Virginia-based Dollar Tree completed its billion-dollar purchase of Family Dollar on July 6, but the acquisition could result in job loss for some of the 1,300 employees at Family Dollar’s Matthews-based distribution center. Randy Guiler, vice president of investor relations at Dollar Tree, said he couldn't give an exact number of how many jobs, and in what positions, would be impacted.
“There will be some organizational changes over time but we’re going to continue to grow the Family Dollar brand,â€? said Guiler. “I can’t give any specifics as to which jobs are impacted, or if there will be jobs that will be cut first‌ some will take place early on and others will take place over time.â€? Employees at Family Dollar’s distribution center could not comment on the acquisition due to corporate regulations. The $8.5-billion-dollar deal comes after a yearlong battle (see Family Dollar on page 10)

Professionals worry that with more free time, students will opt to stay inside watching television and playing video games rather than being physically active. Lack of physical activity can lead to overweight and obese children, which can lead to high risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and bone and joint problems, among other
