E-cycle your electronics Got a new gadget on your holiday wishlist? Don’t junk your old electronics, take them to an electronic recycling center. Visit scarceecoed.org to find local electronic recycling centers.

(no barcode reader? download one at scanlife.com)

Transform newspapers to logs Recycle old newspapers by making rolled paper logs for your fireplace. Roll newspaper sheets into a log shape, then soak them in water. Dry the log overnight and use like ordinary wood.

Check your ducts Maximize the efficiency of your heating system by checking your ductwork for leaks. Sealing leaks with duct mastic will stop hot air escaping before it reaches your vents.

My husband and I have four active kids and at one point or another our entire family has been involved in Carol Stream Park District activities and volunteering has just always been second nature. I grew up with parents that volunteered and I look at volunteering as a part of being a parent. I volunteer at every school and sport our kids are involved in and at our church. People may think I’m a giver, but the truth is I’m the one receiving the gift by volunteering. I have made life long friends through volunteering and had a lot of fun along the way. - Annie Taschetta

Annie, a native Minnesotan, moved to the Carol Steam area over 17 years ago with her husband. Annie and her husband are business owners in Wheaton and live in Winfield with their 4 kids, ranging from 8-14 years of age. Annie has an elementary education degree and has taught kindergarten and third grade. She is currently a substitute teacher and a special education coordinator.

Annie loves watching her sons play football and baseball and her daughters compete with the Carol Stream Springers. She volunteers with the Springers Gymnastic Team by creating the team newsletter and bulletin board. She also enjoys reading, traveling and shopping. For more information about volunteering with the park district, visit csparks.org/volunteer or call (630) 784-6100

s t n e v E l a i c e p S Santa Visits Wed, Dec 15 & Thu, Dec 16

Letters to Santa Nov 29 - Dec 11 Experience the excitement of opening a personalized letter from Santa Claus! Your child can drop off a letter to Santa that we will deliver to the North Pole. Look for the special mailbox inside Simkus Recreation Center from November 29 - December 11. Please make sure that your child’s full name and address are included in the letter so that Santa knows where to send his correspondence or email him at santa@csparks.org. Don’t miss out on this special holiday tradition that is sure to put a smile on your child’s face!

Teeny Weenie New Year’s Eve Ball Thu, Dec 30 Too young to stay up until midnight? Parents and their young children can get an early start on the party at our countdown to Noon party! Games, crafts, dancing and a balloon drop are all part of the fun. New this year, a DJ! Festive snacks and a fun dessert will also be served. A parent/guardian is free but required to stay at the event.

Why wait in line at the shopping mall to sit on Santa’s lap when Santa can come see you? Surprise a child with a visit from Santa right to your house. Santa will arrive in his ‘custom’ RV and listen to your child’s holiday wish list inside the RV! Due to his heavy schedule, Santa will stay for five minutes in front of each house and will only be able to visit with immediate family members. You will need to be available 5:30 to 8:00pm so Santa finds you at home. Please register by Dec 8 as Santa has many children to visit and will need to know his schedule early! Santa visits are open only to residents of the Carol Stream Park District. Santa Visits are sponsored by Hometown RV, located right here in Carol Stream. They’ve generously agreed to donate the use of Santa’s RV. Visit them on the web at www.hometownrv. com. Registration fee is per family. The Bartlett Park District’s swim lesson program is for swimmers of all ages. On the first day of lessons parents will receive a parent manual which explains each of the levels in depth. Due to the limited amount of space on the pool deck, parents will be asked to sit in the bleachers or viewing area. For those who have already been in our swim lesson program, please sign your child up for lessons according to a previous swim lesson report card. Before registering for a swim lesson, review your child’s previous lesson history and age limitations of class. Classes fill quickly and transferring from one level to another is not always possible. If you have questions, please ask at the Registration Desk. Registration will close three days prior to the start of the class. No refunds or make-ups will be given for classes missed or forgotten. The park district reserves the right to combine class levels if deemed appropriate.

Inclusion Services

Carol Stream Park District & the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The park district will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please call (630) 784-6100. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

WDSRA also offers inclusion services for those wishing to participate in regular park district programs but may need assistance. Inclusion is designed to provide the least restrictive environment while providing the maximum opportunity to participate in a program. There is no charge for WDSRA’s support. If you would like assistance, please indicate that special accommodations are needed on the park district registration form. If you have questions, contact WDSRA at (630)-681-0962. Two-week advance notice is requested for inclusion support.

Special Recreation The benefits of recreation extend far beyond the soccer field or the dance floor. The skills that are learned and practiced in leisure provide a tremendous foundation for life. For an individual with a disability, recreational activities can improve self-confidence, provide socialization opportunities, and reinforce a sense of teamwork and tolerance. They can establish friendships and gain social independence. The benefits are endless!

Winter Sports Ice skating is permitted in Armstrong and Tedrahn parks, only when a green flag is flying and is entirely at the skater’s own risk. Armstong Park and Weeks Park West have sled hills open to the public. Ice fishing in any park district lake is strictly prohibited.

Earth Flag Awarded to Park District

The Carol Stream Park District was awarded the Earth Flag in September in recognition of its earth-friendly practices. To achieve the Earth Flag certification the park district had to pass an environmental audit by the SCARCE organization and implement several new green initiatives. These included adding over 100 new recycling bins to the parks, creating new policies to reduce paper, energy and fuel use, and increasing the number of nature and green-based activities for residents.

Room Rentals Rent a room at the Carol Stream Park District for your meetings, parties or community groups. Choose from a variety of meeting rooms for groups of 25-70 people. Call 630-784-6100 for more information.

Garden Plots Looking for a place to sow your seeds next year? Reserve your Garden Plot today for the upcoming planting season! Sixteen ground-level plots and six raised garden beds are located at Slepicka Homestead Park, 1301 Lily lane, Carol Stream. Returning gardeners have until January 31 each year to register for their plot. Remaining plots then become available for Residents starting February 1 and Non-Residents as of March 1. Call (630) 784-6100 for more information, and visit the Simkus Recreation Center to register for your plot today!
