I strongly believe team sports offered by the Park District provide our children a great learning experience. Volunteering for the Park District was a way to simply spend quality time with my children participating in activities we could enjoy together. To my surprise I have received so much more in return. Being able to interact with the different families across Carol Stream, through the various sports teams I have coached, has been a source of great enjoyment for me and my family. - Bill Bonnema

Congratulations to Bill Bonnema (pictured on the top left with his grade 5-6 basketball team), recently named the Carol Stream Citizen of the Year for 2009.

Bill has dedicated hundreds of hours of service to the Park District through the youth sports programs. He has proven his leadership as a member of our basketball and baseball planning committee, a baseball league coordinator, and as a coach and manager for six different teams this year. Bill is an enthusiastic volunteer who is always willing to share ideas to improve the Park District programs not only for his family, but for all of the children in our sports programs. His assistance has helped the recreation staff develop youth sports programs that evaluate, teach and inspire players. Slepicka Homestead Park was named the Illinois Outstanding Park Award winner at the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association (IPRA) awards in January. Slepicka Park, named after the family that farmed there since the 1940’s, was opened by the Carol Stream Park District in October 2008, and was designed as an adultoriented park. Features at the park, which qualified for state grants of nearly $700,000, include exercise stations, a picnic shelter with permanent game tables, raised garden plots, bocce and baggo courts and the beginnings of a small arboretum. It also features a historic marker—a 1940’s concrete silo— which now displays farm artifacts. Arnie Biondo, executive director of the Carol Stream Park District, said: “Slepicka Park was designed with our growing population of residents over 50 in mind, and it is the first park in our district to be built with horticulture and social recreation at the core.” Slepicka Park is user-friendly to residents of all ages and abilities. It is located at Lily Lane in Carol Stream. For more park distict news, visit the park district blog or sign up for the e-newsletter at csparks.org

Reduce the cleaning chemicals in your home by making use of baking soda to clean. Baking soda is an excellent degreaser, and when mixed with white vinegar, is perfect for cleaning and deoderizing your garbage disposal.
