Parent/Tot Swim Exploration

Basic Skills III

Ages 6mo.-3yrs with Parent

Ages 5yrs+

Come and explore the water with your infant or toddler! This class, is designed to facilitate familiarity with the water and build comfort. Instructors will act as facilitators and coordinate both structured and unstructured activities to promote water exploration.

To successfully graduate from Basic Skills III, students must be able to independently swim the full length of the Splash Central Lap Pool (25 yards) using a relatively refined and clean Front Crawl and Back Crawl. Students will also receive introduction to the stroke components of Breast Stroke through development of Elementary Backstroke.

Basic Tiny Tot Ages 3-5yrs. This class focuses on development of motor skills in the water, including blowing bubbles, supported floats, and arm circles. Students will also be given structured opportunities to further explore the water environment.

Advanced Tiny Tot Ages 3-5yrs. For students successfully graduating from Basic Tiny Tot. Students will be encouraged to continue developing motor skills learned Basic Tiny Tot in addition to achieving a level of comfort where they can put their entire head under the water.

Basic Skills I Ages 5yrs+ After graduation from Advanced Tiny Tot, students will be ready to Basic Skills I. Skills include early stroke development with the refinement of arm circles, kicks, and an introduction to rotary breathing. Instructors will also encourage students to float independently on their front and back. Students will also cover safety rules at the start and end of class each day.

Basic Skills II Ages 5yrs+ Building on the curriculum from Basic Skills I, students will continue to develop front crawl and back crawl with the ultimate goal of swimming 10-15 yards independently with instructor supervision. Rotary breathing will also be reinforced in an effort to develop a clean stroke needed for successful completion of the next class, and graduation into the Advanced Skills series.

Advanced Skills I Ages 5yrs+ Students will build endurance by swimming regular lengths of the pool. Advanced safety skills will be introduced and discussed and students will be given the opportunity to attempt basic diving techniques.

Advanced Skills II Ages 5yrs+ Students will continue the development of Breast Stroke and receive an introduction to the most endurance and techniquedemanding of the four basic strokes: Butterfly. Students will continue to develop their ability to swim greater distances, which is important from both a safety and competitive standpoint. Finally, proper usage of lifejackets will be demonstrated and applied during class.

Advanced Skills III Ages 5yrs+ The final course in the Advanced Skills series focuses on retention of all four major strokes: Front Crawl (Freestyle), Back Crawl (Back Stroke), Breast Stroke, and Butterfly. Students will receive additional training on how to apply these strokes in both a leisure swimming and competitive environment. Additional endurancebuilding activities for students will help facilitate their graduation from the program as students into confident and safety-oriented independent swimmers.

Sports League FAQs

How do I register? Register on line at csparks.org or use the registration form in this guide. By registering your child you agree to comply with the Parent Code of Conduct which can be accessed on the home web page of each youth sports league and is discussed by the coach at their preseason parent meeting.

How do I register for tee ball, soccer, and high school leagues? Registration is by grade level. Players are to be registered for the grade the player is currently in. Preschoolers must be entering kindergarten for the 2013/14 school year.

How do I register for youth baseball? Registration is by age. Players are to be registered based on their age as of April 30, 2013.

How do I register for youth softball? Registration is by age. Players are to be registered based on their age as of December 31, 2012.

Can my child play up?

What happens if I register after the deadline? Players placed on a wait list are not guaranteed placement on a team. If you register before team formation the player will be moved off the wait list if there are enough to form an additional team. However, if you register after team formation, or if another team cannot be formed, placement will only be done when a team or teams are below the established maximum number of team participants. Players will not be added to any team one week prior to the first scheduled game.

Can I request for my child to be placed on a specific team? No, due to the nature of the program, we cannot accept any other coach, player, or carpool requests. However one mutual friendship request will be honored for players in an instructional league, pinto (8U) baseball, or grade 1 & 2 soccer. A park district request forms must be used for these requests and the guidelines listed on the form must be followed. These forms are available at Simkus Recreation Center and on our web site. Request deadlines are the same as registration deadlines (not early bird).

How do I volunteer to help? Volunteers are used for the following position:

Playing up is not allowed for instructional soccer or tee ball.

Coaches

For all other leagues playing up is allowed by one age or grade level but the following process must be adhered to:

League Coordinators

Planning Committees

1. The player must register at his or her age or grade. 2. A request to play up must be made to the program supervisor. 3. The player must attend the evaluation day for the sport and must attend at the time designated for the requested league/ level (i.e. if a player should be playing in the Mustang league but wants to play in the Bronco league, player must attend the Bronco player evaluation).

32

Applications are available at Simkus and on the home web page of each youth sports league. These leagues can be accessed at: www.csparks.org/index.php/sports/youthsports/

WDSRA provides a fun, safe environment for more than 4,500 children, teens, and adults to choose from over 1,500 programs, trips, and special events throughout the year. Programs everyone to participate at their own ability level. We offer a wide range of programs to reach a variety of interests, including: swim lessons, special Olympics, music, baseball, soccer, drama, art, bowling, trips, outings, social clubs, wheelchair and adapted sports and much more.

Carol Stream Park District & the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The park district will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please call (630) 784-6100. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

Inclusion Services

Two week advanced notice is required for those requesting assistance in order to participate in park district programs. Without two weeks’ notice your child may not be able to participate. Inclusion is designed to provide the least restrictive environment while providing the maximum opportunity to participate in a program. There is no charge for WDSRA’s support. If you would like assistance, please indicate that special accommodations are needed on the park district registration form. If you have questions, contact WDSRA at 630-681-0962.

WAIVER REGISTRATION/BROCHURE WAIVER & RELEASE IMPORTANT INFORMATION The Carol Stream Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Carol Stream Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the above listed programs/activities must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities/programs. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity. WARNING OF RISK Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant.
