Waxhaw residents rip gas station

WAXHAW – Cureton residents are still fuming over a 16-pump gas station proposed near their neighborhood, despite developers offering many concessions.

Micheaux Resource Management is seeking rezoning to build a convenience store with car wash, retail building and a restaurant on five acres just north of N.C. 16 and Kensington Road.

Developers brought a similar request a few months ago, but replaced an automotive repair shop with a sit-down restaurant after residents complained about the project during a July public hearing.

John Ross, president of Eagle Engineering, said developers made several changes based on feedback from the community, including adopting architectural themes consistent with Cureton and reflective of the town’s heritage. Sam Mart won’t include its traditional colors of red, purple and yellow, but will blend in with Cureton. The project also calls for a courtyard with fountain.

But these changes weren’t enough for neighbors.

“The plan they submitted was certainly a much nicer change than what we saw before but I still feel the community wasn’t given a chance to discuss the issues with the developer,” Aleta Galusha said during the Oct. 13 public hearing.

The town council directed developers over the summer to meet with Cureton residents and arrive at a compromise. But developers submitted revised plans to the town before meeting with Cureton resi-

dents on Oct. 19. The council had wanted to vote on the measure by Oct. 27 – before new leaders are elected Nov. 3.

Doug Emerson, manager at Summerfield Auto Repair in Waxhaw, doesn’t know why the town is getting more gas stations when fuel may become “old technology” in another 10 years.

Ross points to an analysis prepared by Esri that indicates $27 million is lost annually within a three-mile radius of the site due to the lack of a gas station.

Robert Dussinger would hate for Waxhaw residents to drive to the shopping center, get gas, wash their cars, grab coffee and drive over to Ballantyne or Wesley Chapel to shop.

His wife, Pat Dussinger, said Waxhaw is in greater need of stores.

“The only place to buy our underwear here is the dollar store,” she said, noting residents have to drive 10 to 15 miles to buy clothing.

Jerry Davis, whose family has owned the property for more than 100 years, doesn’t have a problem with his neighbors or their concerns, but he doesn’t understand why it’s so important for people to have a say in how the property is used. He’s been trying to sell the land since 2007.

The town council will consider the project Oct. 27, but uncertainty of how it would affect traffic congestion along Kensington Road, a local road, may delay the vote until after the election.

Commissioner Steve Maher directed staff to check with Kimley-Horn, a real estate advisory firm studying several local roads, to get an idea about how much more traffic the intersection may experience.

Weddington resident expands cake business

WEDDINGTON – Gabrielle Starr needed a career change.

The Weddington resident was an education professional and worked as a guidance counselor in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Union County Public Schools before her children, now 3 and 6 years old, were born.

“I decided I’d like to do something besides be a stay-at-home mom, but not more than part time,” Starr said.

Starr had a knack for baking, along with a handful of cake recipes. The cakes she baked had received accolades from family and friends, which led Starr to consider making cakes her livelihood.

“Back in February of this year, I jumped in with two feet and gradually started doing it,” Starr said of starting her cake business, Gabs’ Goodies.

She jumpstarted her small business by baking out of her own kitchen for businesses, churches and people in the community. Starr also worked with her daughter’s school, Charlotte Jewish Day School, baking a kosher birthday cake to share with students at the school.

Starr encountered various businesses that wanted to sell her cakes, such as The Butchers Market at 8410 Rea Road in south Charlotte. But there

was a catch with some businesses, including The Butchers Market – the cakes had to be baked in a stateapproved Gabrielle Starr kitchen that undergoes regular, official health inspections. Various charity auctions Starr wanted to donate to also required an approved kitchen.

Rather than work to have her home kitchen state approved, Starr sought an alternative: cook elsewhere. As of Thursday, Oct. 22, Starr will expand her business by renting kitchen space at Switchin’ Kitchens in south Charlotte. This will allow her to bake items to be sold at The Butchers Market and Wesley Chapel’s upcoming Halloween festival in Dogwood Park, on Oct. 31 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Starr is in talks to sell her cakes at other retail stores in south Charlotte and western Union County.

Gabs’ Goodies also takes orders online, offering coffee cakes and chocolate-chocolate chip, cinnamon streusel, pistachio, lemon pound, apple and pumpkin bundt cakes.

MARA inagural softball tournament raises $3Kfor Ellie’s Hats The Matthews Athletic & Recreation Association (MARA) recently hosted the inaugural Ellie’s Hats Charitable Softball Tournament to raise funds for Ellie’s Hats, a nonprofit that collects hats of all sizes, shapes, colors and designs for children fighting cancer.

Waxhaw Resident Robin Viar organized the tournament. Viar is a stage 4 colon cancer survivor who worked with her two teenage children, Katy and Reid, to host a hat drive last year in honor of Ellie’s Hats.

Six traveling softball teams participated in six softball games, held throughout the afternoon. Players also participated in a Home Run Derby, in which they tried to hit as many

County residents to vote on sale of alcohol March 15 MONROE – The Union County Board of Commissioners passed a revised resolution on Oct. 19, requesting the Board of Elections hold a vote regarding the countywide “on premises” and “off premises” sale of unfortified wine and malt beverages. The vote will be held on March 15, 2016, reaffirming the board’s decision on April 20.

The original April 20 resolution requested the vote take place at the time of the state’s 2016 primary; since, both presidential and general primaries have been set for March 16, 2015. The revised resolution accounts for the official date of the state primaries.

Mecklenburg to become 51st state

Mecklenburg County should consider building a wall. Kind of like the fancy one Donald Trump is talking about along the Mexico border, only ours will be designed to keep state legislators out of our lives.

Scratch that. Let’s pound on the proverbial nuke button as if it were a snooze bar. It’s time for Mecklenburg County to wake up and secede from North Carolina. We, the people of Mecklenburg, should become the 51st state of the Union – the first state born of the 21st century – the state of the future.

North Carolina seceded from the United States 154 Justin Vick years ago in a sequence of events that led to the Civil War. And the people of Ballantyne love flirting with the idea of separating from Charlotte.

But Mecklenburg County doesn’t have time for flirting. We must thrust ourselves toward secession now before we see detrimental damage from the growing rift between North Carolina’s urban and rural counties.

Legislators recently inserted language that would limit the amount of state funding going to light rail projects – an obvious slap in the face to progressive cities like Charlotte and Raleigh.

For years, the North Carolina General Assembly allowed politics to interfere with state transporta-

tion funding. The Charlotte region has long had some of the most congested roads, and the only way we could get improvements to them was to reluctantly add toll lanes. By the way, if you hate the idea of toll lanes, I’m sure Mecklenburg seceding from North Carolina would null and void the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s $500 million public-private partnership with Spanish company Cintra to build toll lanes from Charlotte to Mooresville along Interstate 77.

Forget toll lanes for our new state. Let’s just put a turnpike at our border, requiring visitors from North Carolina to pay us a small fee. Anyone with a government license plate would have to pay triple.

Then you have socialists masquerading as Republicans in the N.C. General Assembly. They want to redistribute our hard-earned sales taxes dollars to counties that aren’t making any effort to increase visitor spending.

Think about all of the economic development opportunities that required a significant amount of investment to infrastructure – Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets and NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Shouldn’t we be entitled to most of the sales tax generated from these attractions?

Becoming the 51st state would give us an opportunity to create an efficient state government from scratch. Naturally, Pat McCrory should get the nod to serve as our first governor until we have formal elections.

In his first act as governor, McCrory should dump his North Carolina pin in the trash and burn it as Charlotte native and 16-time world wrestling

champion Ric “Nature Boy” Flair applies the official Mecklenburg pin to his lapel. Coincidently, our state motto will be “Woooooooo!”

Life will change in other ways.

No more Common Core educational curriculum. School lunch rooms will serve pork chops in the shape of Mecklenburg County. Our state flag will be checkered – because we’re winners.

Mecklenburg should recruit adjacent counties to help expand our borders. Securing Union, Cabarrus and Iredell counties are especially vital to our state economy.

We need the Cabarrus County resources of Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord Mills, the North Carolina Research Campus and the Dale Earnhardt statute in Kannapolis.

Iredell County would allow us to consolidate the east side of Lake Norman and claim Mooresville’s NASCAR teams.

Union County makes sense because there are so many people commuting to Charlotte for jobs… and Union’s aerodynamics industry would add diversity to Mecklenburg’s economy.

New towns are sure to emerge from neighborhoods (Ballantyne, SouthPark and University City), and some of the region’s most popular local leaders could very well become state and national leaders.

Despite being the architect of this new government, I prefer no recognition. But if the citizens must create a statute in my likeness, I hope the sculptor corrects my terrible posture and trims about 40 pounds.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Residents should have voted before the Indian Trail Town Council approved building a town hall.

I thank David Cohn for his stance in favor of the people’s voice and for voting against building a town hall without a vote from the citizens of Indian Trail. David did not vote against the town hall; he voted against building it without the input of the people of Indian Trail.

One councilmember says the people had an opportunity to voice their opinions during the public comments portion of the council meetings. People speaking during the public comment portion of the council meeting are making presentations to a council that is in a hurry to get on with the published agenda; they are not listening with undivided attention to the comments. If the council truly desired input from Indian Trail citizens, they would have arranged for a few sessions dedicated to accepting input specifically about building a town hall.

If a referendum for building the Indian Trail town hall had been placed on the November ballot, a more thorough and understandable presentation as to how to fund the project and how the facility would be used would have been available to the public. As it stands now, the existing town council members and town manager, except for David Cohn, are saying, “Trust us, we know best.”

I would rather trust the people’s voice.

How many other issues are out there that require the citizens to “trust them?”

Thank you David Cohn for representing the voice of the people.

Tolly Pruitt Indian Trail Dear Editor, Does Indian Trail need a new town hall?

Probably. Does it need an $8.5 million Taj Mahal? Probably not, but that is not the issue.

As a taxpaying voter, I believe I should have input into that decision and that voter opinion should be considered in all huge expenditures of our money. It is our money after all. I realize that is not an opinion shared by the status quo cartel that has been running things in this town for far too long.

It is not the opinion of the council members who are puppets of the developers who pay their campaign expenses. It is not the opinion of the egotists who say they are not going to ask voters for permission to change every light bulb, and it is not the opinion of town employees and elected officials who put their personal and political aspirations ahead of the best interests of their constituents and the fiscal stability of this town.

But it is my opinion, and it is an opinion shared by candidates Cohn, Stanton, and Wireman. You can vote for them or you can vote for the status quo.

being thrust upon the citizens of Indian Trail to construct a new town hall without our input.

Seeing as I have only had one occasion to step foot in the Indian Trail town hall since moving to Indian Trail in 1997, this proposed new town hall holds no appeal to me as a resident and I'd like my voice to be heard on this matter.

To the Indian Trail Town council members: please help me understand why I had the opportunity to vote on the parks referendum yet I am getting no say in the construction of a new town hall.

Allow me the right to have my voice heard and vote counted.

Frank Stepnick Indian Trail Dear Editor Recently the Indian Trail town council voted to build an $8.5-million town hall and refused to allow a peoples vote on it because they feared that we would vote it down –something is wrong with that thinking. Many of us feel this is misusing authority and needs to be exposed. The council needs to keep their hands in their pockets and out of ours.

I've been a resident of Indian Trail for four years, and I've not been any more furious about anything here as I have been about the town hall being shoved down our throats. I don't think such an expensive option was needed, and I'm most incensed by the complete disregard our current town council had for the residents of Indian Trail by not bringing this before the people on the ballot.

The town council members, with one exception, feel like this isn't something that needed to be brought before the voters, and some have tried the argument that it would be illegal for them to bring it to us in this manner. What should be illegal is a town council that feels they are accountable to no one and in their own arrogance ignores the very people who they should be representing.

All you need is education Cuthbertson rocks out with John Lennon nonprofit

Eight Cuthbertson High School students got a little help from their friends and came together to write and produce an original song and video to earn a stop from the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus (JLETB).

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) selected six schools nationwide, including Cuthbertson, in the second annual “What Makes Music Education Great in My School,” in which students recorded a video explaining why music education is important.

“The video detailed why music was so important at our school and why it’s such an important part of our daily life,” junior Bradley Evans said. “Music has always been a pretty important part of my life. I’ve always had an interest in it and it’s definitely something I want to do in the future.”

Senior Chad Morris, who orchestrated the video, said the team worked together for about a week on their original song and decided to have fun with the video, using wigs and other props.

The school’s rock band, which produced the song and video, earned a visit from the JLETB and an opportunity to write, record

and produce an original song and video.

The bus consisted of a mobile recording studio with high definition video and audio provided by sponsors.

“We use the equipment with all the kids we come in contact with all over the country to give them the hands-on opportunity to see what it takes and the experience of working and being inside of a recording studio that they otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity,” said Peter Novoa, a producer and engineer on the bus. “The whole point is to create. We want to live out John Lennon’s legacy, which is creating peace through art. As we know, he was a musician, artist and humanitarian and we try to expose the kids to that – how powerful art can be.”

The JLETB visited Cuthbertson on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19 and 20, and the NAMM Foundation hosted a SupportMusic Community Forum to feature performances of Cuthbertson high school musical ensembles and the premier of the rock band composition.

The eight rock band students wrote, recorded and produced their song, “Tangible Things,” throughout Monday.

The group began working on the song before recording on the bus since the beginning of the school year, said junior Brenden Grove.

“(We want the kids to learn) the fundamentals of creating. We want them to go home with as little or as much as they have – whether it’s just a pencil and paper or nothing in their hands, they can still create something out of it,” Novoa said. “The point is students can see what their potential is and whether they want to take off with it in their future to become audio engineers or producers or cameramen or just being able to take a picture on their phone or a family portrait and be proud of themselves.”

Stallings woman crowned Miss NC USA

STALLINGS – Allie Dunn didn’t start her pageant career with it all figured out.

In fact, she wasn’t sure how to walk in heels or apply makeup when she started, but she loved people and felt her personality could work in the pageant world.

Allie Dunn Her practice and vivacious, but humble personality earned her the Miss Stallings USA title and ultimately the Miss North Carolina USA 2016 title on Oct. 10.

Dunn, the daughter of Stallings Mayor Wyatt Dunn, told her mother, Terri, she wanted to compete in pageants when she was 15 years old, but wasn’t sure how to be on stage.

She practiced for two years and was able to compete in the Miss NC Teen USA pageant and then the Miss NC USA pageant.

“It’s all about practicing. I was so awkward in heels. I wish I could show people a video. I looked like a baby deer,” Dunn said. “This was not something I born ready to do. It took practice.”

In the Miss NC USA pageant, women apply to be contestants and go through an interview process. She applied for the Miss Stallings USA and was started training for this year’s pageant.

Dunn worked with a trainer, selected a wardrobe,

practiced walking in heels and on stage, kept up with current trends and political events and worked to stay “disciplined” with her lifestyle choices.

Pageant contestants are judged in three categories – interview, swimsuit and evening gown.

Dunn said the one-on-one interview with the judges is her favorite part because she feels she can show off her personality.

When judges announced her as the pageant’s winner, Dunn described her experience as “outof-body,” as she went into a state of shock and overwhelming emotion.

However, earning the crown is just the beginning of Dunn’s journey as Miss NC USA. She’s already booked appearances, events and parades.

She’s looking forward to continuing her work with the USO and its Operation That’s My Dress events, as they hold a special place in her heart as the sister of a Navy lieutenant Dunn also will work with Operation North State, attend activities for Operation Christmas Child and will volunteer with the Miss USA pageant to help support breast and ovarian cancer research.

She encourages young girls who want to be in pageants to “go in there and be themselves,” which she said she attributes to her success.

“It didn’t work for me twice, but that’s OK because it’s so important to know your worth.

(Young girls) shouldn’t have to change anything about themselves for anyone,” she said. “It’s OK to be a little awkward at 13. No one has it all figured out in high school … I would just encourage them to stay true to yourself and be your best self. I think that’s what I learned from pageant, how to present my best self.”

Monroe Boy Scout creates outdoor space

MONROE – Eighteen-year-old Anthony Dow, of Monroe, created an outdoor amphitheater at West Monroe Baptist Church to earn his Eagle Scout rank.

Troop 171, sponsored by Yadkin Bank, awarded Dow the honor on Oct. 12 in a special ceremony, as the first Eagle Scout in the troop.

To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest advancement rank in Scouting, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in leadership, service and outdoor skills, according to the Boy Scouts of America website.

There are many avenues to carry out the project, but a Boy Scout must pass specific tests organized by requirements and merit badges to achieve the rank.

The troop was started six years ago by Gordon Gallagher and Douglas Lathan with the mission to reach out to economically disadvantaged youth.

Dow, a Sun Valley High School student, joined the troop when he was 13 years old and has continued with the troop, despite a two-year interruption when he lived in Florida.

He completed the construction of the outdoor amphitheater with the help of Lathan, his project coach, the troop and sponsorship from the Monroe community, in June and accomplished the re-

mainder of his Eagle Scout requirements in July.

“The esthetically designed and expertly constructed amphitheater is exceptional for an Eagle Scout project and will be entered in a statewide best-project-of-theyear competition,” Jack Nelson, scoutmaster, wrote in an email.

Dow has played football, was on Sun Valley’s wrestling team and is slated to graduate next June.

He credits Scouting for giving him a sense of direction and increasing his life skills and self-confidence.

“Learning to use a compass was symbolic for me,” he said.

He also recognizes his aunt Barbara Johnston, who he considers a motherly figure, and his chief mentor, Lathan, for helping him become an Eagle Scout.

UCPS launches new website, app Union County Public Schools launched its newly redesigned website last week, developed with parents, staff, students and community members in mind.

The district and all school websites have been updated with a modern design and technology to improve communication, according to a news release. The design is said to be more user friendly, easier to navigate and places feature stories, upcoming events and announcements in prominent areas.

The website also has a “responsive” design, so it will adjust to the browser and mobile device the reader is using.

UCPS also is offering a mobile app for the community to access feature stories, calendars and other information through a smartphone or mobile device. Each school will now have its own mobile app. The UCPS app is free and will be available through iTunes and Google play stores in mid-October.

Union County graduate receives English Education scholarship WAXHAW – East Carolina student Chandria Sharpe, of Waxhaw, is among 78 students at the school to receive a scholarship from the College of Education.

Sharpe received the Tom and Karen Bartik Scholarship in English Education, valued at $750.

TV anchor visits Sardis Elementary MONROE – Sardis Elementary School’s after school program welcomed WBTV anchor John Carter on Oct. 12 to share his thoughts on reading and celebrate the students’ favorite books.

Students dressed as book characters and met with Carter. Many recognized him from the morning news that he hosts with Christine Sperow. He shared stories and a little magic with the students.

Tanya Harris, after school director, encouraged Carter to visit the students for a second time.

Harris has been working at Sardis for four years and seeks to bring an “enriching” after school experience, according to the school’s website.

The T-shirt said, ‘Mom Likes Me Best,’ and I owned it

I don’t know where it came from, but somehow I came into possession of a Tshirt that had emblazoned on the front of it, “Mom Likes Me Best.”

It was royal blue with white letters that had red trim. Rev. Tony Marciano The letters themselves had to be at least three inches tall.

You could see it a mile away.

I never wore the shirt but didn’t want to give it away. After all, one day, (not sure when that day would come), I would actually wear it. The truth is, I never wore it. It was just great to own it. When going through my closet, I would see it and smile.

There is still sibling rivalry in my family. With an aging mother who lives with me, I’ve learned that as the children take care of their mother (mine has dementia and thinks I am her nephew) all the unresolved childhood issues begin to surface. It’s been amazing how well we have

worked together (or not worked together) to schedule what we call “Nana care.” It reminds me of the days where chores had to be done and who was able to get out of the work and who got “stuck” doing them.

Today, I have the role I played at 10 years old of being the referee between the three of us. So when I asked my mother the question “Who do you love the best?” the real reason for asking the question is that maybe we are still jockeying for the position we wanted when we were in grammar school. We wanted to hear, “Mom likes me best,” but mother was always on to us. She always replied, “I love you all the same.” Then she smiled.

After she said that, I always turned to my mother and said, “Remember mom, who takes care of your finances?” She’d smile, look at the three of us and say, “I still love you all the same.”

Recently, I read the book, “The Happiness Project.” The author challenged the reader to “clean out your closet.” I did that and felt so much better. I donated the shirt to the Charlotte Rescue Mission.

A few days later I saw “my shirt” being worn by one of the residents of the Rebound men’s program. I smiled each time I saw him wearing it. I learned he was really proud of it. When I saw him wearing

it, it reminded me of the message every one of us longs to hear, “We are loved.”

Author Sally Lloyd-Jones in writing “The Jesus Storybook Bible – a Children’s Bible” says this about what happened in the Garden of Eden: “Eve picked the fruit and ate some. Adam ate some too and a terrible lie came into the world.

It would never leave. It would live on in every human heart, whispering to every one of God’s children, ‘God doesn’t love me.’”

If we believe the lie, we fill the void in so many different ways. Prior to coming to the Rescue Mission, our residents filled it with drugs and alcohol. Other ways we fill that void is with food, work, sex, gambling, power, rage and religion (which is not a relationship to God). We fill the void with a “temporary fix” and feel-good about ourselves. But, those “feel good feelings” only last a few moments then we have to repeat it over and over to get that feeling back.

The shirt almost said it right. Instead of reading “Mom Likes Me Best,” I wish it read, “God Loves Me Best.”

And can I add, “He loves you and me unconditionally.”

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Metrolina Christian cross-country wins MAC

Winning isn’t everything to coach Brett Honeycutt and his Metrolina Christian cross-country program, but he won’t hesitate to say it’s not couch to 5K either.

Honeycutt has been building the Warriors into a perennial power in boys’ crosscountry for years, and he now has the girls’ team competing at a championship level after both teams won the Metrolina Athletic Conference (MAC) Championship Meet at McAlpine Park in Charlotte on Oct. 15.

Junior Rebekah Jenkins won the girls’ meet, finishing it in 20 minutes and 30 seconds to lead her team to a one point win over Hickory Grove. Freshman Tate Johnson won the boys’ meet, running it in 17:22.70 to propel his team to a dominating 36-point win over Gaston Christian.

This is Metrolina Christian’s boys second MAC championship in a row and fourth in five years, and it’s the girls first ever after finishing runner up last season.

“It was nice,” Honeycutt said. “I really wanted the girls so bad to win that.”

Jenkins said it’s neat to be a part of the first team to win in school history, especially because she didn’t think they were going to win.

“Last year when we came in second, it was really neat to have that happen going from being in fifth the year before to coming in

second, and this year when we won by one point. It was really exciting,” Jenkins said.

She added last season’s second place finish in the MAC Championship meet acted as a springboard, giving her and her teammates momentum for this season. But Jenkins had much to overcome after battling through the pain of shin splints that sidelined her as a freshman. She still endures through the pain from those, but through hard work and preparation, she’s able to persevere and even thrive – she’s trimmed nearly three minutes off her time from a year ago.

“For Rebekah when people see that she put in the work, you’ll probably see a difference in next year’s team, because they’ll realize you have to put in the work,” Honeycutt said.

“Not everybody’s going to cut off three minutes, but if you put the work in you’re going to cut some time off. You can’t just tell me, ‘Yeah Coach, I ran,’ because I tell the kids the stopwatch never lies.”

Part of Jenkins strength lies in her ability to finish races.

“Even if she goes out fast she’s always going to finish strong,” Honeycutt said. “You can see it when other people are dying that she’s either closing on them or getting them.

It doesn’t mean that somebody’s not going to get her, but she does really well at the end of races.”

This should be a high-scoring affair, but Weddington’s stingy defense and solid running game might be what separates the Warriors from the Spartans. Sun Valley can score on any team, especially when quarterback Sam Howell is on his game, but this will be his greatest challenge since facing Monroe in week one.

The Warriors don’t make many mistakes, so Sun Valley can’t afford to cough the ball up or make foolish penalties. A win over the Spartans would move Weddington a step closer to a Southern Carolinas championship and a top four seed in the state playoffs.

Marvin Ridge at Piedmont Friday at 7:30 p.m.

This game pits two of the most dynamic running backs against one another – Piedmont’s Khris Missick and Marvin Ridge’s Caleb Deveaux.

Both have cleared the 1,000-yard rushing barrier. However, Marvin Ridge appears to have remedied its early season struggles, and is functioning as a well-oiled machine on both sides of the ball.

Ball control and time of possession might be significant factors, and the Panthers can certainly eat up clock and keep the Mavericks off the field with its double wing attack.

However, Marvin Ridge’s potent offense might need much time if quarterback Austin Colonna gets in a rhythm with his dangerously talented bevy of receivers.

Monroe at Parkwood Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Redhawks soaring at a championship level, and are looking to swoop down on the Rebels. Parkwood has athletes, especially a game breaker in running back Tre Butler, but he might have met his match in Monroe’s attacking and opportunistic defense.

Miquille Bryant, Dontaviaus Covington and Trayquan Price lead Monroe’s unit of junkyard dog defense that has put opponents on lockdown all season, and should render the Rebels Wing-T offense ineffective. The Redhawks dual-threat quarterback Zephaniah Wall is getting better every week, and can burn Parkwood’s defense via air or ground if it doesn’t get to him early and often.

“The practices aren’t a lot of fun, but when you see the success in the races and competitiveness of it it’s definitely a lot of fun,” Johnson said. “You can actually see your hard work paying off. It makes you want to work harder.”

Honeycutt said Johnson gives the other runners on the team someone to chase.

“If they’re older then that makes an impact,” Honeycutt said. “A younger guy’s beating me, so it makes them work a little bit harder. His performance encourages other guys to work a little bit harder.”

Honeycutt believes success builds on success, and he’s going to keep pushing the Warriors to get better.

“I want them to do well, and I want them to win,” Honeycutt said. “I tell the parents, ‘I don’t want to give you a false sense of reality, so I’m not just going to put you out there and let you go against teams you can beat. I want you to be against teams that are going to push you and beat you and then you see what’s better out there.’”

He’s found a winning formula for crosscountry at Metrolina Christian, and he has the runners in Jenkins and Johnson to lead the charge.

They’ll continue their dream season at the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship meet when they return to McAlpine Park on Friday, Oct. 30.
