because of moving furniture and waiting for floors to dry. The average UCPS high school is about 200,000 square feet, which means the process could take all summer. The staff also is completing roofing projects at Western Union and Prospect elementary schools. Prospect students will return to school with almost an entirely new facility, with new flooring, paint and cabinets, as well as improved technology. Parkwood High School also will see some

Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter was visibly frustrated July 27 when representatives from the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) could not give Charlotte City Council an estimate of how much commuters could be paying to use express lanes along Interstate 485 and U.S. 74. Clodfelter asked NCDOT about pricing a couple of times before the start of the city council meeting, noting that express lanes projects will be up for a formal vote next month and start construction next year. “It seems to me, we’re pretty far down the road,” said District 7 Councilmember Ed Driggs of the projects winding through south Charlotte. “We ought to have some concept of what those numbers are.” Scott Cole, deputy division engineer for NCDOT, said his agency is still finalizing a tolling and revenue study. Nationally, tolls can range from 25 cents to $8 for 10 miles, but usually average $2 to $3, according to Norm Steinman, planning and design manager for the Charlotte Department of Transportation. The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization is expected to vote Aug. 19 on a transportation improvement plan with dozens of road projects in Mecklenburg, Union and Iredell counties. Express lane projects for I-485, I-77 and U.S. 74 are included.

Maintenance staff working to prepare classrooms despite uncertain budget Union County Public Schools’ (UCPS) maintenance staff is using the summer months to prepare classrooms and implement renovation projects for the upcoming school year, despite an uncertain budget. “Safe and secure can mean a lot of things," UCPS Facilities Director Don Hughes said in a news release. “It means safe air. We have to keep the humidity levels down so mold doesn’t grow. It's all about a safe and secure

MONROE – One of Union County’s most notable landmarks is one step closer to preservation. The historic Union County courthouse and grounds, located at 300 N. Main St. in downtown Monroe, received its designation as a museum by resolution at the county commissioners meeting on July 20. Recognized most notably for its elaborate cupola, the courthouse has called Monroe home since 1886. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and was designated as a historic landmark in 1985. The museum designation will protect the

environment for learning.” Hughes said summer months are the department’s busiest time, as his staff completes maintenance projects, as well as timeconsuming projects. “One of the biggest things we have to do during the summer months is strip and rewax all the floors,” Hughes said. “That’s 6 million square feet. We put seven layers of wax down and over the school year, it wears down.” Each floor has to be completed in segments
