LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Carolina Ballet Patrons — Welcome to the spring programs of Carolina Ballet’s 21st season. I am thrilled you have chosen to join us and confident you will find many moments to enjoy. If this is your first time, please let us know about your experience and we hope you will be back. To our many faithful audience members, thank you for continuing to show your passion for ballet through your attendance and financial support. As the Chairman of the Board, it is my pleasure to share with you the many exciting things happening at the Ballet. I am most proud of the work being done around the leadership transition between Robert Weiss, our Founding Artistic Director/CEO and Zalman Raffael, our Co-Artistic Director. Nothing speaks to a solid foundation more than when an organization successfully undergoes a leadership transition at the top, especially from its founder. There is excitement on the horizon and Carolina Ballet is poised to move into its new day with aplomb. In November, we proudly launched the public phase of a five-year $10 million campaign titled “Choreographing Carolina Ballet’s Future”. Through generous matching gift challenges from Judy and Steve Zelnak, we have created three pillars to the campaign. Investing in Our Artists. Investing in Our Performances. Investing in Our Community. Those pillars represent a commitment to improving the lives of our professional artists; growing our Creative Capital Fund for artistic exploration; and developing a robust Legacy Giving program, giving individuals the opportunity to forever be a part of the Carolina Ballet family. Please visit our website for more details or call our development team at 919-747-8457. The School of Carolina Ballet is something I also encourage you to explore. Opened in September 2018, the School of Carolina Ballet is educating students from 6 years to adults. The School has a faculty unmatched anywhere in our region. Our Principals, Soloists and Ballet Masters share their collective years of experience to provide the highest level of training for all students. Registration information for the spring semester is available at carolinaballet.com. There are many ways to be involved at Carolina Ballet including annual gifts, multi-year pledges, gifts-in-kind, and planned giving. If you are not currently a subscriber, please consider becoming one today to ensure you don’t miss out on any performance or event for the remainder of the season. Thank you for being here,
Moise Khayrallah Chairman, Board of Directors

LETTER FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the second half of our 21st season – I am delighted to write to you as we open our winter/spring season for 2019. We have selected these four programs as a testament of Robert (Ricky) Weiss’ tenure as Founding Artistic Director of Carolina Ballet. I hope those of you who are not already subscribers will be inspired to sign up for a subscription to see these wonderful ballets on the remainder of the season. The first program is a new ballet by Robert Weiss to music commissioned from J. Mark Scearce. These two have worked successfully together on several occasions over the past 20 years, starting in 1999 when Ricky asked Mark to create music to tie the Beethoven and Janacek Kreutzer Sonata scores together for a ballet of the Tolstoy novella. Most recently they collaborated on the full evening ballet of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The new ballet, Love in the Times of the Day, is inspired by the paintings of Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (see the Ballet Notes). Paired with this new work is Ricky’s Time Gallery which premiered in 2008, to the music of Pulitzer Prize winning composer Paul Moravec. March 7-27 we are presenting a program of works created by Jerome Robbins, for whom Ricky danced at New York City Ballet. Fancy Free, set to music of Leonard Bernstein, commemorates the 100th birthdays of these two great artists who worked together on several occasions. It is the precursor of the wonderful 1940’s Broadway play, and movie On the Town. The second ballet by Robbins, a first time for the company, is his Afternoon of a Faun to music of Claude Debussy, considered by many to be Robbins greatest ballet. To round out the program I am presenting two new works to music of Bernstein – Metaphorical Heart, to his “Piano Trio;” and A Graceful Lighthearted Sonata to a “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.” The last two programs of the season - Monet Impressions (April 11-14) and Swan Lake (May 16-19) – will be performed to live music by the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. The music for Monet Impressions is part of the “Live Music Challenge” of Steve and Judy Zelnak. (If the goal is met for the Monet program the Zelnaks will provide funding for live music for a program in the fall.) These two very diverse ballets are quintessential works of Robert Weiss. Monet Impressions, premiering in 2002 when the North Carolina Museum of Art was presenting a large Monet exhibit, was a collaboration of the Museum, Lynne Taylor-Corbett and Weiss. Lynne, Carolina Ballet’s principal guest choreographer, created Picnic on the Grass, bringing one of Monet’s family scenes to life; and The Gardens of Giverny, choreographed by Weiss, was inspired by Monet’s iconic floral paintings. And so we end with Swan Lake - Ricky thought about how he could stage a Swan Lake with the number of dancers in his company for several years. Then he discovered a lovely edition of Swan Lake by Austrian author and artist, Lisbeth Zwerger, in which the Swan princess has only eight friends. After obtaining permission to recreate her story, he choreographed his version of the classic ballet using Zwerger’s illustrations as the impetus for the scenic and costume elements of the ballet. The ballet premiered in 2005 and has remained today one of Carolina Ballet’s most successful and popular ballet in its repertoire. The ballets mentioned above were, for the most part, choreographed on dancers who are no longer with the company. Therefore it has been an exhilarating experience to watch our young new dancers take on these roles and to experience the enthusiasm they have brought to them. They demonstrate the depth of talent that we have always been so proud to have within the company. I see this as the beginning of the next chapter for Carolina Ballet. Thank you so much for being here. Zalman Raffael, Co-Artistic Director

Robert Weiss has served as Carolina Ballet’s Artistic Director / CEO since the company’s professional launch in 1997. Under his artistic and executive leadership, Carolina Ballet has become one of America’s premier professional ballet companies, and one of the nation’s finest arts organizations (The Wall Street Journal). Mr. Weiss has created over 60 new works for Carolina Ballet, including the first full-evening ballet choreographed to Handel’s Messiah, an original fulllength Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Carmen, and The Nutcracker. In addition, he has choreographed repertory pieces to Stravinsky’s Firebird, Petruschka, Symphony in C and Concerto for Two Pianos; Beethoven’s 5th Piano Concerto, Grosse Fuge, and the 9th Symphony; Bach’s Musical Offering; Grieg’s Piano Concerto; Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony; and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. He has worked with contemporary composer Paul Moravec using his Tempest Fantasy and Time Gallery to create new ballets; and he has collaborated on several short works and a full evening Macbeth with contemporary composer J. Mark Scearce. After studying ballet from the age of 8, and performing as a child with the New York City Ballet; American Ballet Theatre; the Kirov Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet (on their U.S. tours), Robert Weiss began his career as a professional dancer at the age of 17, when he joined the New York City Ballet at the request of George Balanchine. He remained with the company for 17 years, rising to the rank of principal dancer. He performed principal roles in over 40 ballets, some of which were created for him by both Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. He was also featured in Illuminations and Dim Lustre by Frederick Ashton and Antony Tudor respectively, and worked directly with these esteemed choreographers on the revival of these works for New York City Ballet. Upon retiring as a dancer, Mr. Weiss was appointed Artistic Director of Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia. There he precipitated a period of great artistic growth for that company and a complementary growth in revenue and audiences, both of which more than tripled during his nine seasons. Mr. Weiss has also created works for American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Maurice Bejart’s Ballet of the 20th Century, The Caramoor Festival, the Palm Beach Festival, Stars of American Ballet, and Philadanco Dance Company. In January 2012, Weiss directed and choreographed the opera Les Enfants Terribles to music of Philip Glass for the North Carolina Opera. Mr. Weiss is a recipient of two fellowships for choreography from the National Endowment for the Arts. In May 2005 Robert Weiss received the Medal of Arts from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, and in fall 2009 he was honored by the Phi Beta Kappa Society of North Carolina. In May 2011, Mr. Weiss received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts Degree from North Carolina State University. He is married to Melissa Podcasy, the company’s founding principal ballerina, now a Ballet Master with the company.

She later joined the Zurich Ballet in Switzerland, where she danced principal roles (many with Rudolf Nureyev) in works by all of the major choreographers, including Myrtha in Heinz Spoerli’s Giselle. While there, she toured throughout Europe. After her return to the United States, she joined Pennsylvania Ballet as a principal dancer under Artistic Director Robert Weiss and danced roles in Swan Lake, Coppélia, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Giselle, and La Sylphide.

J. MARK SCEARCE
The 2018/19 season marks the 20th anniversary of Carolina Ballet’s close association with Raleigh-based composer J. Mark Scearce. All told, his music has graced Carolina Ballet stages in eight ballets, amounting to more than six hours of his original music, many of whose tunes we’re humming years later. His 1999 Kreutzer Sonata married Beethoven and Janacek with his own original music. A decade later Guernica and the Reverdy Song of the Dead centered the Picasso show. In the interim, his Endymion’s Sleep touched our hearts. The following year Dracula and Masque of the Red Death opened to rave reviews and two revivals. Five years on, Macbeth with an unforgettable powerhouse score moved audiences both in Memorial and DPAC. And now, back from Prague, Scearce shares his Mucha-inspired Valentine’s Day premiere this season along with Dracula and Masque revivals. J. Mark Scearce, is one of North Carolina’s most recognized and performed composers. Recipient of the 2010 Raleigh Medal of Arts and the 2009 International Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in Music Composition, Scearce is the recipient of five academic degrees in music, philosophy and religion, including a doctorate from Indiana University. Scearce has won six international music competitions and his music found on seven commercial recordings. Having taught on the music faculties of the Universities of Hawaii, North Texas, and Southern Maine, he is formerly Director of the Music Department at North Carolina State University and presently a tenured professor in NC State’s College of Design. Dr. Scearce composes on a Bechstein A175 grand piano purchased from Ruggero Piano, proud sponsor of Carolina Ballet.

COMPOSER NOTES LOVE IN THE TIMES OF THE DAY These four Times of Day by Czech artist Alphonse Mucha were created at the turn of the 20th century while the artist lived and worked in Paris. This period of Belle Époque (Beautiful Era) was a time of peace and prosperity between wars, and one of great technological and cultural innovation. Out of this era came many art movements but none so associated with it as Art Nouveau with its many practitioners: William Morris, the Arts and Crafts movement, the Viennese Secession, and Tiffany in America. As well, of course, as Mucha. Curvilinear forms, parabolas and hyperbolas, syncopation and asymmetry were found in Art Nouveau architecture, painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. This was a reaction to academic art; accessibility was its aim. Salons were the rage, and nature, especially the stems and blooms of plants and flowers, was its epitome. The “whiplash” became an important design element of this time: “sudden violent curves generated by the crack of a whip” (Pan magazine describing an 1892 sculpture by Obrist) “created dynamic, undulating, and flowing lines in syncopated rhythm.” As for my music, I’ve incorporated all of it: Paris of the time, fluctuating forms, violent curves, undulations, and syncopations—virtuosic simplicity in the hands of William “Whiplash” Wolfram. The four movements of what I call The Hours— Dawn has a Bach-like toccata frame on a Debussy impressionistic center. Noon has effervescent bookends surrounding complex chordal harmonies reminiscent of American jazz pianist Bill Evans. Evening is three dances in one movement: a Mad Men bossa nova, a highly romantic classical pas, and a crazy ragtime—a dance current with Mucha’s time in Paris and which I like to imagine he might have heard in the raucous Moulin Rouge of its day: Its cardinal trait, its syncopated or "ragged" rhythm. Night, like it’s earlier sisters, has a frame of glittering night sky, again modeled after Debussy—here his First Arabesque: an ornamental design of intertwined flowing lines, originally found in Moorish decoration. The center of this finale features dances for the principals as a music box theme and variations evoking those twinkling stars.
TIME GALLERY The Time Gallery is a musical meditation on the nature of time and the experience of temporal duration. The title derives from an eponymous exhibit of timekeeping devices I visited in 1992 at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, through which passes the planet’s Prime Meridian. 44
I. Bells encompasses a waking day as measured at medieval Benedictine monasteries. Before the development of mechanical clocks in Western civilization, bells served as the principal means to signal subdivisions of the day. The Benedictine monks who codified their subdivisions of the waking day into eight parts (Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline) were among the first and most influential bell-markers in our civilization. The movement begins in pre-dawn darkness as the percussionist is awakened by a water-alarm-clock. He goes to the chimes and sounds to begin the monastic day, a ritual immortalized in the familiar children’s song Frere Jacques. The other performers quietly enter to begin a contemplative discourse, which then yields to the succeeding hours and activities of the day. Bells is not exclusively contemplative or prayer-like in character, as evidenced in the rather active, extroverted “mid-day.” For the monastic, every activity can be an appropriate form of devotion, and I like to think that this spirit can involve all individuals, including artists, working in the service of an ideal. II. Time Machine is a dream-like tour of the development of clocks and clockthought from the Renaissance to the present. If Bells is organic and pliant, suggesting the elastic, uneven Benedictine canonical hours, Time Machine is mechanical and metronomic in its suggestion standard, inflexible hours. The second section of this movement, Pendulum, may suggest the swaying gravitational motion which revolutionized time-keeping when applied by Galileo to time mechanisms. The vibraphone’s repeating four-chord theme is based on the familiar B.A.C.H. motive (B flat, A, C, B natural), introducing the spirit of J.S. Bach (born 1685) into the musical/temporal fabric. The third section, A Clockwork Universe, may suggest the incomparably influential Newtonian model of a rational, ordered cosmos designed by The Great Watch-maker. The post-Newtonian Rhythm of Disintegration explosively disrupts the clockwork universe, subsequently winding—or melting—down into the entropic disorder, which ends the movement. III. Pulse: The Feeling of What Happens is initiated by the sound of an actual heartbeat, our natural physical time-keeping device. The rhythms of breathing also determine the structure of the piece, especially in the wind instruments. Against metronomic clock-time, Pulse sets up as asymmetrical heart beat that appears at times in the steady, regular pulse, and at times in radical, playful digressions. IV. Overtime: Memory Sings unfolds in a meta-temporal imagination of an ideal mind remembering the previous movements, reinventing the past. The word “overtime” has for me several connotations: 1) an epilogue commenting on the rest of the composition, 2) musical events unfolding over time, and 3) Mnemosyne transcending time, operating over and above it. The principal themes of the piece return, notably the B.A.C.H. motive, for as Bach is described by one commentator, “He is the spectator of all musical time and existence, to whom it is not of the smallest importance whether a thing be old or new, so long as it is true.”

An HomAge to HAndel Sunday, February 17th at 3pm St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
Recognized today primarily for his Water Music and Hallelujah Chorus, George Frideric Handel was one of the most versatile composers to ever live. With a combination of vocal and instrumental compositions, this concert is dedicated entirely to the works of this highly underrated baroque composer.
A ProgrAm of Pure deligHts Sunday, March 24th at 3pm Carolina Theatre of Durham
Returning to the Carolina Theatre for a third time, clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein performs one of the greatest concertos ever written. Paired with a scintillating Rossini overture and Brahms’ emotionally charged 2nd Serenade, this program is The COT’s annual Horst and Ruth Mary Meyer Memorial Concert.
mAsks And fAirytAles Sunday, May 5th at 3pm Carolina Theatre of Durham
Closing out the season is an extremely eclectic program featuring the Concert Singers of Cary, joining The COT for Debussy’s La demoiselle élue (The Blessed Damsel) and Mendelssohn’s ravishing Psalm 42. Giving the program its name is the charming Masques et bergamasques by Fauré, and concluding it all is Stravinky’s The Fairy’s Kiss.
