INDIAN TRAIL – Michael Alvarez faces a formidable and well-funded foe in his efforts to win a second term as mayor.

Challenger Roger Fish believes Indian Trail needs professional leaders willing to work with the state and neighboring towns to fix lagging traffic issues, as well as developers to bring opportunities to downtown.

Fish has raised more than $5,000 for his campaign, according to finance reports filed this month. Part of that includes a $2,000 personal loan.

“I do not believe in spending thousands and thousands for a position that pays you one tenth of what you’re making and a job that represents the people,” Alvarez said.

“There are so many things that money can better be spent on.”

His posting raises serious questions as to the slate of Cohn running mates. The only issue they appear to have in common is their opposition to the councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent decision to proceed forward with the construction of a new town hall.

Outside of that, the three appear very much at odds with one another.

Mr. Cohn had never voted in an Indian Trail town election until his run for office in 2011. Once elected, Cohn completely deserted his conservative base and immediately led the charge for a 27-percent property tax increase on residents. He also supported a park bond referendum, which totally incensed his recidivistic base by increasing the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debt load. However, with the approach of the 2015 election, Mr. Cohn realized the need to make amends with his reactionary political base. He then launched a series of tirades against his fellow councilmembers and the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s town manager.

Running mate Mark Wireman has joined with Cohn to oppose construction of a much needed new town hall, despite the fact each yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s construction delay would cost taxpayers an additional $500,000.

Wiremanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s argument is such construction should never be undertaken until all town parks are complete. Interestingly, this is the same Mark Wireman whom Union County Board of Elections records show having formed a PAC (Committee For Voting Against Indian Trail Park Bond) in 2012 to (see Letters on page 8)

Curves of Indian Trail supports breast cancer awareness INDIAN TRAIL – Curves of Indian Trail will offer a special enrollment price of $30 through October, with every dollar of the enrollment fee being donated to a cancer charity that is working to find a cure for breast cancer.

Curves across the country have raised nearly $15 million in 15 years in the fight against breast cancer.

“Did you know that just $30 can help support a cancer patient get three rides to and from their life saving treatment or a wig for a woman who lost her hair due to chemotherapy,” said Danielle Rojas, Curves of Indian Trail owner. “We are a family here at Curves and we are showing our support for a cause that in some way has touched us all. We are in this together.”

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue hopes to raise enough money to rescue 103 geese stranded in California.

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue hopes to save California geese INDIAN TRAIL – Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, an Indian Trail-based nonprofit, hopes to raise money to travel to Vacaville, California and rescue a flock of 103 geese and ducks fighting for survival due to extreme drought conditions.

Officials say the birds, which are located in Lagoon Valley Park, can’t fly because they are domestic. The birds are left without water and shelter.

The nonprofit hopes to send three volunteers and certified wildlife rehabbers to capture the birds, rehabilitate them and find foster homes.

“We are anxious to come relocate these geese and ducks. We're happy to help again, we just need donations to cover the cost of the trip,” CWR Founder and Director Jennifer Gordon said in a news release. “These animals will not survive much longer. They are already getting picked off by predators.”

Union County to ‘Rediscover Your Library’ on Saturday Oct. 3 MONROE – The Union County Public Library in Monroe will hold its inaugural “Rediscover Your Library” event on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1 to 5 p.m.

So we’re back to writing on stone walls again

Am I the only person concerned that, over the past six months, our society has announced to the rest of the planet (and apparently, we can throw in Mars) that we’re cashing in our chips and shutting down?

Jonathan McElvy We’re not talking about economic woes, or the definition of marriage, or that Donald Trump is an actual, bona fide candidate for President of the United States.

Of course, all of those are worthwhile discussions, but that’s not on the agenda. What we’re talking about relates directly to the way we, as once-known humans, communicate.

Here’s what got me thinking about the demise. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column about Republicans and how I think the party needs to do a better job of selecting its spokespeople. In the same column, I also mentioned that I’m a fairly conservative guy and am not ashamed that I tend to favor Republican candidates in state and national elections – in local races, political party seems to matter less.

The responses I got back were vicious.

One lady told me I might as well change parties because Republicans don’t want me in theirs. Another fellow emailed to say he didn’t want our community paper to become a liberal rag, and my column was as liberal as it got.

It dawned on me that I really can’t blame these folks for taking issue with my challenge to the Republican Party, mainly because most of us have absolutely no idea what the concept of conversation, discussion or dialogue actually means. These days, if someone says something you don’t like (thanks MSNBC and FOX News), we just change the channel and ignore the topic altogether. Democrats who don’t watch FOX and Republicans who don’t watch CNN are as narrow-minded as the groups they scorn.

So when Republicans took their shots at me, I realized they had no idea my intent was to suggest improvement in what amounts to my own party. And the reason they didn’t understand my intent relates to a much larger issue in the specter to communication.

Follow this journey with me, if you’ve got the time.

In the beginning, our history books show us these wonderful discoveries of stone walls where cavemen – or cavepeople, if we’re going to be PC here – sketched exquisite pictures of shapes and tigers and the lunar moon.

However many years later, maybe a couple, we became civilized, developed languages and plucked bird feathers to dip in mastodon blood, stealing sheets of papyrus wood to write in real-live letters.

That’s when civilization really took off. Our sheets of papyrus became thinner and thinner, we threw out the ridiculous concept of cursive writing, and we even found white dye to make our black ink easier to read in print.

Gutenberg printed the Bible in the early 1400s, using real-live letters, and in the 1600s, newspapers were introduced to the blob of land that would eventually become North America.

For about 400 years, communication continued to evolve. Smart people wrote long books, and our society embraced all the knowledge we could muster from many of the classics still on our shelves today.

There’s a reason we usually say a good book is much better than a movie.

One of those smart book writers, Alexis de Tocqueville, spent about a billion words in 1835 to offer his thoughts on “Democracy in America,” and among his many observations, “The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

What de Tocqueville didn’t know was this great civilization would begin to erode because we decided reading and writing with thoughtful words and sentences was apparently too exhausting.

First, we invented telephones so we could stop writing and just blabber in Ma Bell’s ear. Then, we invented radio, so we could listen to other people read. Then, we invented TV so we could watch other people read. And most recently, our technology and society has become so animated that Twitter will allow us to write, but only if we can do it in 140 characters or less, which means we don’t have to read very much ever.

Now that Twitter and Facebook have been around a few years, it seems our communication has literally circled back to whence it began. If you haven’t heard of emojis, well, your children will smiley-facetongue-out you later.

An emoji is what Forrest Gump invented when he fell in some mud and a smiley-face appeared on his T-shirt. He made about a million dollars doing it, and what we didn’t know is that, in 2015, our language could actually be written in emojis. A news website called Billy Penn in Philadelphia covered a political debate using, get this, cartoon pictures.

So I ask, society? Do you not see the concern? Our language has evolved from pictures to papyrus letters to printing presses to books, to phones, to radio, to TV to – you guessed it – pictures. We’re right back where we started. And it’s no wonder people have a hard time reading an 800word column these days.

Simply an insincere politician looking for an issue to run on.

Amy Stanton? She’s the wife of defeated councilman Roger Stanton who was repeatedly attacked by Cohn in the 2011 elections as being in the pocket of the “big developers” to the detriment of residents. At the time, Roger was closely affiliated with the ITCFP, a liberal leaning Political Action Committee. Amy Stanton, herself? She’s an employee of a builder. Amy might not take campaign contributions from builders, but her livelihood depends on her working relationships with them.

How does this fact square with Cohn’s repetitive attacks on the developers?

Many questions arise regarding the Cohn Group of Three. They include questionable sincerity, contradictory behavior, and self -serving statements. But, then again, it’s election time and politics makes for interesting bedfellows.

Carlton Aldrich Indian Trail Dear Editor, In a recent article entitled “Parkwood senior fights for LGBTQ rights,” Gabby Hubert is praised for being a young champion of what she considers to be a most praiseworthy cause. However, the article never addresses the underlying controversy of whether or not homosexuality is morally acceptable.

I specifically wish to address the following statement from the article: “Gabby said students at Parkwood generally hold traditional Southern values and don’t display tolerance toward the LGBTQ community.” We need to ask ourselves two questions.

1) Are these “traditional Southern values” derived from any authoritative source? I believe that they are derived from the Bible, which contains several strong prohibitions against homosexual behavior. One example can be found in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

2) What is the definition of “tolerance” in this context? In Noah Webster’s 1828 “American Dictionary of the English Language,” the word “tolerance” means “the power or capacity of enduring; or the act of enduring.” In modern times, however, the word has been redefined to include “acceptance.” John 8:1-11 records the account of an adulterous woman, brought by the scribes and Pharisees to Jesus for judgment. They wanted to stone the woman, but Jesus responded with mercy when he said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” If the account ended there, we might be tempted to think that Jesus accepted or approved of her adultery.

But He goes on to tell her to “go and sin no more.” Jesus loved and accepted the sinner but not the sin. He calls his followers to do the same. Certainly, we are not to abuse or harass anyone, as Gabby’s grandfather had

been, but neither are we to condone sinful behavior. Jesus charges us to speak the truth in love.

Candie Bill Waxhaw Dear Editor, Now we are in the midst of political "I am's," "I will's," and the "I promise's," consequently it is confusing, hard to relegate who said what, or who promised this or that. It’s up to us to decipher all of it and trust we pick the right candidate, because we have failed miserably in the past. If you need some guidance as to the Waxhaw Town Council, I would recommend Brenda Stewart as she has lived in Waxhaw longer, by far, than most residents and has attended town meeting periodically over those years, and in the past eight years, she has attended a vast majority of all those meetings, therefore she knows Waxhaw, and the various agendas needing attention and action.

She will give the council input from The people's perspective, i.e,. growth, traffic, development, and possible changes to the general operations of our local government.

She will respect your opinions and disagreements, whenever they arise, and assuage any problem with reason and facts. She is interested to the town and its diversity; the old and the new, the newcomer and the old timer, the history and education. She is really a candidate who cares.

Shell Holston Waxhaw Dear Editor, Oh my goodness. This is what we're thinking about re-electing in the next election?

Gems, all of them are just gems. One of them is OK with being the dumbest person in the world, and another one doesn't show up to meetings when he was elected to office for the very reason of showing up to meetings. You're a councilmember. It's your job to show up to meetings or step aside and let someone else do it. The last one seems just fine with letting Raleigh screw up our roads, yet he got some more deputies for us. Good for you, Mr. Drehs.

Aside from that, what else have these guys done? Mr. Cohn is proud to be on the news.

Mr. King got some signs installed. Yet, flip over a few pages and you'll see a 5-year-old did both of those on page 7!

This Indian Trail council has turned into a circus with all these councilmen playing the role of clowns in a freak show. Are these the kinds of people we want representing our town? Indian Trail is a farce and a mockery of what government should be!

Thank God I like the restaurants and houses in the area. If I were judging the town from its council alone I would run far, far away.

A look at sanctions against area doctors caught misbehaving

CHARLOTTE – Doctors tell us to make good choices, but a small percentage fail to heed that advice.

Some in Mecklenburg and Union counties have had to answer for getting arrested, illegally treating family members or straddling the fine line of medical ethics.

State law allows the N.C. Medical Board to suspend or revoke medical licenses for more than a dozen offenses, including immoral, dishonorable and unprofessional conduct.

The board issued 189 public actions in 2014, ranging from public letters of concern to license revocations, according to its annual report.

Below is a summary of public actions taken by the N.C. Medical Board against professionals in Mecklenburg and Union counties from September 2014 to August 2015.

Drinking and driving

Joel Wesley Thompson, a Charlotte physician assistant, had his license suspended following a March 21 arrest on DWI charges.

Three years prior, he had been placed on probation in part because the board discovered he didn’t mention a July 1987 DWI arrest on his application for a physician assistant license. The board discovered the omission while investigating two hit-and-run charges in 2011 involving his car, which witnesses said had a license plate reading, “Dr. Wes.” The board noted Thompson wasn’t a doctor.

Inappropriate comments

Latimer Anthony Taylor, a Charlotte physician, was reprimanded April 24 after making “inappropriate and unprofessional comments” to a female patient in November 2013. He was ordered to meet with a clinical psychologist for a comprehensive assessment.

Sexual assault

Fidelis Iguodala Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, a Charlotte physician, agreed to not practice medicine after the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested him Jan. 30 on charges of sexual assault and battery. Uwensuyi-Edosomwan denied the allegations. In 2010, the board reprimanded him for having illegible handwriting.

Misdiagnosis

Thaddeus Drexel Houston, a Charlotte doctor, received a letter dated Sept. 29, 2014, from the N.C. Medical Board about a CT scan he interpreted in June 2008. The board said Houston didn’t note the patient’s severe aortic atherosclerotic disease. The patient, who came in with abdominal pain, had to get part of her leg amputated.

Molestation

Randall Eugene Lewis, a Monroe physi-

cian assistant, had his license revoked March 16 following the Matthews Police Department issuing arrest warrants against Lewis on charges of statutory rape and incest.

Lewis didn’t attend a medical board hearing on Feb. 19 to discuss the charges.

False ownership

Daniel Hamaty, a Pineville physician, had his license suspended Jan. 22 after his medical license in Tennessee was retired in July 2014.

He was said to have been owner of a pain clinic that was actually owned and operated by an unlicensed doctor. According to the Tennessee Medical Board’s report, the owner picked up Hamaty from a retirement home to drive him to the clinic twice a week.

Helping unlicensed clinic

Salvatore Franco Bianco, a Cornelius physician, had his license suspended for a year and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine June 25 after the board concluded he helped an unlicensed medical practice. Bianco supervised a nurse who gave pain injections at HealthMed, a defunct Charlotte pain center owned by two chiropractors.

Treating family

Stephen Robert Giordano, a Huntersville doctor, received a letter dated Aug. 12 concerning the treatment of four of his family members in 2014 for ailments like wrinkles and male-pattern baldness. The board frowns upon physicians treating people with close relationships except for minor ailments or emergencies. Even in those circumstances, doctors should keep records.

Health-care fraud

Mark Tuan Le, a Cornelius doctor, had his license suspended May 8 after he pleaded guilty to felony health-care fraud and tax evasion charges in June 25, 2014. The board previously suspended his license in 2013 after investigating his practice billing five patients for services or visits in which there was no evidence on their medical charts.

Losing patient

Michael Alan Bellamy, a Huntersville physician, received a public letter of concern Feb. 20 following the death of a newborn child in April 2009. The board expressed concern that Bellamy didn’t respond to a hemorrhage from the delivery.

Treating family, part II

Gustavo Adolfo Diaz, a Huntersville physician, was reprimanded Dec. 11, 2014, for prescribing a weight-loss medication to a relative without creating a medical record. The board also investigated complaints from five patients.

Both sides say if a hearing was held on the matter, experts would agree with their views of whether Diaz conformed to state medical standards concerning those complaints.

The cool breeze, new colors on the trees and pumpkin spice lattes – fall is here. However, for allergy sufferers, new issues arise with the new season.

Runny eyes, frequent sneezing, congestion and exhaustion – all allergy symptoms – can prove dangerous for fall driving, according to AARP Driver Safety.

One in 5 Americans suffer from an allergy that impacts their daily life, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Julie Lee, retired vice president and national director of AARP Driver Safety Education and Outreach, and AARP Driver Safety have recommended a few steps for allergy sufferers to stay safe while driving and still manage their symptoms:

“Spring clean” your car

Seasonal cleaning doesn’t end in the home, but carries over to vehicles. Removing all trash, dusting the dashboard and vacuuming throughout the car, including floor mats, can be a start.

“Your shoes (also) carry moisture to the mats, making them a great destination for mold spores and other allergens,” Lee said.

“Consider using washable, plastic mats instead of cloth ones for easier cleaning and less moisture retention.”

Wiping down the exterior of the car can help remove pollen that can seep through air filters into the car.

Change your air filters C

Many cars today have filters have advanced filters that weed out dust, pollen and other allergens. Pollen filters can be installed in most cars, but also must be maintained and cleaned. Check your car’s owner’s man-

ual for guidance about how frequently to change the filter. Repairs can cost up to $35, but can also increases the efficiency of the car, Lee said.

Keep your car insulated

“Not surprisingly, limiting the amount of pollen-ridden air in your car is the best way to keep it allergy-free,” Lee said.

Lee suggests driving with the windows rolled up and the fans on during allergy season. When running any air conditioning or heat, put it on a recirculating setting to minimize the amount of air coming in from outside.

Also, check the weather stripping on your car to make sure it’s intact and fully seals the windows.

Check warning labels

When you struggle to breathe and your eyes start to water, it’s logical to reach for allergy medication. Many over-the-counter and prescription allergy medication can contain ingredients that make you drowsy. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year. This results in an estimated 1,550 death, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses.

Lee advises allergy sufferers to talk with a doctor of pharmacist about the impact of medication on alertness. Popular brands, such as Claritin and Allegra, have nondrowsy formulas.

Take note of the weather

“Before hitting the road, check your local weather to see if you are at a higher risk of suffering from an allergy attack,” Lee said.

Some weather-reporting websites and broadcasters provide daily pollen counts and will warn about high-risk days for hay fever.

Tips for recognizing and addressing domestic violence

Domestic violence doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t discriminate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not by race, culture, socioeconomic status or even gender.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something Chief Donnie Gay, of the Wingate Police Department, learned the hard way through being physically abused by his ex-wife; he knows how hard it is to break the cycle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She would hit me about ever couple months, or so. With the domestic violence cycle â&#x20AC;Ś thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tension, assault and then a honeymoon phase that lasts for a little bit,â&#x20AC;?

Gay said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For about a year, I could tell when tension was building; I knew it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be long before there would be some kind of incident.â&#x20AC;?

Gay is one of more than 12 million men and women who experience physical violence, rape or stalking by an intimate partner each year in the United States, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Now free from his abusive situation, Gay works closely with Turning Point Domestic Violence Shelter to support individuals in domestic violence situations and educate the public about a common, but oft-ignored, problem. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My whole perspective changed when I became that (victimized) person,â&#x20AC;? Gay said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I used to tell people as a young (police) officer, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Why did you stay? Why didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you just leave?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I realize after going through it myself, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not that easy.â&#x20AC;?

Gayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous views are a common misconception. Sometimes people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize how difficult it is for a person to leave an abusive situation; other times, they want to help, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Turning Point Executive Director Ashley Lantz has helped Union County Weekly compile a list of tips for individuals who know someone in an abusive situation, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to help. â&#x20AC;˘ Understand domestic violence.

Domestic violence encompasses physical, emotional, psychological, sexual and financial abuse. â&#x20AC;˘ Recognize the signs.

Victims often become withdrawn, spending less time with family and friends. Abusive partners are often jealous or possessive, inciting fear, guilt, shame and intimidation to wear their abused partner down.

Abusers also might threaten to hurt the victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children or others close to her/him. â&#x20AC;˘ Discreetly provide information.

Refer victims to domestic violence hotlines, shelters and other resources. Handing out pamphlets abusers might find or browsing the Internet on a device the abuser uses is not recommended.

â&#x20AC;˘ Understand itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to the victim to leave the situation.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that's the hardest thing for anyone who sees a person in an abusive relationship,â&#x20AC;? Lantz said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You should support them and be there for them when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready to make that decision.â&#x20AC;?

Big South 5K raises money for county middle schools

Six years ago, the Big South Division I Athletic Conference, based in Charlotte, was looking for a way to make a difference in its community. After seeing a need for funding in middle school athletics, the Big South jumped at the opportunity to institute a 5K road race with proceeds benefiting local middle schools.

On Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8 a.m., an estimated 1,500 runners will take off in the sixth annual Big South 5K Road Race in south Charlotteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Blakeney shopping center.

Registration costs $25, and $20 of that will go directly toward a specified middle school in the area. When participants register online, they can select which middle school they would like to support. All middle schools in Union, Mecklenburg, Lancaster and York counties are eligible.

Funds will help athletic programs purchase items such as new equipment, jerseys and travel expenses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Back in 2010 when we started this, middle school athletics was hurting,â&#x20AC;? said Chad Cook, assistant commissioner with the Big South conference. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a lot of talk about eliminating different programs, and the race became a way for us to help keep athletics sustainable.â&#x20AC;?

More than 700 runners â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including many middle school teams, teachers and school staff â&#x20AC;&#x201C; participated in the race the first year.

The event has since grown to more than 1,300 participants and counting. Cook said he anticipates exceeding $100,000 in mon-

Having it in Blakeney helps, because thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a strong running community there.â&#x20AC;?

A post-race party will be held for participants and guests after the 5K, which will kick off the ninth annual Blakeney Boo Bash. Cook said that even though the race is family friendly and will include many middle school-aged children, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a great course for competitive runners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very fast course,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely family friendly and most participants will be families, but it will also attract a lot of serious runners who are looking to PR.â&#x20AC;?

Education Briefs UCPS names finalists top principal, assistant principal awards Three principals and three assistant principals were named finalists in Union County Public Schools’ Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year races, a 23-year tradition.

The finalists for principal are: Scott Spencer, of Shiloh Elementary School; Blaire Traywick, of Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts; and Dr. Jonathan Tyson, of Piedmont High School.

Assistant principal finalists are: Brian Davis, of Parkwood Middle School; Pascale Glenn, of Sun Valley Middle School; and Drusilla Thomas, of Sun Valley High School.

The finalists were nominated by their peers and the two winners will be chosen by a panel of UCPS principals, will be announced Oct. 1.

Area law enforcement escorts Piedmont student MONROE – Hometown Heroes gave Piedmont High School student Greg Floyd star treatment on Sept. 18 through escorting him to school with a caravan of law enforcement.

Hometown Heroes is a nonprofit of current and retired public safety officers and business owners in the community, who support children of Union, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties with serious and life-altering illnesses.

Greg is battling leukemia and students lined the drive to greet him as he returned to school. Piedmont students sold yellow bandanas throughout the week to increase awareness of childhood cancer, while wearing “Team Greg” T-shirts.

They also won third place in “Best Hanging Basket” for Swedish Ivy. “The PRHS FFA grows plants every spring for a plant sale. The plant sale is our biggest fundraiser and it helps raise money to send students to Kentucky for the National FFA Convention,” FFA Faculty Advisor Bethany Sweatt said in a news release. “The students plant the seeds, transplant the plants once they are big enough, and then help with the sale. They also are responsible for taking care of the plants. They work very hard and are very proud of what they accomplish with the plant sale.”

Scholastic Anglers event kicks off season with big fish MONROE – The first event of the 2015-16 Scholastic Anglers Tournament Series kicked off with new faces and a big catch.

Josh Gentry, of Sun Valley Fishing, caught a 3.7-pound bass; Blake Rorie, of Central Academy Fishing, caught a 2.55-pound bass; and Noah Makley, of Central Academy Fishing, snagged a 2.5-pound bass.

“The stunner of the day was newcomer, Megan O'Neill, of Porter Ridge Fishing who caught, landed, and brought to the scales the first bass of the day, a 0.45-pound bass,” Brian Booth, of Scholastic Anglers, wrote in an email.

Malakai McKinney, of Marvin Ridge Fishing, caught two bass.

The next meeting of the Scholastic Anglers Workshop Series is slated for Oct. 15, a Thursday, at Boater's Marine, 1829 Williams Road in Monroe.

Four Marvin Ridge High School seniors wanted to give a â&#x20AC;&#x153;kickâ&#x20AC;? to soccer players abroad through a school project.

Seniors Will Meredith, Riley McCrossan, Chelsea Vickers and Carly Bretschneider are part of the International Baccalaureate program and were working on a project for their Creativity/Activity/Service course. The group decided to conduct a sports equipment drive for Cleats for Kids, a community service organization that provides soccer equipment for financially-disadvantaged kids. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We all had soccer in our life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; either played soccer or been a part of a soccer family â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and wanted to contribute to the community while focusing on soccer,â&#x20AC;? Chelsea said.

MATTHEWS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Carmel Christian School community will likely have to wait until the 2016-17 school year for a new official head of school, according to Jay Hancock, executive pastor at Carmel Baptist Church in Matthews.

Former Head of School J. Van Wade resigned from the position in late May, but Hancock would not reveal the reason for the departure, stating he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t comment on â&#x20AC;&#x153;personnel matters.â&#x20AC;?

Carmel Christian, which is a ministry of Carmel Baptist, was founded in 1993; Wade had served as head of school for the past 15 years.

Although the Carmel Christian community waited all summer for new official leadership, the school board of the independent school is still determining required credentials.

The school board is tasked with the responsibility to recommend a head of school candidate to the church for approval.

Hancock explains, unlike other church-affiliated independent schools, Carmel Christian is interconnected with the church, so the church is integral to the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision-making.

The school board has developed a search committee, which includes Hancock, school board members and school personnel.

The search committee has enlisted the services of Coleman-Lew, a Charlotte-based executive search firm, to find candidates for the position in a national search.

The executive pastor said the search committee is waiting on the search firm to present a developed profile of a head of school candidate, which he expects will take place in the next couple weeks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The goal is some time during the school year that a candidate be selected and take the position in the summer or at the beginning of the new school year,â&#x20AC;? Hancock said.

In the meantime, Associate Head of School Jack Kelley has stepped in as interim head of school for the 201516 school year, but Hancock said the board has not yet decided whether he will be a potential candidate.

Despite no head of school selection in immediate sight, the church and school plan to expand its facilities.

Hancock said the school board is planning to build a student discipleship center that will meet the needs of student ministries, as well as the needs of middle and upper school students.

Carmel Christian has 809 students, according to its website, with more than 170 within the upper school.

The new head of school would not be a part of the planning process of the new facility, as Hancock hopes to break ground by June 2016.

The tragic result of the 1954 Johnson Amendment

Three hundred and ninety-five years ago this month, a collection of radicals endured a miserable, stormy trans-Atlantic voyage in a boat onethird the size of one of Donald Trump’s yachts. Among the 102 men, women, children, and teenDr. Mark Harris agers was one wife so heavily pregnant that she gave birth aboard ship when it finally dropped anchor off the coast of Massachusetts. Blown off course beyond the territory of their colonial charter, these colonists recognized their need for a governing document. In one day’s time and in fewer than 200 words the pilgrims created “The Mayflower Compact,” revered as the first step in the American experiment in selfgovernment.

Two things are striking about this document. First, the expressed purpose of these voyagers: To plant a colony in America “for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith.” These are not adventureseekers. These are families seeking new and permanent homes away from a state that in-

serted itself into their religious practices and a state church they viewed as hopelessly corrupt. Second, despite their stated religious purpose, the colonists created “a civil body politic.” Their government was not to be a theocracy. They created a civil body: citizens acting together outside the realm of the ecclesiastical structure of the church.

About 240 years ago, the descendants of these radicals rebelled against the colonial powerhouse of the world when England severely restricted their Massachusetts government. A year later, the approximately 1,300 word Declaration of Independence was written in less than a month and debated for four days. Our nation was birthed to take its place in the world as entitled by “the laws of nature and of nature’s God.” The nation was ultimately organized under our current constitution with its accompanying Bill of Rights, which protects first and foremost the citizen’s right to exercise his religion freely and prohibits the state from making a law establishing one religion for all of the United States.

Sixty-one years ago an amendment was added regarding “nonprofits,” including churches, to the U. S. tax code. The tax code, a monument to bureaucracy currently numbering about 4 million words, has been evolving for 100 years. This 1954 amendment, known as the Johnson Amendment, is the source from which we derive our false, but culturally pervasive, beliefs that pastors cannot speak about

political issues and public servants must check their faith at the door. The purity and simplicity of the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution are today obscured.

The results can border on the ridiculous, as happened recently when a prominent Charlotte faith leader criticized Gov. Pat McCrory for agreeing to appear at a prayer event at the Convention Center and “inviting” other citizens to attend through a newspaper ad.

(It was later clarified that the Governor was not the sponsor of the event, nor had any financial connection to it. At the event, he asked us to pray for and help those in our community addicted to drugs and alcohol, particularly traumatized veterans.) The faith leader stated that the governor was violating the separation of church and state by calling for a day of prayer and by attending a prayer event not paid for or sponsored by any government entity. Clearly, he was not.

Furthermore, at various times in our history the Continental Congress, various governors, and Presidents John Adams, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln have called the nation to days of prayer and fasting.

The intent of our founding documents is clear. No one – no faith leader nor any person of faith – is banned from participation in the civil political process. The Pope spoke to Congress, but we don’t have a Catholic theocracy.

Gov. McCrory spoke to a prayer meeting,

but we don’t have a Presbyterian theocracy.

All of the pastors who have ever served in our state or federal government have served in the “civil body politic,” bringing the moral convictions of their faith into their service, but without establishing ecclesiastical rule.

The tragic result of the Johnson Amendment is that many sincere and gracious Christians now truly believe the right thing for them to do is be silent on political issues.

Nothing could be further from the intent of those who suffered hardship and death to establish our American civil body politic.

Monroe remains undefeated, injuries take toll on Cavs

It’s becoming more apparent each week that Monroe might have another state championship caliber team.

The Redhawks last made it to the title game in 2013, where they fell to High Point (N.C.) T.W. Andrews, 18-14, at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.

Monroe beat Cuthbertson 31-7 on Sept. 25 to improve to 6-0, which is the best start it’s had since 2009.

“We told our kids we got three parts of this thing – nonconference, our conference, and the state championship,” Monroe coach Johnny Sowell said. “We completed one. I told them, ‘Now, we got to take care of our conference.’”

The Redhawks shouldn’t face much of a challenge in taking care of its conference.

For Cuthbertson (3-3), its bye week couldn’t come at a better time. The Cavaliers are down 13 starters, including quarterback Austin Kendall, who should be back in time to play against Marvin Ridge (Oct. 9).

“We’re super excited about the bye week,” Cuthbertson coach David Johnson said. “I don’t know if anyone has ever said that, but we’re excited about getting the bye week here, and once we get this hopefully we’ll get through the next two weeks and get ready for conference play.”

If the Cavs can get healthy, this early season adversity could help them in the long run if and when they face challenges later in the season.

“We’ve tested ourselves,” Johnson said. “The first two weeks

we were healthy. We were playing well. Things happen. This is football, so for us it’s just a matter of using this bye week to get healthy and getting to conference play ready to go. Our mindset has never waivered. We’re not the poor me, poor us attitude.”

Johnson added his team is as good as any team and that it can beat any team on any given day. But first, Cuthbertson

needs everyone to get healthy, so they can start practicing and playing together that it might build the chemistry and cohesion it needs to compete for another conference championship.

Weddington (4-1) returns to action after a bye to complete its nonconference slate with a visit from Charlotte Country Day (3-2).

Linebackers Myles Moore (36 tackles) and Joey Hobbs (34 tackles and four interceptions) should be chomping at the bit, ready for a field day along with the rest of the Warrior defense.

Sun Valley (3-3) quarterback Sam Howell overcame three interceptions to throw a touchdown pass with 14.7 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the Spartans to a dramatic 26-22 win over Forest Hills on Sept. 25. The Spartans get a bye this week before hosting Piedmont (Oct. 9).

The Panthers improved to 4-1 when it blanked CATA 35-0. Piedmont will visit West Stanly before its date with Sun Valley.

Weddington baseball coach Travis Poole will be competing with our managing editor Hannah Chronis and myself in our weekly Football Pick ‘Em. Poole guided the Warriors to consecutive state championship crowns in 2012 and 2013, and year in and year out has Weddington around the top of the Southern Carolinas Conference and in the running for a state title.

The Pirates are 0-5, and four of their five losses have been by double digits with the closest one being a three-point defeat at the hands of Sun Valley, and a turnaround from this downward spiral doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

The Patriots are beginning to get into a rhythm with their ground attack led by running back Quantavious McGill.

Independence is making strides each week, especially on defense. The Patriots have held opponents to an average of 12.5 points per game in their last four contests.

Buccaneer coach Drew Witman has his team competing in his first year to lead the program, but Country Day isn’t at the championship level Tim Carson has the Warriors playing at.

Weddington’s fundamental, workmanlike approach on offense and attacking defense led by Myles Moore and Joey Hobbs should plunder the Bucs backfield.

Piedmont at West Stanly Friday at 7:30 p.m.

This is the perfect warm up game for the Panthers before they get into conference play. Piedmont’s rushing attack is a three-headed monster led Khris Missick, Jordan Deese and Matt Price, who should be a load for the Colts.

Piedmont will have its hands full slowing down West Stanly running back Malik Jackson (113 carries for 697 yards and eight touchdowns), but their approach on offense can give them a significant edge in the time of possession category and keep the Colts off the field.
