Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I have been asked by many Indian Trail residents why I'm running for Indian Trail town council.

As I sat in a June meeting, listening to public comments and noticing how upset the residents were with council, I watched some members of council smirk, giggle and text. These members were involving themselves in anything but listening to the residents. I was furious. Then, I heard Gordon Daniels say he really didn’t need to ask for permission because he was already elected

by Indian Trail. This is the type of wrongheaded thinking I am running to oppose.

As a councilmember, it’s your job to represent the people of Indian Trail. On some issues, especially those with $8-million price tags like a new town hall, you ask the voters what they want by using referendums. All but one council member voted for the town hall, with its $8-million price tag. Councilmember David Cohn was the only councilmember who insisted putting the new town hall up to a vote for the residents to decide. Other council members laughed at Cohn’s proposal. This behavior is unacceptable by our elected officials.

My blood boiled during this meeting because it was apparent that these councilmembers did not care, and would not consider, the voice of residents. This indifference to our residents is common among the majority of our current council.

I want to bring Indian Trail back to the people.

Union County Weekly | October 9, 2015 | Page 3 than those who sit on council. I believe council is to serve only as our voice, and they are to listen to the residents they serve. Unfortunately, it seems the majority just laughs and does what they want – or what they are told by their “handlers.”

I also would like to make a note that my campaign is not backed by any developer. I am backed entirely by the people of Union County that know me, and believe in me. Most important to me are the residents of Indian Trail who have no agenda other than the wellbeing of Indian Trail. I have the support of friends who know I will bring Indian Trail’s voice back to the people.

Thank you, Amy R. Stanton Indian Trail Dear Editor, Mr. Cohn’s claim about the tax increase is not factual.

Mr. Cohn has claimed of late that the total four cent or 27-percent tax increase that he voted for at the June 12, 2012 council meeting was exclusively to be set aside to pay for the parks, when in fact the town manager informed that the tax increase would go to a “debt service and capital reserve fund.”

From the minutes of meeting from the June 12, 2012 town council meeting are Mr. Cohn’s comments: “Mr. Cohn advised he came with intentions to vote against the budget, he listened, lost sleep over it and the more he looks at it and thinks about it, in all honesty we could not have raised taxes tonight but it will happen eventually. He truly believes if it went another year or two, four cents would not be enough. I have to live with my vote, although it’s not easy, but if we want to

move forward and put part of these things into Indian Trail we are going to have to do it.”

There was no mention of parks.

The vote for the Park Bond took place in November of that year, more than four months later. Yet he claims the total 27-percent tax increase was exclusively to be set aside to pay for the parks.

The Park Bond referendum one year earlier was voted down. He could not have known in June that a majority of the voters would vote a larger Park Bond in November.

Severin Jacobsen Indian Trail Dear Editor, I read with interest (Jonathan McElvy’s column ‘So we’re back to writing on stone walls’) in the Union County Weekly that we just received. You made me laugh and think. It seems to me that you are exactly right. Since I don't "emoji" it seems that very soon I won't be able to communicate. What a sad shape our world is in.

You were also right on about the need for the Republicans to communicate better. Since they do such a poor job, I am now an Independent.

One would hope for a little common sense from both sides of the aisles.

Publicity signs for political candidates appeared on the property of developers long before they should have. And that is just the first rule that liberals will break because the tax and spend liberals/democrats – Roger Fish, Trip

Melton, Pam DeMarco and Tiffany McKee – are being subsidized by developers.

Believe me, people put money into what they can get something out of. If the people of Indian Trail vote these folks into office, they are giving the developers carte blanc to do whatever they want.

Town council members receive only a stipend for being on the council; their campaigns are not self-funded. The developers are pouring money into each one of them so they will have several bought and paid for mouth pieces on the council. This is wrong and needs to be stopped.

You might not know that Nancy Jacobson handles the McKee, Melton and DeMarco campaign funds, the developers feed money to her for dispersment.

There is surely something fishy going on in Indian Trail.

Show these developers that they do not run or own Indian Trail. Vote to elect/re-elect Mayor Michael Alvarez, Mark Wireman, David Cohn and Amy Stanton.

Eddie Mitchell Indian Trail Dear Editor, It’s because I love Indian Trail that I have to speak out about the misrepresentations hurled at David Cohn. I can only surmise it’s because of Mr. Cohn’s uncompromising honesty that the PAC groups and their supporters have reduced themselves to lying in an effort to ensure their hold on Indian Trail. There was a vague “recollection” by one PAC group member that Mr. Cohn voted in support of the 1,800 (see Letters to the Editor on page 8)

WAXHAW – Ken Adelglass needed a change in early 2014.

The business he was working for as a Web developer was struggling, when out of the blue he discovered a new passion – teaching computer code to young learners.

Ken Adelglass It all started when Adelglass began looking for ways to teach computer code to his then-12-year-old son. In a society of rapidly advancing technology, the Waxhaw resident felt it was important for his son to begin learning the trade.

“I found some really cool tutorials, did an hour of code with him on Code.org, and he loved it,” Adelglass said. “I thought, ‘I bet it’d be fun teaching this to (other) kids, too.’”

Thus, Kid Coders was born. Adelglass worked overnight on a website, organized some summer camps and set up a way for campers to register online. He reached out to Waxhaw Entrepreneurs for advice and eventually secured a room at the Niven-Price building in Waxhaw, where he hosted summer camps during summer 2014. About 80 kids attended the camp, and the reaction was positive, he said.

“We were off to a great start,” Adelglass said.

Shortly after summer ended, Adelglass realized something – he didn’t have a plan for where to take Kid Coders from there. He’d been so wrapped up in the busyness and excitement of the summer camps that he hadn’t thought to map out what he was going to do next.

Eventually, Adelglass added classes and workshops focusing on topics such as Lego robotics. That boosted his business and put him back on the radar through summer 2015, when he hosted another series of camps.

“I’ve learned a lot from my mistakes,” he said. “… One challenge has been learning how to market to families. What I’ve realized – this was a big lesson after summer camps – is you can’t advertise things to families here with only a two-week lead time. If you plan things well in advance, like six to eight weeks, it’ll work out better.”

Adelglass also has begun using Raspberry Pi computers – tiny, handheld devices – to teach techniques to children. He also works with high school volunteers from Central Academy of Technology and Arts and Marvin Ridge High School, and has begun hosting classes in Indian Trail, as well.

Though his business has evolved, Adelglass’s mission has remained the same.

“I think it’s important for kids to learn this stuff early,” he said. “Schools are now voting to get computer science into the curriculum, but that takes time … One of the reasons why I started this business is I think it’s important, while kids are young, for them to get that exposure.”

Maryann Giorgi was diagnosed with triple negative metastatic breast cancer in January and has undergone chemotherapy treatments and a double mastectomy.

She’s currently undergoing radiation treatments. Girogi is a client of Cindy’s Maryann Giorgi Hope Chest, an Indian Trail-based nonprofit that provides a variety of services to breast cancer patients.

What has helped you keep going in the face of your diagnosis?

The love and support I have from my family and friends. It is truly amazing. Also, my wonderful medical team. I'm not ready to give up.

How has Cindy's Hope Chest played a role in your journey?

I have known Cindy for sometime ‌ She was the first person I called when I felt the lump ‌ She took my hand and said, “I’m going to be by your side from now ‘til,â€? and she has. She has come to doctor’s appointments with me, listened to me, cried with me, smiled with me and more.

What advice would you give to others battling breast cancer?

Let it sink in. Then, to reach out to Cindy and her wonderful organization ‌ Trust your medical team. If you don’t like them, fire them ‌ Keep yourself busy, but take time to rest.

Write a blog – something I have done, also. It lets you express your feelings and is much easier keeping your family and friends in the loop.

News Briefs League of Women Voters to host forum next week WAXHAW – The League of Women Voters of Union County will hold a candidate forum for candidates in the town’s 2015 municipal election on Oct. 15, a Thursday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Waxhaw Women’s Club, located at 200 E. Main St. The forum is open to the public and will be an opportunity for voters to learn about the candidates.

INDIAN TRAIL – Common Heart will hold its seventh annual Love In Action Fundraising Banquet on Oct. 23, a Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Weddington United Methodist Church.

The event will be a celebration of the work of the nonprofit, which serves those in need in Mecklenburg, Union and Anson counties. The banquet will include a silent auction, buffet and an after dinner variety show featuring local talent.

An award will be presented to Common Heart’s volunteer of the year.

Tickets are free, but guests are asked to “bring their best donation” to the fundraiser. Cash donations (ticket value is $20), nonperishable food items for Common Cupboard food pantries and/ or a yearly pledge for the Patron of the Heart fundraising program will be accepted.

Shred Day in Stallings is Oct. 24 STALLINGS – Stallings will hold a Shred Day on Oct. 24, a Saturday, from 9 a.m. until noon in the town hall parking lot. Residents are encouraged to bring any items they would like properly disposed.

The following guidelines are in place for items to be shredded: • Individuals must dispose of any boxes or cartons used to transport items to be shredded.

• Residents with 12 or more boxes of material to be shred should allow ample time.

Two-day fall festival in Waxhaw WAXHAW – Waxhaw will hold a two-day festival downtown on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11, from noon to 5 p.m.

The festival is free, open to the public and will include live music, concessions, arts and crafts, business and community fair, carnival rides,

I’m a Millennial, but it’s not all that bad

A few days ago I was shopping in Publix (truth be told, one of my favorite pastimes). I bake a lot in the fall, and, for some reason, can still never manage to keep track of which ingredients I have in my pantry and which ones I actually need. I came Hannah Chronis home that day with a quarter-pound bag of all-purpose flour only to find I already had four bags of flour of the same size, unopened and unused.

It was during my usual unnecessary grocery shopping trip that I overheard (I promise I wasn't eavesdropping) a conversation between two middle-age moms, frustrated with a coffee shop barista who took too long to take her order because he was texting on the job. #firstworldproblems “What can you do, though? That’s just the millennial generation, unfortunately,” she said.

Millennials. Lazy. Selfish. Entitled. Tech-obsessed. Disrespectful. Those are just a few words our elders use to describe 20-somethings today

(myself being one of them) and, unfortunately, the list goes on and on. It’s not a new phenomenon – older generations have aloofly looked down on their children’s children since man walked out of the cave. But for those of us born in the 80s, 90s and 2000s, it’s a stereotype that doesn't seem to be wearing off with time.

We’re the “Me Me Me” generation. We received trophies and ribbons for participating.

We were told we could do anything. We were coddled, bottle fed and moved back home with our parents after college so Mom could do our laundry and fix supper every night. We’re attached to our phones because of a deep-rooted anxiety that, no matter where we are or who we’re with, we’re missing out on something better. We’re taking selfies instead of taking our time. And at the end of the day, we hold out our hands and demand, “Give me a job! Give me benefits! Give me a 35-hour workweek for $60K! Give me a house and a car and respect!”

Or at least, that’s what the moms in Publix think.

I have to admit – I did receive a participation ribbon every year I was a little league cheerleader. Go Eagles!

And I’ll be the first to admit – I check my phone more than I should. I have a complex because my younger sister has more Instagram followers than I do and, last night, I realized I was sitting in bed watching “The Voice” while my iPhone, iPad and MacBook were all within

reach. I was alone, but having a conversation with three other people, thanks to iMessage.

My grandfather worked third shift at a poultry plant to put four boys through college. My dad worked there too, before he went to college and built a commercial real estate company from the ground up. He chased after, and eventually caught, “The American Dream,” but doesn't hesitate to remind me that he started off dirt broke with my mom in a one-room apartment.

Like most stereotypes, there’s truth in that of millennials. But don’t get me wrong. We’re working hard. We’re reminded of our blue-collar working grandfathers as we sit behind computer screens looking for jobs. After college, I started out working at a community newspaper making less than $2,000 a month. But I worked hard. I got to work early and stayed late. I saved my money. Eventually, I landed a bigger job that paid a little more. And I’m still working.

My best friend is in her third year of medical school at UNC – Chapel Hill training to become a pediatrician. My younger sister is a personal trainer who recently helped a young man with cerebral palsy confined to a wheelchair finish a triathlon. Her boyfriend helped a startup tech business grow into one of the largest in Silicon Valley.

I wish the coffee barista hadn’t checked his phone on the job in front of the Publix mom.

It makes the rest of us look bad.

apartments in downtown. Mr. Cohn spoke out against those apartments. He went door to door in the neighborhoods most heavily impacted by this project to get the opinions of the people as to whether they wanted the apartments. The results were overwhelmingly against the project. Mr. Cohn not only voted against the construction, but Mr. Savoie and Mr. Daniels, both of whom had accepted developer money for campaigns, refused to recuse themselves from the vote and ignored citizens who came to the meeting to speak out against the project.

As for the municipal complex, Mr. Cohn has consistently called for the town hall to be brought before voters. In regards to the 27percent tax increase being thrown around, Mr. Cohn was a supporter of the parks. He made that clear during the last election. The council voted on a four-cent tax increase, which was supposed to be dedicated to paying for the parks.

The parks were put to a referendum before the people who voted in favor of the project with the understanding that the tax increase council voted on would be used to pay off park debt.

Why are there so many distortions in regards to Mr. Cohn’s record? The answer is simple. Mr. Cohn stands between the residents of Indian Trail and the developers. Where we all see our homes and the lives we have built here, the developers and special interest groups see potential profit and personal gain.

I am smart enough to be given true facts and to be able to make my own decisions. Manipulations and lies will not get my vote. They do, however, insult my intelligence.

place. David Cohn, although he would never tell you himself, is one of those people. Whether it’s 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., whether it’s an issue involving a council vote or the financial needs of fellow residents, David Cohn is there with a willingness to help, a shoulder to lean on, and solutions for every problem. Over the years, he has raised thousands of dollars to benefit local cancer patients.

Ed Meehan, a neighbor who was stricken with a brain tumor, had to go to New York for a badly needed operation. David got to work and, together with neighbors, raised $16,000 by selling raffle tickets and organizing a golf tournament. I watched as he went door to door with his family to ask people to help Ed. While Ed lost his battle, the operation extended his life and gave him more time with his family. Long before he ran for office, David and his wife were recognized by the town and given a certificate for demonstrating “love and compassion” for their community.

These are only two of the many people he has helped in times of serious illness. When he recognized the need for special needs children in Indian Trail to have a sports league, David raised thousands of dollars for the Miracle League.

When he became aware of concerns regarding safety and traffic around Poplin Elementary, David organized a meeting with representatives from the Sherriff’s Office, Poplin, and UCPS Transportation Office to address the concerns of citizens. This allowed people to voice their opinions and get feedback as to possible solutions.

For all he does, David expects nothing in return; he doesn’t want recognition or even thanks. What we all see as extraordinary he simply sees as his responsibility. When people call him for help with an issue regarding the town, the schools, traffic, or a medical crisis, he is there and willing to lend a hand.

David Cohn is a man who keeps his word, rolls up his sleeves, and says, “What can I do to help?”

Business Briefs Arts council will provide $32.5K in county grassroots funding The Union County Arts Council recently announced its Grassroots Arts Grant program, which will provide funding to seven arts groups in Union County.

Funds have been made available to taxexempt nonprofits focusing on promoting and developing diverse cultural arts programming in Union County. Receiving organizations include: Union Symphony Society; Union County Youth Ballet; Union County Playmakers; the Storefront Theater; the Andrew Jackson Historical Foundation; the Artists Music Guild; and the town of Wingate. The total amount provided was $32,500.

“These grants are key to the continued accomplishments of these deserving arts groups. It is important that the arts council support the arts throughout our area by providing funding and other resources so that Union County’s quality of life can continue to thrive.” Barbara Faulk, executive director of the Union County Arts Council, said in a news release.

The council’s grants are part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resource’s Grassroots Arts program, and have been offered to the Union County community since 1987. Grant applications are available each spring.

Athletic facilities could boost the county’s economy

County commissioners approved rezoning requests for two projects Monday, Oct. 5, that could not only provide area youth a place to play sports, but also give communities an economic development boost.

The Mecklenburg Swim Association will build a 15,000square-foot swim training center at Rea and Tom Short roads in Waxhaw, while Maxwell and Amy Anthony will build the Union Athletic Club on 50 acres of vacant farm land near the Indian Trail-Monroe border.

Both projects overcame pushback from the public, mainly from neighbors worried about their property values.

Union Athletic Club thrives on variety

Amy Anthony, of Weddington, said she noticed a lack of recreational facilities for youth after volunteering and coaching sports at elementary and middle schools.

“Even progressing into high school, there is a shortage,” she said.

Enter Union Athletic Club – a campus next to the Union County Operations Center that will include an indoor football field, track and basketball courts. The center also will feature a restaurant, store to buy supplies and office space for a physical therapist. Additional fields would be located outside.

Anthony sees an opportunity for the complex to host tournaments for teams outside of the community, noting that the closest 300-meter indoor track is in Greensboro – and it’s constantly booked.

Not all residents were in favor of the project, however.

Seneca Mullins, who had lived 12 years in the neighboring Wincrest subdivision, threatened to leave the community during last month’s public hearing if commissioners approved the rezoning request.

The project comes with the risk of noise and light pollution, as well as threatens security and property values, Mullins said.

Following a community meeting, the Anthonys changed the building orientation on the site plan to reduce noise. They also agreed not to exceed 65 decibels for most of the operating day and 55 decibels overnight.

Outdoor lighting would be turned off by 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Compromise reached for swim center

Residents in the Hunter Oaks subdivision acknowledged the need for indoor swimming facilities, but initially spoke out against the Mecklenburg Swim Association’s (MSA) proposal.

Brian Matthews, executive director for the Union County Planning Department, said there was a significant amount of concern for the project, because an old site plan had a 6-foot-tall wall separating a proposed office building from the neighboring homes.

The swim center plan did away with the wall, because it only intended to build on 2.5 of the site’s nine acres.

Following the public hearing on the project, Peter Perers, head coach at MSA, met with neighbors for more than two hours to discuss their concerns.

Perers offered them a chance to select the type of wall to build.

Residents preferred one consisting of vinyl paneling and brick columns, because it would go eight feet high. It will be built no less than 20 feet from the property line.

“I feel like he has made a best faith effort and taken our concerns into consideration,” Hunter Oaks resident Chad Sallee said of Perers.

Stoney Rushing, vice chairman of the county commission, said it was refreshing to see citizens hash out differences to arrive at a compromise.

Since last month’s public hearing, the county has received site plans for a storage facility proposed to open next to the swim cen-

ter. Commissioners will have the option of approving the proposal on the condition that the storage facility continue building the wall across the rest of the 9-acre site, Matthews said.

Recreation could stimulate economy

Vinay Patel, president and CEO of SREE Hotels, described the Union Athletic Club as a great opportunity to inject revenue into the county by attracting visitors.

The idea is to lure visitors to stay at local hotels, eat at local restaurants and shop at local stores.

Union County generated $112.76 million in direct visitor spending and about $2.1 million in local sales tax revenue in 2013, according to statistics prepared for the N.C. Department of Commerce by the U.S. Travel Association. Despite being one of the largest counties in the state, Union ranked 37th in visitor spending.

The towns of Stallings and Indian Trail have joined Matthews and Mint Hill to form the Alliance of South Charlotte Communities, a group designed to market the region for economic development opportunities similar to the Lake Norman towns of Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson.

Those towns have a group, dubbed Visit Lake Norman, that markets recreational amenities along Interstate 77 to tourists.

“Lake Norman has an alliance and it’s very profitable,” said Gordon Daniels, an Indian Trail councilmember who chairs the Alliance of South Charlotte Communities. “The fact that we have the I-485 corridor adds to our value.”

Daniels said the alliance is looking at marketing the towns’ inventory of restaurants, stores, hotels and recreational amenities to potential visitors. The group has been working on its branding.

He also points to Indian Trail councilmember David Drehs’s efforts to bringing Miracle League to Union County.

“Parks and other things can acts as a stimulus to bring other things to town,” Daniels said, noting that, in turn, broadens the tax base.

to go toward emergency and emerging needs at its Oct. 6 meeting.

The BOE has engaged in conversations with the county board of commissioners for a few months to fund critical needs in the county that were not specified on the list of capital projects in Year 1 of the 10-year Community Construction Equity Plan (CCEP), including a new boiler and chiller at Weddington High School and HVAC rooftop units at Monroe Middle School.

BOE members requested the county provide the funding for those needs, but the county rejected the request. They then requested Union County Manager Cynthia Coto authorize a transfer of up to 10 percent of funding of capital funding.

The BOE Facilities Committee recommended at the Oct. 6 meeting for the board to use $2.4 million allocated by county commissioners for “unspecified projects,” according to BOE member Kevin Stewart, who is the facilities committee chair.

The new boiler and rooftop units have already been repaired and installed, and UCPS has already ordered the chiller, but the bills are now due, said Dr. Mike Webb, UCPS deputy superintendent of instructional technology and operations.

The bill for the three emergency issues accounts for approximately $270,000, Webb said, and the remaining money will go toward other “emerging needs” the BOE requested funds for from the county at early board meetings.

“As far as the shuffle of the other items (on the list) that was something in the purvey of the Facilities Committee and will be taken that under advisement and will come back to the board,” he said.

The shift of funds from the capital fund,

not starting as the CCEP indicates, in order to fund immediate district needs.

A project not neglected through the $2.4 million shift includes a new sewer system at New Salem Elementary School, which is currently out of compliance because it doesn’t support the school population.

Webb said the emerging needs list presented to the facilities committee now amounts to about $1.4 million and will continue to grow throughout the year.

Two large projects of emerging needs that might need to be addressed include site work at Benton Heights Elementary School, which will cost a little more than $400,000, and at Indian Trail Elementary School, which will cost about $280,000.

BOE member Gary Sides questioned when the BOE would discuss what items on the emerging needs list would soon be addressed, particularly pending the joint county commission and board of education meeting that has yet to have an established date.

“Emerging needs will be addressed by facilities in due time. We will come back to the board and make a recommendation,” Stewart said to Sides during the Oct. 6 meeting.

The Facilities Committee had not yet determined what emerging needs were next to addressed from the allocated $2.4 million or the first of the capital projects, which included the Benton Heights project and a transfer to IP cameras. The board voted at its September meeting to allocate funds away from those two projects to afford emerging needs.

Sides questioned whether the BOE would wait to transfer any more funds for emerging needs until the joint meeting.

“The remaining emerging needs are in a holding pattern until further notice,” Sides said.

Sun Valley students prepare to blast off with new program

INDIAN TRAIL â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sun Valley High School students want to take their knowledge to infinity and beyond â&#x20AC;Ś or at least help astronauts do so with a new academy at the school.

This year, Sun Valley offers aerospace engineering, a program in partnership with the Advanced Careers with Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), to introduce students to aeronautical or astronautical fields.

The advanced career initiative aims to prepare students, and particularly high-risk students, for high-level education by creating multiple paths to college and careers, according to SREB. The board partners with industry leaders to develop a four-course sequence of study around a career area the state needs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Starting at the freshman level to senior level, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to make sure our students are prepared for an advanced career or future college (career),â&#x20AC;? said Bill Vivian, department chair for career and technical education (CTE) at Sun Valley, who teaches the program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anything like this before. This is huge.â&#x20AC;?

Vivian said UCPS CTE Director Robert Filter helped bring the program to Sun Valley.

The aerospace program is the only one of its kind in North Carolina, according to the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website, which offers a curriculum

with four different semesters of aerospace, aeronautical and astronautics applications.

The level one class offers a focus on 3D software through creating airplane seats, but also includes kite design, propulsion or rockets, wing design and how payloads affect flight.

Approximately 60 students take the class and learn about Newtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second law, lift and drag coefficients and why planes fly, Vivian said.

The studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first project involved designing a pilot seat frame for a corporate jet. The students can design the seat how they desire, but must consider budget, materials, design structure, size and other components.

The project also includes learning Cornell note-taking strategies, citing sources in APA format, presenting their design through an engineering sketch and a CAD design program, keeping an engineering style notebook, testing and improving their design, printing the final project using a 3D printer and an oral presentation using technology for visual aids.

Students had to test their chairs with experiments involving force to develop engineering knowledge.

The students have recently begun a new project developing a kite that can reach 50 to 100 feet in altitude. Vivian said the students will use different software to develop models and create different testing scenarios.

He said even if a student doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pursue a career in aeronautics, they still can use their techniques to go into higher technical jobs in the field, such as at the Charlotte-Douglas

Airport, General Dynamics, and United Technologies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We (also) need more women in the engineering field and this program should help,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Vivian said the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next step is to develop an advisory board for the program consisting of industry leaders to mentor the students in the program.

MONROE – Shiloh Elementary School Principal Scott Spencer has always tried to remain positive and build relationships during his more than 20 years in education.

His devotion to building trust with parents, students Scott Spencer and staff earned him Union County Public School’s 2015-16 Principal of the Year title.

Spencer entered a career in education because of the impact of his teachers and his wife, Kim, who also teaches in UCPS. “I had great teachers growing up that made such a positive impact on me,” Spencer said.

Spencer has a bachelor’s degree from Stonehill College, a master’s degree in education from Lesley University and an educational specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Florida Atlantic University.

He spent 12 years in Palm Beach County as a teacher and administrator and began his UCPS career in 2006. He’s in his fifth year at Shiloh Elementary.

“I love this system. It’s so supportive,” he said.

“We’re a family. I know at any point I can pick up the phone – whether it’s Central Services or the principal next door – I can get help from them.”

Shiloh Elementary is involved in SPLASH, an immersion program in which students will learn core subjects in a foreign language, along with learning the language. Spencer said he’s enjoyed watching the program, which is in its fourth year, grow and how quickly students ac-

Education Briefs UCPS faculty to investigate the local manufacturing industry Union County Public Schools guidance counselors and career development coordinators (CDC) spent time last week touring area manufacturers in an attempt to be informed about manufacturing jobs for students.

The tours were a kickoff to Manufacturing Awareness Week, which ran last week. There were open house events at various local manufacturers and a Manufacturing Awareness Showcase at SPCC on Oct. 1.

Robert Filter, UCPS director of Career and Technical Education (CTE), said about 25 UCPS CDCs and counselors attended the kick-off tours, which were held at two manufacturing companies in Union County: Greiner Bio-One and Vanguard Pai Lung, according to a news release.

Spencer said he’s always tried to make connections with families and focus on relationships as an administrator, which he considers “the heart of the job.”

“You can help people, but you’re going to have to get the relationships down before you can go any further,” he said. “You have to build trust and show them you’re genuinely concerned.”

He acknowledges how teachers often have “a lot on their plates,” particularly regarding standardized testing pressures, which he said, as an administrator, he tries to alleviate.

When he was an instructor, he said he struggled to encourage students to find a love for reading and to read at home. He believes that battle still applies today.

Spencer also believes time can be a challenge for today’s teachers and ensuring they reach all students.

“At the heart of it, they’re still kids. They’re going to get sick,” he said. “We try not to lose sight that we’re dealing with people and live beings … Good teachers want to fit everything in and cover what’s important.”

Spencer advises new principals to “know the leadership you follow” and look at the bigger picture of the school of the history of the school.

“I think it’s important to be respectful of the past, but carve your own place in history at the same time,” he said.

Porter Ridge student named Bank of NC athlete of the month INDIAN TRAIL – Bank of North Carolina awarded Porter Ridge High School senior Sarah Welch with its first student-athlete of the month on Sept. 25.

Sarah was recognized for her academic achievements and accomplishments on the volleyball court, according to a news release.

She is a four-year varsity starter on the volleyball team, leads the team in assists with 262 and has a 4.91 GPA. She also is ranked fifth in her class.

Sarah is president of the Interact Service Club, a member of the National Honor Society and Student Government Associations. She also volunteers at Matthews Medical Center.

Winning over worry and anxiety with prayer

My son once gave me a key ring which said, “Reality is the leading cause of stress.”

Let’s face it. When facing the real world, it is hard not to feel stressed. Feverish anxieties, gnawing worries, stress and tension seem to characterize so much of modern life.

Research has shown that anxiety and stress contribute to heart disease, ulcers, loss of memory, blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, diminished immune function and disturbed sleep patterns. Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental illnesses in the country.

There is a huge industry in sleeping pills, antidepressants and minor tranquilizers to help people cope. But experts are by no means agreed as to the cure for worry and anxiety. Is there such a cure? Is it possible to win over worry?

Think of it this way. When you have a problem, you go to someone who can take care of it. So if you have a health problem, you go to your doctor. If you have a legal problem, you go to your attorney. You take your problem to them, and act on their advice (and pay their bill). You give them your problem, and then trust them to take care of it. Now imagine taking all your problems, worries, and anxieties to someone who is all-powerful and all-loving. There is such a person. The apostle Peter writes, “Cast all your anxieties on Him (God) because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

A few summers ago my wife, Gudny, and I were walking along beautiful Wrightsville Beach and saw a little toddler.

One of his little chubby hands was in the hand of his father, who was a very powerfully built young man (I tried to push out my chest as I was walking past). The wee boy’s other hand was in his mother’s hand. She had a very sweet and loving face. They were obviously delighted to be at the

beach and were enjoying leading their son into the ocean possibly for the first time. It was a delightful picture until I looked at the child’s face. His lip was trembling, his face was puckered, and he was about to cry. He wasn’t looking at his very strong father. He wasn’t looking at his very loving mother. He was staring at the waves of the ocean, which, from his perspective, must Pastor John H. Munro have seemed very big, very noisy and very foreboding. Did he really think that his powerful father and loving mother would let him drown? Did he really think that they would let anything harm him? Never. They wanted him to enjoy the wonder of the warm and exciting ocean. They were leading him into a new adventure. What was he fretting about? His eyes were on the sea rather than on his mom and dad who certainly could be trusted.

Are you presently facing deep waters and huge waves? Is your life very difficult, full of perilous and seemingly insuperable obstacles? Here is the challenge: don’t focus on the waves; don’t be anxious at the size of your problems. Focus on God, and bring all of your cares and worries to Him. He is all-powerful. He can do all things. No problem is too great for Him. He is the God who can move mountains. He is also a God who loves you, and knows you.

Cast all your cares on the all-powerful and all-loving God. He really cares for you. He loves you. So bring all of your cares to the Lord in prayer. And trust the God who can do the impossible.

Residents to address Cureton WAXHAW – After looking at plans recently resubmitted by developers near the Cureton subdivision, Candace Definis says residents are “gearing up to fight and fight big.”

Cureton residents were opposed to a proposed development across the street from the Shoppes at Howards Mill consisting of a convenience store with a car wash, an automotive repair shop and retail building.

Definis said updated plans replace the automotive repair shop with a restaurant, but a gas station remains.

Town commissioners could hold a public hearing on the project Oct. 13, which might set the stage for an Oct. 27 vote.

Definis said residents want to protect the town from an overabundance of gas stations and chain stores.

This is the biggest game in coach Aubrey Carter’s young tenure with the Mavericks. It’s equally significant for both teams in terms of the race for the SCC crown and building on their postseason resumes.

David Johnson and his staff have had two weeks to get the Cavaliers healthy after being down 13 starters, including quarterback Austin Kendall in their 31-7 loss to Monroe.

This should be a high-scoring affair, but it’ll be tough for Cuthbertson without Kendall taking the snaps.

Talk about a clash in styles that will make for an exciting showdown. Both teams have big-play offenses, but take very different approaches. Coach Tad Baucom and the Spartans like to spread defenses out with freshman phenom Sam Howell at quarterback slinging the ball around to a bevy of talented receivers.

Coach Luke Hyatt and the Panthers like lull defenses to sleep with their misdirection and grinding runs, then hit them with a homerun from running back Khris Missick, who is fresh off a 227-yard and three touchdown performance.

Monroe at CATA Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cougars had their fun with a 4-0 start, but were brought back down to earth with a 35-0 loss at Piedmont.

Monroe is even better than the Panthers, and coach Johnny Sowell is excited about his team’s potential.

The Redhawks have four players who have rushed for more than 200 yards this season. Defensively, Monroe is feasting on opponent’s quarterbacks with an average of 5.8 sacks per game. Junior defensive end/outside linebacker Miquille Bryant is on a tear with 11 sacks thus far. CATA’s offensive line has a major task on its hands.

Warriors tennis in driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seat for Southern Carolinas

Records can be deceiving.

Weddington girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tennis team (6-5) beat Marvin Ridge to emerge above .500; however, the Warriors, who have been dominant against Southern Carolinas Conference competition this season, improved to 5-0 in league play when it beat Marvin Ridge, 5-4, Thursday, Oct. 1 in a match that carried over from Sept.

21.

Coach Mike Murphy, who is in his 10th year at the helm, challenged his team with a difficult nonconference slate that featured the likes of Charlotte Latin, Lake Norman Charter, Charlotte Catholic and Ardrey Kell.

The early obstacles will serve the Warriors well in the long run.

Murphy said this team has the potential to be one of the top two or three teams heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever coached. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we can get everything together I think us and Marvin Ridge are both in contention for the western half of the state, and now that Cardinal Gibbons has moved up to 4A thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good possibility we could compete for the state,â&#x20AC;? Murphy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out of the question. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were there two years ago, and the team we have now is a little better than that team.

We played Gibbons and lost. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good chance whoever comes out of the Weddington, Marvin Ridge has a good chance to go to

the state championship in Burlington.â&#x20AC;?

The Warriors, who are a senior-laden group with rock solid veteran leadership, have two underclassmen in playing in its top two positions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; junior Morgan Valentine and freshman Sarah Merrill, and that gives Murphy good experience and quality youth to work with.

Valentine and Merrill are undefeated in singles match play, giving Weddington sources of consistency for the Warriors to depend on.

A highlight of Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s was beating talented Marvin Ridge player Ella Imhof, while Merrill defeated Marvin Ridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rachel Zubrinsky and Lake Norman Charterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hannah Archer.

Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focus helps her to lock in and play at a high level, which is complemented by a lethal backhand shot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m down Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty good at coming back,â&#x20AC;? Valentine said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot matches I start down, and then I make my way through it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I pull out some really hard matches, so I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contributed to some of the wins. I think I fight through all my matches. I try my best and try to grind through every play and stick with it.â&#x20AC;?

Weddingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s victory over Marvin Ridge means the most to Merrill, because she had to come back to win the doubles match.

She said her consistency gives her an edge in match play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a lot more consistent than most of the girls I play,â&#x20AC;? Merrill said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I keep a lot of spin on my balls. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really hit it flat, so most of

my balls stay in.â&#x20AC;?

She added her forehand and coming in to the net are some other strengths in her repertoire.

Murphy said they are both competitive.

Combine that with the veteran experience in spots two through six, and the Warriors are a formidable bunch.

Murphy said his teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest strides have come in doubles, but still sees room for improvement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to get comfortable with the doubles pairings, and playing the big points better,â&#x20AC;?

Murphy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a lot of close matches with Marvin and some of the schools too we played where one point or another might have flipped it around. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always looking for an advantage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Against Marvin we split our No. 1 and No. 2 players and paired them with two of the seniors. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always looking to see till the end of the year to see what you can do to improve.

While we had success the first time, sometimes you may need to make adjustments as you. If we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have success Thursday we may have to look at something different.â&#x20AC;?

He added he is always open to lineup changes, but said the singles lineup is pretty well set.

The Warriors arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t resting in the lead, because they know thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business left to take care of. However, Weddington sits atop the SCC standings, and will win the conference outright with victories over Marvin Ridge Thursday, Oct. 8.
