Welcome

Thoughts now turn to 2015 where we aim to make it bigger and better yet again, and ensure that every student and member of staff leaves with memories that will last a lifetime. We are keeping our special offer for Easter; book the first week and get the second week for half price! In the summer we continue to be Four Schools One Family and we have added some exciting new Academies. As they say, you can never have too much of a good thing, so we have added an extra week to Millfield, Millfield Junior and Wells Cathedral School. I am particularly excited though about our European Week to Paris, Venice and Rome (see page 74). We hope you enjoy our new look brochure and we look forward to welcoming students to a Millfield English Language Holiday Course in the near future. Take care

English Lessons Providing our students with a good quality learning experience is our main aim, therefore on all of our courses throughout the year, we provide English lessons in the mornings. At all of our campuses, students will have 15 hours of English Tuition per week, with trained teachers. All students attend 3 hours of English classes during the morning on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Students are tested on arrival and placed in classes after taking factors including level, age, gender and nationality into account. In order to expose the students to two different styles of teaching and two different English accents, each class is allocated two teachers. All teaching materials are provided and are included in the cost of the course. On successful completion of the course, all students will receive an academic report, general report and course certificate. Students can further improve their English by studying extra English and Exam Classes in the afternoons, see page 60 for more information. 8

Course and Vocabulary Organiser Each student will receive a Course and Vocabulary Organiser, written by Mark Greenow, which is an essential part of the academic programme and used in every lesson. It is a “thinking notebook” with sections for each part of the English learning experience. It also includes a diary, which students are encouraged to complete, a mini-dictionary and plastic wallets for storing postcards, class copies etc. making each student’s learning experience unique.

Easter 12-17 years 29th March – 12th April 2015 Millfield is proud to offer a unique Easter Course where students can attend for one week (29th March – 5th April or 5th - 12th April) or two weeks (29th March – 12th April) and experience the magic of Millfield in Somerset. Each day students have the chance to choose from a wide range of activities with a variety of sporting and non-sporting options, to test themselves in a non-professional environment with an emphasis on fun. Course also includes a full social programme, plus one full day and one half day excursion per week, including London & Oxford. OFFER – For 2015 we are offering students the opportunity to book the first week and get the second week at half price. LOCATION – Millfield School, Street, Somerset, BA16 0YD

General Information Professional Staff Apart from the full-time staff which includes the Director of Holiday Courses and Course Administrators, Millfield is fortunate to have many top quality staff who return year after year for the English Language Holiday Courses. Our staff members are specially selected for their wide range of skills and their ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages and cultures.

Arrival and Departure The Student Travel Details form/online section must be completed and returned by the date specified on the form. Students who have requested a Millfield transfer will be met at the airport by a Millfield Representative who will be wearing a red Millfield t-shirt and carrying a Millfield sign. Please be aware that sometimes there are unavoidable delays and there may be a short wait at the terminal. Every effort is made to ensure that the students are transferred as quickly as possible. Staff will accompany students back to the airport and supervise the check-in procedure. Students who wish not to use the Millfield transfer service should make their own arrival and departure arrangements and inform us of these by completing the correct section on the application form.

Pocket Money and Valuables Although everything needed is included in the price of the course, students may wish to bring pocket money to purchase souvenirs. We also occasionally offer activities in addition to the normal programme such as cinema or bowling which would require pocket money. We recommend about £50 per week and a maximum of £100 per week. Students should bring their pocket money in cash sterling. We have a cash machine facility on campus for which students can use a Debit or Preloaded Cash Card. You should ensure that the student has sufficient pocket money to cover the £30 damage deposit required on arrival at Millfield. If no damage is caused by the student, the £30 will be refunded in full to the student in cash on departure. If damage has been caused by the student, some or all of the £30 will be retained by Millfield to pay for said damage. Residential Coordinators will exchange any foreign money. Pocket money, passports and tickets will be collected from students on arrival, and be stored in a locked safe monitored by the student’s Residential Co-ordinator.

Accommodation

Health and Welfare

We have separate girls’ and boys’ accommodation, and students may only mix in recreational areas of the houses. Some of the older students may enjoy the privacy of their own single room with shared bathroom facilities (although some may have en-suite), while younger students share 2, 3 or 4-bedded rooms and bathroom facilities. The Millfield Junior Campus offers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6-bedded rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Each house has payphones to make international calls, and telephones which can receive incoming calls. Important messages can be left with the Course Administrators during office hours (09.00 – 17.00 hours UK time):

A Residential Co-ordinator is appointed to manage each house and they have responsibility for the health and welfare of all students in their house. Students who report that they are feeling unwell are initially seen by a nurse at one of the Medical Centres. The nurse assesses the student and either provides medication or advice, or advises visiting the local Doctor’s surgery. An appointment can usually be made for the same or next day. In an emergency the student is taken to the local hospital. In all cases of illness, the Residential Co-ordinator and other members of staff will check the student regularly and ensure that he/she is comfortable. Students are supervised 24 hours a day and we ensure that as many of our staff as possible are qualified in First Aid. Please ensure that the Medical Information form/online section is completed and returned.

Clothes and Laundry

School Rules

Students should bring, as far as possible, machine washable casual and sports clothes for everyday activities and variable weather conditions, and some smart clothes for special occasions. England can sometimes be wet and cold. Please ensure students have a jumper, a waterproof coat and suitable footwear. Clothes are laundered twice a week by the school. Students have to sort their own clothes when they are returned clean, so please label them clearly with the student’s name/family name. Students must bring their own bath towels. Bed linen is supplied and changed once a week.

In order to guarantee the safety and enjoyment of all students, a Code of Conduct is in place that must be followed by everyone. It is essential that everyone is aware of these rules. Millfield reserves the right to discipline and in extreme cases to expel the student at the parents’ or guardian’s expense, without the refund of fees. Please refer to the Parents’/Agents’ Manual for the Code of Conduct.

Meals All meals are provided and most are served in the dining hall on each campus. The quality of the food is very high and the schools are experienced in catering for different religious persuasions and lifestyle preferences. At breakfast we offer a choice of cooked food (i.e. sausages, egg, bacon), cereal and fruit. At lunch and supper we offer both hot food and salad. Vegetarian options are available at all meals. Packed lunches are provided on excursions and occasionally supper will be a special barbecue outside. Refreshments are provided in the afternoon break. Please specify any special dietary requirements on the Medical Information form/online section.

How to solve a problem If a student has a problem, it is important that they bring it to the attention of staff as soon as it arises. Any member of staff can be approached and will be willing to give assistance. For specific help, they can speak to the Pastoral Manager for accommodation, health and nutrition issues; the Academic Manager for any learning or teaching issues; and the Sports Manager for sport and activity issues. If the problem is not resolved satisfactorily they should contact the Centre Manager who has overall responsibility for the course. He/she can be approached directly or through other staff at any time. Official complaints should be directed to the Director of Holiday Courses and Events, Mr Mark Greenow on: T +44 (0) 1458 444 457 M + 44 (0) 7885 613 692 E markg@millfieldenterprises.com The director is available at all times on his mobile phone in case of emergencies.
