught by A Level teachers, the Foundation programme provides a modern approach to learning that teaches skills beyond the classroom; essential preparation for university and career success. Progress to university study
Each of our 11 pathways offer unique academic content and skill building opportunities, and will lead to a wide range of university degrees in related subjects. Two new pathways, Business with Marketing and Business with Law, offer additional career-focussed learning.*
Develop crucial study skills
The Bellerbys Foundation provides the learning skills and study techniques you need to succeed at university in the UK, including giving effective presentations, essay writing, research skills and contributing to seminars.
Enrichment programme
When you successfully complete the programme to the required standard, you can progress to a degree course at one of over 70 destination universities. A key benefit to a Bellerbys Foundation is help finding the university and degree course that is right for you.
One year, intensive programme
Choice of 11 academic subject-based pathways
The Bellerbys enrichment programme provides a wide choice of fascinating activities, talks and experiences which are designed to enhance your studies, develop your subject knowledge and promote communication and life skills. These are all qualities that leading universities look for in applicants.
The Bellerbys Foundation is a streamlined and intensive three-term programme. Compared to the traditional A Level path, this programme enables you to start your degree a whole year earlier.
By participating in enrichment activities you will become fully immersed in the subject you are studying, and gain new insights and perspectives. For example, visiting Cambridge Science Park provides a whole new perspective on the theory you will learn in class, or attending a university creative arts workshop offers opportunities to learn new techniques and skills.
International university destinations
You can access a wide range of UK university destinations. We also offer opportunities to study at universities in Australia, America and Italy. This means you can choose an institution that best suits your needs and ambitions. For up-to-date information on university destinations, please visit bellerbys.com These new pathways are subject to accreditation by Lancaster University, expected in early 2015
