New tenants announced at Waverly groundbreaking by Justin Vick justin@unioncountyweekly.com

Waverly’s groundbreaking was bittersweet for Frank Matthews. The property under development at Providence and Ardrey Kell roads was once known as Matthews Family Farm – a present from the parents of Sarah Houston to William Matthews for marrying their daughter in 1860. Operating and Capital Budget Ordinance. Some have suggested pulling money from the state’s 1-to-1 technology fund or other instructional funds to pay for emerging needs. UCPS Finance Director Dan Karpinski said at the Aug. 4 BOE meeting that the $20 million left from the previous fiscal year cannot be used for the emerging needs, because they’re already tied to pre-audited contracts and bids for already-approved projects. UCPS Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis also said principals have been saving about 20

The Paris Air Show served as a fitting backdrop earlier this summer to announce dozens of aerospace jobs coming to Union County, considering new capital investment has taken off to record levels this fiscal year. Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Technologies Inc. plans to invest $69.8 million into a new manufacturing plant in Monroe, creating 70 jobs over three years. The announcement concluded a fiscal year in which Monroe-Union County Economic Development secured 22 projects, generating 727 jobs and $306.5 million in total capital investment. The group went into the fiscal year hoping to capture $60 million. R. Christopher PlatĂŠ, executive director for Monroe-Union County Economic Development, describes the last year as the healthiest 12-month run for capital investment in county history. The addition of O’Neil Digital Solutions and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has allowed the county to diversify its industrial base, while increasing its long-term aerospace outlook, PlatĂŠ said. Other new and expanding companies included Scott Safety, Harris Teeter and Charlotte Pipe. “The investments are diverse not only in the industry sectors that we are bringing in, but they are diverse because they are throughout the county,â€? PlatĂŠ said. “Monroe still houses most of those projects

potential for the region, Matthews was sad about his friend, prominent Charlotte developer John Crosland Jr., being laid to rest few hours after the groundbreaking on Aug. 5, just 10 miles down Providence Road. Matthews and Crosland often talked about what to do with the land. Crosland advised Matthews on more than one occasion to hold onto it. Board of Education returns to county commissioners for ‘emerging needs’ by Courtney Schultz education@unioncountyweekly.com

Although the lawsuit was dropped between the Union County Board of Education (BOE) and Union County Board of Commissioners, a budget battle still remains. At the July 7 BOE meeting, the board and district staff requested about $2 million from the county commissioners for “emerging needs, which included HVAC unit repair at Weddington High School and heat unit repairs at Monroe Middle School, as well as a request for driver’s education funding. UCPS staff said the request comes after commissioners

denied a $2-million budget line item for the 2015-16 fiscal year for preventative and emerging needs. The county commissioners denied the request at its July 20 meeting, stating the BOE could reallocate funds from the budget for the immediate needs, and claimed the BOE had $20 million left from last year’s budget, as of July 10, that unencumbered amounts could be reallocated. However, Union County Manager Cynthia Coto could authorize a transfer of up to 10 percent of total funding of a currently funded project, according to the adopted FY 2016
