Proposal could aid Union County’s home-based businesses

WAXHAW – Joel and Teresa Barbee have operated a contracting company from their Waxhaw home since 1988, but worry Union County ordinances could threaten their livelihood.

Teresa Barbee recognizes small businesses are operating in a culture in which they are worried the government isn’t on their side.

“We’re scared to death,” she said. “We just want to operate our business and pay our taxes.”

The county recently investigated complaints made against the Barbees and another home-based business and found they were operating outside the requirements set by the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), according to Brian Matthews, executive director for Union County’s planning department.

The UDO sets parameters on the types of businesses that can be housed at residential properties, as well as the number of employees allowed.

The Barbees don’t store concrete or materials on their property, but have stored trailers and Bobcat equipment there, on the advice of their insurance company, after equipment was stolen from job sites.

Hagerman, who says his property doesn’t exude the look of a business, helped craft the text amendment.

The Union County Planning Board supports the amendment, recommending a provision be added that calls for home-based businesses to not adversely affect the character of surrounding neighbors or create a nuisance.

Planning board members and staff felt larger tracts of property are conductive to operating certain types of businesses, Matthews said. They chose five acres arbitrarily.

“This was not an easy matter for the planning board or the staff but we recognized small businesses are certainly the backbone of the country,” Matthews said. “We also recognize that adjacent proper owners do have some rights to protection of their property, as well.”

No one spoke against the proposed text amendment during an Oct. 5 public hearing.

County commissioners could consider the proposal during their Oct. 19 meeting.

“You hear great stories about people starting businesses in their garages,” Commissioner Stony Rushing said. “I think Apple computers may have been started in a garage.

I’d hate to stifle some of that.”

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, There’s a great deal of misinformation being spread about Weddington’s fire service. Sadly, political candidates closely connected with PVFD are creating controversy around the town's decision to ask WCFD take over fire service. Their political agenda creates a false sense of chaos and conspiracy in an effort to gain attention and sway votes.

I live in Weddington, raise kids, coach and vote here, but that doesn’t qualify me, or any citizen, to make decisions about who should provide fire service. What qualifies me? I am an experienced firefighter who understands what it takes to protect your family. Do you really want town officials taking advice from your Facebook friends on operational decision-making for your fire, police or military protection?

Some simple facts that have been lost: • The only way to avoid a significant tax increase was for WCFD to manage all fire service because PVFD wouldn't merge.

• WCFD was requested because over the last 40 years, WCFD has covered 70 percent of homes in Weddington and responded to more calls than PVFD. • The Hemby Road Fire Station never closed and is staffed 24/7 by WCFD. • County 911 data proves response times are significantly better since WCFD took over.

• WCFD has a better Fire Service Model that incorporates more stations, personnel, apparatus and volunteers who live in our community.

• WCFD sent correspondence to PVFD leaders stating their firefighters could keep their jobs, but they never told them.

• If the PVFD really cared about Weddington and our tax dollars, why are they pushing a lawsuit against us and why did they relocate all PVFD fire trucks to departments outside of Weddington?

Regardless of what brought us to this point, it’s undeniable that the Fire Service Model that WCFD has brought Weddington exceeds the PVFD model and will cost citizens less. The simple question (for council candidates) is – which model will you support if elected?

I was slow picking up on the speed and magnitude of the changes happening earlier this year. When I started asking questions, I was told to do my homework. I have, and I'm supporting Pamela Hadley for mayor. This election isn't about fire service. It's about trust, transparency and respect for citizens/taxpayers. It's about acknowledging we have a voice in decisions affecting our finances and property. Pam gets it.

We won't always agree and that's OK. I know Pam will respectfully hear me out and honestly answer my questions. In the end, the wishes of the majority will win out. It's time to put this ugly chapter in town history behind us and focus on the future. Pam can make that happen.

Dear Editor, This letter is addressed to the coward who posted the anonymous campaign sign at the southwest corner of Old Monroe and Wesley Chapel roads in Indian Trail. You are an embarrassment to our town and disrespectful to all the brave men and women who fought and continue to fight for our right to vote in an open, free democratic society.

If you can’t stand behind your written negative thoughts then keep them to yourself.

Cathi Higgins Indian Trail Dear Editor, Having served as mayor of Stallings for eight years, I understand the skills and qualities needed to be an effective public servant.

Service is the most fundamental concept. Pam Hadley, a current candidate for mayor of Weddington, is a tireless public servant. As a councilmember, she has demonstrated time and again that she has the persistent energy and determination to research issues before council to gain thorough and complete knowledge before reaching a decision. Importantly, she is guided by the will of the people, seeking opinions from citizens in the grocery store or on the street. She seeks out experts in the field and consults with resources such as the School of Government to acquire objective information when needed. She has the ability to conduct objective analyses of facts and figures and exercises prudent judgment of essential information to insure the best decision.

Pam is a strong advocate for transparent government. She insists that town business be conducted in open meetings where citizens can know all that is happening. She works effectively with staff and other officials at the town, county, and state level, but she has the courage to stand alone and speak out to protect the interests of her constituents when necessary.

Pam is a woman of impeccable character who has earned the trust and confidence of many in Weddington and beyond. If I lived in Weddington, she would get my vote.

Lynda Paxton Former mayor of Stallings 2005-13 Dear Editor, Being born and reared in Waxhaw my entire life, I have seen this town evolve from a sleepy little, quiet village to a bustling hectic town of bottlenecked traffic throughout the day. Having been in the thick of things all my life, I kept up with the local government and those coming into town, as well as those leaving. I can tell you who I know is qualified to be serving on the town council. That person is Brenda Stewart.

She has been involved in some way for the past 20-plus years. She bought the old Presbyterian Manse, which has been a "restoration in progress" during that period, while rearing her sons and working full time at the American Red Cross, and later at BGEA in Charlotte.

She is more than qualified and is very aware of the issues facing this town, i.e., traffic, encroaching development, infrastructure, as well as decisions concerning overwhelming growth.

Brenda will listen to "We The People" and represent us accordingly. A vote for Brenda Stewart as our representative on the town council will be a move forward while respecting and remembering the past.

How has the initiative grown over the past three years?

Community Gabriella DeTomaso launched Boo Bash, a Halloween party for individuals with special needs, three years ago. This year’s event will take place Oct. 24, a Saturday, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Ms. DeeDee’s AfterGabriella DeTomaso school Care, located at 6810 Creft Circle in Lake Park. Tell us a little about the Boo Bash.

Boo Bash is a Halloween party for individuals with special needs. During Boo Bash every child and young adult are invited to dress up, eat delicious food and treats, and dance the night away.

Boo Bash has been able to grow over the years by word of mouth from the families, and the ability to use social media to reach many families that may be far away.

What's the most fulfilling thing about participating in Boo Bash?

For me, the most fulfilling part about Boo Bash is seeing the smiling faces of the party members. Being able to bring joy to each person is a blessing I hope to share for many more years to come.

Do you have a favorite Boo Bash-related memory?

A favorite Boo Bash memory for me would have to be dancing on the dance floor. Some individuals are nonverbal, so being able to connect through the movement of dance is a beautiful thing.

What was your inspiration for becoming involved in the program?

I started Boo Bash three years ago. I have always wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, and Boo Bash, for me, is a way to give back to the special needs community,

Backyard Birds to donate funds to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue INDIAN TRAIL – Backyard Birds in Matthews will hold a “Don’t be Chicken” fundraiser on Oct. 24, a Saturday, to benefit local nonprofit Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. The Halloweenthemed fundraiser will feature rescued chickens dressed in costumes.

Backyard Birds, located at 1819 Matthews Township Pkwy., will donate 10 percent of each sale from 9 a.m. to noon to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.

‘Daughter of the King’ musical to benefit Indian Trail nonprofit INDIAN TRAIL – Songwriter and playwright S. Kristi Douglas’s musical “Daughter of the King” will be performed on Oct. 24, a Saturday, at Central Piedmont Community College’s Pease Auditorium. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit new Indian Trail nonprofit She Reigns Ministries, which supports women in crisis and transition.

The musical tells the story of the King sisters, an unexpected encounter with a stranger and a secret that changes everything they know about life. Song selections will be a mix of jazz, R&B, Latin and gospel.

Lake Park holds candidate forum LAKE PARK – The village of Lake Park will hold a candidate forum for interested residents on Oct. 22, a Thursday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Central Academy at Lake Park. The League of Women Voters will moderate the event.

The days are shorter, the weather’s cooler and families across the area are preparing to enjoy the festivities of fall – pumpkin carving, corn mazes, haunted trails and, of course, Halloween.

Family-friendly fall festivals Lake Park to host movie night and fall festival on Oct. 16, 17 LAKE PARK – The community is invited to a free movie night in Lake Park on Friday, Oct. 16. The village will show “Casper” at dusk in Town Center Park.

The 25th annual Lake Park Festival will take place at the park on Saturday, Oct. 17, and feature rides, games, vendors, food, crafts and professional services.

Halloween Haunts in Monroe

Holy Ghost Hayride in Monroe

MONROE – Downtown Monroe will host a Halloween Happenings festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Main Street.

The event will include treats and prizes for all attendees, craft activities, a bull ride, giant inflatables, a petting zoo and more. Activities are free, and a costume contest will take place at noon, with registration from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

MONROE – This outdoor theater event, now in its 17th year, features 18 different stops with hundreds of individual actors and actresses portraying various scenes from the Bible. “…While each of the scenes portray actual Biblical events as outlined in the scripture, there are even moments that offer thrills available only in theme park rides and such as those rivaling most haunted house events,” read the event website.

The Holy Ghost Hayride will run Oct. 16, 17, 23 and 24 from 7 to 10 p.m. each night.

Rides depart every 10 minutes. Tickets cost $8 per person, with free admission for kids 5 years old and younger. Snacks, drinks and other carnival games and activities will be available during hours of operation.

Indian Trail’s Candy Crawl INDIAN TRAIL – The town of Indian Trail will host a Halloween Candy Crawl on Oct. 23, a Friday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Chestnut Square Park.

The event will include a trunk or treat for kids 12 years old and younger from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with last admittance at 6:30 p.m. A costume contest and parade also will take place at the event, with lineup at 6:45 p.m. and winners announced at 7 p.m.

Spooky thrills The 13th Acre Haunted Trail MONROE – This October, Aw Shucks!

Farm’s haunted trail, The 13th Acre, promises to offer visitors “the scariest year yet for The 13th Acre that will send you running for the exit,” according to its website.

The 13th Acre is open every Friday and Saturday in October from dusk until 11:30

p.m. The last ticket for each night will be sold at 11 p.m. Tickets for The 13th Acre cost $11 each. A combination package also is available for $18, which includes admission to the Aw Shucks! Farms activities, in addition to the haunted trail.

The 13th Acre guides participants along haunted walk through the woods. Flashlights, flash photography and videotaping aren’t permitted, and wearing flip-flops is discouraged.

Ghost Tour of Matthews MATTHEWS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Matthews Heritage Museum will host the Ghost Tour of Downtown Matthews at two times next weekend.

Dear Editor, Business Development in Indian Trail: If you follow Indian Trail politics in this election year, you would think that the town is on the verge of rack and ruin. Some people running in this election are running on anti-business platform, which in my opinion, is a failed strategy. Government leadership needs individuals that embrace positive change.

I am working with candidates Pam DeMaria, Tiffany McGee, and Tripp Melton, who are of like mind and who support businesses and responsible development. Like me, they seek to protect your tax dollar and focus on finding solutions to our problems.

We need to welcome, and work with, entrepreneurs and investors to bring new businesses to our town. These businesses not only create jobs, but also pay commercial taxes, which currently account for 22 percent of all tax revenues. I want to be the mayor that increases that amount taking pressure off any future need to raise residential taxes. Businesses create jobs and the taxes they generate help pay for road improvements, public safety, and keep us fiscally strong.

If elected, I will work with council and town manager to attract more enterprises that contribute to the tax base of the town and help the town maintain low residential taxes. I will support the review and modernization of our ordinances to make it easier for businesses to operate while protecting the public health, safety, morals, and general welfare of the residents of Indian Trail.

My home is Indian Trail; I am proud of Indian Trail. I will work tirelessly to make this community a great place to live and work, a family community welcoming to all, one of which we can all be proud.

www.unioncountyweekly.com Dear Editor, Even though I live in Cornelius, I follow Indian Trail politics closely. I find myself spending lots of time trying to understand things said about my dad.

Some of it makes no sense, i.e. my father supported a 27-percent tax increase? Dad, what’s that about? Ask him and he’ll tell you. It’ll make complete sense.

I’m invested in the town because my dad is. I support his campaign because it’s time I give back to someone whose entire life has been dedicated to serving others. I see how passionate he is about making the town better. I sometimes wish he’d step away, but who am I kidding? When this man decides to devote himself to something, he’s all in. For example, he devoted thousands of hours to youth sports South Park Youth Association (SPYA). When he wasn’t working he was coaching kids, picking underprivileged kids up so they could participate, worked on fields to ensure they were in pristine condition, spent time at SPYA meetings and signups. Anyone at SPYA in the 80s and 90s knows my dad. He was a servant to kids, their parents and youth sports. His impact on players is apparent today in how they still keep in touch with him almost 30 years later. My dad made SPYA better.

He’s since moved his passion to Indian Trail. The purpose of my letter is to help the town understand my father better. Like most people, I want to know the truth and want to support a candidate that’s trustworthy. He’s the most honest man I know and he wants what’s best for everyone. He’s a stronghearted man and is not swayed by others. He’s open-minded, he’ll listen and he’ll give his opinion.

I can’t tell you if he’s been right about everything on council. I can’t tell you if all his decisions have worked out. What I can tell you is he does what he thinks is right for the town and people of the town.

Indian Trail should be proud to him have him. I’m proud to have David Cohn as my dad.

INDIAN TRAIL – As Indian Trail prepares to break ground on a town hall this fall, challengers in the town council election are using the $8-million structure to gain more of a political foothold.

Like many towns in the Charlotte region, Indian Trail is experiencing rapid growth. Its population has exploded to more than 35,000 people, increasing the urgency of improving its road network and evaluating whether incoming development projects adversely affect neighboring communities.

Yet, the town hall represents a fundamental issue in this election: Are those elected truly representing the voice of the people?

Voters will pick three names among the 11 listed on the Nov. 3 ballot. Several of the challengers are using the town council’s decision in August to move forward on a town hall to better connect with voters.

They say the people’s voices weren’t heard when the council voted 4-1 in August to approve a two-story, 19,9000-square-foot municipal complex across from Chestnut Square Park. It will house a town hall and community center.

David Cohn was that one dissenting vote.

He’s been advocating all year for the council to put the item on the November ballot for the community to decide.

Following a March public hearing on the

town hall, Cohn made a motion to approve a referendum asking residents if they wanted to build an $8.5-million complex. Gordon Daniels, David Drehs and Gary Savoie voted against the measure. Chris King was not in attendance.

Cohn told Union County Weekly that he’s talked to many residents and believes that 80 to 90 percent of them were against the council approving a town hall without gauging their interest first.

“The people feel cheated,” Cohn said.

Mark Wireman was among them. He launched a petition on Change.org, calling for the council to put the project on a referendum.

The petition had 182 signatures.

Following the town council vote, Wireman criticized members for serving their own interests and lacking “respect, integrity and ethics.”

“As a result of the behavior of the council over the past several yeas, I have decided to run to bring the town back to the people.” Wireman said.

Wireman called on voters not to re-elect King and Drehs, while also putting support behind incumbent Cohn, Amy Stanton and Gary Evans (who is no longer actively campaigning).

Michael Faulkenberry believes the issue should have gone before the public, but he says the need for residents and business owners to have more of a voice in Indian Trail extends well beyond town hall.

Faulkenberry cited an apartment complex

approved last year near downtown despite a petition from residents.

But Daniels, who is not up for re-election for another two years, contends the community had a voice regarding town hall.

Residents had the option of speaking during the public comments portion of any meeting, he said. They also were given the opportunity to speak during multiple public hearings prior to the vote.

The issue also has been appearing on council meeting agendas since 2002. It’s popped up annually, until the town bought the Blythe building as a temporary town hall in 2007.

The town has since outgrown that building. Not only will the new municipal complex house staff and provide meeting space for the community, but it will also tie in with downtown redevelopment efforts.

The town will pay for the $7.98 million project through its Capital Reserve & Debt Reduction Fund, designed to support infrastructure projects. About $600,000 would be available annually for such needs.

Town Manager Joe Fivas told the council in August that moving now on the town hall ensured the project could lock into a 2.51 percent annual interest rate for 15 years.

“The cost of such a project would only have increased if we waited much longer to move forward,” Fivas said at the time. “We have a need in the community today for such a project.”

anticipate raising taxes to support the project.

Cohn and Mayor Michael Alvarez have publicly disputed that.

Daniels believes it’s insensitive and irresponsible for council members to say the town hall will result in higher taxes, considering they approved a budget in June that accounted for it and didn’t raise taxes.

“It’s a shame, because you have some people who want things to fail,” Daniels said. “They want things to fail for one reason – to say I told you so.”

Original site plans called for there to be connections via Brookgreen Terrace and April Lane.

The Stallings Planning Board recommended approval of the project with 15 conditions, including that connectivity to Fairfield Plantation be limited to April Lane. The board also called for a speed bump on April Lane.

The Stallings Town Council approved the project 4-2 at last month’s meeting. Council members Rocky Crenshaw and Shawna Steele opposed the proposal.

The density of the new development will consist of two homes per acre, which could potentially add anywhere from 111 to 226 children to the school district, depending on the enrollment study.

Davis earns UCPS Assistant Principal title

Parkwood Assistant Principal Brian Davis grew up on a farm, watching his father teach agriculture for 30 years in the Union County Public Schools system. It only seemed fitting for him to follow in his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footsteps and work with students.

Years later, Davisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard work and leadership have earned him the title of UCPS Assistant Principal of the Year.

Davis earned his bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in animal science from North Carolina State University and began working as an agriculture teacher, like his father. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got to see what he did. He worked with a lot of students and I saw the impact he made on them,â&#x20AC;? Davis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I realized I can have an impact doing that too.â&#x20AC;?

Davis has worked in UCPS for 15 years, beginning his career at Sun Valley High School, then moving to Weddington High School once it opened in 2000. As an agriculture teacher, he taught animal science, horticulture, equine science and landscaping. He also has worked with Future Farmers of America. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been fortunate to work at multiple schools in the system and I was able to get to the core values that makes you a great educator,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Davis believes his teaching success comes from his motivation to help all students excel, no matter who the student is or his background, and to build relationships with students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I treat the students fairly and show that I

care and I want them to be successful,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;Ś The most rewarding thing is when my former students grow up to be successful adults.â&#x20AC;?

Davis has a passion for teaching, but felt he held qualities that could help students in the administrative sector. He always Brian Davis taught leadership courses, but soon found he wanted to pursue it as well.

Davis has served as assistant principal at Monroe and Weddington high schools before his tenure at Parkwood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I never realize the impact that you can have outside you little box as an administrator,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All the things a school administrator has juggle, so many thing that pull you with all the stakeholders.â&#x20AC;?

Davis feels the biggest challenge in education is the perception of public education and UCPS. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize how good the teachers in UCPS are, and the time they put into their students,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wish people could see all the things teachers do to make sure their students are successful or move to the next level.â&#x20AC;?

He encourages new assistant principals not to be afraid to ask questions and to â&#x20AC;&#x153;be ready to work.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every day you go to school, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to make an impact on a young person and that impact will be lifelong,â&#x20AC;? Davis said.

UCPS honored by state for grad rate

Union County Public Schools was one of 11 school districts honored by the state for the highest four-year cohort graduation rates for the 2014-15 school year.

UCPS was ranked fifth in the Top 10 districts in the state, with a graduation rate of 93.2, and held the highest graduation rate for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;largeâ&#x20AC;? school districts, with a cohort of 2,963 students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Largeâ&#x20AC;? school districts are represented as school districts with more than 2,000 students in their cohorts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am so proud of the teachers, school counselors, coaches, principals and district leaders, and others who have worked tirelessly to make sure more students are graduating from North Carolinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public schools than ever before. Their dedication and tenacity enabled the state to reach the all-time high graduation rate of 85.6 in 2014-15,â&#x20AC;? said State Superintendent June Atkinson in a news release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As we honor the schools and districts that do an exceptional job keeping students in school and on track for graduation, I am hopeful that these award winners will continue to share best practices and serve as models for districts and schools across the state.â&#x20AC;?

Union County Early College, with a 63-student cohort, and Central Academy of Technology & Arts, with a 209student cohort, were recognized.

Other UCPS schools also were recognized for their graduation rates based on the size of their school districts.

Weddington and Marvin Ridge high schools were recognized in the 300 to 399 students category with graduation rates with 99.7 and 99.5, respectively.

UCPS schools recognized as global education leaders

Union County Public Schools has a strong focus on globalization and 49 county schools were recognized for bringing global education effectively to the classroom.

The UCPS Global Schools Program began six years ago, with the hope of helping students learn about the world around them.

Schools are rated in one of five categories depending on points earned through levels of participation, ranging from “Global Education” to “International Schools.”

Fifteen schools were classified as International Schools, the top tier, and 12 as Global Partners, the second tiers.

“Participating in the Global Schools Program is important because it shows our schools’ commitment in connecting our students to the world,” Cuthbertson High School principal Dr. Kim Schroeder said in a news release. “We are able to document our school's growth each year through the process as we work toward infusing globalization into the curriculum.”

Cuthbertson has been considered an International School throughout the six years of the program’s existence. Schools document how they infuse globalization into the curriculum, such as global events and lessons. The system’s Global Education Committee scores those portfolios and schools earn “points” based on how they implement the programs.

Dr. Tom Bulla, UCPS director of human resources operations, reported on Oct. 6 the district’s SPLASH and immersion programs “have been going very well,” serving 570 students, who are learning either Spanish or Mandarin in the programs.

The three inaugural SPLASH programs have matriculated into third grade and the newest schools, which began last year, have kindergarten and first grade programs.

Kensington Elementary, which as a SPLASH program, also has maintained International School status since the program’s launch.

Kensington Principal Dr. Rachel Clarke believes global education is important for young children.

UCPS teacher turnover higher than state, increasing

The number of teachers leaving Union County Public Schools and North Carolina public schools increased from last year, according to a report by the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

In UCPS, the teacher turnover rate was 15.27 percent in 2013-14, but increased slightly to 15.62 percent, or 401 teachers, in 2014-15, according to the 2014-15 Annual Report on Teachers Leaving the Profession. The state turnover rate increased from 14.12 percent in 2013-14 to 14.84 percent, or 14,255 teachers, in 2014-15.

“In the past five years, the state’s teacher turnover rate has increased in all but one year (2013-14). We won’t reverse this trend until we address the root causes of why teachers leave the classroom,” State Superintendent June Atkinson said in a news release.

The highest district turnover rate in the state was Northampton County with a 33.55-percent rate and the lowest was Graham County with a 5.75percent rate.

The Top 5 self-reported reasons for turnover for 2014-15 included: to teach in another state public school district; retired with full benefits; family relocation; to teach in another state; and career change.

Approximately 4,492 teachers throughout the state, or 31 percent of respondents, reported they left their district, but remained in education, according to DPI. Forty percent of respondents stated they left their school district for “personal reasons,” such as a career change or dissatisfaction

with teaching, family circumstances, health issues, to teach in another state or decided to retire with reduced benefits.

UCPS Superintendent Mary Ellis expressed concern over the state potentially adding more teachers to the district during the summer because she had trouble filling the open positions at the time. The state did not add more teachers, but attracting new teachers to the district could prove to be a problem with North Carolina’s teacher salary still uncompetitive.

State legislators may need to pay attention to the number of teachers leave the state to ensure classroom sizes stay small and new teachers can fill retired teacher’s positions.

The state Board of Education and DPI have various initiatives in place to help recruit and retain teachers, including alternative entry licensure routes, or lateral entry; beginning teacher support programs; 12 percent pay increases for National Board Certification and Troops to Teachers.

Twenty-eight nonprofit boards submitted applications to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in hopes of opening in August 2017.

One school, Union Leadership Academy, applied to open in Union County. The North Carolina Office of Charter Schools reported the school plans to open for kindergarten through fifth-grade students for its first year, if approved, with a year one projected enrollment of 578 students. The school plans to encompass kindergarten through eighth grades. The school also plans to contract with a charter management organization or education management organization.

"Charter schools provide parents with an additional public school choice so that they can determine the best fit to support their child’s learning," State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson said in a news release.

Sept. 25 was the deadline to submit applications, pay a $1,000 application fee and perform criminal background checks on its proposed board members, along with a detailed description of its proposed school’s mission and a plan for the school.

The Office of Charter Schools will review the applications for completeness before forwarding them to the advisory board. The board will use an established structure, including external evaluators and applicant interviews, to review the applications, according to the release, and will recommend applicants to the State Board of Education for approval.

North Carolina holds approximately 160 public charter schools with an additional 16 schools with a favorable report to open in August 2016.

MONROE – Union Academy Charter School announced band director and teacher Steven Stevens as the school’s 2015-16 Teacher of the Year (TOY).

The TOY is chosen through staff nominations and scored on interviews and classroom observaSteven Stevens tions.

Stevens became the director in January 2014 and has doubled the size of the band, earning multiple awards. He also founded the school’s marching band.

“The band students at Union Academy are the best students in the world. They are the true achievers and the ones that deserves the accolades,” Stevens said in the news release.

Stevens was awarded the Young Band Directors Award of Excellence by the South Central District of the North Carolina Band

Masters Association in January 2015 and the Edgar Rooker Award of Excellence by the North Carolina Band Masters Association in May 2015.

“We love Mr. Stevens’ enthusiasm, his organization, and his dedication to not only his teaching but also to his extracurricular activities working with band students. He is an outstanding person and teacher. We are proud that he is the Union Academy Teacher of the Year,” Headmaster Dr. Ann Walters said in the release.

Stevens will advance to the state competition later this month.

Improvement plans now out for review on schools’ websites Dr. John Jones, Jr. assistant superintendent of instructional programs, and Dr. Laurel Healy, director of middle school education and staff development announced at the Oct. 6 Union County Board of Education meeting that school improvement plans are available on schools’ websites.

School improvement plans seek to address specific school needs and set goals for the school.

Healy has headed the effort and has worked with schools to coach leaders.

UCPS is in a “tweak year,” or the second of the two-year plans.

District staff has already begun working with schools to tweak the schools’ goals through multi-tiered “success training,” Principals also will engage in peer reviews of each other’s plans.

Board of Education members will review the schools’ plan on their respective websites and at the Nov. 5 meeting will decide on the plans.

BOE approves apparel contract The Union County Board of Education approved a four-year contract with BSN Sports for athletic apparel and equipment.

Dr. Mike Webb, UCPS deputy superintendent of instructional technology and operations, said the district would bulk purchase athletic equipment and apparel to save costs with an already tight athletic budget.

Webb said in the past using a contracted service has saved schools thousands of dollars that has gone back to the school.

He did not have a specific cost for the contract because the cost would depend on school purchases.

The board unanimously approved the contact at its Oct. 6 meeting.

FARE encourages parents to have an allergy-free Halloween Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) encourages families to participate in a new Halloween tradition: The Teal Pumpkin Project.

The campaign encourages parents to offer non-food treats for children with food allergies. Participants will mark their intent by placing a teal-colored pumpkin in their yard, informing trick-or-treaters they have nonfood Halloween handouts, according to a news release.

For the 6 million children with food allergies, collecting candy can be dangerous.

Families can offer action figures or small toys to trick-or-treaters to ensure children with allergies stay safe.

We celebrate a guy who wouldn’t ask for directions

Who am I referring to? It’s none other than Christopher Columbus. He calculated a short cut to the East Indies by sailing westward. The problem was, he should have gone left out of port instead of going straight. While he did discover America, he didn’t reach his intended destination.

Before the days of GPS, we men would get lost. We would drive past the same gas station Rev. Tony Marciano over and over. Our wife and kids recognized the landmark having seen it three times in the last hour. We got upset when we were asked to stop and ask for directions. We knew if we just kept driving, we’d eventually reach our destination. Did we ever really reach our destination? Yes, sometimes. It was only when we stopped for gas and my wife ran inside the store that we got directions.

One time, I got lost while camping at Myrtle Beach State Park. It was 2 a.m. It was dark outside. I opened the tent to walk to the bathhouse. They had signs showing you how to get there. They did not have signs to show me how to get back to my tent site. I walked out of the bathhouse and got turned around. I started walking in what I thought was the direction to our campsite.

After 10 minutes, I was totally lost. The campground is designed in loops. I kept circling and circling for what should have been five minutes. It turned into more than

90 minutes of wandering. It was 3:30 a.m. and I still couldn’t find our tent site. I prayed a quick prayer and told God if I couldn’t find it in the next few moments, I would lie down beside a tree and sleep there for the rest of the night, waiting for daybreak. Fortunately, a few moments later, I found our tent.

We don’t like to ask for help. We see it as a sign of weakness. It’s our American rugged individualism that says, “Look at what I achieved.” I did it all by myself. We puff out our chest and look at our accomplishments.

What gets in our way is our ego. As Frank Sinatra sang, “I did it my way” and might I add – “without asking for anyone’s help.” If we do ask for help, we come across as weak. No one wants to appear weak. We want to be strong. We don’t ask for help so instead we go the wrong direction.

How do we get to the point where we are willing to ask for help?

Take your hand and hold it in front of you, palm up.

What do you see? You say, “A hand.” Good answer. What else do you see? Sometimes when I do this someone will say, “Dirt?” OK, but what else do you see? Finally, you say, “Nothing. I have nothing in my hand.” I reply, “That’s what God has been waiting for you to say. He wants you to come to him with nothing in your hand but the brokenness of your life and give it to Him. He will take that empty hand and give your life a direction you never dreamed possible.”

I am grateful for my GPS. It gets me from point A to point B. Be assured if it fails to work, don’t worry, I won’t stop and ask for directions. I’ll fire up my iPhone GPS. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just keep driving. Why? I’m a guy.

‘Blues, Brews and BBQ’ coming to Stallings Park

STALLINGS – Area residents looking for food, drinks and music can find all three this weekend at Stallings Municipal Park during the inaugural “Stallings Fall BBQ Cook-Off: Blues, Brews, and BBQ.” The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 17, from 3 to 9 p.m. at the park, located at 340 Stallings Road. Six local cooks will participate in the barbecue cook-off, with two participants doubling as food vendors during the event.

The Charlotte-based Olde Mecklenburg Brewery will host a beer garden inside the venue, open to all attendees 21 years old and older with a valid ID. The World’s Greatest Funnel Cakes food truck also will be on site, selling sweet treats.

“We’re always trying to figure out what the citizens want and how to better meet their needs,” Dena Sabinske, park and recreation director for Stallings, said. “People have asked us about having a more adult oriented, (but also) family-friendly event, and this kind of meets that niche.”

Five judges will select the Stallings BBQ Champion and announce the winner at 4:30 p.m. Judges will include Stallings Mayor Wyatt Dunn, Stallings Councilman David Scholl, Stallings Chief of Police Minor Plyler, Stallings Elementary School Principal Laura Gaddy and Bob Prophit, of Kings Greenhouse.

The event also will feature live entertainment throughout. Quail Hollow Bluegrass Band will kick off the event at 3 p.m., followed by Southern rock group The Carmen Sturgill Band at 4:30 p.m. Event headliner Bakkwoodz will perform a set of country music from 7 to 9 p.m.

“We’re very excited to have all three bands – bluegrass, Southern rock and country – so, it’s going to be a good night,” Sabinske said. “Everybody loves some barbecue and some good music.”

The park will offer seating areas for people to eat, and the event is free to attend. People should bring money for food and drinks, as well as lawn chairs to listen to the live music. Outside coolers are not permitted.

Week nine football game previews Sun Valley at Marvin Ridge Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Cuthbertson at Weddington Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cavaliers need a win in the worst way. It’s gotten to the point where Cuthbertson’s postseason chances are reaching the bubbling point, and might burst if they don’t get things turned around soon.

Cavs quarterback Austin Kendall is talented, but needs help. Weddington’s defense won’t make it easy for Cuthbertson’s spread attack. Joey Hobbs, the Moore twins and company are coming.

This might be one of the highest scoring affairs Union County has seen in some time, and both teams are capable of lighting up the scoreboard. Quarterbacks Sam Howell (Sun Valley) and Austin Colonna (Marvin Ridge) are the two best passers in the county, and will be ready to throw it around some more.

The difference maker lies in Marvin Ridge’s backfield with running back Caleb Deveaux, who wears down defenses, and is getting better every week. Deveaux is a game changer, who can gash a defense at any moment.

Parkwood at Forest Hills Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Both teams need this game if they hope to battle Monroe for the Rocky River Conference crown. Parkwood’s in crisis mode at quarterback after struggling to find a guy to orchestrate its offense, while dual-threat quarterback Zaccheus Rorie might give Forest Hills an edge.

Defensively, Tyrese Marsh (Forest Hills) and Tanner Tyson (Parkwood) have shown they have a nose for the football, and are key to leading the defenses of their respective teams. Marsh and the Yellow Jackets better keep tabs on the Rebels Tre Butler, who is a homerun hitter.

Marvin Ridge turns the tide, Cuthbertson unravels

Let me begin by saying I’m sorry, Marvin Ridge. I was wrong. You’re much better than I thought you’d be.

The Mavs (4-3, 1-0) took down last year’s Southern Carolinas conference champion and one of our preseason favorites to be one of the top two teams in Union County, Cuthbertson (3-4, 0-1), beating the Cavaliers, 24-18, on Oct. 9 after starting the season 0-3 and going a combined 12-23 the past three seasons.

“It’s been rewarding to see the kids progress and improve,” Marvin Ridge coach Aubrey Carter said. “As a coach it’s been very rewarding just to see the kids buying into what you’re trying to sell them.”

Carter knew the success his team is having was possible when he researched the job before accepting it. The Mavericks still have a

long way to go, but Carter said the win over the Cavs is a momentum builder.

“Cuthbertson had some success last year and as far as they got in the playoffs, it’s definitely encouraging to beat a team of that quality,” Carter said.

Offensively, Marvin Ridge has become increasingly more potent over the course of the season. Quarterback Austin Colonna has a bevy of targets at receiver in Emeka Emezie, Devin Adkins and Alex Leshock, while running back Caleb Deveaux is evolving into bruising force with speed to burn.

Defensively, the Mavericks have made significant strides since its 56-14 loss to Ardrey Kell on Sept. 4, yielding only 19.5 points per game. Safety Ben Cook (59 tackles and three interceptions) and linebacker Chandler Castleberry (46 tackles, a sack and an interception) have been key to the Mavs success in slowing opposing offenses down.

Cuthbertson can easily reverse its mis-

fortune into something positive with a win over rival Weddington (6-1, 1-0); however, that won’t be easy. It’s difficult to imagine Tim Carson’s bunch having another hiccup before the postseason.

The Warriors are solid in all three phases of the game, while the Cavaliers haven’t put a complete game together in more than a month.

Defense is lacking at Sun Valley (4-3, 1-0), but sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Freshman quarterback Sam Howell is setting Union County and the surrounding area ablaze. The young gunslinger completed 20-32 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns to one interception in the Spartans 48-42 win over Piedmont (5-2, 0-1) Friday, Oct. 9. He only needs to throw for 37 yards to break the 2,000-yard barrier.

Sun Valley is a wildcard, because it’s hard to know which team will show up, but the potency of the Spartans high-scoring offense

makes them dangerous.

The machine known as Monroe (7-0, 1-0 Rocky River) continues to roll through competition like a tank on a battlefield, exposing CATA (4-2, 0-1) for what I thought it was – fools gold – when it beat the Cougars 44-0 Friday, Oct. 9.

CATA jumped out to a 4-0 start, which proved to be guise revealed by two consecutive blowout losses.

Parkwood (4-3, 1-0) is scrappy, but Forest Hills (5-2, 1-0) appears to be the only contender that can compete with Monroe for the league crown and that even seems to be a long shot.

Johnny Sowell and his staff don’t want the Redhawks to put the dial on cruise control, but they shouldn’t be challenged again till at least the third round of the playoffs. And Monroe is way better than a third round.

I’m thinking this team might still be alive the second week of December.
