W
hen Wachovia Bank President Robert Hanes and Greensboro contractor Romeo Guest brainstormed ways to attract modern industries to North Carolina in the mid-1950s, they shared the same goal: to prevent “brain-draining” the area of graduates from Duke University, N.C. State University and UNC-Chapel Hill. It didn’t take long for their movement to take flight. By 1959, a private research park situated between Raleigh and Durham that would come to be known as Research Triangle Park accommodated five companies. RTP’s growth over the past 56 years to nearly 200 companies has paralleled the Triangle’s population boom — from 78,000 in Durham and 94,000 in Raleigh in 1960, to nearly 246,000 in
Durham and 432,000 in Raleigh today. In August 2014, Wake County’s population hit the 1-million mark. It’s easy to understand why. A 2014 WalletHub analysis of the 150 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. ranked Raleigh No. 2 and Durham No. 3 on WalletHub’s 2014 list of “The Most Educated Cities.” Forbes contributor David Kroll concurred, writing in 2014 that “With the weather allowing near-year-round golfing, one will still hear the lifestyle descriptor, ‘Tees, trees, and PhDs.’” Clearly, some of the most educated Americans are staying in — and relocating to — the Triangle. Consequently, each community’s population contributes to a uniquely individual and attractive lifestyle. Here are more facts about the towns and cities Triangle residents call home. carolinaparent.com |

❱ EXPERIENCE THE TRIANGLE
Triangle Treasures Explore some of the region’s most unique places BY ODILE FREDERICKS
G
et a flavor for the Triangle’s diversity by visiting some of its unique places, which reflect the residents’ tastes and interests — from art to research to conservation. Satisfy your sweet tooth the way Triangle residents have done for 75-plus years with a visit to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. You can always pick up a dozen in most area supermarkets, but nothing beats watching — and smelling — Krispy Kreme Original Glazed donuts roll out of the oven at the stores in downtown Raleigh (549 N. Person St.) and downtown Durham (3536 Hillsborough St.). Learn more at krispykreme.com. Chug back into the past by catching a train at the New Hope Valley Railway in Bonsal, 30 minutes southwest of downtown Raleigh. Travel through woods and over a trestle during a one-hour round-trip ride, rolling across track that once transported timber, cotton, corn and tobacco statewide. Visitors can learn about railroad history and visit the outdoor North Carolina Railroad Museum. Visit triangletrain.com/about for more information. Learn about conservation at the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, home to the world’s largest and most diverse collection of lemurs outside of Madagascar, where their habitat is being destroyed or overtaken by humans. Lemurs are the most endangered mammals on the planet, but the center is working to change that trajectory. Although its focus is research and biological conservation, the center welcomes visitors year-round for guided tours to observe 10 species of these creatures. Learn more at lemur.duke.edu/visit/tours. Bayer CropScience’s North American Bee Care Center, which opened last year in Research Triangle Park, is a hub for cutting-edge research on honeybees. The $3.4 million facility brings together entomologists, apiarists, graduate researchers and other experts to improve bee health while offering tours to anyone interested in learning about bees up close in a safe environment.

1 The tour features interactive stations, videos and a honey-tasting bar. A high point — except during the winter — is watching a beekeeper find a queen bee and locate honey. Sign up for tours at bayercropscience.us/our-commitment/bee-health/bee-tour. Head to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the largest museum of its kind in the Southeast, for four floors of interactive exhibits and live animals in downtown Raleigh. The museum’s newest wing, the Nature Research Center, features labs where scientists conduct research while visitors watch through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Visitors can hear from scientists about topics ranging from bugs and snakes to celestial bodies. The center’s SECU Daily Planet multimedia space presents live programming and breaking science news on a 40-by-40-foot, high-definition screen. Learn more at naturalsciences.org. Sarah P. Duke Gardens, a 55-acre complex of public botanical gardens that first opened in April 1939, blooms beautifully for all to see on the campus of Duke University in Durham, The early gardens are considered the greatest work of Ellen Biddle Shipman, a pioneer in American landscape design. style terraces of the “Historic Gardens” have since been joined by the H.L. Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, the W.L. Culberson Asiatic Arboretum and the Doris Duke Center Gardens. Step onto the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham to see the fruits of the New South rising from the old. Where abandoned tobacco warehouses once stood decaying, crowds now flock to shops, restaurants and live entertainment. While the complex retains its historic Lucky Strike tower, elements such as rushing channels of water and beautiful landscaping give it new life and sounds. Catch a free outdoor concert during summer or pass through on your way to the nearby Durham Performing Arts Center or Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Visit the North Carolina Museum of Art Park in Raleigh to see a landscape of unusual outdoor art while getting a workout by bike or on foot. The park features unusual works — some of colossal size, others that invite play. From gigantic legs lying on the ground to monumental ring sculptures to a shelter that takes pictures of the sky on its floor, the art reflects the work of creative minds. Learning Rx Meet Deanna. Three months ago she had a good brain. Today (and for the rest of her life) she’ll have an even better one.
Deanna’s parents say...
“Choosing to put Deanna through LearningRx has been the best decision we’ve ever made for her. It has impacted her more than all the time and all resources we’ve spent on sports, dance, music, and braces combined. And it will last a lifetime!” “I can remember things that are said to me the first time.”
Deanna says...

❱ EDUCATION
Top Field Trip Destinations of the Triangle BY ODILE FREDERICKS “We’re going on a field trip!” For students, that rallying cry can lead to a life-changing, eye-opening experience. The Triangle’s hands-on museums, natural beauty, history and family-friendly lifestyle offer a wide variety of field trips for every age group and interest.
Spaced Out
How heavy is the air around us? What tools do scientists use to study and predict earthquakes? Where in the universe does time stand still? Curious kids can find intriguing answers to these questions and others at the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill. Most visits begin with a traditional live-narration star show or full-dome planetarium show, such as “Magic Tree House Space Mission,” that provides a peek into the most distant edges of the universe. Schoolchildren become part of the show when they enter the “Science Stage,” where they volunteer to help conduct live science experiments and demonstrations. Two interactive exhibits, “Gross Labs” and “Water in Our World,” provide a behind-the-scenes look at science research and a chance to inspire interest in science careers. Planetarium programs align with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Essential Standards. Learn more at moreheadplanetarium.org/visit/ field-trip-planning-guide.
Super Science
With two stories of indoor, hands-on exhibits and an 84-acre outdoor campus, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham provides varied interactive experiences. Popular activities for visiting school groups include designing flying structures in “Launch Lab,” exploring the “Magic
Wings Butterfly House,” digging for fossils on the “Dinosaur Trail” and exploring cloud formations at “Into the Mist.” Many exhibits align with NCDPI’s Essential Standards for science. In addition to self-guided field trips, teachers can choose to add a hands-on program with the museum’s education team to their visit. Programs for pre-K through eighth grade come in three lengths and some, such as animal encounters, can be customized. Admission discounts are available for groups. Learn more at lifeandscience.org/field-trips. Prairie Ridge Ecostation, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ field station in west Raleigh, offers visitors the chance to learn about sustainable living while experiencing the natural world. Field trips for K-12 students are offered entirely outdoors. The site features 45 acres of reconstructed prairie, lowland forest and wetlands, with hiking trails throughout. Programs like “Cycles of Life,” “Animal Adaptations” and “Human Impacts on Aquatic Systems” are correlated to the state curriculum. A Nature Playspace — open during the center’s business hours — is designed for children ages 7 and younger. Learn more at naturalsciences.org/prairie-ridgeecostation and in the Educator’s Guide at files.naturalsciences.org/ education/edguide/Ed_guide_ part4_PR.pdf.
Historic Remnants
Head to Historic Yates Mill County Park to tour a circa-1756 operable grain mill, where the air is scented with North Carolina’s agrarian past. Trained docents and members of the education staff lead groups through the historic site. The park is a 174acre nature refuge, where trained naturalists serve as guides. Tour the Yates Family’s original mill equipment, which they operated until the mid-1950s. Visit the park center’s exhibit hall for interactive displays, a group scavenger hunt and a historic dress-up area. Learn more at wakegov.com/parks/ yatesmill/Pages/groupprograms. aspx. Take students back in time at various historic sites such as the Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham, where Confederate and Union generals met to sign surrender papers for the Southern armies in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. Learn about North Carolina’s largest antebellum plantation at Historic Stagville in Durham. Visit the 1769 plantation manor of Revolutionary patriot Joel Lane and the Old State Capitol in downtown Raleigh, and walk through Mordecai
North Carolina Museum of Life and Science Photo courtesy of Bill Russ - VisitNC.com
Historic Park to see the oldest house in Raleigh on its original location, as well as the log cabin where President Andrew Johnson was born. Learn more at carolinaparent.com/articlemain. php?take-a-history-tour-of-thetriangle-4109. Don’t overlook field trips to local businesses and companies. Ursula Vogt, a mom from Hickory, North Carolina, says such trips have allowed her son to switch cameras during a news program at a local TV station, see industrial robotics in action and even milk a cow. “Wherever their imagination takes them is where you go!” she says.
