“Having a baby means you’re going to have additional expenses that you didn’t have before,” says Nathan Farrior, a program manager with Durham Regional Financial Center. Preparing a budget during pregnancy gives you a chance to adjust for those added costs, and allows you to track and plan your expenses so you aren’t hit with too many surprises after baby arrives. Creeden suggests pricing one-time and ongoing expenses related to the birth of your baby. This will help you determine if your dream nursery matches what you can really afford, if all new clothes are truly necessary and whether the cost of formula is going to affect your decision to bottle- or breastfeed. Once you have a ballpark figure in mind for what your baby’s first year might cost, allow for some extra. There are always surprises.
To help you track specific known expenses and find out what your baby’s first year might cost, BabyCenter offers an online calculator at babycenter.com/babycost-calculator. Determining as many of those costs as possible and how they fit in your budget should guide many of the decisions you make as new parents.
Decide About Working
Having a budget also helps expecting parents determine whether one spouse will be able to stay at home with the baby or cut back on work, if that’s what both parents want. Full-time daycare costs an average of $1,000 per month. Daniel Corley, a financial advisor from Chapel Hill, suggests that expectant parents weigh the pros and cons of that extra expense. Holly Nicholson, a certified financial planner from Raleigh, advises trying to live off one salary and “banking the other one” before baby arrives. This helps couples determine whether they can afford to have one parent stay home with the new baby and if any budgeting adjustments are necessary.

Save More, Spend Less Living off one salary during pregnancy is also a great way to jumpstart the savings habit. If expectant parents haven’t already started saving a little money each month for emergencies, now is the time to do it. Corley recommends putting away at least three to six months of expenses. While this is the general rule for everyone, he continued on page 8

advises aiming for the higher amount in preparation for maternity leave. Retirement may be the furthest thought from many expecting parents’ minds during pregnancy, but saving for it should be a top priority. Nicholson advises putting at least 10 percent of your income into a 401(k) plan and/or a Roth IRA. If you can’t afford to do that, Corley advises setting a 10 percent savings goal for your baby’s first year. That should translate into 7-8 percent going toward retirement initially and 2-3 percent going toward education savings, such as a 529 plan. Once you establish that base, Corley advises adding 2 percent a year toward these goals over the next 10 years. In addition to saving money during pregnancy, living off one salary makes it possible to pay down credit card debt and other large, high-interest debts. Corley says you should have “zero credit card debt when the child arrives� because it’s a mistake to think you’re going to “get rid of it easily once the child gets here.�
Evaluate Insurance and Employee Benefits Evaluating employee benefits is a crucial step during pregnancy. Creeden suggests starting with your health insurance and finding out how your plan covers delivery costs and adding a child to your policy. The next step is to figure out how much life insurance you have through work. Creeden warns that many people think they have plenty just because they have a policy through their employer, but are surprised when they find out how much it’s really worth. He cautions against taking someone else’s “guesstimate� for how much life insurance you need because every family’s needs are different. Know your regular expenses, future planned expenses and your family’s goals. Those numbers should dictate how much life insurance you need. Child care and health flexible spending accounts provide another way to save money because they allow you to pay for health care expenses with pre-tax dollars. Child care FSAs allow you to pay for daycare expenses with up to $5,000 pre-tax. Up until now, there wasn’t an official limit on how much you could contribute to a health FSA; however, as part of the Affordable Care Act signed by President Obama, FSAs now incur annual limits of $2,500 (as of Jan. 1, 2013). This limit is per individual, so each working spouse can elect to set aside up to $2,500. Going forward, that limit could rise

Make a Will Naturally, pregnancy is not a time when you want to think about “what if,” but it’s a must. “This is the time to write a will and designate a guardian” if something should happen to you or your spouse, Nicholson says. As soon as your baby is born, finalize everything and be done with it — at least until the next baby comes along. Financial planning may seem like the most “un-exciting” thing you can do during pregnancy, but as Creeden says, you don’t want to wait until you’re in the wonderful “tornado of parenthood” before realizing what you need to do. Fun ways to document your baby’s first year

aby’s first year is filled with milestones and memories — the first smile, the first tooth — maybe even the first steps or words. As parents, we want to document as much as we can because we know how quickly these special moments pass. Documenting these memorable times is often easier said than done. Ways parents can capture the quickly changing early months and years of a child’s life is to “take lots of pictures, save their memorabilia, and keep a little calendar or journal of all the things that they are feeling or experiencing,” suggests Judy Gallagher, a Creative Memories scrapbooking consultant in Raleigh. Feel like a tall order? Fortunately, with the help of local services, creative products and online resources, documenting baby’s first year can be easier and more fun and individualized than standard fill-in-theblank baby books might lead you to believe. Whether you’re a tech-savvy parent with digital design chops or a hands-on crafter with creativity to spare, there’s a method to suit your style and help you skillfully document that precious first year.
Picture It A year in photos — Babies change in
the blink of an eye, and there’s no easier way to see that than through photos. “Photographs are a moment in time captured forever,” says Nicole Rogers, a family and baby photographer and mother of one. “We can look back at them and remember what our children looked like at 6 months old, how they used to fit inside a basket or a chair.” To capture the changes, take a photo of your baby once a month (or once a week if you’re feeling ambitious) in the same colored outfit and in the same location, and by the end of the year, you’ll have a visual reminder of how much your child has grown.
Make custom cards to place beside your baby in each photo to note the specific months, weeks or milestones. If you’re tech-savvy, skip the cards and layer text over the photos using Photoshop or another photo-editing program. Online retailers also offer customized monthly bodysuits in corresponding sizes. Customized calendar — Use photos taken from each of your baby’s first 12 months to create a calendar for the next year. To make a calendar by hand, start with a plain spiral monthly calendar, then cut out and glue photos to the pages above each of the corresponding months. To design the calendar digitally, Apple users can use iPhoto to select a group of photos and create a personalized calendar.
Expert Tips for Photographing Babies Nicole Rogers, a mother and photographer, offers advice for capturing baby’s biggest milestone moments.
• Begin before baby arrives. “A baby bump is so beautiful and a wonderful and exciting time for first-time parents,” Rogers says, adding that maternity sessions are ideal during the third trimester between 29-35 weeks.
• Mark the important milestones. Rogers recommends having your newborn photographed within his or her first 10 days. “They change so much each and every day,” she says, “so it’s important to capture their first days of life.” From there, Rogers advises photographing baby when she sits up on her own for the first time, when she begins crawling and again at age 1.
• Get on baby’s level. Keep in mind the age and attention span of your photo subject. “Talk about things that interest them,” Rogers says. “Make them feel comfortable and allow them to be themselves, play and imagine.”
• Think about scale. Photographing your baby in the same outfit or on the same piece of furniture over a period of time gives a clear visual for growth. “I became a mom this year, and one of the first images I have of (my son) is of him laying on this chair,” Rogers says. “He looked so tiny. He will be 10 months tomorrow, and I plan on having him photographed on that same chair to show scale — and how much my chunky monkey has changed.”

A Worthy Investment or Budget Buster? By Elizabeth Oliver
hen it comes to organic and natural products, the choices can be dizzying, whether you’re standing in the baby food aisle or in front of a wall of diapers. To make the selection process harder, these products often cost more than their conventional counterparts — up to twice as much for baby food and five times as much for crib mattresses. How can you determine which organic and natural products are worth the extra money? Here are some pointers from local dieticians and organic experts.
You Are What You Eat Pregnant women and young children are in a league of their own when it comes to possible risks associated with food. “Whenever you’re talking about people in rapid growth, that’s when risks are the greatest,” says Suzanne Havala Hobbs, a registered dietician and clinical associate professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. “With conventional foods of any kind, unless organically grown, they are likely to contain some pesticide residue or other contaminant.” Though toxic levels from conventional foods are below limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency, Hobbs says there is little research available that shows the long-term health effects of such low-level exposure. However, a 2011 study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Public Health, found that prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides is related to lower IQ scores at age 7. Also, using data collected from nearly 1,140 children participating in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Canadian researchers found that children with substantially higher levels of a breakdown product of neurotoxic organophosphate pesticides were twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. In some cases, baby food has tested
positive for pesticide residue. To avoid the risk of pesticides in conventional baby food and paying higher prices — up to 50 percent more — for organic options, consider making your own. Apex mother of three Su Stone uses “The Dirty Dozen” list published by the Environmental Working Group to determine what baby foods to make, which
prioritizes produce by levels of pesticide residue. “It would be way too expensive to do everything yourself,” she says. Another cost-saving option is buying produce at farmers markets. “Talk to your local farmer, and even if their food isn’t organic, they can tell you how it was grown,” Hobbs says. Milk, eggs and meat also follow strict organic guidelines. Some farmers will use organic methods but without undertaking the expense of certification. If you’re considering organic formula, research it carefully, as it may contain nonorganic additives. The nutritional value of organic vs. conventional food is also up for debate. WHAT IS ORGANIC? For something to be labeled organic, it must follow standards set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Crops certified organic are produced without using synthetic fertilizers, prohibited pesticides, sewage sludge, irradiation or genetic engineering. Organically certified livestock was given access to the outdoors, received 100 percent organic feed, was produced in conditions that met animal health and welfare standards, and were absent of growth hormones or antibiotics. Organic products must also be produced using methods that contribute to protecting the environment.
The Dirty Dozen The Environmental Working Group issues the “Dirty Dozen,” as well as a “Clean Fifteen” list, to help shoppers decide when it’s best to buy organic produce. These rankings are based on results from government testing for pesticide residue on produce as it is commonly eaten, such as after being
