GYE Airport

// Project Definition - Guayaquil, Ecuador

Status:

Ongoing

Client:

Airport Authority of Guayaquil

Cost:

N/A

Area:

120,000 m2 (Terminal)

Role:

Terminal Planner

Project Overview: Aviation demand in the Guayaquil Region is currently served by Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport, until the opening of the New Guayaquil International Airport, planned for 2024. The Airport Authority of Guayaquil has determined that the existing airport will not be able to meet Guayaquil’s long-term aviation needs. The terminal capacity of 7 million passengers is projected to be reached in the mid-term; and even if the terminal is expanded, the single runway and confined airfield would eventually limit growth. The Authority’s vision is to develop a first class, high capacity airport system for the region that is responds to existing and future demands for passengers and air-cargo operations, and provides a multi-modal gateway, logistics cargo service center that fosters commercial trade, and serves as a catalyst for Countrywide economic development. Responsibilities: As Team Leader of the Terminal Planning group, my role includes terminal architectural programming, pre-conceptual design of the terminal, and aircraft parking. I also assisted the Senior Master Planner calculate architectural requirements and run gate models. For more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAC1sBeZRk8

// Strategic Capacity Improvement - Brazil

Status:

Ongoing

Client:

FCMF/ ITA; USTDA (funder)

Cost:

N/A

Area:

N/A

Role:

P. Manager/Terminal Planner

Project Overview: The objective of the project is to present methodologies for calculating terminal and apron capacity at Brazilian airports, in addition to calculating capacity using the agreed upon methodology at three (3) airports: (1) Santos Dumont, (2) Salvador, and (3) Porto Alegre. We applied simulation and spreadsheet modeling to assess and quantify the impact of implementing initiatives and modifications recommended in earlier phases of the project. Baseline models of each of the agreed upon functional areas were developed using CAST™ and Excel (proprietary model developed exclusively for this project). Using the assumptions collected from site surveys, the models were calibrated to match actual conditions. Conceptual sketches were developed to illustrate the extent of each problem area and impact of each alternative. Examples of alternatives include: additional facilities, queue layout modifications, operational protocols (i.e., gate assignments, ticket counter allocation). The concepts sketches were evaluated against a series of scoring criteria and narrowed down to one preferred concept per airport. The selected airports were chosen as case studies for small, medium and large hubs, and the methodology developed for this project is being implemented by aviation authorities throughout the entirety of the Brazilian airport network. Responsibilities: As both Project Manager and Terminal Planner, my role includes developing alternatives, simulation modelling (CAST), and general project management responsibilities.

Halcyon Hotel

// Luxury Hospitality - Limassol, Cyprus

Status:

Construction (open 2018)

Client:

Stademos Hotels PLC

Cost:

N/A

Area:

240 keys // 22 residential units

Role:

Architectural Designer

Project Overview: Halcyon Hotel and Residences is a 240 key hotel and residential tower located on the Mediterranean sea East of Limassol, Cyprus. Set upon a beachfront parcel outside the resort town of Limassol on the south coast of Cyprus, this hotel offers spectacular 180-degree views of the Mediterranean Sea. In direct contrast to the buildings’ stark outlines, natural, locally-sourced materials, such as local gavro stone, copper and white plaster, provide a direct reference to regional architecture and culture. On this arid island, a sustainable approach to design and construction was paramount – locally-sourced materials, passive cooling, solar and wind power, and gray-water use all contribute to the sustainable design. The five-star hotel will include a destination spa with private pool, infinity-edge formal pools, a signature destination restaurant, and conference center with outdoor event facilities. When complete, Halcyon will be the most luxurious hotel in the area. Responsibilities: As designer at SB Architects, my role included all aspects of the architectural design of the project, from initial conceptual sketches to complete design development. Transbay9

// BMR Housing Units - San Francisco, USA

Status:

Design Development

Client:

Bridge/Essex Housing

Cost:

N/A

Area:

100,000+ sq. ft.

Role:

Designer

Project Overview: After the 1906 earthquake and fire, Rincon Hill transformed into a mixed-industrial and transit hub. Interstate 480 and its connection to the 101 overshadowed Block 9, further distancing it from its character as a residential, mixed-use neighborhood. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake set in motion the next transformation of Block 9 with the removal of the freeways. The Transbay Block 9 project will reconnect downtown neighborhoods of the city of San Francisco that have been divided for over half a century, and connect the city to the region and eventually, to the rest of the state with the new intrastate rail line. The goal of this project is to weave Block 9 seamlessly into the fabric of the city, and create a vibrant, mixed-use residential neighborhood. Fougeron Architecture is designing the podium part of the project, and its partner, SOM, is responsible for the tower. The Transbay Block 9 podium alone, will add more than 100 below-market rate housing units to a saturated market, which rarely provides quality housing opportunities to disadvatged groups. Responsibilities: As intermediate designer at Fougeron Architecture, my role includes all aspects of design of the podium part of the project, and coordination with our partner, SOM. Recomeçar

// Creche Recomeçar - Niterói, Brazil

Status:

On-Hold

Client:

Enel Cuore Onlus

Cost:

$ 138,000 USD

Area:

341 m2 + landscaping

Role:

Project Coordinator

Project Overview: The Recomeçar school is the only existing daycare in the marginalized Ititioca neighborhood of Niterói. It is adjacent to an informal settlement which was largely destroyed by devastating landslides that killed over 200 people in 2010. The school allows the women of the area to find work, in particular those that that became the primary providers for their families after the disaster. The centre quickly became a hub for the entire local community; doubling as a facility for English, capoeira and literacy classes for adults. Currently the extremely poor quality of the existing structures (overcrowding and lack natural light and ventilation) means that the buildings fail to meet local building codes. The school must relocate to a new building before the end of 2013 or risk loss of funding and closure. This project aims to build a new school/daycare center that exceeds the Department of Education’s criteria and provides its infant and adult students with a healthy and uplifting learning environment. Construction scheduled to end April 2014. Responsibilities: Grant application, architectural programming, conceptual design, staffing local team, contracts, project budget, project schedule, design reviews, team management, payments, reporting and general project coordination. Cost:

$ 75,000 USD

Area:

110 m2 + 2,230 m2 (park)

Role:

Designer

Project Overview: In January 2011, 144 mm of rain fell in Petrópolis. The rains led to landslides destroying an estimated 3,000 houses, displacing 100,000 Brazilians and causing over 900 deaths. The precipitation in those 24 hours surpassed the monthly average and resulted in the worst natural disaster in Brazilian history. Following the disaster, Nike committed funding in support of a sports center in the region. The facility will ensure space is protected for public meeting and creative play. Considering the exquisite location of the site and the programmatic needs of the community, the concept was to create a simple, low-cost building that instead of competing with its surroundings, would frame it. For the outdoor areas, the idea was to design a contemporary park, using as many natural materials as possible. Program includes sand and clay courts, playground, open-air fitness center, connections to adjacent natural areas, picnic areas, table games and a center with indoor and outdoor sheltered meeting space, restrooms, storage for sports equipment and a snack bar/ kitchen; Project is on-hold due to land tenure issues.Local partner ‘Instituto da Criança’ and Nike are currently looking for a new site to host the sports and recreation area. ‘Cobogó’ Brick // 3D Printing Endeavor

Cobogó is the name of the hollow elements, originally made of concrete or ceramic, largely used in brazilian modern architecture. While looking for references to fabricate a 3D printed brick, it was natural to end up looking for elements that were already used in architecture. The hollow sections found in cobogós were perfect to spare material without compromising the stability of the structure. The project consisted in creating a wall of 3D printed bricks, each brick representing a person. Major failure of 2011. The wall collapsed.

The Concept: Increasing green areas in urban environments is not only about constructing more square meters of green public spaces, but about [re]activating the existing ones and, more importantly, promoting the possibility of different uses [scenarios] for the same space. Transforming mono-functional into hybrid, so the expansion happens not only in space but also in time. Considering that Barcelona lacks green urban spaces, the existing highway and train station were transformed into new parks, and connected to the existing ones. After choosing the points of interest, a triangulated mesh was generated as an infrastructure. Origami-like strategies were applied to generate permanent and temporary spaces, that reacted to real-time data. The technology available today already allows us to detect data and promote interaction between users and objects. The same concept should be applied to cities, so (smart)citizens could engage in configuring urban spaces. For this project, park users would use their smart-phones to activate physical devices. Benches could be inflated from the ground, canopies could fold up as shading devices and platforms could also be pumped up to be used as a playground. If not in use, the devices unfold/deflate transforming the space into - for example - a soccer field. For more: http://issuu.com/carolinalibardi/docs/parkopolis

The units were designed for the users of the chosen area. Five different groups were mapped, each of them with different lifestyles. The main parameter was the time users occupied units. By overlapping different units, a more diverse territory is created. For this project, only 2 housing units were overlapped. However, the system allows as many overlaps as necessary. Also, more users can be mapped, and new units can continually be generated.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE: THE ‘SLOPE-BRIDGE’ BUILDING

The site, located on a slope, is the natural architectural parti for a building that has to provide passage over an obstacle: the motorway. The idea is to design a building that works not only as a station, but as a park, a belvedere, a mountain, physically connecting both sides of the road, and visually connecting all the Figueres region.
